The holdover from an earlier period refers to the period when McCain was running hard for the Republican nomination. Now that he has the nomination secured it is a new period. McCain has had a lot of that double-speak since securing the nomination. He has also had a lot of the mis-speak since securing the nomination. It is hard to know which is which. I think I get it.
