An Iraqi city council member opened fire on U.S. forces outside Baghdad on Monday, killing two soldiers and wounding three others. “The U.S. forces returned fire, killing the city council member, according to two Interior Ministry officials.”
Several measures the Bush administration uses to demonstrate progress in Iraq “are either incorrect or far more mixed than the administration has acknowledged,” according to a new GAO report. Though data on the declines in overall violence is generally accurate, administration figures “broadly overstate gains” in other categories like the readiness of the Iraqi Army and electricity production, the report finds.
According to a new Department of Justice (DOJ) Inspector’s General report to be released today, high-ranking political appointees, beginning under former attorney general John Ashcroft, moved to “exert more control” more over the DOJ’s prestigious hiring program. They reportedly tried to stock it with “young conservatives in a five-year-long attempt to reshape the department’s ranks.”
After voting against the Webb GI Bill, Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) now “has the gall to try and take credit for its passage.” Brandon Friedman writes, “It is an admirable attempt at spin, however. Either way, the troops know Cornyn is a flip-flopper who supports them when it’s politically expedient.”
On the trail today: Today, Barack Obama (D-IL) will travel to Las Vegas for a “Change that Works for You” discussion on energy and green jobs. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) will speak alongside California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Santa Barbara.
A military attaché has told investigators that that the United States ambassador to Albania “helped cover up the illegal Chinese origins of ammunition that a Pentagon contractor bought to supply Afghan security forces.” The ambassador endorsed a plan to repackage the ammunition “to disguise its origins” and then ship it from Albania to Afghanistan for a Miami Beach arms-dealing company.
“For almost two years former Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge failed to register a nearly half-million-dollar lobbying contract that he had with the government of Albania.” Ridge, who just registered earlier this month, said he “didn’t think it was [necessary] to register,” even though federal law requires “agents to register with the DOJ within 10 days of signing a contract with a foreign government.”
The flights of nearly 40,000 travelers were canceled or delayed at Heathrow Airport to accommodate President Bush during his stopover in London on June 15 and 16. British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh criticized the disruption, stating, “The decision to allow President Bush and his fleet of aircraft to fly into Heathrow rather than a military base was one all of Heathrow’s users could have done without.”
During his congressional testimony yesterday, NASA climatologist Dr. James Hansen urged the U.S. to phase out coal plants. Warning that “we’ve passed the tipping point” regarding global warming, Hansen advised, “I think the most important near-term thing is to say let’s have a moratorium on coal.”
In an effort to “communicate directly with students, dissidents and others without endorsing the government,” the Bush administration “is considering setting up a diplomatic outpost in Iran in what would mark a dramatic official U.S. return to the country nearly 30 years after the American embassy was overrun and the two nations severed relations.”
And finally: Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder was in DC yesterday for a concert, during which he “went on a tear” about, among other topics, conservatives’ “proposed plan to lift the ban on offshore drilling” and “the ‘corporate’ mentality of the Bush administration.” There was reportedly “some muffled booing,” including from attendee House Minority Leader John Boehner’s (R-OH) spokesman Brian Kennedy, who nevertheless said it was a “great show.”
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
A human-animal hybrid nonproliferation treaty?
So many congressional hearings lately have focused on the housing crisis, credit crunch or energy prices that one tends to forget that there are other pressing matters to attend to. Like, how to stop an international arms race in biotechnological engineering, in which humans are redesigned with superior intelligence, human-animal hybrids start popping out of laboratories all over the planet, and direct brain-machine interaction becomes the stuff of daily life.
But the hearing of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade held last Thursday was all too real, even though my eyes did start to roll when the prospects of eternal life and an “end to scarcity” were raised.
The question at the heart of the hearing was fascinating: How do we come to an international biotechnological equivalent of the nuclear nonproliferation treaty, when there are widely varying views, globally speaking, on where to draw the line between what’s kosher and what isn’t when we start tinkering with how humans are put together at a fundamental genetic level? How do you balance, for example, maintaining a competitive position at the forefront of modern medical research with a particular set of values? From a globalization standpoint, the most interesting subplot of the hearing had to do with the impact that restrictive (or permissive) laws governing what kind of research is acceptable has on the flow of ideas and scientists across the planet.
Earlier this year, said Metzl, “Britain passed a new embryology law that allows for the use of chimeras, human-animal hybrid embryos, up to 14 days for research purposes.” And now U.S. politicians are discussing biotech research nonproliferation. Good luck. Once upon a time, the U.S. ruled the global science roost. But in today’s world, if the U.S. doesn’t build it, it will go elsewhere.

For the life of me I do not understand why this country allows religious zealots to dictate pure research. Why stem cells are the anti-christ, when in actuality they are the key to curing Parkinson’s Disease, spinal cord injuries, and so many other horrible diseases. The government has allowed religion to get in the way of making many significant breakthroughs. I have no issue with how anyone worships; but don’t force it on the rest of society. Religious beliefs in all of it’s manifestations has no place in science or any research project.
June 24th, 2008 at 9:01 amUS army to get its first female four-star general
A 33-year veteran of the US military, Lieutenant General Ann Dunwoody, on Monday became the first woman to be nominated to the highest rank in the US Army, four-star general. “This is an historic occasion for the Department of Defense and I am proud to nominate Lt Gen Ann Dunwoody for a fourth star,” Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a statement.
Dunwoody’s nomination has to be approved by the US Senate. She would take over as commander of Army Materiel Command, a branch of the army that provides logistics support to tens of thousands of US soldiers stationed around the world. Dunwoody was named deputy commanding general of Materiel Command only last week, following the retirement of Lieutenant General William Mortensen.

Wow, I’m impressed she even received a nomination. How progressive of the Army; it’s nice to see a woman may actually break another barrier in my lifetime. This will set a great precedence to any woman you wants to make a career in the military.
Don’t Let Bush Cut Funding for Public Broadcasting
The Bush administration has slashed the proposed public broadcasting budget by 56 percent – putting at risk vital news, educational and cultural programming that millions of Americans say they prefer to commercial media. By taking action, you can push Congress to pass legislation that not only restores but increases funding for diverse public media.
https://secure.freepress.net/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=271
If you go to this link you can; Sign the petition to your senators urging them to protect public broadcasting. Bush Administration hates diverse public media, it’s something that they have no control over unless they cut their budget. Rotten SOB’s.

Is this appeasement? NO! This is exactly what Bush should have been doing 6-7 years ago. Most of Iran’s youth is pro-Western. Iran just elected a new Speaker, who doesn’t agree with many of Iran’s current foreign policies.
I just hope this isn’t a sham to be used later as we begin bombing, saying, ‘well, we tried, but diplomacy just can’t work in Iran.

Whenever the POTUS travels anywhere, all traffic is disrupted, whether it’s Air Force One, the presidential motorcade, or any other mode of transportation. And I agree with the BA exec that it’s a pain in the butt for everyone else.
I know that whenever the president (or the vice president) travels anywhere near my town, traffic patterns are disrupted for the entire time he’s here. Therefore I greet the news of a presidential visit with dread.
And it’s not just the traffic tie-ups — imagine how much fuel is consumed by large planes and large motorcades (not to mention greenhouse gases churned out)!
I don’t blame Bush for this, though. This happens no matter who the president is, or how I feel about him politically. It’s the system that we have in place to keep our president safe.
I don’t support relaxing presidential security, but perhaps our president could return to the WWII mindset — “is this trip necessary?”
June 24th, 2008 at 9:09 amJudge: Why Litigate When You Can Arrest?
In a motion hearing in federal court today, U.S. District Judge John Bates questioned why Congress didn’t simply arrest former White House counsel Harriet Miers and Chief of Staff Josh Bolten after both refused to respond to subpoenas issued by the House Judiciary Committee:
Congress has the authority to hold someone in contempt, U.S. District Judge John Bates said. Did it really need to go to court? House counsel Irvin Nathan said it did. The hearing is the latest in an ongoing battle between Congress and the White House, to have senior aides testify about the U.S. attorney firings. Bates also queried whether he should make a decision at all:
“Both sides have the same argument,” Bates said. “Whether I rule for the executive branch or I rule for the legislative branch, I’m going to disrupt the balance.”
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/06/judge_why_litigate_when_you_can_arrest.php
The judge asks why Congress doesn’t just arrest these two. Great question judge, we have all been wondering the same thing. It’s a lack of accountability and an unwillingness to do their job. Many of them obviously should never be allowed on this Judiciary Committee again.

Solar panels are now down in cost to a one time investment of $1 per watt. Wind farms don’t pollute or explode. Geothermal is clean and produces no wastes. There are far better renewable, green, and safe alternatives than ethanol, coal or nuclear power. Let’s get real about alternative fuels.

If our oil companies were really serious about exploring and investing in the development of alternative energy sources (instead of pretending to as a condition for all the corporate welfare they receive), we would have made a great deal more progress toward using these sources as our norm.
I support technology that increases the efficiency and lowers the cost of photovoltaic panels. I support research into the harnessing of landfill gas. I support the use of biofuels (such as livestock waste) as an energy source instead of allowing it to be the environmental pollutant that it is (I live in NC, and there are a LOT of hog farms here). And I support more development of vehicles that use less (or no) fossil fuels BEFORE our planet runs out of oil. Why in the world would anyone be against these things — except perhaps energy companies who don’t want people to stray from the energy source that’s currently making obscene profits for the company?

The Global Warming Cult has a strong presence on this website.
About 2 months ago, Western Texas experienced a stage 2 power emergency. Businesses and other large users of electricity like Al Gore had do cut back on their usage.
Why did this happen? The wind stopped blowing and all the windmills ground to a halt producing NO electricity.
Unreliable energy…now that is a great regressive plan…just like in the old Soviet Union.
First, you need to state all of the facts>>>>>>
A drop in wind generation late on Tuesday, coupled with colder weather, triggered an electric emergency that caused the Texas grid operator to cut service to some large customers.
(Some Large Customers)
System operators curtailed power to interruptible customers to shave 1,100 megawatts of demand within 10 minutes, ERCOT said. Interruptible customers are generally large industrial customers who are paid to reduce power use when emergencies occur.
These customers are paid to reduce power use. You are going to have to do better than that. Or are you assuming I will not do the research?????

Is it asking too much that our trolls put forth as much effort into their posts as the rest of us do? All of the posts above pretty much follow the same troll pattern. Post a link to some news story, then copy and paste part of the content within the linked article. No comment, no original thought — just troll spam.
The trolls hurriedly scan through their lists of the latest RNC talking points for original thoughts to cut and paste.

June 24th, 2008 at 10:48 amGood morning, Freedom Rebel.
I’m pleasantly surprised that John Bates would point out Congress’ authority to arrest these two Bush cronies. What are the odds, however, of congress getting the message? Why does Pelosi insist on continuing to play nice?

June 24th, 2008 at 10:54 amRoger2,
Give us a good cut-and-paste Repug talking point to this:
Oh, wait, that is the SOP for the GOP; take credit for someone else’s work, but blast it before hand. Gotta love those Texas boyz, just like the Bugman DeLay and the Bush Crime Family., huh?
June 24th, 2008 at 10:54 amrogerse – why exactly are you here?
Haven’t you learned by now that we do research and don’t just accept the things you post, as you simpy accept the things you read on fake “news” websites?
June 24th, 2008 at 10:54 amEver feel like you’re being lied to? Want to do something about it? Let’s make this a ‘November to remember’. Vote all crooked pols out, be they Dem or Rep.
Therein lies the rub. If you are a Democrat and your congressperson is one of those who are crooked, are you supposed to vote for the Republican? The only time we have a real choice to get rid of the crooked members of our party is in the primaries.
June 24th, 2008 at 10:55 amso I will assume you have no opinion relative to this “news”. Is that correct rogerse?

Because Nancy was complicit in many of the crimes that the Bush Crime family has committed. She doesn’t want them blowing the whistle on her complicity so she is keeping her mouth shut. She will go down in history as the Worst Speaker of the House ever.

June 24th, 2008 at 11:00 amI think ‘The McChurian’ candidate’s logo is offensive. It, at first glance, appears to be one of our military ’star & wings’ logos.
This is a subliminal marketing message, equating McChurian with our military. Now, Gramps hasn’t been in the military for nearly 40 years, has he? WTF?
Full disclosure, I also didn’t like Obama’s logo.

June 24th, 2008 at 11:18 amSeveral measures the Bush administration uses to demonstrate progress in Iraq “are either incorrect or far more mixed than the administration has acknowledged,” according to a new GAO report. Though data on the declines in overall violence is generally accurate, administration figures “broadly overstate gains” in other categories like the readiness of the Iraqi Army and electricity production, the report finds.
So Bush was misrepresenting the truth about Iraq? That sounds familiar, where have I heard that before?

5 – They really just want to protect America
June 24th, 2008 at 11:25 am(willing to sacrifice liberty for security)
4 – Afraid of being painted weak
3 – Blackmail
2 – Want to cover own complicity in wiretapping crimes

1 – They want the power for themselves!

You do realize that you can have multiple storage systems – not just one big one, right?

Al Bore uses as much electricity in his Tennessee home as 500 of us common folks.
How many ways can you tell this lie? First of all, Al Gore does not live in Texas, so your claim that a power reduction in west Texas caused him to turn off his lights is absurd, and makes you look very stupid. Secondly, his house is equipped with solar panels, a rainwater collection system, and geothermal heating, so your claim that he uses 500 time as much electricity as “common folks” makes you look like a liar.
Do you enjoy looking like a stupid liar?

Good Morning McWars:) Sorry it took me so long to reply. I wash getting my hair cut, that is one of those things women never miss an appt. for.
O/T I would say Congress has not been getting point for a very long time. This Judiciary Committee is such a farce, they really are a disgrace. I think Bilbo said it yesterday, He wished all the bad democrats would disappear. I’m with him. I don’t think it so much Nancy playing nice as it is she has completely gone to the right and with the media. I’m beyond disappointed in her, I hope Cindy Sheehan makes a very good run against her in this next election and takes her seat.
These congressial members need to learn a very hard lesson that people are watching. If they don’t do their job, they don’t get re-elected for another term. This country has paid too high of a price for their lack of leadership and majority. Of course, in southern Ohio we need to replace a few representatives down there also. Betty Sutton is in my district and she is the new kid on the block and she has done well as far as her voting record. So we will keep sending her money and emails congratulating her every time she votes the right way.
Great to see you McWars. Have a good day ;)

June 24th, 2008 at 12:28 pmDamn! Only a pussy would stand quietly by while others imply they might be a pussy. Can we get an answer here The Right or not? I don’t want you to look bad but I did not create this situation. I just gave you the chance to explain why you seem to think the US military is part of some sort of misguided cult.
June 24th, 2008 at 12:51 pmThe Right,
June 24th, 2008 at 12:55 pmThank you for your honest response. I retrack any suggestion that you might not be up to the challenge. Now whereas you are on record suggesting that global climate may not be a serious matter, might you wish to expound upon the basis of your opinion? Is it that you just dislike Al Gore and wish to tie this much larger issue to this one individual?

June 24th, 2008 at 1:26 pmLet’s give The Right a chance to answer for themself. It takes a pretty big person to tangentially ackowledge mistakes/weaknesses. The Right is not a pussy. I am with you though. For now it seems mostly a strong distaste for Mr Gore. Earlier The Right stated that Mr. Gore was the founder of the cult. I found that sort of odd as it seems to give Mr. Gore almost a messianic status. Please clarify, TheRight.
Ok, Rightie, were you telling stupid lies about Al Gore because of a personal dislike for him? And, now that you have had time to google the US military’s position on global climate disruption, do you consider the US military to be part of Gore’s “cult”?
The stage is your’s.
