... a president who still gets his way.”

The president does still get his way, in Congress with the new FISA bills supporting his illegal spying, blank checks for Iraq, etc.

About the only people who still support President Bush are Democrats in Congress.

When he travels around the country, Bush feels less “antipathy” than he used to in the crowds, along the motorcade routes, and expressed by the individuals who talk to him at his events. “He feels there has been a shift in attitudes out there that’s not reflected in polling data” ...
Nixon used to refer to the "great silent majority" that (supposedly) was quietly supportive of his misdeeds in Vietnam, Cambodia and elsewhere. This inspired a bumpersnicker:
The majority isn't silent --
the government is deaf!"

When the Soviet Union ceased to exist, the United States became the only national superpower on earth.
George Herbert Walker Bush understood what that meant. So did Bill Clinton.
Careful coalition politics combined with judicious use of force could lead to a new and better world, and a world of unprecedented American influence and leadership.
For a while, it really looked like it might happen.
Then a bunch of American imperialists, showed up, slavering for a REAL American Empire, based on militarry power, economic clout, and the patented ignorant arrogance for which the term 'jingo' was coined.

And what Bush and Cheney have done is sink the prospects for the next half-century, if not permanently.
They pushed us from the champion of civil liberties to the advocate oftorture, pre-emptive war, and a full sledged Secret Police complete with tropical Lubyanka.
They turned us from an overwhelming military force to an overextended cracking military failure that Osama bin Laden can taunt publicly.
They turned an economic dynamo into a country whose middle class can't afford to get sick, drive their cars, or own their own homes.
They turned a country pre-eminent in science into a yahoo-ocracy where ignorant TV duckspeakers call the world scientific community Nazis, where uneducated party political officers rewrite eminent scientists' papers and keep them from making public statements, and where other eminent scientists are denied visas because the hold opinions contrary to the regime.
Even if we have a string of brilliant--Democratic--presidents, the Bush-Cheney junta have destroyed what cannot be rebuilt--trust.
Add to that the fact that they've thrown away all our cards--military, civil libertarian, economic, technological--leaving us able to compete how?

We could have really done something interesting--but thanks to these stupid, greedy, arrogant, pseudoaristocratic thugs, we may have turned the corner to, in fifty years, being a charming tourist destination, with wonderful natural monuments, a plethora of charming churches, and a smiling, open population that makes you feel right at home.
And they happily take euros!

This clown has a big problem in the waving department. He waves at every cockroach that walks by. What's his problem? And no one waves back, even the cockroaches.

Yes, Mr. President, there is a shift in attitude. Instead of wasting time and money on a trial, Americans now believe that we should go straight to the rope and oak tree.

I've got to give him that if antipathy changes to hatred, there is indeed less antipathy.

While, as a gut instinct I don't believe this to be the case, it could be that those who had antipathy have stopped showing up for his events.

OTOH - don't flame me. I admit that I'm giving him credit for being observant - a non-starter as far as I'm concerned.

If Bush bombs Iran (whether preemptively or after war-hawks in Israel launch an attack) then his approval rating will no doubt go down below zero, especially if Iran retaliates and there is a terrorist attack (large or small) inside the United States.

People will realize that no bombing would have meant no terrorist attack.

Bush and Cheney will both be impeached, and charged with war crimes.

And yet, I would much prefer that Bush and Cheney don't bomb Iran, but instead give diplomacy a chance, like that given to North Korea and Libya.

Of course, the wild card is still Israeli war hawks.

And yet, I would much prefer that Bush and Cheney don’t bomb Iran, but instead give diplomacy a chance, like that given to North Korea and Libya.

Bush, with his hands cupped firmly over his ears while shouting "LA LA LA" at the top of his lungs, says he never hears ANY complaints about his miserably failed presidency.

Is any one surprised?

Chimpy's arrogance doesn't alter reality. He's still the WORST PRESIDENT EVER, even if he doesn't have the guts to admit it.

It is tough when you're despised by 95% of the people on the planet. So whatever metal defect Nixon had afflicts our little chimpanzee.
Because I hate this prick so much, a bonus is that his extended family is in agony over the shame he has brought to the bush name. Nice.

When he travels around the country, Bush feels less “antipathy” than he used to in the crowds, along the motorcade routes, and expressed by the individuals who talk to him at his events.

Well see, that's the problem right there. Get out of the car and see how well you're liked.
