Conservative columnist Tony Blankley questions the patriotism of environmentalists.»

blankleyweb2.jpgIn honor of the upcoming Fourth of July holiday, this morning on her radio show, Diane Rehm hosted a segment on patriotism in America and asked her guests to give their personal meaning of the term. Author and journalist Haynes Johnson stated, “I don’t like people who beat their chests and say they’re more patriotic than their fellow Americans.” But conservative columnist Tony Blankley disagreed, saying one person can be “more patriotic” than another and even suggested that environmentalists are not patriotic:

BLANKLEY: I would take it [to] another area where I think patriotism is slipping…people who have views on the environment may feel that they’re more loyal[] to the environmental principle than they do to American advancement. We see this very specifically on the question of the Kyoto treaty.

Listen here:

Transcript:

HAYNES JOHNSON: I don’t like people who beat their chests and say they’re more patriotic than their fellow Americans.

REHM: And Tony Blankley, what about you?

BLANKLEY: I’d like to put forward a proposition for this discussion. I’ve thought about this over time. I think patriotism is a form of love – love of country. And like other loves, they can be more intense, they can be faithful, they can be intermittent, they can be weak.

By the way which means that the opposite of patriotism isn’t necessarily treason; it may simply mean indifference or divided sentiments. And I think in that way, there can be a person who is more patriotic and it doesn’t mean the person who is less patriotic is a traitor.

One evidence — and I think Obama and Wes Clark got tangled in it this week. One evidence, not the exclusive one of one’s love of country is one’s willingness to put one’s life on the line. Its not the sole test, there are other ways of doing it but a person who volunteers to do that we presume has a deep love, just as you would defend your wife or children because you love them against all dangers or risks. […]

BLANKLEY: I agree with Haynes, I would take it [to] another area where I think patriotism is slipping is that people, some Americans, are developing loyalties to things — not — other than the country’s. Take the international businessman a major corporate leader of a multi-national corporation. The people who work there. They tend to think of their interests in the company across borders not like their grandfather similarly situation or their grandmother’s thinking of them as an American corporation.

Similarly, people who have views on the environment may feel that they’re more loyalty to the environmental principle than they do to American advancement. We see this very specifically on the question of the Kyoto treaty where people who believe in environmentalism to that degree say we should give up our economic expansion while other parts of the world don’t have to for the general good interests of the world.

  1. Uncle Ho Says:

And I question the patriotism of conservatives.

Is their loyalty to the Constitution and the rule of law?
Or do they prefer the fuhrerprincip?

  2. StratRat Says:

It’s just like Nazi germany in 1935. All who question the strategy of the good and serious thinkers must be dealt with harshly and swiftly. Demonizing those whose outlooks differ from the villiagers must be punished.

This is happening right here, right now. Why else would someone like Blankley say anything about those who wish this world lasted more than a few more decades. This is the only planet we have. It is the only planet we will ever have. Why would those who wish to keep our home clean and livable, be on the recieving end of this tripe? The should be lauded, not made fun of. What is Blankey doing to keep the planet habitable for humans? No much, I guess.

  3. paleolib Says:

Methinks the gentleman (term applied loosely) knows not the difference between “patriotism” and “jingoism”. Perhaps the problem with the wingers derives from their lack of access to a good dictionary.

  4. Dave C Says:

What he’s saying is that it’s more important to be patriotic to your country then your planet. That’s nuts. That’s also not patriotism, it’s nationalism. Repubs can’t make that distinction.

  5. LibertyLover Says:

And I continually question the environmentalism of conservatives…

one would think that conservatives would like to be good stewards of the earth instead of the destroyers and polluters of the earth.

And who said that the “last refuge of a scoundrel is patriotism”? Just a thought.

  6. bigtime patriot Says:

Hmm, last I checked, America was “inside the environment”. If the environment goes to hell, everything inside it (including America) goes to hell.

Sounds like Mr. Blankely thinks its okay if America goes to hell.

What was he saying about patriotism again?

  7. StratRat Says:

    jabberjaw Says:

Its partriotic to recognize that people have a First Amendment right to disagree on issues involving the environment. It’s unpatriotic to suggest that those who disagree with you on environmental issues must themselves be unpatriotic.

Blankley said so. He ‘questioned’ the patriotism of environmentalists who would put the environment ahead of ‘American advancement’ - whatever that means.

No sane person would speak of saving the planet vs. patiotism. They are not inclusive topics, and they have little, if any, connection to one another.

But then, we all know why Blankley said what he said.

  8. republicans hate facts Says:

Meanwhile in the real world, the majority of Americans question the sanity of conservatives…

  9. republicans hate facts Says:

    John Kerry Says:
Here’s the latest from your boy! Seems like Obama Carter may be coming around to the right!! Gee, what a surprise!!

If it was NO SURPRISE, why do you equate him with Carter? ROTFL, you’re a DUMB GIT!

Never mind that if the environment goes, America goes along with it.

In a sense he’s right though. If your definition of patriotism is nothing more than the group think, herd mentality that prevails in this country then some truly are more “patriotic” than others. It’s just not something to brag about.

  11. Bob Says:

I think he’s confusing patriotism with fascism. He’s also assuming that economic expansion and environmental conscientiousness are mutually exclusive, which is not the case.

  12. And the beat goes on Says:

My country, right or wrong? Or is it, my crooked, unethical mass-murdering administration right or wrong? When will these wingnuts realize that it is loyalty to the principles our founders established when our country was established is what drives us “unpatriotic” progressives and environmentalists?

It is loyalty to the values our great nation that drives my patriotism. It is respect for the rule of law and the freedoms of everyone –even those who disagree– that makes me proud to be an American.

We need to protect ourselves, our country and our environment from trhose who might trash it all for their personal gain. It is the very least that our global brothers and sisters expect of us as citizens of this great nation and it is what drives my passion to restore us to the leadership role we should be taking very seriously.

  13. robbez_92107 Says:

    John Kerry Says:

I know. How bad of a candidate does Grampy McSame have to be that he can’t be leading? It really does look like Obama Carter is the lesser of two evils, doesn’t it?

    Poor, senile old Grampy.

  14. StratRat Says:

Why would our troll John Kerry post off topic comments. Can it not read the topic of the post, or maybe it thinks we care what its positions are on off topic posts?

Also why would our troll use the name a well respected American? Would a name such as McLimbaugh be a better name for our troll? Or how about banning our troll for off topic posts altogether? That seesm the proper thing to do.

  15. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Tony Blankely is what happens when conservatives think they can offer reasoned arguments for their conservative principles, but then their conservative principles take precedence over the reason and logic needed to construct those arguments.

  16. jb Says:

The GOP War on the Environment needs to draped in the flag. Greed above all. That’s the Republican way.

  17. Bob Says:

Well, the conservatives of the 1770s were the ones against independence from Britain. Conservatism is unpatriotic.

    Happy Independence Day!

  18. LiberalVoter Says:

I have to wonder if Blankley is taking this stance because he is worried about not being able to gouge more money out of his investments that destroy the environment? Not only that, it is an old, tired rant by conservatives to blame environmentalists. Are the right wingers that desperate that they need to ‘recycle’ (sorry for the play on words :-) this old crap?

  19. jb Says:

The GOP will eat a turd if its wrapped in a flag….just look at the old geezer they are foisting off as a legitimate candidate for POTUS.

Not to mention the assklown they have had in the past 7 1/2 years!

  21. ralph the wonder llama Says:

When did Obama ever make a “firm promise to withdraw combat forces from Iraq immediately”?

Troll John Kerry has abandoned his usual slapstick and is instead trying to be rogerse’s latest incarnation.

Don’t do it, Troll JK. We love you just as you are.

  25. barfly Says:

Gee, what a surprise!! What a f’in joke this boy is!!! HA!!!!

And the racism is never far from the surface…

  26. TheToonGuy Says:

So I’m guessing that the other residents of the community that Tony lives in don’t care if he hangs his laundry on the balcony or keeps a rusted out fridge on his front porch. After all, Blankley’s personal advancement must be more important than the environment he lives in.

    /sarc off.

  27. the brown acid Says:

Anyhow, in my original post I stated:

God forbid the corporations in this country innovate. I think it must have been in the 1980’s that everyone decided advertising trumps innovation. There’s a lot of money to be made in saving the environment - seems even the staunchest conservative would realize this. America used to be the innovators. The inventors. The go-to guys for the solutions. WTF happened to us? Something tells me the green solutions are going to come from somewhere else, much to the detriment of our nation. I weep for our republic.

  28. Buckie Boy Says:

So, let me get this creeps thinking straight….

If you want our country and the world to not end in destruction…then you are unpatriotic?

If you want your children and grandchildren to not starve to death from global warming…then you are unpatriotic?

If you want corporation to make mass profits and pollute the crap out of the planet…then you are a loyal American?

It’s no wonder I don’t understand this kind of mind set, makes no sense what so ever.

  29. misshusseinmolly Says:

OK, the world really has turned Orwellian. First we had the a**clown who claimed Obama was a fascist, and now we have a guy who suggests that environmentalists aren’t patriots.

    War is peace.
    Propaganda is truth.
    Torture is love.

Expect this insane list to get longer.

  30. barfly Says:

For one thing, patriotism also involves a care for the land. The founding fathers viewed themselves as stewards of America’s bounty, and wanted to preserve it for future generations - not gouge out every last ore pocket, or harvest every last timber stand.

  31. blue state bob Says:

This is the same fat cow who was replaced by Monica Crowley on the McLaughlin Group. When you lose out to Monica Crowley for a job, you might as well just jump in front of a train.

When you lose out to Monica Crowley for a job, you might as well just jump in front of a train.

    You’ve got it all wrong.

Rev. Moon needed a really strong editorial hand at the Times - to pop the stubborn back-zits he sometimes develops after a very rich meal.

  33. VerbalKint Says:

I question Tony Blankley’s patriotism. In fact, I’m pretty sure that he is deeply unpatriotic.

  34. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

“Patriotism” is a lot like “parenthood”. If I love my country and my children, I will sacrifice, be diligent, supervise, and have close oversight of both. If my country or my children stray from the values and principles that I deem important, I will admonish and correct.

The neocons are promoting a form of “permissive patriotism” which, just like permissive parenting, finds the country wandering into wrong-headed and potentially harmful territory because those who are supposed to love it are not doing their duty of guiding.

  35. pete Says:

I wonder if he’s another of the morons who thinks he will be Raptured once we kill enough Muslims?

  36. leftcoast Says:

One of the best definitions I have read for patriotism is by James Bryce:
“Our country is not the only thing to which we owe our allegiance. It is also to justice and to humanity. Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong.”

On Justice: Under Bush we have witnessed an attempt to erode civil liberties under the guise of keeping us from harm; yet which is the greater harm? Bush fails here on patriotism.

On Humanity: Bush has ignored the humanitarian violence in countries of less monetary value to him. Bush fails here on patriotism.

On Righteous: Bush has demonstrated lack of character in that he willingly sacrificed a CIA agent (cowardly using staff to do the dirty work) just to get back at a critic. Bush fails here on patriotism

On keeping us strong: All that I said here above results in making us weak.

  37. Arn Gunnutes Says:

  40. hussein toasterhead Says:

Although I take issue with his gross oversimplification, the basic principle of what he’s saying is correct. Multinational corporations are just that - multinational, and the higher cause they serve is profit. Environmentalists are also multinational, and the higher cause we serve is the planet.

I do consider myself to have far more loyalty to the health of my planet than to “American advancement,” precisely because it’s “American advancement” that has been a major factor in the destruction of the environment for the past two centuries.

Perhaps that makes me less patriotic, but only in a very narrow sense of the word. It defines patriotism as “my country right or wrong.” My patriotism lies with the foundation of my country: the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the promise of government by the people of the people and for the people.

“My country right or wrong: when right to be kept right, and when wrong to be put right.”

  41. celtic cynic Says:

Well, that settles it. Blankley is more patriotic than anyone else because he says so.

More pathetic is more like it.

  42. PatrioticLiberalChristian Says:

    America the Conservative

    O horrible for polluted sky,
    For oil-stained ocean waves,
    For putrid garbage mounded high
    And rivers’ future looking grave!
    America! America!
We shed our waste on thee
And abandon wisdom for blind patriotism
    From sea to shining sea!

  43. McWars Says:

    Amen to that, H. Toasterhead!

  44. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre Says:

“conservative” columnist Tony Blankley? What exactly is he “conserving?” Stupidity? Greed? Fascism? He is actually a radical destructionist, trying to destroy the American middle class and our Constitution. Go back to Britain, and peddle your right-wing baloney there, Tony.

  45. leftcoast Says:

We first began to distort and delude the word patriotism with the naming of a security bill, “The Patriot Act”.

  46. acv Says:

Patriotism has been twisted to mean “with us or against”, “family values or no values,” and “Christian vs. non-Christian.” This distorted charge was and is being led by people who can’t balance the bible and the Constitution. They can’t honor an oath of office b/c they are so preoccupied with fundamentalist Christian “values,” which are in the eye of the beholder.

I’m so sick of this mode of operation.

  47. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

How dare Tony Blankly question my patriotism. What the f uck has he done to make this country and this world better? Nothing but open his big trap and point the finger at others. I question his patriotism. Anyone that doesn’t care about the future of this country, and this world and what we leave to the next generations is unpatriotic. See, I can say it too, Tony, baloney. These people are tiring and boring. They need to start participating in life.

  48. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

We need re-education camps for people like Tony Blankly.

That’s a common misconception ignorant Xtians make a result of bad translation. In genesis, god meant for us to be stewards of the earth. He did NOT give us permission to rape and pillage and destroy our Earthly home.

    God is an environmentalist.

  52. Klem Kiddilehopper Says:

Tony Blankely, another fat fu*k, born in London then his family immigrated here, became a naturalized citizen in theearly 50’s
Fat Boy never missed at chance to suck up all the freedoms this country offers, but somehow missed serving in the military during the late 60’s! Where was his “Love of Country” when his country was calling for men during the late 60’s
I wonder what his excuse was/is?
He must have brass balls to question anyones patriotism!

  53. pete Says:

How much longer can we allow partisan propaganda to be protected by the 1st Amendment? How much longer can our society afford to pay people to lie to us? How much longer will we sit idly and watch the media beast devour the collective conscience of our society?

Never was anyone better named for their talents than Tony Blankley.

He is precisely the person for whom the term “shit-whistle” was coined. As to patriotism, I would happily take my decorations and ram them up his as, one by one, with a plunger handle…

  56. lm945 Says:

So someone who cares about protecting our physical world is unpatriotic. The people who show blinding, unswerving loyalty to Bush and the Republican Party are the only true patriots.

Why are we allowing these koolaid-swilling morons decide who truly cares about this country and who doesn’t?

How can anyone, in their right mind, think that the conservatives love this country after what we have watched them destroy the constitution, justice department, and our way of life for the past twenty eight years (since Ronnie Reagan declared war on the middle class citizens)? They lie, they cheat, they steal, and they destroy. If they can’t find something to lie about, they make crap up. It is amazing to me that anyone even listens to these thugs.

  64. gitrdone Says:

The Conservative movement in America was hijacked by greedy neo-cons who want to further the pockets of the special interests.

So anything that stands in the way of greed in this country is considered patriotic.

Real conservatives who are more in touch with the land, would respect it and wouldn’t let the wealthy elite destroy their private property with horrible pollutants. And yet, it happens time and time again and conservatives have become so hypnotized in the last few decades, that they even support it!

And only conservatives could be hijacked like this because they tend to be much more down to earth, in good nature and simplistic…they are easy to take advantage of and they exist in large masses…so they are the perfect tools of the wealthy elite in this country.

It’s pretty sad if you ask me. I have a lot of respect for real conservatives.

  65. gitrdone Says:

Correction: Anything that stands in the way of greed is considered UN-patriotic.

  66. kasinca Says:

It’s pretty sad if you ask me. I have a lot of respect for real conservatives.

Is respect the word you are looking for when they have allowed the destruction of our way of life by following the lead of thugs in a crime family? There may be a better choice of words for their cooperation. They have been accomplices to a criminal takeover by fascist corporatists.

  67. James C. Says:

O.K. Here goes nothing. I disagree with Mr. Blankley that environmentalists are unpatriotic. But I have to say that a lot of the comments made by some of you are pretty brutal. It cannot be denied that the Democratic Party and the Environmental Lobbiests in the hip pocket of that party have made it impossible to move forward on any of the Energy issues that face this country today. For example… Nuclear Power - Blocked, Solor Power - Soon to be Blocked, Wind Power - Blocked, Coal - Limited, Clean Coal - Limited, Coal to Oil - Blocked, ANWAR - Blocked, Hydro-electric - Limited with no new construction, Off Shore Drilling - Limited but they want it Blocked. Battery Power - Inefficient, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tech - Limited, Ethonol - Too Expensive (costs more energy to produce than it creates). So of all of these technologies what are we supposed to do for the future of America??? If the Democratic Party and the Environmentalists do not want any of these then what are we supposed to do??? The answer is not to block any of these technologies, rather move ahead on all fronts and develop Energy Independance so we do not have to rely on Foriegn Oil. We do have to face that there is no immediate answer for the price of gas right now, but Energy Independance would take care of that Problem in only a few years. If we are not willing to do it ourselves then other countries will begin to Drill Off from our shores, i.e., Cuba (China, India etc.). I don’t know about the Liberals and Environmentalists but I trust American companies to be friendlier to the enviroment that any Foreign Country.

To this I have to say something. WHAT??? Just so you understand there is a clear difference between Republicans, especially the ones in the Bush - Cheney mold, and conservatives. And don’t forget the 8 years of Clinton Liberalism mixed in there. Conservatives fight for Constitutional Rights - take for example the Supreme Court Ruling on the 2nd Ammendment recently. Liberals look to destroy Constitutional Rights - take for example the Supreme Court Ruling on Child Rapist and the Death Penalty recently. In both cases the court was divided the exact same way with on judge deciding each case. In 2nd ammendment he sided with the Conservative judges, in the Death Penalty he decided with the Liberal judges. Now there is a judge that was nominated by a Republican President who does not always follow Conservative Views. Just like Bush - Cheney, they do not always follow Conservative views because they are Republicans not Conservatives. And finally you show me a Politician who doesn’t lie, cheat and steal and I will show you a shiney, new 3 dollar Gold coin!!!!

  71. ralph the wonder llama Says:

Funny how conservatives like James C. thought George W. Bush was the greatest thing since sliced bread when his approval ratings were in the stratosphere and they elected him twice, even though by 2004 his policies, priorities and tactics were set in stone and clear to anyone who paid attention.

Now that the logical results of his policies — on the economy, on foreign policy, on the politicization of everything having to do with government — are all coming home to roost, “conservatives” have suddenly discovered that Bush is Not One of Them. In fact, he may even be a — gasp! — liberal!

Funny how, once a Republican disgraces himself, conservatives are quick to point out how “liberal” he actually is. Happened with Nixon, now it’s happening with Dumbya.

    What a crock of sh!t.

  72. clarkorwell Says:

Hey, I want to breathe clean air. Should I not demand from those who ask for their vote my opinion??? If this our standing to the world, why the hell are we even trying???? This is total BS.

  73. James C. Says:

    To: ralph the wonder llama

Just so you read this from the horses mouth. I did not vote in the last two elections. In 2000 I was not in this country and did not request an absentee ballot (Neither candidate was worth my Vote). In 2004 I was in Iraq and got my absentee ballot two months after the election (Didn’t matter in the because Kerry would have sucked worse that Bush has). But it does not surprise me that you would take what I wrote out of context and add your own meaning to it. That is just one of the many Liberal tactics. Just to let you know if you want a Socialist country then Vote for Barack Hussein Obama. Me I love the Constitution and our Capitalist economy. The answer will never be found in Washington DC no matter who is in the White House.

  74. James C. Says:

    To: ralph the wonder llama

Oh yeah I remember in 2000 that was when Gore lost in FL and tried ti say that the Republicans Disenfrachised the voters right! Funny I also remember the DNC and State Democratic Leaders in MI and FL disenfranchise voters during the primaries. Yup that’s the party I want the one where my vote will not count. Oooh they broke the rules, they don’t deserve to have their votes counted. Talk about BS, You need to step back and really look at who you Nominee is.

    FL = Florida
    MI = Michigan

  75. ucsbclassics53 Says:

James, we have no way of telling if you were disillusioned with Bush or never believed him from the start. However, it seems like conservatives who claimed to be utmost supporters of Bush nowadays are starting to pin the “liberal” mantle on him as if to suggest that it wasn’t conservative ideas that failed, but Bush’s implementation of them or his betrayal of them. There have been many a conservative who has come here claiming that he never supported Bush or that he is a liberal when it comes to spending (spending like a drunk sailor is one of their favorite lines), etc.

  76. dbadass Says:

And the cool thing is that they have already set the stage to do the same if McCain loses.

  77. James C. Says:

    ucsbclassics53,

I guess you need another explanation. I never voted for Bush, as I thought I made clear in an earlier post. Having said that I do not believe that Democratic Principles such as Tax and Spend, Big Government and Rights for Illegal Aliens, Violent Criminals (i.e. Child Rapists) and dependance on foreign energy support are right for this country. But the facts are facts, Bush has spent more than a Democrat might have. He has ignored domestic policies and economic policies. He has damaged foreign policies. There is no defending that, I can’t explain it other that Bush is a Republican, not a CONSERVATIVE. The fortunate thing for me right now is Bush isn’t running for President, John McCain is. And John McCain is a lot more Conservative that Obama ever thought of being, even with Obama moving toward the center lately, trying to become more appealing to middle class America. I just don’t by Obama. He is not trustworthy, believable and he represents absolutely nothing that I veiw as important. I do not want Socialism or Communism for our country. I want Demacracy and Capitalism. I want our ingenuity to pull us through these tough times. Politicians will not do anything to help. Government is not the answer and definitely not Big Government, which Obama wants. Liberals that I know complained about the Bush Tax cut and even the “stimulus” package, until they got the checks in the mail. I beg all of you go to both candidates web sites and actually read the views on the issues as I have. Then tell me which candidates plans and points make sense to you and what you believe. I personally am going to vote for McCain because he is the best candidate and the best man for the Job.

Oops, “planting”, fool fingers, even in Spanish the word has the exact same root, plantar :P

Thanks for the soccer thumbs up! Has been a long time (44 years!) since the last time we do it. Was a real shame not to pass the semifinals, specially living in a country so devoted to football :D

“Neither candidate was worth my Vote”

This is exactly the kind of arrogant, elitist crap you get from know-it-all RePugniScums who believe that are too hip for the room.

My COUNTRY is worth my vote!! No matter who is running!

BTW, Not voting is taking a position even though you do it in a spineless, arrogant way.

The RNC must have updated their talking points. The trolls are trying to sound like they know what they are talking about but are still spewing the same old crap. As usual, the right is proving they could care less about others so long as they can gouge, lie, scam, and line their pockets at the expense of others. And if they really were in Iraq, it just goes to show Bush really has screwed the military on mental health care, among other things.

  82. LiberalVoter Says:

Re FL and MI. You mistakenly put MI when you must have meant OH (for Ohio) where the right wing cheated/screwed people out of their Constitutional right to vote. FL and MI went against ESTABLISHED, WELL KNOWN RULES, you know those pesky thing the right wing always scream about following - unless they are breaking them. And as for screwing kids, who voted against SCHIP? Why the right wing of course. And they give some bullshit reason about abuse, yeah the only abuse was the right wing could not gouge more money out of people. And who smeared a 12 year old kid, why, surprise, the right wing. And who is now claiming cudos for the new GI bill? Why, it’s your beloved McCain - yes a man of honor. Just like the man of honor in the Whitehouse (PUKE) who smeared McCain in the run up to 2000 and now your beloved McCain is licking Bush’s boots. Saying stupid things like bomb Iran - wow, how presidential can you get. And who screwed/is screwing GI’s by providing shitty health care, if providing any at all other than saying the GI is faking and sends them back into battle or throws them out on the street because a real diagnosis would cost money. Who outed a CIA agent? Who said the Constitution was just a god damn piece of paper? You know, the Constitution you SWORE to DEFEND if you really were in the military. And as for you ‘late’ ballot, guess who you have to thank for that? Yes, your right wing buddies.

All the bullshit you are spewing is well know as bullshit to those here. So go back to your handlers and tell them they have to do better than the likes of you. You fail.

I frequently torture myself by listening to Diane Rehm, whose panels reflect NPR’s pervasive and poorly understood right-wing/Pentagon bias - Wall Street Journal, conservative think tanks, Weekly Standard, Washington Times (with the occasional sop to progressives, i.e., David Corn). The callers are often far to the left of the guests.

I had to turn off this show, with its noxious theme “What is patriotism?” What a useless question. What does reflexive flag-saluting and belief in American exceptionalism mean, when the government does things that are murderous and greedy and tramples on citizens’ rights?

“American advancement” has a far more sinister meaning for many other people in the world.

I just question Tony Blankley’s worth as a human being. Could this man cheapen the aforementioned worth anymore? Can any further cost-reductions be made? Who knows. I imagine he’ll continue striving for bottom.

    …that last sentence sounded weird, didn’t it…
