According to a new Pentagon report released today, “the Taliban has regrouped after its initial fall from power in Afghanistan. The new report offers a rather dim view of progress in the nearly 7-year-old war, declaring that the Taliban has ‘coalesced into a resilient insurgency’”:
Noting that insurgent violence continues to climb, the report said that despite efforts to capture and kill key leaders, the Taliban is likely to “maintain or even increase the scope and pace of its terrorist attacks and bombings in 2008.” At the same time, the Afghan Army and national police are progressing slowly, and still lack the trainers they need.
The report comes as the “number of foreign forces in Afghanistan killed in June has reached 39, the highest monthly toll of the war,” as CNN reported yesterday. More on Afghanistan in today’s Progress Report.

.
I guess Iraq’s mission accomplished that… NO?
Eh, Musharraf?
.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:47 pmNow they will be strong enough to launch an attack to swing the election to Grumpy McCain. Mission Accomplished. And, Cheney will be given a new position in the Cabinet. Oy vey.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:49 pmAbsolutely brilliant; George W’s done yet another W class job! As he’s done his entire life, he’s turned possible success into stunning failure! Screwed up the hunt for Bin Laden? Check! Passed up on the chance to rebuild Afghinistan and destroy the Taliban? Check! Started a needless war of choice and destroyed a second country? Check! Started a civil war in that country that will breed hatered and ill-will towards America for generations to come? Check! Heck of a job Georgie!
June 27th, 2008 at 5:52 pmImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
Oops! Dang! And we were hoping everyone would forget about the other occupation.

June 27th, 2008 at 5:55 pmThat’s what happens when you start a war and then IGNORE IT.
Republicans can’t govern, and they certainly shouldn’t be allowed to start wars.

June 27th, 2008 at 5:55 pmBravo, herr dubayh!!! 5 years, 500 billion dollars, and 4000 US troops later that and nothing has changed….You moron!
June 27th, 2008 at 5:55 pmHey, weren’t these the guys who support AQ training camps way back when?
That other country that Bush destroyed and then forgot about.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:56 pmOh great! Another republican sign of success.
June 27th, 2008 at 5:57 pmThe nation to the east of Afghanistan has nukes and is the new home to the Taliban, but our government puts all of its efforts in Iraq and is rattling the saber of war now with Iran.
Yeah…clearly the message is oil profits before the rest of the world’s stability.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:01 pmJust remember that this is the mess McCain has hitched his wagon to. Just like Bush depended on the “advice” from Perle, Wolfowitz, and Rumsfeld; McCain looks to take the Iraq baton from these clowns.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:02 pmYeah…clearly the message is oil profits before the rest of the world’s stability.
And the rest of the planet is waiting for us to do something about this criminal administration. I feel so sorry for those brave soldiers and their families. 5 years of grief, pain, and loss; All for nothing.
I am sure even the trolls would agree with us.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:04 pmThis kind of report is certain to hurt the troops’ morale, and put a dent in the war effort!! It plays straight into the terrorists’ hands!!!
Why does the Pentagon hate America!?

June 27th, 2008 at 6:08 pmNo StratRat. Our trolls make it abundantly clear that they despise any who show superior human qualities. I’m quite certain they have nothing but contempt for anyone “stupid” enough to serve their country and those who pay the ultimate price should have kept their heads up.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:09 pmrogerse Says:
then they need more troops…
June 27th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
Unfortunately Bushco has allowed the bulk of our troops to be pinned down by a handful of fanatics in Iraq. There are no more troops without a draft.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:10 pmRawjersee, then get your ass down to the recruiting station, stat!

Join up, coward.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:21 pmEven though the military has lowered their recruiting standards, they still do not accept someone as mentally impaired as racist_rogers.

June 27th, 2008 at 6:27 pmHelp The Taliban Regroup
June 27th, 2008 at 6:28 pmVote Republiscum 08
Cheney: So?
Lieberman: Another sign of success!
McCain: My friends, I’ve been saying this all along, my friends.
Bush: Afgan? Yea, I got one on my sofer. I curl up with it to take my nap. heh heh heh
Meanwhile, more of our brave troops are being killed and disabled every single day, but our good Dems made sure the pass that war funding with no mention of a timetable. Shame on you!
PEACE
June 27th, 2008 at 6:29 pmWell rog. I’m more than 20 years past my fighting days. My first career choice was a Naval Aviator but, believe it or not, I was prevented from serving due to health reasons. If allowed I would have served proudly and honorably.
Instead, I honor those who serve by learning all I can about military history and I try to vote for people who fully understand the dire consequences of war and will, hopefully, learn enough from history to avoid spending the blood of our youth needlessly.

ralph, we did, but then he decides to go all ad lib, and see what results. Jeez.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:30 pmNPR reports that the Afghani people are not supporting the Kabul Govt. because of Corruption, Cronyism, and Incompetence.
Fix that, or more troops won’t solve the problem.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:30 pmAny Taliban under this table? Nope! How bout under here? Heh, Heh! Where’s my goddamn banana?

June 27th, 2008 at 6:30 pm
What should we expect? Bushco formed the Afghan government in their own image. Corrupt, incompetent, and self absorbed.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:33 pmDo we remember when bush said that we’d “snatched defeat from the… er, um, we won’t be defeated”? How about “bin Laden? I just don’t think about him that much”?
Yes, this admin DID snatch defeat from the jaws of what appeared to be a clear victory. But there was just so much money to be made in Iraq…

June 27th, 2008 at 6:34 pmIt’s the imported BushCo Democracy…
The Corruption, Cronyism, and Incompetence.
Oops! I forgot “delusional and detached”.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:35 pmWhat really p*sses me off , is that the Whole World was behind America’s efforts to Remove the Taliban from power, and destroy Al Qaeda.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:39 pmNow look at us!
Kreist, Badger, do I have to?
June 27th, 2008 at 6:42 pmBadger, you are so very right! In addition, the whole world was behind us for the days, weeks and months after 9/11.
bush p1ssed all of that good will away, and then a whole lot more, and with it went the lives of thousands of soldiers, hundreds of thousands of Iraqis, and TRILLIONS of dollars (especially if you include the $2 TRILLION that Rumsfeld admitted was missing at the pentagon on 9/10/01)
It will take years, if not decades, to repair the damage done by bush.
The whole world is now watching us again, and electing Obama will be a HUGE first step in the right direction.
PEACE
June 27th, 2008 at 6:45 pmI think we should observe a moment of silence for the dear departed roger.. That’s long enough. Buh-bye.
June 27th, 2008 at 6:48 pmIt will be back and stupider as ever.

I am sure even the trolls would agree with us.
We can’t get rid of one, because the other would pardon them. Then no one has enough courage to put both Bush and Cheney up for impeachment. The only way for us to do something is to vote for Obama and oust all the GOP incumbents as possible in November, so there is no obstructionists to a Democratic Executive and Legislative branches that can start to reverse the last eight nightmarish years.

This is the same mistake authoritarians make every time. To them world conflict is like a game of Risk where if you eliminate enough of the right colored pieces you win.
Instead of understanding why poor and desperate people tend to gravitate to the extremists and fighting the battle by giving them better alternatives, they insist on playing the never ending game of attrition.

Wonder what Afghanis and Pakastanis think of the invading forces ?
June 27th, 2008 at 11:19 pmBy God, my friends, we’re gonna establish democracies throughout the Middle East if we have to kill every goddamn arab and mooslim to do it!
June 27th, 2008 at 11:45 pmThe surge is working!
The terrorists & dead-enders are on the run, running so fast that they re-group and fight back!!

June 28th, 2008 at 12:10 amThere’s a war in Afghanistan?
June 28th, 2008 at 12:56 amThis article details the strength of the Taliban in Pakistan’s Northwesst Province, and the likelihood that they will take over a major city there, Peshawar.
http://iht.com/ articles/ 2008/ 06/ 27/ asia/ peshawar.php
Bush’s lack of diplomacy with Mushariff has just turned into more lack thereof with the new administration in Islamabad. When a joint intervention might have stalled the Taliban rise, Mushariff kept us out. Bush did not have the willingness or foresight to team with him and the Pakistani Army to get OBL, or the core of the Taliban. The US had not convinced the Pakistanis that terrorism was a real threat to them, that they could not ultimately continue to buy off the Taliban-leaning tribal chiefs.
So, is the next step that Pakistan goes hard core Islamist, and the Taliban has nuclear capability? Or do we now go to war with Pakistan, which is becoming a real nuclear threat, rather than Iran?
By the way, how is that mid-east strategy working out Mr Cheney/Bush?
June 28th, 2008 at 8:57 amWhat happened to the NeoCon’s and Likud’s great plan to route the world’s oil supplies, and create a new Cold War?

June 28th, 2008 at 9:42 amBreaking news from the British Journal of Nutsology.
June 28th, 2008 at 9:55 amIt is now a proven scientific fact that being republican is proof positive of insanity says Dr Elmwood Futherthom.
All republicans should be treated, and some can recover.
However die hard bush supporters are beyond help and should be quarantined as soon as possible for the greater good of humanity; these people have lost all signs of being human and have become a danger to themselves and others. If republicans are spotted in your area they should be pointed out to local mental health professionals. The sooner the better. That is all.
Bush and Company didn’t believe that this was a place that wouldn’t give up. They ignored the history lessons of the Soviets and the British and others.
Bush is a disgrace. Impeach.
June 28th, 2008 at 10:42 amCASPIAN OIL CASPIAN OIL CASPIAN CASPIAN OIL CASPIAN OIL
Remember the TALIBAN were business partners until about 2000, when they went to Houston, Texas to UNOCAL headquarters as guests and many were trained in oil technologies . So they weren’t too bad then to do business with, until they started blowing up religious statues and the treatment of women became PUBLIC . Then former cIA director’s daughter stepped in as PR person to help clean up their image .
(look at guys on 9 -11 commission , several are involved in Afghan OIL pipeline , ie Richard Ben Veniste sued BRIDAS(from spain i believe ) to stop them from building their pipeline in Afghanistan .
Problem was the Taliban (and prudently correct) wanted to tap into small portion of oil(open line)that passed through their country, nah Unocal refused .
9-11 happened around a year later , then the invasion and several weeks later …KARZAI (CIA op.) signed an OIL PIPELINE DEAL with Pakistan and Uzbekistan . BADABING , mission accomplished and the occupation for no reason other then to control the regions oil and other resources WILL continue , along with the deaths of thousands of Afghans , the building of U.S. controlled prisons, huge bases and for what ..a few hundred radicals riding around in the back of Toyota pick up trucks w/ ak 47s …ya right .
The OCCUPATION WILL NEVER END , NOR WILL THE KILLING ..NEXT STOP NIGERIAN OIL AND NO DOUBT RADICALS THERE ARE BEING FUNDED BY SOME INTELLIGENCE AGENCY, TO GIVE REASON FOR INVASION AND OCCUPATION THERE .
June 28th, 2008 at 2:28 pmThis is a joke, right? Note to Pentagon, next time pay attention to the news over the last 30-40 year or so, the Taliban fought Soviet troops to a standstill for over a decade.
It’s not a stretch to say folks in Afghanistan have become “resilient” over the last couple of thousand years or so. Inhospitable living conditions and being the crossroads for numerous countries to fight each other - and the Afghanis - will make a person resilient, definitely.
