In a recent American Spectator article, former Reagan White House political director and QubeTV founder Jeffery Lord gives his vision of what “America would look like in an age of Obama.” According to Lord, “The word is fascism“:
What freedoms will next be targeted with that deadliest trademark of an Obamalander — moral superiority? What do we have when the sole purpose of the government as run by the chilling principles of Obamaland is to “use the political process” to remove freedoms large and small one by one by one?
Someone needs to speak it plainly.
The word is fascism.
Lord isn’t the first conservative to make such wild claims. Last month, former Newt Gingrich aide Tony Blankley wrote in the Washington Times that Obama might be a “dictator” in waiting. (HT: Andrew Sullivan)

The word is fascism.
. . . and I have a word for Lord –> asshat
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:34 pmCan you say desperation? Are these people serious? Bush’s administration is almost the textbook definition of fascism.
I think the right side is going get really ugly during this GE. I hope America is ready for it.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:37 pmThat’s laughable–who has been trumpeting “moral superiority” for the last THIRTY YEARS? The GOP, you jackass!
By the way, Lord, check the dictionary for “fascism:” 1. the merging of corporate interests with the political establishment. 2. The George W. Bush administration.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:38 pmwe already have a dictator.
george w. bush.
torture.

July 2nd, 2008 at 6:39 pmI find the projection done by people like this truly fascinating. We’ve had our civil rights and freedoms slowly, numbingly curtailed for the last 7 1/2 years. Now someone who just might really reverse that trend comes along and he’s Anti-Freedom man. He’s a Communist! He’s a Stalinist! He’s a Marxist, and now, latest and greatest, he’s Fascist Man! The mental hoops these maniacs jump through are amazing!
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:39 pmImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution! Then Elect Obama and drive the Lord Nuts!
Fascism? Well, excuse me. We have been misruled by the Bush fascist regime for the last seven and a half years. Torture, endless lies, spying on all Americans, stolen elections with Republican corporations “counting the votes,” wars of fascist imperial aggression (note: the Taliban was initially created, armed and funded by the CIA under Republican President Ronald Reagan in the early 1980s), corruption, cronyism, attempted destruction of our Bill of Rights and our Constitution. That is fascism. President Obama will put an end to Bush fascism, hopefully…
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:41 pmHow can Obama lead to fascism when we are already there?
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:41 pmAt the risk of repeating my previous post:
Repuglycan campaign tactic:
Throw smelly shit at wall.
Examine what sticks.
Lick up remainder off of floor.
Repeat, don’t rinse.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:43 pmAre we seeing the last throes of the Repug party in early July?
This will take all the fun out of it!
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:44 pmI’d be interested to know just specifically what fascist policy or law it is that he fears so. And why it is that supposed Americans fear the American Constitution so.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:44 pmHe’d have to win for that to happen, but he’s already abandoned his base.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmNeocons use the word “fascism” in an attempt to insulate themselves from the same charge. They dumb-down the concept so that it means only ‘bad’ thereby preventing any substantive evaluation of what ‘fascism’ really is. This is really the only way they can effectively avoid the acusation themselves - by attempting to make the word meaningless. This is more than just projection; it is their only real defense.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:46 pmrozerze Says:
He’d have to win for that to happen, but he’s already abandoned his base.

Again.
Peter C, you nailed it. And the tactic you describe has been useful for the Right for decades. When you’ve got nothing to offer the vast majority of voters, your only hope of electoral success is subterfuge, disinformation and projection.
July 2nd, 2008 at 6:50 pmOh, and Jeffie…?
You’re an idiot.

No one would believe the tired, “communist” slur, so trying to conflate Obama with fascism is all they have left. That it makes no sense is beside the point, when playing to the “P” nut gallery.

July 2nd, 2008 at 7:17 pmFascism was introduced to the USA with the Bush\Cheney crime family and it included a march to war draped in a flag, carrying a cross, introducing torture, and tax cuts for the ultra wealthy military industrial complex and oil company executives. We are in the grasp of fascism. These guys are doing what they do best, they make up sh!t. July 2nd, 2008 at 7:20 pmNow I’m confused.
When the chimp administration did away with Habeas Corpus, the Washington Times applauded. They cheered when the Repugs in Congress gutted the 4th Amendment. Since when does the Washington Times give a damn about our freedoms?
Oh, and I don’t think “fascism” is the word Jeffery Lord was looking for. Why? Because fascism is exactly what we’ve had to endure during the reign of der ChimpenFührer.
So now authoritarian-cult worshipers like Lord are worried about fascism?? Sorry, but they’re about 7 and half years too late. Truth be told, we were all looking forward to an Obama administration in the hopes that he would END fascism in America.
At least until the next Repug administration is installed.

July 2nd, 2008 at 7:28 pmHe actually has a real fear, in that The Bush-Cheney junta has created a monstrous secretive governmental monster, secretive, arbitrary, with vast power and vaster claims to power, all justified and locked up tight.
And if Barack Obama steps into the Oval Office, declares that a couple thousand neoconservatives are giving aid and comfort to the terrorists, secretly arrest them and send them to Syria–who could stop him? They themselves demolished all the protections–and when it happens to them, it’s fascism.
(Mind you, I don’t really trust Barack Obama enough to give him the One Ring, either. Checks and balances–and the Bill of Rights–must be restored.)

The thing it doesn’t understand is that people on the left can disagree with their leaders but that doesn’t mean that they will abandon them. I’m not real happy with Obama right now but that certainly doesn’t mean that I won’t vote for him. He is still light years better than McBush.

But more people blame the obstructionist Repugs for that and that is why the current seat trend is:
Senate Dem 55 Repug 45 Congress Dem 239 Repug 196
So when Obama gets in, the Dems will have a comfortable majority in both Houses too.
But, don’t worry, you will be taken good care of, too. OK?
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:49 pm#rozerze Says:
but yes, the dem-controlled congress is looking pretty bad.
So. The Republicans are just as disgusted with their own in Congress as the Democrats are. The Democrats are mad at Congress because they have been spineless idiots who have caved to the most unpopular president ever. The Left will do something to correct that problem by actively working to get rid of the spineless Dems and replacing them with Dems who do have spines. Once the Democrats control Congress and have a filibuster proof majority, they will get to work and our opinion of Congress will go up.
Besides, idiot troll, what does our opinion of Congress have to do with the presidential race. Apparently you haven’t been looking and seen that your Republicans running for Congress are in as big trouble as McBush is.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:52 pmupside99 Says:
Senate Dem 55 Repug 45 Congress Dem 239 Repug 196
And that’s just today. The trend for the Democrats is going up and they have a shot at taking 60 seats in the Senate. I’m hoping that happens because the next Congress is going to have a lot of work to do to right the wrongs that the Bush Crime Family has inflicted on this country.
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:54 pmRog2, gonna answer my questions in #50?
Here’s mine: Obama will have over 310 electoral votes and the Dems will get 55 seats (I don’t count JoeL in that) and the Congress will have 237 Dem seats.
Let’s pony up here, OK?
July 2nd, 2008 at 7:57 pm#upside99 Says:

That’s of course assuming he agrees to debates. The reason why McSame proposed the 10 town hall meetings and is hammering on them is because he’s going to use Obama’s not going along with them as his excuse for not participating in any debates. McSame desperately is trying to control the message. But, once Obama starts hammering him on why he won’t debate, McSame is going to look real stupid.

July 2nd, 2008 at 9:19 pmObama would lead to ‘fascism’ in America.
I think the position of Fascist in Chief has already been taken, and has been for the past 7 years.

Yes, that position is already taken, Mr. Lord.

The word is idiot. Bush’s right wing, unitary executive powers are far closer to fascism than anything we’ve experienced in this country so far, including McCarthyism.
http://progressiveworldreview.com
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:45 pmOK, I just got done reading Jeffrey Lord’s pile of bullcrap, and my mind is still boggling.
Apparently, Obama’s greatest sins are that he became a community organizer instead of an entrepreneur, he believes the global warming evidence, and a couple of his staff members asked a couple of women wearing hijabs to move out of camera view at a rally (for which Obama apologized). Oh, and he signed, ALONG WITH 40 OTHER SENATORS, a letter condemning Rush Limbaugh’s speaking of “phony soldiers”.
From the community organizer thing, Lord manages to spin this into “Obama is going to take away free markets.”
From Obama’s position on global warming (a position shared by a great many people, including the vast majority of climatologists and other scientists), Lord manages to twist this into “Obama is taking away your SUV, jacking up your gas prices, and dictating what temperature you can set your thermostat.”
From the women in hijabs thing, Lord seems to be convinced that Obama wants to ban hijabs. Obama not only doesn’t want to ban hijabs, he didn’t even want to ban these women from standing behind him. Of course this doesn’t stop Lord from going down a long list of things Obama wants to “ban” — smoking, guns, and heaven knows what else. All with probably as much or less evidence than the hijab incident.
And finally, a letter to Rush Limbaugh protesting his calling our troops “phony soldiers” signed by 41 senators has morphed into “Obama wants to kick Limbaugh off the air.” Of course, this WOULD make the airwaves a lot saner, but Obama never said, nor intended, any such thing.
Pure projection. And chutzpah. But this is hardly a masterpiece of journalism to be savored by the masses. It’s a hit piece in a wingnut site intended to be pap for the sock puppets.
July 2nd, 2008 at 10:58 pmGee,I always thought liberalism is the antithesis of fascism.
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:07 pmBut if the repugs say otherwise, it must be true.
If you read the bestseller, “The End of America” by Naomi Wolf, you would see that it is the Bush administration that is following a clearly defined path toward fascism.
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:35 pmThere is some kind of reverse psychology tactic by the repugs here - they accuse Obama of something that they themselves are guilty of - as if that is somehow going to inoculate them.
Lord forgot to take his Haldol.

Obama’s rightwing critics better hope for their sake that he’s not as cunning, deceitful and manipulative as they’ve been claiming, especially since he’ll inherit all those unchecked, imperial powers idiot traitors like Lord’s cheered for when they’re used by Bush Jr.
And I’ve been saying the same thing as pbg since the FISA outrage about two weeks ago.

pbg Says:
I agree with that last point, although I will add that if the Bushtards don’t help roll back these powers, NOW, so W can’t use them anymore, then they have no logical right to whine or complain when it’s their turn under the terrorist/warrantless spying microscope.

Stay out of touch, and this is what you get!!!
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:14 pm“Projection” is not an ugly-enough sounding word for how reprehensible it is. It’s wose than hypocrisy, worse than bearig false witness because it’s both.
July 3rd, 2008 at 12:41 pmThis seem to be a typical conservative tactic: take your own biggest weakness - in this case, a long history of corporate fascism - and pretend that it’s your enemies biggest weakness.
It requires an impressive amount of doublethink to pull off, because their audience of Nascar knuckle-draggers need to be outraged that Obama is a fascist while at the same time not understanding what fascism actually IS.
July 3rd, 2008 at 3:34 pm1) The left has been consistent in calling the reich wing fascist and that’s quite correct.
2) The reich wing has called the left Nazis, Communists, Fascists, etc. They don’t know SH!T about the differences and will try to make any label stick that they can.
