Congress lifts travel restrictions on Nelson Mandela.

Yesterday, the House and the Senate worked out final legislation that “will remove from U.S. databases any notation characterizing the ANC and its leaders — including Nobel Laureate and former South African President Nelson Mandela — as terrorists.” Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has voiced support lifting the restrictions — even though the State Department has repeatedly opposed the bill — and it now heads to President Bush for his signature.

Update Today, Nelson Mandela is celebrating his "90th birthday with a giant concert in London" in support of his global AIDS campaign.

Wow. That was big of them.

  2. Paul W says:

…he was once considered by the American government to be affiliated with a terrorist organization.

According to this source, the bill was drafted more than five years ago but was adamantly opposed by State and the Republican-controlled Congress. Lawyers at the State Department “fought it tooth and nail,” arguing that if the A.N.C. was removed from the list then other groups would want to be removed, too, the staffer said.

Clearly demonstrating that anyone who disagrees with them or even appears to disagree with them is automatically labeled a teerorist.

Has Condi lead a coup at Foggy Bottom? First, there was Bush’s statement on North Korea; and, now this. Look out, Cheney about to have a major coronary event; and, it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.

How do I get my travel restriction to Cuba lifted?

  5. Crusty Old Bastard says:

It is my oponion that the ban should not have been lifted. Instead it should have been transferred from Mr. Mandella to Condom, “She needs all the protection she can get”, Rice herself.

  6. Leftside Annie says:

Heh. Perhaps we ought to designate George Bush, Dick Cheney, John Yoo, Karl Rove, David Addington, Condi Rice — and all the rest of them terrorists – so we can restrict *their* travel.

    George! NO PARAGUAY FOR YOU!!

  7. woodguy says:

Did Kindasleazy’s department do a flip-flop because this an election year? Perhaps the African American voters will forget how Shrub let them die in the streets of New Orleans and vote for McShrub. And perhaps I will win the lottery tomorrow. Or perhaps it will just seem like I won the lottery when Obama sends Shrub packing in Jan. 09.

Insert “is” after this @ 7.

I think we should require that they travel to The Hague.

Nobel Laureate and former South African President Nelson Mandela is so scary, did you know that he is BLACK???

Good Gawd, why do we have ignorant children running our government?

Meanwhile, the paperwork on Steve Biko is pending…

“…arguing that if the A.N.C. was removed from the list then other groups would want to be removed, too, the staffer said.”

…and the State Department would then be powerless to resist other teorist’s requests, for feqr of accusations of being unfair?

That’s the arguyment from grown-up lawyers? Apart from being the most criminal in recent memory, this administration is surely and unequivicably the most infantile.

  14. Bushie says:

Great, now if only the NO FLY LIST database could be updated to allow him in! Nah

  15. dbadass says:

    or the contras?

  16. shoeless says:

    or the Michigan Militia?

  17. SpoxLogic says:

Please forgive me for asking this. But, when did Apartheid in South Africa end and when was it that Mr mandela became President?
And they’re just removing the ANC from the terrorist list. Seems like quite a few admins were asleep at the switch on thsi one. (As much as I’d like to blame the Bushies for all that is wrong, I jsut can’t do it on this one).

Yeah, and I’ll bet they moved him right over to the “HIV/AIDS” travel restriction list.

I hope Nelson never has to come to our pathetic country again until we revert to law from anarchy. I can’t believe that he has been labeled a terrorist for this long for helping to end Apartheid. You can see how our leaders really feel about freedom. Clearly, they are not “for it”. They have to make special pronouncements.
    This is truly disgusting.

  23. MapleStreet says:

Let’s look at the facts about Mandela:

    1) 90 years old
    2) Nobel Peace Prize recipient
    3) disagrees with Bush

    no question – he’s a terrorist!
