Today, CNN’s Late Edition re-broadcasted an August 22, 1999 interview with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), in which McCain expressed support for overturning Roe v. Wade, while also noting that the action “would condemn young women to dangerous and illegal operations”:
Ultimately, I would like to see the repeal of Roe v. Wade, but to do it immediately, I think, would condemn young women to dangerous and illegal operations.
Watch It:
Throughout the 2000 campaign, McCain hedged on the issue. Just two days earlier, on August 19, 1999, in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, McCain said that he “would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade”:
I’d love to see a point where [Roe v. Wade] is irrelevant, and could be repealed because abortion is no longer necessary. But certainly in the short term, or even in the long term, I would not support repeal of Roe vs. Wade.
Unfortunately, now that he is the presumptive nominee of the Republican party, McCain is no longer concerned for the “young women” who will undergo “dangerous and illegal operations” if Roe v. Wade is repealed. In fact, on his campaign website McCain argues that the decision “must be overturned” to restore “constitutional balance”:
John McCain believes Roe v. Wade is a flawed decision that must be overturned, and as president he will nominate judges who understand that courts should not be in the business of legislating from the bench. Constitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states. The difficult issue of abortion should not be decided by judicial fiat.
While his rhetoric has waffled back and forth, McCain’s voting record throughout his entire public career has been consistently anti-choice. That’s why McCain gets a zero from women.

Why does John McCain hate his own daughters?
June 29th, 2008 at 2:12 pmEveryone has to be held responsible for their actions except johnny. If they get pregnant then they must be held responsible but johnny can waffle if he wants to get the ultra-conservative support…like that will help him.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:15 pmThe turnout from women is going to be pretty low for Mr. McCain. The history speaks for itself, and there’s little Carly Fiorina can do.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:16 pmFred,
Sadly, I think it will help him.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:16 pmHe’s quite the straight talkier. “Straight talk” in Republican means “liar” btw.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:19 pmI don’t see any way they can win without cheating. Even if he woos the extreme right that is only 25% of the entire population.
Most people are looking at the economy right now and his war mongering does not help his case. The religious people are flocking to the democratic party even in the red state I live in. I thought I would never see such a thing but it seems to be happening here.
Religious Americans should be very embarrassed to have hitched their wagon to the death and destruction that the conservatives have brought on us all just because of abortion and gay issues. I think many are overlooking these wedge issues this time, for good reasons.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:28 pmThere is no way McCain can win if the votes are counted. If the votes aren’t counted which they were not in 2000 and 2004 then no amount of strategy or discussion are going to change the end result.
We talk ad nauseum about how the Democrats can’t win the big one when the reality is that they would have won the past two elections if the votes would have been counted.
Steve Heller blew the whistle on Diebold and is now suffering the consequences. He was interviewed last week.
The con is in the complexity. We need to count the votes.

Because they have hated him ever since he divorced his disabled wife and deserted his children to marry his longtime mistress.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:33 pmHere McCain goes again, flip flopping on every issue he talks about. The problem is that McCain doesn’t know what he stands for, and his staff and big business are telling him what to say. The so called “straight talk” is 10 flat tires. Why 10 tires, because that’s how many tires are on this bus.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:33 pmIt’s not McCain’s fault. He can’t remember what he had for breakfast. How is he supposed to remember that he was pro-choice 9 years ago?

I agree with that, Fred. They will have to cheat to win, and they will try their damnedest to do it.
Conservatives may be overlooking the wedge issues for now, but they are certainly not gone. The economy is causing more pain to their families right now, and the idea of “murdered babies” and “teh gay” have gone to the background — except for the 20%ers, of course.
June 29th, 2008 at 2:41 pmConstitutional balance would be restored by the reversal of Roe v. Wade, returning the abortion question to the individual states.
Here boy! Johnny’s got your dinner!
This is dog-whistle rhetoric, intended to cause the Right to salivate over a call for restoration of “states rights.”
June 29th, 2008 at 2:52 pmRE: “…would condemn young women to dangerous and illegal operations.”
If McCain wants to be taken seriously on his stance, then one question to ask is this:
Short of repealing RvW, what has McCain done as Senator since 1999 to ensure that women aren’t subjected to dangerous and illegal operations?
There’ll never be an appeal of RvW, nor will there be a Constitutional amendment to ban flag burning and same-sex marriage; this would take away the three biggest wedge issues that the Repubs trot out every election cycle. Without it, they got nothin’.
June 29th, 2008 at 3:03 pmOoops…repeal, not appeal.
June 29th, 2008 at 3:05 pmJust like on every other issue, McDole is trying to have it both ways.

We know what happens when abortion is illegal, because it is a part of US history. The rich get a friendly family doctor to do it and the poor get a backalley abortion.
Conservative policies increase abortions. Liberal policies reduce abortions. I mean sex education, contraceptives, morning-after pill, etc.
June 29th, 2008 at 3:18 pmYou’ve got to remember Republicans are much more open to strong women, unless it’s a matter of women’s control over their own bodies, sexual harassment, sex education, equal pay, or women dare voice their opinion on matters of public policy.

Agreed had enough #21. The ONLY way to “win” is to have a veritable Tsunami of a lead.
I’m in GA where Cathy Diebold Cox installed Diebold blackboxes 100% throughout every precinct. Anybody wonder why GA keeps showing blood red on the political maps?
In the year 2002 when Cox took away our votes, we had several more than suspicious political upsets. Thom Hartmann wrote a good article [for documentation of facts] back in 2003 — If You Want To Win An Election, Just Control The Voting Machines
However, I strongly disagree with this comment made by Hartmann, “Odds are both won fair and square, the American way, using huge piles of corporate money to carpet-bomb voters with television advertising.”
Of course, Hartmann may disagree with his own assessment back in ‘03. A lot of information has been gathered over the past few years … the dark corners of election manipulation have been illuminated.

June 29th, 2008 at 5:12 pmCertainly the goal should be to PREVENT unwanted pregnancies through education and practical options. Opponents would like to think that all pregnanies are among promiscuous teenagers, when unwanted pregnancies occur in all age groups. Of course, we should encourage abstinence and responsibility; we must provide education and alternatives; but human nature being what it is, we must recognize and accept that — and allow abortions to occur in healthful conditions.
The idea is to limit the number of unwanted pregnancies, not to further punish those who have erred.
Those who think all abortions must be stopped are short-sighted at best, and sadistic at worst, for they also discourage education and alternatives. At the other end, they also begrudge aid and education to the products of those pregnancies — kind of the antithesis of the “righteousness” of their refusal to allow abortions in society.
Whoa! Hey! I’am a guy, and I give him a zero too!

Every now and then, the pro-Obama climate appears to be rather divisive, obnoxious… name calling….and quite frankly this is ruining the mood (among other things such as FISA). It is just a couple of posters, but I could see this turning into a real repuke troll tactic.

June 29th, 2008 at 5:40 pmOh, go ahead, Tanqueray. Tell us about the court ruling in London last year in which the judge found 9 significant errors in the documentary An Inconvenient Truth.
I’ll then proceed to provide a few opinions from the good judge that are in favor of Gore and his documentary, which for some reason fail to be included when the rightwingers point to this case. Like, oh…
Despite finding nine significant errors the judge said many of the claims made by the film were fully backed up by the weight of science. He identified “four main scientific hypotheses, each of which is very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC”.
In particular, he agreed with the main thrust of Mr Gore’s arguments: “That climate change is mainly attributable to man-made emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide (‘greenhouse gases’).”
The other three main points accepted by the judge were that global temperatures are rising and are likely to continue to rise, that climate change will cause serious damage if left unchecked, and that it is entirely possible for governments and individuals to reduce its impacts.
You can Google this if you want the source; it’s from www. business.timesonline.co.uk

spencers mom,
I’d like Chairman McCain to answer why he is not releasing the 750,000 pages of Jack Abramoff’s personal papers to the press. What’s the Straight shooter trying to hide??
Sen McCain:November 17, 2004
“I pledge, as a member of the Committee on Indian Affairs, that we will not stop until the complete truth is told.”
McCain actively controlled the story and he put the investigation into slow motion. He ensured that the Abramoff Scandal was a not a factor in the 2004 election. Then he worked to ensured that voters would not know about how closely Abramoff, Rove and Bush worked together. Then McCain worked to actively limited the damage the Abramoff scandal had on the GOP in the 2006 election. And then he used his access to Jack’s little black book to discourage serious competition and build support for his 2008 run for the White House.

June 29th, 2008 at 10:16 pm#58, 1984 was asking for McCain’s flip-=flops — here are a few:
McCain was against the repeal of Roe v. Wade before he was for it.
McCain was against torture before he was for it.
McCain supported the drilling moratorium; now he’s against it.
* McCain strongly opposes a windfall-tax on oil company profits. Three weeks earlier, he was perfectly comfortable with the idea.
* McCain thought Bush’s warrantless-wiretap program circumvented the law; now he believes the opposite.
* McCain defended “privatizing” Social Security. Now he says he’s against privatization (though he actually still supports it.)
* McCain wanted to change the Republican Party platform to protect abortion rights in cases of rape and incest. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain thought the estate tax was perfectly fair. Now he believes the opposite.
* He opposed indefinite detention of terrorist suspects. When the Supreme Court reached the same conclusion, he called it “one of the worst decisions in the history of this country.”
* McCain said he would “not impose a litmus test on any nominee.” He used to promise the opposite.
* McCain believes the telecoms should be forced to explain their role in the administration’s warrantless surveillance program as a condition for retroactive immunity. He used to believe the opposite.
* McCain supported storing spent nuclear fuel at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported moving “towards normalization of relations” with Cuba. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Hamas. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain believed the U.S. should engage in diplomacy with Syria. Now he believes the opposite.
* He argued the NRA should not have a role in the Republican Party’s policy making. Now he believes the opposite.
* McCain supported his own lobbying-reform legislation from 1997. Now he doesn’t.
* He wanted political support from radical televangelists like John Hagee and Rod Parsley. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain supported the Lieberman/Warner legislation to combat global warming. Now he doesn’t.
* McCain pledged in February 2008 that he would not, under any circumstances, raise taxes. Specifically, McCain was asked if he is a “‘read my lips’ candidate, no new taxes, no matter what?” referring to George H.W. Bush’s 1988 pledge. “No new taxes,” McCain responded. Two weeks later, McCain said, “I’m not making a ‘read my lips’ statement, in that I will not raise taxes.”
* McCain is both for and against a “rogue state rollback” as a focus of his foreign policy vision.
* McCain says he considered and did not consider joining John Kerry’s Democratic ticket in 2004.
* In 1998, he championed raising cigarette taxes to fund programs to cut underage smoking, insisting that it would prevent illnesses and provide resources for public health programs. Now, McCain opposes a $0.61-per-pack tax increase, won’t commit to supporting a regulation bill he’s co-sponsoring, and has hired Philip Morris’ former lobbyist as his senior campaign adviser.
* McCain has changed his economic worldview on multiple occasions.
* McCain has changed his mind about a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq on multiple occasions.
* McCain is both for and against attacking Barack Obama over his former pastor at his former church.
* McCain believes Americans are both better and worse off than they were before Bush took office.
* McCain is both for and against earmarks for Arizona.
* McCain believes his endorsement from radical televangelist John Hagee was both a good and bad idea.
* McCain’s first mortgage plan was premised on the notion that homeowners facing foreclosure shouldn’t be “rewarded” for acting “irresponsibly.” His second mortgage plan took largely the opposite position.
* McCain vowed, if elected, to balance the federal budget by the end of his first term. Soon after, he decided he would no longer even try to reach that goal.
* In February 2008, McCain reversed course on prohibiting waterboarding.
* McCain used to champion the Law of the Sea convention, even volunteering to testify on the treaty’s behalf before a Senate committee. Now he opposes it.
* McCain was a co-sponsor of the DREAM Act, which would grant legal status to illegal immigrants’ kids who graduate from high school. Now he’s against it.
* On immigration policy in general, McCain announced in February 2008 that he would vote against his own legislation.
* In 2006, McCain sponsored legislation to require grassroots lobbying coalitions to reveal their financial donors. In 2007, after receiving “feedback” on the proposal, McCain told far-right activist groups that he opposes his own measure.
* McCain said before the war in Iraq, “We will win this conflict. We will win it easily.” Four years later, McCain said he knew all along that the war in Iraq war was “probably going to be long and hard and tough.”
* McCain said he was the “greatest critic” of Rumsfeld’s failed Iraq policy. In December 2003, McCain praised the same strategy as “a mission accomplished.” In March 2004, he said, “I’m confident we’re on the right course.” In December 2005, he said, “Overall, I think a year from now, we will have made a fair amount of progress if we stay the course.”
* McCain went from saying he would not support repeal of Roe v. Wade to saying the exact opposite.
* McCain went from saying gay marriage should be allowed, to saying gay marriage shouldn’t be allowed.
* McCain criticized TV preacher Jerry Falwell as “an agent of intolerance” in 2002, but then decided to cozy up to the man who said Americans “deserved” the 9/11 attacks.
* McCain used to oppose Bush’s tax cuts for the very wealthy, but he reversed course in February.
* On a related note, he said 2005 that he opposed the tax cuts because they were “too tilted to the wealthy.” By 2007, he denied ever having said this, and insisted he opposed the cuts because of increased government spending.
* In 2000, McCain accused Texas businessmen Sam and Charles Wyly of being corrupt, spending “dirty money” to help finance Bush’s presidential campaign. McCain not only filed a complaint against the Wylys for allegedly violating campaign finance law, he also lashed out at them publicly. In April, McCain reached out to the Wylys for support.
* McCain supported a major campaign-finance reform measure that bore his name. In June 2007, he abandoned his own legislation.
* McCain opposed a holiday to honor Martin Luther King, Jr., before he supported it.
* McCain was against presidential candidates campaigning at Bob Jones University before he was for it.
* McCain was anti-ethanol. Now he’s pro-ethanol.
* McCain was both for and against state promotion of the Confederate flag.
* McCain decided in 2000 that he didn’t want anything to do with former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, believing he “would taint the image of the ‘Straight Talk Express.’” Kissinger is now the Honorary Co-Chair for his presidential campaign in New York.
