Reid plans a ‘Coburn Omnibus.’

Reid plans a ‘Coburn Omnibus.’

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is planning to bring forward a “Coburn Omnibus” in July that would “wrap most if not all of the bills held by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) into one large measure to be voted on by the Senate.” Coburn is blocking roughly 100 bills, including ones that fund breast cancer research and screen soldiers for signs of suicide risk. Most recently, Coburn placed a hold on an HIV/AIDS prevention bill, although Senate negotiators have reportedly reached a “tentative” agreement to move forward on that legislation.

I guess I don’t understand the process. If Coburn can put a hold on 100 bills, why can’t Dodd or Feingold put a hold on the FISA bill?

  2. unbelievable says:

Someone please explain to me how one Republican Senator can block 100 bills, but 15 Democratic Senators couldn’t block one today (FISA immunity)?

  3. muzz says:

    #2 – Great point. I don’t get it either.

  4. unbelievable says:

    kraftysue – great minds? :)

  5. paleolib says:

Hopefully one of those bills involves giving Oklahoma back to the Indians.

  6. ralph the wonder llama says:

Once in a while ol’ Harry Reid comes up with a winning idea.

  7. RUCerious says:

This is, in my understanding a Senate ‘convention’ as opposed to a rule. Any Senator can place a hold on a bill, but there’s no legal basis for it, outside the Senate rules. If the Senate gets pissed enough, they could revoke the rule.

  8. alphainfinityomega says:

They should slip Coburn under that ‘bus’ while they are at it.

    _AIO_

  9. unbelievable says:

The more I examine Republican motives, the even more I dislike what organized religion represents. George Carlin was right. All the things they oppose – especially humanitarian issues – are based in a false sense of religious morality against other people they unfairly judge as inferior, or worse.

If only these people could be subjected to the very ills they seek to allow to perpetuate… Then there might indeed be justice.

  10. TeleMan says:

Coburn is blocking roughly 100 bills,

Okay, if this one idiot can hold up this much progress, why is it so damn hard for the (D)’s to stop the anti-Constitutional FISA crap!

  11. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: how can they block something they support…duuh.

    Fifteen Democrats voted against it.

Try reading some actual news, please.

  12. TeleMan says:

Oops, kraftysue beat me to it. (Note to self, read all comments first, then post.)

  13. Chris L says:

Weren’t the republicans complaining just recently about not getting an up or down vote? Bush made that part of his State of the Union speech.

    You’ll have to excuse rogersse.

    He’s stupid.

  15. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: minority shouldn’t block majority, no matter what.

No matter what? So, if your family members all want to fulfill a suicide pact, and you, the sole voice of dissent do not, then, by your argument, you should have to go along with it just because you are the minority?

See, the problem with absolutist statments is that if someone can offer a single excpetion to them, they are immediately invalid.

Instead, try saying, in most cases, the majority should rule. Exceptions should be in cases where the majority rule hurts others. (Thomas Jefferson said that a democracy is mob rule where 51% have the right to repress the other 49% – and why the US is a Republic Democracy instead of a true majority rules Democracy. The majority is not always right).

  16. ralph the wonder llama says:

I shouldn’t have said that about rogerse. He does try.

    He’s just… not very bright.

  17. unbelievable says:

ralph the wonder llama Says: You’ll have to excuse rogersse. He’s stupid.

    LOL

Interesting how much he hangs out here. I think he must like it. :)

    try telling Mitch McConnell that.

rogerse Says: minority shouldn’t block majority, no matter what.

    try telling John Boehner that.

  20. rmwarnick says:

Where are the obstructionist senators when you need them? I hope Senator Dodd or somebody can stop the FISA bill. Majority Leader Reid could stop it by keeping it off the floor, why doesn’t he?

  21. muzz says:

rogerse Says: minority shouldn’t block majority, no matter what.

So I guess that means that Al Gore won in 2000 and the last 8 years have just been a really bad dream

So about that medical marijuana and death with dignity stuff?

    spot on!

  24. spasticnapjerk says:

There are people in Oklahoma that aren’t religous nut-cases. Just not very many of them.

  25. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: since when is democracy more about whats right, which is relative, and not what is supported…

You really should go and audit a third grade history class… Seriously.

so you support the lone senator blocking 100 bills.

No, I think his reasons are religious and hurt other people. Sheesh, your reading comprehension is really appalling as well. It would help if you actually TRIED to think on occasion. Eventually, you’d start getting the ang of it.

  26. McWars says:

rogerse got thrown against all four walls of the basement by Dr. Matt for too long, and now the troll’s strategy is stalk unbelievable with the expectation of a different result?

You’ve got one chance of winning an argument here at TP, troll, and that’s against another troll.

  27. pluege says:

its jaw-dropping astounding that reid would honor holds by a supreme whack job like colburn on 100 bills Americans need and want, but when it came to protecting American’s civil rights and the Constitution with the very sane hold by Dodd on a very flawed FISA bill, Americans are out of luck.

Could someone please explain how reid survives – literally, how he can live with the cognitive dissonance in his brain?

And they leave as soon as possible.
I spent 30 years in Norman, OK, from 1994 til 2000…

  29. McWars says:

I don’t know what ranks above the other in terms of laughter — Grampy McSame or Dr. Matt’s rogerse quoteunquote parody.

  30. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: Your only arguing ’cause you don’t support this bill, but its a bad blocking 1 bill or 100.

    Prove it. Prove your argument.

I already explained that blocking a bill that hurts others – and blockng AIDS research hurts other – is wrong, while blocking a bill that violates the Constitution is noble. Can you truly not see the difference bewteen the two?

The ‘bad’ isn’t in blocking a bill – it’s in the bill itself.

Sheesh. You doesn’t even get how ridiculous you are.

So you agree with George W. Bush that the Constitution is a “god damn piece of paper.”

    Stupid.

  32. ggibson1 says:

And a hold cannot be put on the FISA bill why?

  33. Witch1 says:

Excuse me, EXCUSE ME, HELLO IS ANY ONE LISTENING AND WATCHING.? 105 in the whore house voted for this FISA madness…They call themselve’s dem’s? yah sure you betcha. Not,,,,Now even Patty Murrey in my state voted for it, shit..Had enough yet…I have..Blessings

  34. unbelievable says:

    McWars,

If nothing else, because I doubt rogerse is educatable, I think it’s done a lot of good to debunk these people in public forums. I’ve had many students tell me that they have developed their own views of such issues based on such dialog – ultimately chooing the better, more logical arguments. It’s the only point I can see in engaging him. Shrinking the Bush base even further…

  35. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: I can, with your idea, argue aids research is a waste of money, and not worth adressing.

Then do it. By all means, do it. Make a valid argument. I bet you cannot.

    McWars Says:

Grampy McSame, by far. Mock_roger is hilarious, but Grampy McSame makes me spray the monitor with coffee.

Oops, I think I have coffee grounds in my Depends!

  37. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

We really do need to do something about this practice. I think it should be banned. It gives way too much power to one individual.

Well that’s what the Republiscums have been doing for almost two years now. Nice to know that you are opposed to what they are doing.

  39. unbelievable says:

Oh rogerse – stop reasrching the kool-aid database for a scripted response and make your own argument…

  40. unbelievable says:

rogerse Says: what is there to argue, you believe a few individuals can sometimes know better than everyone else..

Argue that funding for AIDS research “is a waste of money, and not worth adressing.” You said you could do it with my logic, so go on and live up to your word.

    Case in point: women’s suffrage

Case in point: civil rights movement

  42. gummitch says:

    arggh. Should be abolitionists

  43. Witch1 says:

Why doe’s anyone want to play with roger dodger? Send him back under the bridge where he belong’s or back to a wet basement like a newt….Blessings

  44. RantingTommy says:

You get stupider throughout the day. What time do you start drinking?

  45. RantingTommy says:

Pure democracy is 5 wolves and a sheep voting on who is for dinner.

That’s why we have a CONSTITUTION. (even though freedom scares sissies like rogerse sooooooo much)

unbelieveable, I swear you’ve become like one of those parents who understands their infant’s babbling language and can translate it for the aunts and uncles.

  49. unbelievable says:

I share a computer lab with another Instructor. Last night, while my students were solving a problem I’d given them, I was watching the other Instructor teach his students.

His method was to tell them what to do, step by step, and watch as they simply repeated his commands. They didn’t have to do any critical thinking for themselves, or solve any problems.

I think this is indicative of our education system, and why too many people like rogerse exist in our country. They simply follow a leader and never once learn a single critical thinking skill for themselves.

  50. unbelievable says:

LOL. Unfortunately, I have a rightwing conservative brother who is just like him. Really – I wish I didn’t understand… :)

    Dyslexic People Untie!!!

  53. Alecto says:

#26 still makes no sense to me. I cannot decipher it. I have not had enough rogerse. No, I do not want more, I just want to be in on the laugh.
