Polar scientists say that “for the first time in human history, ice is on course to disappear entirely from the North Pole this year.” The scientists “believe the chances of a totally ice-free North Pole this summer are greater than 50:50 because the normally thick ice formed over many years at the Pole has been blown away and replaced by huge wathes of thinner ice formed over a single year.”
California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-CA) said John McCain is “blowing smoke” about the impact of offshore oil drilling. “Anyone who tells you that this will bring down our gas prices immediately or anytime soon is blowing smoke,” Schwarzenegger said. “To look for new ways to feed our addiction (to oil) is not the answer.”
Conservative senators blocked a Medicare bill yesterday, meaning that doctors will “face a 10 percent cut in Medicare payments next week.” The bill averting the cuts overwhelmingly passed the House Tuesday, in a 355-59 vote.
“Barack Obama will travel to Iraq and Afghanistan before the Democratic convention in August, Democratic sources tell CBS News. Earlier today, Obama spoke to Iraqi president, Jalal Talabani, and told Talabani he will be visiting the war zone soon.”
On the trail today: Sen. John McCain will hold “an employee town hall meeting at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the General Motors Lordstown Assembly Plant in Warren.” Sens. Barack Obama (D-IL) and Hillary Clinton (D-NY) hold a “Unite for Change” rally Friday at Unity Elementary School in Unity, N.H.
The Senate yesterday approved at $162 billion war spending plan, which includes “a doubling of GI Bill college benefits for troops and veterans” and “a 13-week extension of unemployment benefits and $2.7 billion in emergency flood relief for the Midwest.” The bill now heads to President Bush for his signature.
According to research done by Faith In Public Life, James Dobson’s attack on Barack Obama was mentioned a total of 189 times on CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News yesterday. By comparison, a new Pew Survey “documenting the diversity and tolerance of people of faith and the growing consensus around issues like poverty and the environment” was mentioned only 8 times.
Oil prices reached a record high of $140 yesterday, which, combined with “mounting anxiety over the health of such disparate industries as banking, auto manufacturing and technology,” sent the Dow Jones industrial average “tumbling by 3 percent to its lowest level in almost two years.”
Yesterday the Supreme Court struck down the so-called Millionaires Amendment, which imposed special rules for wealthy political candidate financing their own campaigns. The 5-4 decision said the law forced wealthy candidates to “choose between the First Amendment right to engage in unfettered political speech and subjection to discriminatory fund-raising limitations.”
And finally: Senate Appropriations Committee chairman Robert Byrd (D-WV) was in high spirits yesterday. He was “wheeled into the hearing room just before the start of a committee markup” and bellowed, “Hello, folks!” to the packed room. People then cheered when he yelled, “Applause, applause, applause!” Seeing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) walk in, he welcomed her with, “Hello there, darling Dianne” and began singing, “Diaaaanne, oooh Dianne!” He also pointed out the “growth” on Sen. Pete Domenici’s (R-NM) face.
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
It’s a shame that Medicare payments to doctors is going to get cut 10% because of obstructionist repuglycans.
Seniors, please help us vote these pricks out of office.
Thank you.

US wars have helped al-Qa’eda, says report
The Senlis Council, which has an extensive network of researchers in Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia, said frustration with war and unemployment was underpinning the insurgency against western forces.
A survey conducted in Iraq last month found that 46% of young men said they were “angry all the time”.
“The unstable and increasingly angry populations of these countries need to hear why they can live in a stable and prosperous future,” she said. “Otherwise they are very vulnerable to violent recruitment by violent groups.”

June 27th, 2008 at 9:18 amCNN’s Electoral Map: Two states shift to Obama
(CNN) — Two more states have shifted to Barack Obama’s column in the new CNN Electoral Map that charts the candidates’ strength leading up to the November election.
“Toss-up” states Minnesota and Wisconsin were re-designated to “Lean-Obama” Friday, giving the presumptive Democratic nominee another 20 electoral votes in CNN’s current estimate. The Illinois senator now has 231 electoral votes — 39 shy of winning the nomination.
CNN made the change after new polling conducted by Quinnipiac University showed that Obama holds double-digit leads over presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in both states. CNN’s analysis estimates McCain has 194 electoral votes.
This is only a CNN estimate and is likely to change many more times in the lead up to the election.
The Quinnipiac surveys, released Thursday, showed Obama with a 17-point lead in Minnesota, 54-37 percent, and a 13 point lead in Wisconsin, 52-39 percent.

Bush has been doing this to Medicare ever since he came to office. He is starving the doctors and hospitals to force Medicare patients to purchase the add-on insurance offered by the for-profit insurance companies just to get basic medical care.

I think this one was a threatened filibuster, not a hold by one Republican. The Republicans will get tired of that pretty quickly. I sure do wish there was some way we could get rid of most of the Democrats in the Senate. Unfortunately we will have to vote for Republicans in order to do that. Hopefully next time there will be people willing to challenge the sitting Senators in a primary. June 27th, 2008 at 9:40 amMy community is among the many with doctors refusing to see Medicare patients, because of Medicare’s low rate of reimbursement. The Senate’s vote not to cancel a scheduled cut in reimbursement to doctors will surely result in more people who depend on Medicare being turned away. What the Hell do Senators care? They have their own gold-plated healthcare plan not available to ordinary folks.
But don’t get the idea that Medicare is stingy in all cases: The NYTimes reported in a June 25, 2008 editorial: “According to federal officials, Medicare currently pays $1,825 for a hospital bed that can be bought online for $754, and $4,023 for a power wheelchair that can be bought online for $2,174.” The Times says intense lobbying is responsible for such Medicare generosity.

June 27th, 2008 at 9:43 amAfter-Tax Incomes Show Big Gains
(WASHINGTON) — The millions of economic stimulus payments gave a massive jolt to household finances in May, sending after-tax incomes up by the largest amount in 33 years.
The payments helped boost consumer spending by the largest amount in six months.
The administration is hoping that the $106.7 billion in stimulus payments being made this year to 130 million households will be enough to offset serious drags on the economy at the moment from a prolonged housing slump, a severe credit crisis and soaring energy bills.
However, economists are worried that the boost from the stimulus checks will be only temporary and once the checks are spent, the risks of the economy falling into a deep recession will rise.

They don’t need more leases. They can drill right now. US oil companies are not using 3/4 of their current leases. We thought we were cynical about it before raygun but we have been shown that we really had no idea how bad it could be……now we know.
give me back the cynicysm of the 60’s any day. I’ll never complain again.
June 27th, 2008 at 1:21 pmYea, but what do you hear from conservatives? That this warming is natural. Bulllll crap. There is no way in hell this warming is natural when the fastest warmth we ever had in the past was a 5 degree increase in 10,000 years. (The Weather Makers by Tim Flannery). The pseudo-conservatives want us to believe it’s natural with their oil/coal paid propaganda so they can get maximize profits in the short term before Americans go “Heyyyy wait a minute!”.
Judging by all the recent weather events and all the unusual events happening around the world, I would say global warming is happening at a faster rate then we predicted and this could serious put our species at dangerous risk.
June 27th, 2008 at 1:21 pmMaybe the Supreme Court believes we need more guns in the hands of citizens to fight the spread of fascism in this country as propagated by Bushco. Either that or they’re nucking futz.
