Sands responds to Yoo’s inaccurate claim that he lied to Congress.

In his congressional testimony last week, former Justice Department official and torture architect John Yoo sought to discredit torture critic Philippe Sands by suggesting that Sands had lied to a House subcommittee about interviewing him. In fact, Sands never made any such claim. Today, MoJo blog reports that Sands has written a letter to Yoo in an “attempt to clear the air”:

I have always been careful to be as accurate as I can, and I do not believe that I indicated to the Sub-Committee that I had interviewed you for the book. … It does not indicate that I interviewed you for the book, and there is no other point in my testimony in which I so indicated. [...]

I hope you will forgive me for having troubled you with this point. I would not have done so but for the fact that Representative King appears to have concluded that I made “a false statement” to the Committee, and your exchange with him has caused me to receive a number of enquiries by email, raising issues of integrity or veracity.

Sands asks Yoo to “clear up the misperception” with Rep. Steven King (R-IA), who said that Sands’s allegedly false statement cast doubt on the claims in his book.

Good luck with that. That is the way the right works. Smear and leave.

Yep. Then they let the trolls carry their water for a few days.

Typical disinformation campaign. Distort what was said in order to attack the veracity of your enemy. Refuse to ever admit the mistake and continue to propagate the false smear. This is how it will go:

    1. I never lied about interviewing Yoo. I never said that I had interviewed him although we had debated extensively on the underlying issues in a public forum.

    2. So you admit that you never interviewed Yoo?

    3. Of course. But I never said that I had interviewed him.

    4. PROOF AGAIN OF THE LIBERAL SLANDER MACHINE. HE ADMITS THAT HE NEVER INTERVIEWED YOO. THE SLIMY LIAR.

  4. Buckie Boy says:

And anyone would believe Yoo because……?

Fcuk Yoo – Just another Bush WAR CRIMINAL.

  5. leftzone says:

Be nice to “clear the air”, unfortunatly, we will have to wait until January 09…

  6. Bob says:

These people only respond to violence. He should have put it this way:
I hope you will forgive me for troubling you with this point, but my friend, Mr. Baseball Bat, is encouraging me to respond in a different way. Please correct this before my friend introduces himself to your kneecaps.

  7. Bob says:

Seems like the Congressional record could easily be verified and would show that Yoo mislead the Committee. Not that that means anything since Yoo isn’t an athlete.

  8. paleolib says:

Being a complete word parsing chickensh*t Yoo will respond by debating the definition of the words “interview”, “false”, “statement” and “book”. Rep. King will move on to another moronic rant and further embarrass the entire state of Iowa.

Hmm, when have Republicans ever stopped lying in the 21st century? I really wouldn’t hold my breath on that one, if I were you…

Q: What is worse than one Republican?
    A: Two Republicans.

sands needs to call king’s bluff. demand he provide the passages/transcripts of sands’ ‘lie’.

  11. LoraS says:

Sands treated Yoo with more courtesy than the creepy torture-bug deserves. But then Sands apparently is a man with class–something most Repugnacants so sorrily lack.

  12. OneCitizen says:

I’m curious. Exactly what must Professor Yoo have to do to be in violation of UC’s Standards of Ethical Conduct?

Get caught actually crushing some kid’s testicles himself?

  13. moondancer says:

Yoo’s testimony was hardly the “work product” of a law professor. It was more like a pre-law punk that watched too much TV. He should be dismissed from the faculty of Berkeley. And like so many of the nitwit bushies, he’s not half as smart as he thinks he is.

  14. dixie blood says:

John Yoo is a co(ksu(king liar..It’s that simple!!!

  15. dixie blood says:

John “Useless” Yoo is also a WAR CRIMINAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. dporter says:

Why is Sands being such a pussy about asking for Yoo to clear things up?

Who says “I hope you will forgive me for having troubled you with this point.”

Sands should tell that bastard that if he ever impugns his integrity again, he’ll find Yoo and shove his book up his ass. Autographed, of course.

i had almost forgotten that — Sands is british, isn’t he? i can just picture him dictating: “I hope you will forgive me for troubling you with this point…”

and no, even if the UC regents caught Yoo crushing a boy’s testicles himself, according to their position i don’t think he’d be in violation. i don’t think i’m the only who would advocate a review of their rules.

  18. stjack says:

“dreadfully sorry, but i just couldn’t help but notice that you had suggested rather strongly that I had, shall we say, misspoken in my testimony before your Congress…”

  19. curious says:

John Yoo, who was one of those responsible for the torture memos is now teaching at UC Berkeley. Teaching law of all things.

This shows you how far the liberal bastion of Berkeley has fallen. That they would hire such a man to teach in this school. This man knows nothing of the law that he has not subverted. As for ethics. What a joke. He should be removed from UC. And for him to try and crawl out from under his immoral and illegal activities by dissing Sand should come as a surprise to no one.

Yoo is a war criminal. I only wish that he among so many others in this administration were jailed. The names read like a roster of war criminals. The shame is at UC. What kind of students can they produce, being taught by such a man? And what kind of university would hire this man? One that is morally bankrupt.

  20. Max-1 says:

    @19 curious… am I?

Why slander the term “LIBERAL” through an direct and pointed association with the Fascist Yoo and the gang he ‘hangs’ with?
… Like “LIBERAL BASTIONS” have resorted to regularly courting Fascist ideologies…? Pppfffttt!!!

What exactly is gained by your ‘liberal’ use of the English language? LOL

Liberalism has NOT fallen, merely it is taking a break while the Loyal Christians(R) crucify themselves on their own deeds. Its a shame that they take so long at this, as other people are dying… waiting.
    … NO?

    .

  21. Max-1 says:

    .

    Dear Honorable John Conyers,
    Who lied…?
