Southern Baptist scholar says spousal abuse stems from wife’s refusal to submit to husband.

Bruce Ware — a Southern Baptist scholar – argued that one reason that men abuse their wives is because women rebel against their husband’s God-given authority:

And husbands on their parts, because they’re sinners, now respond to that threat to their authority either by being abusive, which is of course one of the ways men can respond when their authority is challenged - -or, more commonly, to become passive, acquiescent, and simply not asserting the leadership they ought to as men in their homes and in churches,” Ware said from the pulpit of Denton Bible Church in Denton, Texas.

Good one, this phrase is next to oxymoron in the dictionary.

  14. MapleStreet Says:

I'd really like to hear the full quote on this one - beyond the linked to web page. Is he arguing that because the husbands are sinners that they can't help themselves ? Or is he arguing shared responsibility ?

Is he offering an examination of the situation (that because of sin we have spousal abuse, not to mention a lot of other problems) or is he trying to excuse it ? In the former he's not exactly offering groudbreaking scholarly theology. In the latter he's misusing a wide range of tenets.

Of course when I was in front of the judge in traffic court, I should have argued - Judge, the other driver subverted my authority by switching into my lane without signaling. Because I'm a sinner, it was natural that I pulled out my pistol and blew him away.

  29. eve Says:

While I totally disagree with this guy's gender theology, he was pointing out that abuse is a sin. If you read the article, he spoke of the horror and ugliness of abuse and oppression.

I have never been fond of ultra conservative religion (actually not fond of plain old conservative religion, either) and I do shudder at extreme beliefs. I agree with others here that the "it's the wife's fault" bit is ridiculous. For one thing it says men are not responsible for their own behavior as if they are less than human.

    This quote bothered me more:

"It means that a woman will demonstrate that she is in fact a Christian, that she has submitted to God's ways by affirming and embracing her God-designed identity as--for the most part, generally this is true--as wife and mother, rather than chafing against it, rather than bucking against it, rather than wanting to be a man, wanting to be in a man's position, wanting to teach and exercise authority over men," Ware said. "Rather than wanting that, she accepts and embraces who she is as woman, because she knows God and she knows his ways are right and good, so she is marked as a Christian by her submission to God and in that her acceptance of God's design for her as a woman."

But don't blame the Southern Baptists alone for this thinking. This thinking has been taught by several religions for thousands of years.

In an abusive relationship. the abuse isn't governed by the actions of the victim. It's purely a function of how the abuser feels. That's because it's, at the core, an expression of power.

Religion is based on fear, and, by definition, is terrorism.

Threaten me with eternal torture by fire and I'll just laugh at you though, the same way I laugh at people who claim purple dragons fly around and grant wishes (an equally plausible story).

    Excellent post.

We non-religious folks are told that we have to be tolerant of other people's religious views. These kinds of incidents show why being tolerant of intolerance is NOT a liberal or progressive trait.

Being tolerant of abusicve behavior because it's done in teh name of some religion is absurd.

I will not be tolerant of an ideology that espouses the right to beat me (or any other woman) if we do not kowtow to some nonsense inside some out-dated book written by ignorant men with very small winkies (sorry - the anatomically correct word gets caught in the spam filter).

If there were a god who gave men authority over women that would be an unjust or petty god...an oxymoron some might even say. I think what really happened is that men invented a god to bolster their own drive to seek power over others and to justify their brutality. (whether it be from flawed development or an over production of testosterone I couldn't say)

Witch1 Says: Monday morning madness after the sunday communion drunk out…Seem’s these relegious nut’s are looking for attention any way they can get it, most often using fear….Relegion, big business and tax free….I’m convinced these people are wired wrong….

I've been reading a lot of evolution books in the past year, and one interesting thing I learned about why religion perpetuates itself in our cultures, despite technological advances that should have killed it by now is the fact that children, by nature, believe anything they are told by an adult.

Because they need to quickly learn life saving things that they cannot learn on their rown and survive, they are wired to believe everything they are told.

Despite the fact that my youngest brother is an Atheist, and his ex is not religious, my neice, because her maternal grandmother told her to believe, does. No questions asked. No thinking or evaluating involved.

As long as someone tells children that this crap is true, religion will continue to perpetuate despite all the facts and evidence to the contrary... And, it will most likely be the down fall of man, as the advances in technology are put into the hands of people who think they are divinely inspired...

I spoke to my Baptist republiscum friend this morning and inquired about what he and his wife had learned at the "special class" they attended at their church Saturday and Sunday nights. He said he had learned about how "most of the wars ever started in the world have been started by Islamic men between the ages of 16 and 25". He added that what he learned reinforced his belief that the US should turn the sands in the middle east into glass.

Ah, so much for love thy neighbor, turn the other cheek and do unto others.

It made me think about how Ray Kroc, the man who bought McDonals from the brothers that started the hamburger chain, used to rent a plane and fly around looking for church steeples, and then endeavored to located his restaurants closeby. His aim was to build in areas where people congregate regularly.

My thought today is that, someday in the future, those same steeples may be used as bombing targets.

  83. Oro Lee Says:

I am a life long Texan. One of my great garandfathers was a captain in Sam Houston's Army of the Republic. I am a life-long Southern Baptist. My granfather was an itenerant evangelist. I belong to the moderate/traditional camp of the SBC.

First, a little about Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Al Mohler is the President, an extreme neo-calvinist and the doctrinal architect/sergeant-at-arms of the SBC conservative resurgence. He once opined that pre-marital sex, which obviously results in all sorts of societal ills, is the fault of women for putting off marriage to pursue a career. With Ware, the fruit has not fallen far from the tree.

Under Mohler, SBTS has dismissed women professors for being women. Since the adoption of the latest Baptist Faith and Message, the SBC theologic position with respect to women and wives is, at best, suspect. I believe it to be un-Christian.

Second, what I believe is the more traditional (although rarely fully practiced)teaching about the relationship of husbands of wives, found mostly in the 5th chapter of Ephesians. In 5:22, Paul instructs wives to submit or be subject to their husbands. In 5:33 Paul urges wives to respect their husbands. Most conservatives focus on 5:22 and ignore 5:33. In between, Paul instructs husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the church.

Love is no silly, sappy emotion. It is an act of the will to meet another's needs. See ch. 13 of 1 Corinthians for the hallmarks of such sacrificial love. And how did Christ love the church -- he gave his life for her..

What does it mean for a husband to give his life for his wife. It means babysitting on Friday night instead of going out with the boys; it means remodeling the bathroom instead of buying the new bass boat; it means she gets the new car before he gets the new truck; it means he does whatever it takes to provide her the security and opportunities she needs to be all that God desires her to be. He gives himself, every bit -- the same as Jesus gave himself.

And she is to love him, and what does he need from her? Guys are so simple -- all we need is to be appreciated and respected. And what woman would withhold such basic needs for a husband who would move heaven and hell for her?

How many husbands do you really know like this? It ain't easy. It ain't for wussies.

Third, I am not trying to convince anyone of the existence of God or the correct interpretation or application of Biblical teachings and I feel no compulsion to defend myself or this message. I attack no one, just caricatures -- on both sides of this issue.

  89. Pete Tagliani Says:

The man makes the last decision, Daryl?

"Sorry, honey. The bible says I win the arguement."

One would think that a strong decisive man wouldn't need biblical reassurance of his authority. But it's not about validating the man's authority as much as it is declaring the woman's subservience.

It's amazing how people can use the bible as a justification to rebel against man's God-given goodness. There is so much in the bible one can draw on to make them a better person. It is disheartening when people use the bible as a validation for their baser instincts.

For example, when you said, "I do not agree with spousal abuse, but women need to obey their husbands, per biblical standards", I found that quite chilling.

Ever notice how all of the major religions at their fundamental cores require women to submit to men?

It was only a matter of time before Daryll instructed us on the true authoritarian nature of Christofundamentalism. He's been absent in the forums lately. Must be busy dominating his family.
All you outspoken women out there- shut up. If you have an opinion, clear it with your husband first. If he says no, no more discussion. End of story. Over and out. Be like Laura Bush. Her husband is always right about everything.
    Papa ist alles.
Submit to your husbands. No matter what idiots they may be, they are the supreme authorities over you. Jesus (or one of his disciples, many years later) sez so. It's right there in that collection of books that gets re-translated every 100 years or so. Maybe Daryll is one of those fundies who say the King James Bible is the only legitimate translation of the original Aramaic, Greek or Latin texts.
If your lord and master of the household tells you not to drive anymore because he wants you to stay put, OBEY him without question. Just like the Saudi women must do. You may not like his decision but he rules you.
If you get raped, it must be something you did to ask for it. Maybe your clothes aren't modest enough. Consider wearing black from head to toe with a little slit to look through.

And what the heck is the White Throne of Judgement? Oh, it's from the weirdest hallucination in the collection - Revelation, the only book that really matters to the End-Timers. Written 90+ years after the birth of Christ with no quotes from him, subject to all sorts of interpretation, almost left out of the collection, and disputed by the founder of Protestantism Martin Luther. And believed verbatim by fundamentalists. Right down to the 7 candlestands.
Oh, Lord, if you exist beyond the minds of men, please rapture these men NOW.
God, save us from your cheerleaders.

  122. Oro Lee Says:

"Sorry Oro Lee, men don’t “babysit” their own children. As to the rest of your post, that man doesn’t exist."

I stand corrected, Zooey. Thank you.

Since the ideal husband does not exist, there is always room for improvement. In the meantime, a couple learns to get along together.

For example, my wife makes the small decisons, like where the kids go to school and whether we should buy a new house. I make the major decisions, like whether we should pull out of the U.N or bomb Iran.

There was a bakery at the corner of the block where an elderly couple lived. When the old man visited the store, he brought home cinnamon rolls. The old woman always returned with scones. One morning, their granddaughter visited, having first stopped at the bakery. She placed a cinnamon roll before her grandfather and a scone before her grandmother. The old couple exchanged their pastries.

But my point is that I don't relish the thought of anyone burning in hell.
I don't hate Daryll. He's just wrong, and hopefully capable of learning. I'm often wrong, but I don't use God to justify my ignorance.

When people believe themselves to be closer to God than others, it leads them to regarding others as lesser beings worthy of eternal punishment.

It's not a very good way to live your life, which is probably why Pride was listed as one of the Deadly Sins.

Daryll says: "[...] but women need to obey their husbands, per biblical standards."

OK, let's stick to the "biblical standard"

Let's say you're right and The Bible is the infallable word of God. It is the document from which you the husband claim to be head of the family.

Exodus 21:7 -- Calls for the husband to sell his daughters into slavery. Your father-in-law is a phucking sinner for failing to sell your wife into slavery or you bought and married a slave!!! A violation of Fed Law!!

Lev. 19:19 -- Forbids your wife from wearing clothes made of two different type threads. So she must be stoned for wearing cotton/polyester blends. You hate your own God if you don't punish her for each violation!!!!

    Wow you are stupid!!!

  142. dixie blood Says:

    BTW Daryll,

Why would anyone want to go to the heaven you're headed to? I mean really...I wouldn't want to spend eternity with any of the Christian a$$holes I know or any of their preachers... Spend eternity with Jerry Falwell, Dobson, Jim Bakker, Tammy Faye Bakker, Jimmy (Whore Hopping) Swaggert and the rest of these scum? Not hardly....

That would actually be the pure definition of hell.
