Washington Times Calls Out McCain For Lying About Support For 1986 Immigration Legislation

As ThinkProgress noted on Saturday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) made inconsistent immigration pledges in a speech to the National Association of Latino Elected Officials, claiming he would both “secure our borders first” and make comprehensive reform his “top priority”:

[W]e can and will secure our borders first, while respecting the dignity and rights of citizens and legal residents of the United States

– Q: Will comprehensive immigration reform – and not just enforcement – be one of your top policy priorities in your first 100 days in office?
McCAIN: It’ll be my top priority yesterday, today, and tomorrow.

But that wasn’t the only false claim McCain made that day. Yesterday, the Washington Times noted that McCain also claimed he supported the 1986 Immigration Reform Act, legislation long lambasted by conservatives as an “amnesty” bill:

[I]n 1986, we passed a law and said we would secure the borders and gave amnesty to a couple — three million people. I supported that legislation way back then.

Watch it:

In fact, McCain voted against this legislation. As the Times explained, McCain was a vocal opponent of this bill:

The Arizona Republic newspaper in 1986 reported that he had called the bill racist and quoted him as saying the bill’s requirements for employers to verify workers “would institutionalize discrimination.” He said employers would refuse to hire Hispanics to avoid running afoul of the law.

A McCain campaign official said the senator “was referring to his support for a comprehensive solution – going back to that time. He did oppose some provisions and didn’t end up voting for the bill.” As Time Magazine notes today, McCain’s shifting immigration stance, which it calls “confusion,” has been “somewhat intentional on the part of the McCain campaign” in order to woo conservatives and moderates.

No wonder Johnny Boy crashed 5 planes and became an Ace. He has terminal vertigo from all his spinning and flipping.

Must be really hard on the optic nerves and the inner ear to have that kind of constant movement.

  5. RUCerious says:

I’d like to test out a new phrase.

‘The Candidate of the Party of Failure’

    Whaddya think?

  6. RUCerious says:

tricky dicky, where’s the citation on that ridiculous claim?
He spent some of his childhood years in Indonesia, at a PUBLIC SCHOOL, a SECULAR school. And his mom was not religious. So please take a moment and blow it out your ass.

    McCain loses the Moony Times.

    Ouch.

So John McCain is for amnesty after security or possibly right away or maybe at the same time or possibly amnesty without security.

With that kind of rhetoric I’m not sure anyone knows what he is actually going to do.

  11. Zooey says:

    upside99,

McDizzy probably feels like he’s been slapped with a flip flop. :-D

  12. Zooey says:

    FR,

Grampy will add “President” to his resume, and then go take a nap.

  13. upside99 says:

    Zoo,

Can we just tell him he was Prez, give him some monogrammed Depends and let him go back to sleep? Would be much easier on all of us!

  14. Zooey says:

    upside99,

    The idea has merit. ;)

  15. Freedom Rebel says:

Zooey, if we could only get that lucky…

I think he needs to start buying some Ginkgo biloba for all of his memory issues :)

  16. Zooey says:

    Here’s how Republicans think:

My dad is the same age as McDizzy. When he asked me why I didn’t like McCain as a presidential candidate, I told him the truth — he has a position for every mood on every issue, and I have some serious concerns that McCain is having dementia issues.

Next thing I know, dad is getting all hurt and upset because if I think that about McCain, I must think that about every 71 year old man.

    Yeesh…

  17. Freedom Rebel says:

Oh Zooey, you poor thing. You couldn’t win that discussion no matter what.

  18. Zooey says:

I know this is majorly OT (for a change for the drive-by poster I am) but does anyone but me find this article highly ambiguous, hard to follow, and intentionally convoluted? I mean, my gracious. I’m an English teacher, and I got a headache trying to grasp the intent of it.

I will now disappear, to read and ingest, and add only if asked. I shall leave the intelligent comments to the rest of you. Please don’t think I’m a spamming concern troll.

I don’t think there’s enough Gingko biloba in the U.S. for all of his memory issues! ;)

What they didn’t tell you in this article is that he co-sponsored this 1986 Bill with Ted Kennedy. So the even bigger flip-flop is that John McCain Voted Against His Own Immigration Bill. Straight Talk Express – We are all still waiting for that….

  22. Freedom Rebel says:

I couldn’t have said it any better Jane, you are so right.

  23. snicks says:

Sorry, I should have stated my point with the link: I equate this to the media doing a non-reporting (akin to the non-apology) piece. A bit of this and that, containing words and phrases that are meant to baffle and confuse the reader with run-on sentences and ambiguous ideas.

    I digress….

  24. Jane E. Schneider says:

And on that note, I’ll say good night to all!

  25. Freedom Rebel says:

Goodnight Jane, nice to see you :)

  26. Zooey says:

    snicks,

It appears to me that the author of that article didn’t actually have a focus, and decided to “kitchen sink” it.

    Ugh.

    Good evening Snicks ;)

The media has been giving John McCain a free pass through this whole campaign and many people are getting sick of it.

I think they should attack his campaign platform or call it into question. That is nothing compared to the swiftboating lies they pulled on Kerry. They lied about Kerry, this is only questioning McCain’s military experience. That his faulty support of the Iraq war and President Bush gives rise to questioning his ability to lead a nation.

  28. snicks says:

Sad part it, it’s what’s on the front page for Yahoo users. And I believe there are plenty, myself obviously inculded.

Beating the dead horse, MSM stinks. But this article struck me as the horses ass of journalistic merit. Fortunately, I get my news elsewhere.

  29. Zooey says:

    Goodnight, Jane! Take care!

  30. Zooey says:

I don’t think what Gen Clark said was out of line at all. I think it was perfectly sensible — and true. That’s what the quoted former-military guys seemed to be upset about.

It’s a fine line to tread, and I think Clark handled himself well.

  31. Freedom Rebel says:

Snicks they did have better written articles out there. I posted one this morning on the Think Fast Thread this morning on the issue. It looks like as Zooey said it was thrown together.

  32. snicks says:

So, did the “swiftboating” term come from the Kerry debacle? Hadn’t heard of it before then.

I babysit for a friend, who is hard-core republican. (And I am in my 30’s…teaching requires external money endeavours. I’m not a child, for the record.) I think she is an original republican…she’s alright with gay marriage. Her gay neighbors babysat her kid before me, but he’s HIV + so, I’m taking the reins.

    I have some hope.

  33. Freedom Rebel says:

I agree Zooey, I think he gave a perfectly accurate statement and he shouldn’t feel any obligation to take it back.

John McCain; re-defining reality one flip-flop at a time! Vote for McInsane; Delusions you Can believe in!
One ray of hope; when the Washington Times finally calls McLooneyTunes out on a Real Issue, there may Just be some hope for the MSM. Please note thought, I did say May!
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  45. biashawk says:

Ok, this seems very biased. For one, give solid proof before making a claim. For instance, McCain was against the 1986 legislation? Ok then, show me the documents or videos that undeniably say so. Next, to #17. Zooey, I think your dad was trying to tell you that you insulted the way he thinks. Back to the political issue at hand, though. McCain is old, gotcha on that. But if you observe him in “action” and then take a look at someone who’s been diagnosed with dementia by a TRAINED psychologist, you will find many differences. Q.E.D. McCain is not suffering dementia. Finally, to those who think illegal immigrants are not a big deal: THEY ARE STEALING YOUR JOBS. That’s right, I’ll say it again: THEY ARE STEALING YOUR JOBS. Just like the Irish immigrants of New York way back when immigration was our largest source of population, they are coming into the country and taking jobs for significantly lower wages than indigenous Americans can or will take. They are not bound or protected by US laws, so they can do this without issue. That’s what the problem is, that’s why it’s such an issue. And I said it without attacking anyone or mudslinging.
    Reasonably yours,
    Biashawk

How in the world can the Republican Party get saddled with a nutcase whack-job who knows nothing about economics, is so anti-capitalist he uses “profit” as a term of derision, has never run a business or had any job outside of government, will raise taxes, is so stupid that he believes “stopping global warming” is worth destroying the American economy, won’t drill ANWR to alleviate our energy deficit, won’t appoint strict constructionist justices, won’t protect marriage, would throttle free speech given another opportunity, hasn’t protected the borders in his 26 years in Congress, will give amnesty, citizenship, and a ‘key’ to our country to 20 million illegal aliens (god’s special children in his twisted mind), is beloved by the New York Times in addition to other liberal media, and lives in a delusionary world of suppressed rage and self-appointed war hero vanity?
