Cheney ‘tried to block North Korea nuclear deal.’»

Earlier this week, the Bush administration the Bush administration announced that it was taking North Korea off the State Department’s list of state sponsors of terrorism after the country declared its nuclear program to the outside world. Vice President Dick Cheney has not hid his disapproval of the move. Now, the Telegraph reports that Cheney tried to block the deal before it happened:

Vice President Dick Cheney fought furiously to block efforts by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to strike a controversial US compromise deal with North Korea over the communist state’s nuclear programme, the Telegraph has learned.

“The exchanges between Cheney’s office and Rice’s people at State got very testy. But ultimately Condi had the President’s ear and persuaded him that his legacy would be stronger if they reached a deal with Pyongyang,” said a Pentagon adviser who was briefed on the battle.

On Friday, the New York Times described the North Korea deal as the State Department’s win in a “major battle against the Cheney camp.”

Let me see if I understand this…

The deal is approved not on its merits, but largely because “… [Secretary Rice] persuaded [the President] that his legacy would be stronger if they reached a deal with Pyongyang.”

It’s really always been ‘about him,’ hasn’t it? How can even 25% find something to support in the conduct of this self-serving, narcissistic fool we collectively elected to once, but twice? We a doomed…

hey r, since you seem to want to hang out where you’re not wanted. Why don’t you explain why bush abandoned talks with North Korea. They had stopped all acitivity and the UN verified that they had stopped their nuclear activities.

shortly after bush reversed our treaty with N. Korea they started up again and now they have nukes…..how’s that sound when you put it in perspective.

Now we’re right back where we were before bush came along, except the N Koreans have leverage that they did not have before…..bombs.

Same with the stock market fool. We are just about where we were when bush took over except for the lost lives and treasury…..thanks fool, you are responsible for that.

  23. Gregor Samsa Says:

Let’s not forget this is the second time the Bush administration claims diplomacy works, Libya being the first.

In both cases, the Bush administration had to deal with countries with an ongoing nuclear weapons program, and that supposedly had terrorism-sponsoring regimes.

So, IMHO this situation highlights that 1) diplomacy works, 2) Iraq is a war of choice, 3) American military presence in the MiddleEast is to secure oil resources, 4) George Bush is very concerned with how things look (read opinion polls) in spite of his claims to the contrary, and 5) he still has hopes that he will be redeemed by history. Fat chance on that last one.

U.S. presidential candidate and governor of New Mexico Bill Richardson, center, poses with his delegation members on arrival at an airport in Pyongyang, North Korea Sunday, April 8, 2007. The four-day trip that started Sunday with the endorsement of the administration of U.S. President George W. Bush comes days before a crucial deadline in a recent nuclear disarmament accord. [AP]
WASHINGTON - New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, leading a U.S. delegation on a visit to North Korea, said he believed Pyongyang was ready to end its nuclear weapons program and improve relations with the United States, NBC Nightly News reported on Sunday.

Richardson’s delegation arrived ahead of an April 14 deadline for North Korea to begin dismantling its nuclear program under an agreement in six-party talks with the United States, South Korea, Japan, Russia and China.

“I believe for the first time they do want to enter into an agreement with the six-party countries and they want a better relationship with the United States,” Richardson told NBC.

“They know that the key is dismantling their nuclear weapons.”

Richardson’s delegation is on a mission to oversee the return of remains of American soldiers from the Korean War but many hope to get a sense of the reclusive communist country’s thinking about the nuclear issue during the visit.

You are wrong on two counts. Pres Bush originally claimed that Libya’s decision was a result of his “quiet diplomacy”.

Libya didn’t spontaneously give up its WMD program after Iraq was invaded: They had tried for years to get international sanctions lifted. Settling the Lockerbie mess and giving up their WMD program were all part of that strategy.

Cheney, Rumsfeld, and the neocons have been at odds with Colin Powell, Rice, and the State Dept. Up until now, Bush has always gone with Cheney’s advice…resulting in our current Foreign Affairs Nightmare.
It must be dawning on President Bush, how wrong Cheney and the neocons have been.
