Blackwater affiliate company urges use of Sharia law in American court.
“To defend itself against a lawsuit by the widows of three American soldiers who died on one of its planes in Afghanistan,” a sister company of Blackwater is asking an American federal court to apply Islamic law, known as Sharia. The lawsuit “is governed by the law of Afghanistan,” Presidential Airways argued in a Florida federal court. “Afghan law is largely religion-based and evidences a strong concern for ensuring moral responsibility, and deterring violations of obligations within its borders.” But when it comes to Iraq, Blackwater has fought aggressively for immunity from Iraqi law.

Either Blackwater is culpable in the deaths of these three Americans, or they aren’t. It would seem that our own laws would be sufficient to determine that. Apparently Blackwater doesn’t trust that justice will prevail (at least not THEIR way), so they will stop at nothing to screw these men’s widows more than they already have.
Fine. If Blackwater is subject to Sharia law while working in Afghanistan, let’s apply this to ALL of our contractors — Blackwater, Halliburton, KBR, et al., and make them subject to the law of whatever country they are operating in.
Doesn’t Sharia law dictate that a hand shall be amputated as penalty for stealing? (just kidding — that’s not done in Iraq, and only in heavy Taliban areas of Afghanistan)

June 26th, 2008 at 1:52 pmReading the link, it says that Sharia doesn’t hold a company responsible for the action of its employees (of course, I have to ask how big companies were and how much control they had in the early days of Sharia? As opposed to the relatively recent formation in US law which in certain instances ascribes the same responsibilities to a company as it does a person).
So let me guess the progression:
*) Sharia should be employed so that the company can’t be sued.
