Fox News losing its lead over rival cable networks.

Fox News “has seen its once formidable advantage over CNN erode in this presidential election year, as both CNN and MSNBC have added viewers at far more dramatic rates.” The New York Times reports:

cable.jpgCNN has added 170,000 viewers a night, on average, when compared with the last presidential year, while Fox has shed about 90,000, according to Nielsen. (MSNBC, which added 181,000 viewers in that audience, much of it courtesy of gains by “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” still lagged in third place, with 303,000.)

A Fox News spokeswoman, Dana Klinghoffer, refused “several requests” for comment about the channel’s ratings and strategy.

Update Steve Benen writes, "[A]s the conservative movement falls apart, and the country is ready to move away from the Bush/Republican status quo, Fox News’ schtick has grown pretty tiresome."

I used to be a sucker for Fox News and a Bush supporter (no surprise) but then I realized it can’t be news when most of the coverage is opinion based. I always had it in the back of my mind that something was wrong with the channel, but like a good Bush loyalist…you put wishful thinking over reason.

Eventually I realized this country is falling apart, I can’t continue to support this corrupt Republican regime and it’s underlings such as Fox Noise and Reich-wing radio. It is propaganda, pure and simple.

  7. Gregor Samsa says:

It is not surprising: If the talking heads at Fox”News” say it’s a sunny day, but when you look out the window it’s overcast or flat-out pouring, even the most die-hard kool-aid drinkers will begin to wonder.

And it doesn’t matter how much eye candy the producers put in front of the cameras (cleavage, short skirts, etc). Eventually, people will look for information somewhere else.

Which is not to say the other networks offer significantly more substantive information (Britney Spears’ meltdown, anyone?.)

  22. Fred says:

    TrippleKick Says:
    Fred,
Here’s a thought for you. Why don’t you simply not watch Fox News. Its all about choice.

I don’t. I still am an American that recognizes wrong when I see it though….what’s your problem. Imagine if the left had full control of the media and all you ever heard was what the left wants you to hear…..would you still be so callous? I doubt it.

But we have come to understand that you are not interested in fairness or equality. Its all about who the big dog is with youse guys.

Soon regulatory agencies will strip these propaganda machines of their ability to control the flow of information to Americans. It should be illegal for a media outlet to label themselves as “News” organizations when they are really political agents that never show opposing views. That is not fair and balanced and it is not news. It is however, propaganda. So get ready for some big changes.

  23. Fred says:

tripple jock itch, I’m done playing tiddlywinks with you. You spout bs as if it were gospel and sit on your high horse acting as if you have the inside track. Well if you’re so damned smart then how did we get in this mess? Get out of my yard.

  29. Gregor Samsa says:

    ~TrippleKick

Oh, but we all know what side Fox”News” is on: President Bush’s side, that’s who, the rest of the world be damned.

It doesn’t matter the state of the economy, the blunder of historical proportions that Iraq is, that people are dying in a war of choice, that jobs are not being created… none of that matters as long as they can sing the praises to their Dear (mis)Leader, and they can get halfwits (like you) buy the alternate reality they sell.

  30. Saint Augustine says:

What DribbleDick neglected to say about the soldiers watching Fox overseas is that it is only because they don’t have the option of changing the channel, either because of orders from higher up or the removal of other networks from their system.

But what else should we expect from rightwing republiscums who lie, and then lie about lying. What fools they are!

  31. barfly says:

You closet stalinist are all the same, if you can’t beat them in the arena of ideas, then just simply control them.

That’s a good depiction of the rubberstamps. They couldn’t see the country change, and decide to bring the troops home, because it interfered with their agenda, so they shut down debate, with “unamerican” slurs, and legislative posturing.

Remember Sensenbrenner, cutting off the mikes, and turning out the lights during a committee investigation? That’s the archetypical republican response to honest debate: shut it down at all costs.

  32. spanky1984 says:

Do you want us to take that to mean that all of our troops agree with you? Or are you just hiding behind them? Please don’t presume to speak for the troops. Don’t presume to speak for anyone but yourself.
Do you honestly think that opinions of the men and women of our armed forces can be summed up by what they watch in the mess hall. Very condescending, dude.
I don’t speak for the troops because I wouldn’t presume to, and I don’t think they don’t need some poster talking about them like they were a Nielsen ratings family.

  37. upside99 says:

    Just like in the WH.

  38. barfly says:

The authors of the left-wing blogs hate Fox because they hate America and don’t want the world to know that the Iraqi people, for the most part (not all of them) actually like the American Military and are appreciative of what they are doing for them.

Not judging by polls taken of Iraqis. And the tired “hate America” schtick is cliche.’ Are you still living in 2005? If so, you’ll find the country no longer supports your position. But feel free to keep using the “hates America” meme. It paints you as a political anachonism.

  39. barfly says:

  41. barfly says:

Perhaps johnsom would care to make a bet: I’ll bet you a hundred, that this time next year the military reverses policy, and allows other networks to broadcast to the troops.

    How about it?

  42. upside99 says:

SO, johnsom, you are in Iraq now, fighting your favorite war? Tell us how that’s working out for you?

  43. SP Biloxi says:

Fox Clown Network is losing its steam over the cable network. Bummer. I’m all broken up in tears over that. ;-)

Well, it was wonderful ride of emptying the viewers of crapola spin and being on the shirt tail of the Sith Lord Administration. But, folks are just plain worn out of the Fox News spin. The Clown network will lose its steam for good when the bubble boy is gone from office and if Obama win the Presidency. Then, I can offer BillO to mow my lawn if he can’t find employment.

  44. barfly says:

barfly, you have to read what I said, carefully. I realize many Americans who are on the left don’t hate America, they merely believe in the wrong things.

The authors of the left-wing blogs hate Fox because they hate America and don’t want the world to know that the Iraqi people, for the most part (not all of them) actually like the American Military and are appreciative of what they are doing for them.

The meaning seems ambiguous at best. Define “authors of leftwing blogs,” ’cause that definition could also cover those authoring posts on blogs.

And you can 86 the attitude.

  45. barfly says:

    johnsom Says:

    Please.

  46. TheToonGuy says:

I’d respond to JMom’s statements, but it’s pointless. His/her mind is already made up and nothing’s going to change it. They got their talking points from Rush and Billo, never questioning why anybody in this country would hate it as these pundits so blithefully claim. Go ahead – I bet you can’t answer why. What’s the motive?

And for the record I don’t believe Bush and his group of cronies hate America – it’s more like they see it as something to use and abuse and suck dry. That is what we’re fighting against. Perhaps if you used your brain to do more than parrot the talking points from your talk radio stations you’d get mad enough to protect this country too.

Why did we have so many ex-military running for office in ‘o6 as ANTI-war candidates?

  49. TheToonGuy says:

The belief that our Military want to stay in Iraq is like saying our firemen prefer to stay in burning buildings.

But, you don’t live next to a military base, so your comments are uninformed, sadly.

  52. barfly says:

Who said “they wanted to stay in Iraq”?

Isn’t that what wingnuts have been saying? That it’s necessary to stay, and finish the mission? Do try harder to keep up, old fellow.

  53. barfly says:

Or for clarity I should say, don’t wingnuts claim that the military’s enlisted folk overwhelmingly support staying to finish the mission? Where’s the beef, except for a few unproven assertions?

  54. barfly says:

There’s a big difference between “wanting to stay” and “doing some good and believing in their mission”.

Please explain the difference, in detail.

  55. TheToonGuy says:

What is that mission? Didn’t Bush declare the mission was over years ago? What are they there for? The Iraqis want them to leave. We want them back home. The only reason Bush and McCain won’t let them come home is because it would mean admitting that this whole operation was a failure.

  56. Saint Augustine says:

Johnsom probably does provide services to the troops. A lot of prostitutes live near military bases, ask John McSame about that. He’s lived at a lot of bases.

  57. barfly says:

  61. barfly says:

It’s just loopy to assert “There’s a big difference between “wanting to stay” and “doing some good and believing in their mission”, when one leads to the other. “Believing in the mission” would naturally lead one to “want to stay.” Except there’s little evidence to show that even a simple majority of soldiers in country actually supports the mission, so much as wants to survive, and wants his/her buddies to survive, as well.

  64. Saint Augustine says:

    What a putz.

  66. barfly says:

Some do that, but not most. So, meanwhile they’d appreciate a little credit for what they are doing.

Like McCain’s aversion to Webb’s GI amendment? How much appreciation did he show them?

  67. upside99 says:

    Johnsom,

But they are stop-lossed in, multiple tours, and all for an unnecessary and illegal war. They do have a right to distrust the BushCo Cabal. At least 80% of the rest of this country, and most of the world do, so they have a LOT of company!

  68. TheToonGuy says:

Simple question. What is the mission?

  69. barfly says:

If this was an all drafted military, I would agree with you, but you have to remember that these guys/gals enlisted.

Not for multiple deployments, spending more time in-country than with their families in the states. Your rhetoric exposes the paucity of your position. First, your assertion that they enlisted so they knew the risks, show a callous disregard for individual circumstance; and then you whine about showing them more respect.

    Hypocrite.

  70. upside99 says:

The problem for Fox, is that advertisers will be jumping ship, if the trend continues. They can’t keep playing the Paul Harvey routine, of mixing human interest stories with product endorsements. Viewers will come to negatively associate their products with news presentations, which, knowing Fox and their feelings for Democrats, will be overwhelmingly negative. Competitors will gain market share, and Fox will become a comedic punchline, again. The Fox gravy train might run out of advertisors to stoke the engine, and these poor guys might find themselves walking the tracks.

The “new” troll misses the point. (No surprise there.) Our national nightmare is coming to an end. The lies are being exposed and the liars will soon be kicked into obscurity. The venue is irrelevant.

  99. dixie blood says:

Fu(ksus nOoze is an unregistered illegal 527 group supporting the Fascist, Corporate, RePugniScum Criminal Mob!!!!!!!!

If there is justice they need to taste it with gusto!!! Prosecute the entire company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  100. upside99 says:

You REALLY think Faux is ‘fair and balanced’? How many Dems are on their payroll? (And Colmes doesn’t count. He checked his sack at the studio door when he agreed to roll under for hanitee-hee).

But go for it, keep watching your comfortable teddy-bear channel, with the ever tightening circle of supporters. BTW, have you ever watched that Faux Morning show? Are there any more Stoo-pid people on tv than that group of losers.

I get my news from BBC, PBS, and Jon Stewart, who has more credibility than most others, and it is a COMEDY show!

you keep saying your are going to leave. Your credibility is on the line.

  102. dixie blood says:

This JohnSome (a thing he problably does with little boys like a good little GOPediphile) just won’t keep his word and leave…He just lies and lies and lies…

    Go JohnSomeOneElse PIG!!!

  103. upside99 says:

    Hey Johnsom,

Refute this statement if you will: AIPAC is about as NeoCon and Zionist as it gets. SO, how do you argue the statement about him being a NeoCon? DO your research or crawl back under the porch. K?

Sometime in the mid-1970s, Blitzer also worked for the American Israel Public Affairs Committee as the editor of their monthly in house publication, the Near East Report.[4][5] While at AIPAC, Blitzer’s journalism focused on Middle East affairs as it relates to United States foreign policy. Contrary to popular speculation, Blitzer has never lobbied on behalf of AIPAC.

  104. pete says:

I’m with you upside. In fact, I refuse to subscribe to cable because I refuse to support corporate media. There’s no effing way in Hell I’ll pay anyone to lie.

  105. Saint Augustine says:

    johnsom Says:
you keep saying your are going to leave. Your credibility is on the line.

His courage to post his lies probably comes from two lines… neatly seperated on a mirror with a razor blade.

  106. upside99 says:

We need some better trolls; this isn’t even any fun any more. All the challenge has left when we get nothing but the Junior Varsity here.

  107. Fred says:

    johnsom Says:
The only difference now with all of the non-Fox stations is that they got sick of getting their clock cleaned and started to make it seem like they were fair and balanced also. Basically, they changed their format to make it seem like they weren’t the blatant leftists that they are.

Can’t let this little lie pass unhindered. It’s called the fairness doctrine. When the republicans repealed it then the corporate media was free to put whoever they wanted on the air…..thus….only republicans. It has nothing to do with clocks or the choice of the people watching.

Sorry you just don’t seem to understand how the big wide world works.

But FNC is still 1# and BOR has been 1# for over 5years!!

Did you ever stop to think that those more intelligent people that can actually go to the web or to nontraditional sources for news, actually does? That may explain why the TOTAL numbers of tv news audience has been steradily declining?

And why Obams has been so successful in fundraising on the ‘internets’ and Mc Depends admitted he can’t even use a computer?

All very important bits of info, don’t ya think?

  109. Zooey says:

Has johnsom gone out to the garden to eat a worm…?

    johnsom…?

  110. wwz says:

    Return to sanity?

I’m not so sure. Aren’t these people just fair weather Fox friends who showed no judgment in watching Fox –for years– to begin with? No, its not sanity. Just feckless, unprincipled posers who will side with those on the ‘winning’ side regardless.

  111. dbadass says:

Why would anyone fool with johnsom when Dennis D is souch a more obvious target?

  112. barfly says:

Heck, before Fox came around, we used to call CNN the Communist News Network. Then when Clinton came around, it was the Clinton News Network. Talk about propaganda, ever listen to Christiane Amanpour? Man that station used to ooze with news that portrayed America in the worst light possible.

And Blitzer made his bones on the Clinton scandal, publicizing every salacious tidbit the “elves” leaked. You can’t credibly argue that CNN was actively pro-Clinton, given the frequency with which they covered every lie, including the Vince Foster right-wing fantasies.

  113. curious says:

Fox is bound to lose viewers, but not soon enough. There will always be idiots that think it is journalism. And as long as the corporate media does such a stinking job, it really does not make a difference.

In case anyone has not been following the media coverage of the war, CBS gives it three or four minutes a week. And the other ABC and NBC don’t even give it that. A war that is costing thousands of lives in Iraq both citizens and our military, not to mention over two million displaced persons not to mention the hundreds of millions of dollars etc. And the media cannot be bothered to cover it.

And look out. Iran is next. As reprehensible as the Fox network is, it is not much worse then the main media.

We have no free objective press. The US used to be rated number one in the world. Now it is rated #44th in the world and falling. The Netherlands is now number one. And as long as people don’t demand more, they won’t get it.

The news in the main media has gone from a separate department to the ENTERTAINMENT SECTION. And it’s not all that entertaining either. We deserve what we have.

How often do any of you write your major broadcasters and demand decent coverage? When was the last time any of you contacted your local television and asked for more?

Fortunately, I don’t get my news from this country. I get it from overseas to know what is going on. Other then a few random sources like the McClatchy newspapers, or pbs, or sometimes the Christian Science Monitor, I get mine from BBC or the scandinavian countries. Not here. Never again here.

  114. upside99 says:

    johnsom Says:
If you morons think I’m going to let you dictate the debate, you are living in a fantasy world.

    HA!

Is there any kind of coherent statement in here?

Most of the rightwinger I know are almost DISDAINFUL of computers and the POWER of INFORMATION that can be accessed.

With all due respect, I started working in the semiconductor industry (you know, that material that is at the heart of the PC) BEFORE the Windows based PC even existed. So, I suspect this right winger might know just a tad bit more about it than most other folks.

In the amoral words of Darth Cheney: SO!!!

You may be in the minority of your 19%er party, but you still are in the EXTREME minority.

    Gotta hurt, doesn’t it?

    Heh heh.

  116. Saint Augustine says:

Johnsom, welcome back idiot. Did yoy enjoy sucking on 6″ worth of republiscum talking points while you were away?

  117. barfly says:

I see the unhinged johnsom has slipped his physical restraints, and gotten access to a computer again. Please re-sedate him, before he hurts himself with the wall socket.

  118. Uosdwis says:

Remember, MSNBC is losing ground due to the fact that Comcast has moved it to pricier tiers in some markets.
