When President Bush announced his economic stimulus in January, he bragged that his package was the “right size” and would “boost” the economy:
I am pleased that this agreement meets the criterion that I set forth last week to provide an effective, robust, and temporary set of incentives that will boost our economy and encourage job creation. This package has the right set of policies and is the right size. The incentives in this package will lead to higher consumer spending and increased business investment this year.
It sure has led to “higher consumer spending,” but not where Bush had probably hoped. The adult pornography industry reports that has seen a huge uptick in business thanks to Bush’s package. According to a press release from the Adult Internet Market Research Company:
An independent market-research firm, AIMRCo (Adult Internet Market Research Company), has discovered that many websites focused on adult or erotic material have experienced an upswing in sales in the recent weeks since checks have appeared in millions of Americans’ mailboxes across the country.
According to Kirk Mishkin, Head Research Consultant for AIMRCo, “Many of the sites we surveyed have reported 20-30% growth in membership rates since mid-May when the checks were first sent out, and typically the summer is a slow period for this market.”
Jillian Fox of LSGmodels.com (nsfw) said that in a survey to its members, “thirty two percent of respondents referenced the recent stimulus package as part of their decision to either become a new member, or renew an existing membership.”
The Bush administration has attempted to wage an aggressive fight in the War on Porn. In fact, cracking down on “manufacturers and purveyors” of pornography was “one of the top priorities” of Alberto Gonzales while he was Attorney General, often coming before terrorism prosecutions.
Ironically, the porn industry is now thanking Bush for his policies. “Getting more people to buy porn was probably the last thing Bush had on his mind when he came up with his ’stimulus package,’ but we’ll take it,” said Fox.

Too bad this wouldn’t work for GDumbya. Where he’s concerned, nothing less than a one-trillion-dollar avoidable little dirty war is necessary to “stimulate” his minuscule package. You could call it his “Napoleon complex”.

July 2nd, 2008 at 11:33 amOne possible explanation for so much stimulus money going for porn is that internet porn is one of the few industries not affected by higher gasoline prices. Therefore, its patrons get more bang for their buck.

July 2nd, 2008 at 11:47 ammissmolly. funny, and true. There are going to be a lot of losers in the high gas price economy, but some winners, too. Maybe if we could predict the winners, we could make some money.
July 2nd, 2008 at 11:49 amLet’s explain sex to the troll.
You see, DNA evolved, thorugh natural selection, adapted vehicles for its survival. This wasn’t a conscious creation, but simply the product of millions of years of momentum.
The special vehicles that DNA created to insure its survival are bodies. This includes human bodies. Yep, our sole purpose and reason for existing is to procreate and keep our DNA alive.
So, as a result, evolution developed sexual urges that make beings want to have sex so that we will procreate and our DNA will live on, long after we’ve died and become worm food.

The answer is treating women as equals to men with Equal Rights Laws (like all other Industrialized Nations have, except us), and an equal rights mindset. As a result, the women in the industry will be those who really want to be there (which I imagine will be fewer than there are now).

I’m not comparing and contrasting - I’m lumping all monotheistic organized religions in together, as all of them are damaging to women’s rights. But if we are to compare, then you have to look at the full spectrum. There are Christians in America that are worse on women’s issues than Muslims in the Middle East. I had friends in California who were from Iraq and they were treated better there than many women are in Southern Baptist communities in the South.
Countries that treat women as equals to me do better than those that do not - but a lot. Compare Norway to The Sudan, for example.

Unfortunately, as long as the misogynistic Middle Eastern religions dominate our culture, women will continue to be second-class citizens.
If the religion you are referring to is Islam, which is actually a Western religion, then you couldn’t be more wrong. Islam gave rights to women back in the 7th century that they did not have even in “civilized” Europe. The killing of female children was expressly forbidden. Women gained the right to an inheritance, which was something that did not come until hundreds of years later to Europe. They also had the right to agree to be married and to ask for a divorce. They were not considered to be property.
The reason Muslim women cover themselves up is to prevent themselves from being being treated as sex objects, so horny people like you would stop wetting your pants over them. Men also have parts of their body that are required to be covered and are told to lower their gaze in the presence of women. This is ordered of them before women are told to cover to preserve their modesty and dignity.
Perhaps if you stopped defending the misogynistic cultural practices that condone and encourage your little 7 year old daughters to dress like hoochies, and teenager girls to display their thongs out of their low rise tight jeans, maybe the degradation of women would not be so rampant.

The root of the problem (IMO) is the religion.
Are the women really free to leave the compound? Are the veiled Muslim women really free to discard the burkas? I don’t know.
But, the rights of the women and the children (any individual, for that matter) should supersede the religious doctrine.

Unfortunately, as long as the misogynistic Middle Eastern religions dominate our culture, women will continue to be second-class citizens.
____________________________________________________
I assume that when you are speaking of “Middle Eastern religions”, you are speaking of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam — all of which originated in what we now consider the Middle East.
Interestingly enough, both Jesus Christ and Muhammed bestowed rights upon women that they previously did not have in the cultures they lived in. Both Jesus and Muhammed insisted that God’s salvation was for women as well as men, both regarded women as people (not property), and both insisted that women be treated with respect. And both would be appalled to see women treated purely as sex objects.
So why do we perceive these religions today as being unfair to women? Cultural traditions warped in the name of religion, mostly. People will bend religion to their own agendas of power in ways that would horrify the original prophets. Muhammed never had the Taliban in mind. Jesus never had some of the crackpots calling themselves Christians in mind.
In most places of the world, there is a lot of work to be done before women are truly elevated out of the “second-class citizen” hole. But I’m not going to blame the founders of Abrahamic religions for the problem, nor the religions themselves. I WILL blame those who exploit religion for their own nefarious ends — and I recognize that may be what you meant.

In fact, I am with you in that I am against all of these so-called Islamic governments that are really not Islamic at all! They just force things on people with their own screwed up interpretations. If you remember, I said a few days ago in another thread that “marriage” should be banned and we should take religion out of all things government and politics!

July 2nd, 2008 at 12:47 pmMost Muslim women gladly wear the burkas and veil as religious practice, but I don’t believe that it is the option that you think it is. There are many examples of intolerance (not just for women, but homosexuals and those of other religious beliefs) from many Islamic fundamentalists. Those forms of intolerance (beatings, murders, honor killings, etc) are much more troubling (and more institutionalized) than the troublesome intolerance we find in the west.

Please don’t go away. I was not offended by anything you said. It looked like you had a reaction to an issue that was personal to you, and that happens to all of us. Lord knows my knees have jerked quite a few times on these threads when they probably shouldn’t have.
Because you have knowledge of Islam (especially what it’s supposed to be, not how the media paint it), I value your perspective and hope you continue sharing it with us.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:52 pmMost Muslim women gladly wear the burkas and veil as religious practice, but I don’t believe that it is the option that you think it is.
Yea, they dress like that here too cause they might get killed.
Being delusional is a form of psychosis.

What, religion and sex don’t go together? :-D
Well, I’ve tried. But the response from my wife is always the same: “Not while we’re at church!”
All kidding aside, I too agree that your posts are insightful and intelligent. No need to disappear. I enjoy learning from what you have to offer.
July 2nd, 2008 at 12:59 pmCashed beat and spent stimulus checks. Wow, sure turned the economy around. Yeah right! Porn alone doesn’t cut it anymore for sex addicts. They have to have some speed on the side and cialis or viagra to jack all night long. People were aching to stimulate themselves with those stimulus checks obviously! Porn is a drug like any other. It alienates the indivudual and wipes out any chance of meeting someone and having meaningful relationship. The root of all addictions is sex addiction. Any effort made by this administration for some reason ALWAYS BACKFIRES! I wonder why? Ever since Bush took over in 2000 I knew this country was headed straight to hell.

I have this thing about reading my newspaper a certain way. Is my addiction sex related or just OCD? Than again is the OCD sex related?

Really? So I can blame my beer consumption on sex? Heck, I always thought you could blame the sex on too much beer consumption. Especially during college.
“It alienates the individual and wipes out any chance of meeting someone and having meaningful relationships.”
July 2nd, 2008 at 2:18 pmWhat if a “meaningful” relationship with your significant other includes porn as a mutually agreed upon form of foreplay? Like Cinemax or HBO after dark?
I’ve gotta admit, in retrospect I can easily see that someone getting a wad of unexpected cash would blow it on entertainment. - although I didn’t see this coming.
I more predicted that the cash would be spent at Walmart where it be in a conduit to China. Not to mention that a dollar spent with a local merchant, in general, tends to stay in the local economy longer (that is, circulated more times so that one dollar can have 5 or 10 dollars of effect) than a dollar spent in any chain - which travels to corporate offices and doesn’t stay in the local economy.

Interesting take on how Islam is becoming more tolerant through criticism of it’s more fundamentalist elements.

July 3rd, 2008 at 9:14 amSince Bush can’t win the war on terror and Reagan couldn’t win the war on drugs, he established the war on porn to save his legacy and now look, it’s failed once again.
