McCain fundraiser linked to Colombian terrorist group.

One of John McCain’s biggest fundraisers “oversaw the payment of roughly $1.7 million to a Colombian paramilitary group that is today designated a terrorist organization by the United States.” HuffPost reports that Carl Lindner, the former CEO of Chiquita Brands, “paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (known by the Spanish acronym AUC),” which is described by George Washington University’s National Security Archive as an ‘illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country’s most notorious civilian massacres.’”

This was “protection” money I believe.

  2. stewarjt says:

They’re only terrorists if they’re Muslim or leftists. If the goal is profit, even terrorism is acceptable. Please see the Contras for more evidence.

  3. citizen_pain says:

And you won’t hear a peep about this from the “liberal” media.

Back when the press wasn’t owned by corporations that function as the GOP propoganda wing, journalists and news orginizations would have pounced on this, McCain would have been shamed and mocked.

Nowadays, the leading fund raiser for a presidential candidate that funded terrorist death squads wont even bother to explain or step down, nor will he be asked to.

I hope you right wing nutjobs are proud of what your party has done to this country.

He is following in the footsteps of Ronnie Ray-gunz, gotta keep those terrorists in power, to fuel the mighty industrial complex of the good ol’ GOP!

I quit eating Chiquita bananas a LONG time ago!

Should we really play this game?.

The Obama campaign quietly removed from its official website a page managed by a fundraiser tied to the Islamic terrorist group Hamas.

The page for Hatem El-Hady – former chairman of an Islamic charity closed by the U.S. government for terrorist fundraising – listed Barack Obama’s wife, Michelle, as one of three “friends”…

…Hady was head of the Toledo, Ohio-based Kindhearts for Charitable Human Development, a spinoff of the Holy Land Foundation, the Dallas-area group indicted by the Justice Department for terrorist financing.

  6. CitiDC says:

I thought that DHS Secretary Chertoff implicitly approved the payoffs to the terrorist groups by Chiquita.

Exactly what Chertoff told the Chiquita executives became a hot-button issue in the case. The Justice Department admitted in the plea deal that Chertoff said the payments were illegal and “the issue of continued payments was complicated.” According to Holder, Chertoff told the Chiquita officials that “this is a heavier meeting than I expected,” and that he would get back to them. Olson and Hills believed, according to attorneys close to the case, that there was an “unspoken but clear understanding” with Chertoff that they could temporarily continue the payments while Chertoff considered the options. Chertoff declined to comment for this story.

Holder told the sentencing court that he suspects the government did not want to explicitly say to stop the payments “and then have blood on its hands if someone was, in fact, killed.” So Justice took what Holder called a middle position-acknowledging that the payments were illegal, but not explicitly saying “stop.”

Holder was clearly outraged by the department’s waffling. He said in court that if Chiquita’s disclosure had occurred under his watch as deputy attorney general, and if his Justice Department staff had failed to act on it, “heads would have rolled.”

But Chertoff failed to act. Records show that Olson and Hills reported back to Chiquita’s board of directors that there would be “no liability for past conduct,” but there was “no conclusion on continuing the payments.” They said Chertoff would get back to them. But he never did.

Again, it doesn’t count if you don’t cite a reputable source that relies on proof.

rogerette needs to learn to read the links before trying to play her own game:

While Lindner was CEO of Chiquita, the company began sending money to the AUC through its shipping subsidiary Banadex. A report by the Organization of American States states that Banadex also engaged in arms trafficking, helping to deliver 3,000 Nicaraguan AK-47 rifles and millions of rounds of ammunition to the AUC in 2001. According to federal prosecutors, when company officials realized the arrangement was illegal, they switched to making the payments in cash.

    IOKIYAR right traitor?

First of all, I’m not sure if your trying to imply huffpo is actually a reputable source, but what exactly is in doubt?, obama took the page down in responce to the thing.

At least a Dem can admit a mistake and move on.

Not so with Repukes. They prefer to lie till they die.

Hey Rog2, could you find a source any far to the wacky-right than WorldNetDaily? They make Redstate and newsmax look like left-wing sites.

BTW, have you bought any of those cute “Up Your Arsenal” t-shirts with the terrorist AK-47 from their ad?

  13. paleolib says:

Lindner is an excellent poster codger for the Republicans. In addition to paying off terrorists he lost control of Chiquita after running the company into bankruptcy. Lack of moral compass + lack of business judgment + rampant cronyism = Bush donor.

yup, and huffpo makes all other blogs look like fox…your not even denying the info is still accurate, but I will use a better source when tp does.

‘illegal right-wing anti-guerrilla group tied to many of the country’s most notorious civilian massacres.’

Is Erik Prince in charge of these guys too?

  16. drmjg says:

    Interesting pattern:

Campaign leaders who have lobbied for dictators. Campaign leaders who have continued to work as lobbiests after joining the campaign and then having to deal with McCain’s claim of no K Street leader on his staff. A fundraiser who has paid hush and protection money to terrorist groups (as designated by our OWN government).

New question for the Straight Talker™:

Given the war on terror: if you knew that a company doing business in the US were openly giving money to a group the US government describes as terrorist, how would you expectw we would deal with that company and its management?

The birds are chirping outside as we await a Straight Talk™ answer

  19. Freedom Rebel says:

    Carl Lindner

What he gave: Amount raised for Bush 2004: At least $200,000
Amount contributed to Bush-Cheney inauguration: $200,000 ($100,000 from Lindner; $100,000 from American Financial Group)
Soft money contributions, 1999-2002: $2,777,000 ($2,030,000 to Republicans; $747,000 to Democrats).
    TOTAL: $3,277,000

What he got: The World Trade Organization forced European Union nations to open their markets to Chiquita bananas, while Lindner gave substantial financial support to the Democratic Party under former President Bill Clinton and to President George W. Bush. The move by the WTO accelerated a trade dispute between the EU and the United States that, in 2003, threatened to add more than $6 billion in tariffs on U.S. products, including $2.2 billion in tariffs on products manufactured in political battleground states.

    COST TO THE PUBLIC:
At least $191 million in higher prices on goods imported from Europe; heightened economic troubles for U.S. industries that consume domestic steel; potential future damage to the economies of African and Caribbean banana-producing nations.

I would say he got his money’s worth. Everything goes to the highest bidder. Absolutely sickening…..:(

  20. pete says:

Do you mean the Dr. Hatem El-Hady who sent 5.1 million dollars worth of food, clothing and medical supplies to the newly elected government of Palatine? The one who was shocked and outraged that his charity was labeled a “terrorist front”? The one who had all personal charges dropped? The one who is suing the U.S. government for the frozen assets of his charity?

It’s too bad that they had to drop his page, but, prudent. They can’t take the risk that enough people will spend 1 minute “Googling” to find the whole story.

Thanx for the topic roz. Now we know.

    Poster codger is damned funny!

  22. MapleStreet says:

As it is impossible to do business in all countries while universally following US laws and customs, I am somewhat inclined not to emphasize the payoffs.

However, I most definitely do emphasize that the McChurian candidate’s staff seems to be a who’s who of power, corruption, lobbyists, etc.

  23. Marie says:

And McCain is there now showing his support.

  24. Marie says:

McCain’s campaign is in disarray – they know they have a loser in McCain – no matter how many shills they put in front of a camera to lie in his stead – no matter how many handlers they have at the ready to rescue him from stepping on himself with stupid, contradictory remarks – no matter how much they will use lies and smears to attck Obama, his wife, his supporters. They know they have a loser in John McSame.
Desperate animals get more vicious — but they know they are trapped.
BTW, did McCain ever release his medical records? Weren’t they promised months ago?

  25. Scottsdalian says:

If I recall correctly, Carl Lindner is the brother in law of Charles Keating.

    Yes…THAT Charles Keating!

  26. jps says:
