Five years ago today, Bush told Iraq: ‘Bring ‘em on.’

Editor and Publisher notes that today is the five year anniversary of ‘bring ‘em on,’ the infamous statement President Bush made during the early stages of the Iraq war. Bush made the remark after being asked about increasing violence in Iraq:

Q: [W]ith the attacks on U.S. forces and the casualty rates rising, what is the administration doing to get larger powers, like France and Germany and Russia, to join the American occupation there? [...]

BUSH: Let me finish. There are some who feel like — that the conditions are such that they can attack us there. My answer is, bring ‘em on. We’ve got the force necessary to deal with the security situation.

Watch it:

E&P adds that on the day of the “bring ‘em on” comment, Travis J. Bradachnall, a corporal in the Marines, was killed in an explosion during a mine clearing operation near the city of Karbala. Since the remark, over 3,900 American troops have been killed in Iraq. Bush has since said he regrets the “tough talk.” (HT: Atrios)

What are the trolls gonna say about this, I wonder?

  2. larkohio says:

He should regret this darn war he started based on lies. We are spending so much on this war that we are neglecting to take care of the many problems in our own country. We have service people dead and maimed. Those are the things he should regret, but he doesn’t.

Gee. Who would have imagined that the patriotic citizens of Iraq would accept that challenge? sarc/off

  10. Uncle Ho says:

Only a damn fool or a complete idiot would make such a statement like that.

Bush has proven himself to be both an idiot and a fool.

  11. Buckie Boy says:

…and they did just that…how’s the tough TALK working for you Bush, you WAR CRIMINAL.

Sounds like Bush wants to be the first president to score a hat-trick of failed war efforts. How can one puny, little many invade two countries and lose both; while waiting for the opportunity to attack a third? None of these countries has attacked us or was ever a threat to us.

  13. And Yet... says:

Bush has since said he regrets the “tough talk.”

And families of those killed & wounded regret he isn’t in Iraq putting his life on the line for those words the same way their loved ones had to.

  14. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Since the remark, over 3,900 American troops have been killed in Iraq. Bush has since said he regrets the “tough talk.”

And every single one of those deaths are blood on his hands. This man is completely without heart and soul as evidenced by the fact that he can sleep at night.

This is a man who gave up golf in support of our troops. His personal sacrifice should be enough to forgive him for whatever mistakes he may have made.

  16. RUCerious says:

Slightly off topic, but americablog has an article about Senator Thad Cochran witnessing McIIIrd assaulting a guy during discussions while on his ‘diplomatic’ tour…
Read all about it! Candidate for President loses his temper again, assaults man!

    RUC
That took place years ago, but it does shed some light on the temperament of the repugnican candidate.

BTW, the news is full of the story of a release of a political prisoner in Colombia (held since 2003) and released today, coinciding with the visit of John McSame.

  21. RUCerious says:

Thanks for the update Marie. The AB article didn’t mention dates, he still scares the crap out of me as POTUS with the nuke codes.

Chimpy made the same mistake as every would-be conqueror in history. He looked at the small military force and said, “we can top that”. He was right. Mideastern countries generally have small armies because the are not, by nature, nationalistic. Their first loyalties are to clan and tribe. Those loyalties may prevent them from joining a standing army.

However, when a foreign power invades? All bets are off. Even while they settle grudges and establish alliances, amongst themselves, they are uniting against us. Testing us. Learning all our methods.

Whoever emerges from the civil strife on top will be far more powerful than al-Maliki. And it’s virtually certain that whoever it is will kick us out post-haste. And they’ll have the fanatic loyalty of 99% of Iraqi fighting men to make it happen.

I would guess that our “commanders on the ground” would get very nervous if the civil strife reduced dramatically. Because we know that once they are done fighting each other? It’s our turn. And it could make every defeat in American military history pale in comparison.

Bushco has provided the tastiest bait in modern history. 150,000 troops, plus at least that many mercs and civilians, pinned down in hostile territory. What’s worse is that our “strategy” has left us in a position to have ALL supply lines cut. 500 really committed guys with shoulder launched missiles (probably Made in U.S.A.) could cut off every last one of them. Then the butchering would begin.

That’s what military historians, even amateurs, fear. That the Iraqis will stop fighting each other before we have secured a withdrawal. If that happens it could be the worst defeat since Stalingrad. And you can damn well bet that every poor slob from Blackwater, not to mention GI, will be praying for the protection of the Geneva Conventions. And their captors will reply, “So”?

Someday after Boosh exits the White House, I hope he has the balls to saunter into a local bar somewhere in a small Texas town.

It’s still hard to believe that an American president would talk trash to the enemy. Then again we’re not talking about an normal American president.

This seems like a good thread for this link. It’s a speech and a brief reading by the author of “Bush on the couch”. Followed by a short Q&A. It’s an hour long, but, if you haven’t read the book, it’s an hour well spent.

And don’t forget, the famous statement was made in the context of us already finding out that the invasion wasn’t gonna be a cakewalk. So yet another lie to propogate the war.

  28. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

And five years later, he’s still an idiot.

  29. Bozo The Neoclown says:

“Bush has since said he regrets the “tough talk.” As do most pu**ies after they get their a*ses handed to them in a fight

For the only time in my life I can honestly say I really HATE this “man.”

  31. pete says:

I passed that threshold long ago Helen. There are men who have perpetrated more evil, but, the crimes committed in our names have made Buscho the first, and hopefully only, people I hate from afar. And I’ve only met two I hate face to face in over 40 years.

I can forgive crimes of passion, rage, or misplaced Faith. But the sheer contempt and defiance displayed by these criminals demands justice. Though at this point I would be overjoyed if they just leave peacefully in Jan. 09.

    smirk…………

notice the smirk expression on GW’s face when he says “bring ‘em on”.

the man was, and remains clueless as to what his misguided actions have brought upon our great country and those that so bravely serve and pay the ultimate sacrifice.

George W. will indeed be remembered as the president that recklessly squandered our nations good name by needlessly invading/occupying of another country in his nieve attempt of sowing democracy and to “get even” with Saddam Hussein at any cost……

    George WORST president ever………………………..
