Torture Advocate John Yoo Lied To Congress To Cast Aspersions On Philippe Sands’ Credibility

Last week, while testifying before Congress, torture fanatic John Yoo sought to discredit torture critic Philippe Sands by suggesting Sands had lied about interviewing him. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) used the allegation to claim it “would perhaps reflect on the veracity” of all of Sands’ allegations:

YOO: I did read Mr. Sands’ testimony before this committee, and I noticed in the testimony he said that he had interviewed me for the book. And I can say that he did not interview me for the book. … So I didn’t quite understand why he would tell the committee that he had actually interviewed me.

KING: And with that answer, Professor Yoo then, I’m going to interpret that to mean that at least with regard to that statement that he had interviewed you, you find that to be a false statement, and that would perhaps reflect on the veracity of the balance of the book.

Watch it:

Yet, as MoJo blog points out, Sands never said he had interviewed Yoo for his book. Rather, Sands said, “[o]ver hundreds of hours I conversed or debated with many of those most deeply involved. They included…the Deputy Assistant Attorney General at DoJ (Mr Yoo).” Indeed, Yoo and Sands had debated torture at the World Affairs Council in 2005.

There is No bottom to this, nor will the Democrats seek to find one. When will the MSM, or Congressional Democrats finally Stand Up and say Enough Is Enough! Why does enabler after enabler tell some part of this Insane story and the Administration stays in power??? Come on January 19th!!! OR:
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!!!!

  3. Bob says:

    1) Yoo is a lying sadist/masocist. Why should anyone belive anything he says?
    2) King didn’t need Yoo’s statement to not believe anything written in the book, he jumped to that conclusion all by himself. In fact, King didn’t even need to read it to not believe anything in it.

I trust the good people of California are pleased that their tax money is paying this scumbag to teach their citizens the Rule of Law at Cal/Berkley.

Yoo has no integrity or ethics — that makes it easy to lie about ANYTHING.

  11. Frankly_my_dear says:

Yoo isn’t lying. He just has reading comprehension difficulties. But we already knew this from his interpretation of the Constitution.

  12. Leftside Annie says:

Well, hey, for someone who actively works to find ways to justify torture, lies are small potatoes.

  13. StratRat says:

It is a crime to lie to congress – even if you did not swear an oath, it is still a criminal offense. I am wondering if the spineless Dems have any pride and bring Yoo back to explain his BS. If the Dems leave this alone, they deserve whatever befalls them in November. They are assisting in the destruction of our country – and all for a couple of dollars and a couple of votes. What about the oath of office they all took? Doesn’t that count?

  14. Bob says:

I caught the middle of one of the George Carlin Specials that was on last weekend. He was talking about the corrupt, criminal republicans and how 200+ had been indited or convicted. He was talking about their hypocracy and constant false claim to the moral high ground. It fit so well with current events, and yet it turned out to be from the late ’80s. Some things never chage, do they?

  15. SpoxLogic says:

If they can go after Roger Clemens for lying, then they can go after this guy. Or is steroids in baseball more important than what these yahoos have done to this country.

    …oh wait! Don’t answer that.

  16. leftcoast says:

The Congressional record of this hearing must be amended to reflect the inflammatory remarks by Sen. King as he played off of Yoo’s remarks. And Yoo must be charged with lying to congress.

  17. rozerze says:

Yoo could’ve said he walked on the moon, I gurantee it wouldn’t have mattered at the dems faux hearing.

Right on Rog2, lying, to a Republican, is just like breathing and taking a sh!t; just part of life’s basic functions!

Then we must change the Dems sitting in those seats. If the Dems are not really Dems (DINOS), then vote them out and bring in the right group of loyal and progressive congresscritters.

This is way easy; if we have the balls to do it. Loayalty to your local rep doesn’t cut it anymore. He/she must display with absolute clarity what they stand for and what they will do. If they don’t do as they say, recall them or vote them out. Very easy.

The American public needs to be the winning team in all these areas. Not the career minded congresscritters. We need to take the power back.

  20. Freedom Rebel says:

As the old saying goes: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Well we have many in Congress doing a whole lot of Nothing to make sure Yoo, Addington, Feith, Bush & Cheney are prosecuted.

  23. Freedom Rebel says:

Why hasn’t Yoo been disbarred yet and what is delaying the proceedings? He should never be allowed to practice law ever again.

That is absolutely correct. In some cases we need to find much better democrats or independents in certain areas of the country. I hope Cindy gives Pelosi a run for her money. I have already sent her money twice. There are grass-roots organizations that are going after Hoyer and several others soon in newspaper ads. (Full page)

I bet most of the Republicans up for re-election will have a very hard time in their districts which will help also. We have turned many traditionally red districts to blue this year. I don’t think that tread is going to stop anytime soon.

have a good day stratrat :)

You do realize that Yoo authored those ‘get out of jail free’ memos for Cheney and Bush, right? He sidestepped his duty as a lawyer and ended up as Bush’s lapdog attorney. He should be dis-barred, not employed.

Agreed. The days are gone when we could just select the candidates with the ‘D’ next to their names. We must understand their past and ask them to talk about their future before making a decision or casting a vote. Our country is at stake, and it appears some folks seem to be aware of that. The wrong set of politicians can absolutely ruin a country, right George W. Bush?

    Cheers to you.

I bet their keggers are pretty boring.

Now, if we can ask them to keep their heads bowed until the water fills the pool, we might be ok. Remember: They were born Rapture Ready! Bring it on, God! Valhalla………..

George & Cheney are protecting him along with Addington. These two sycophants have done everything they have been told to do. We can only hope they will be the first two to go to prison. While being informants to help serve up George and Cheney on a platter. I know it’s my wishful thinking coming out again.

Because almost all of them (both R and D) were accomplices at the start of the debacle, and now they’re all too ashamed to admit it and, don’t want to rock the boat to not cause a massive downfall at all levels in the government. As cold as it sounds.
