Former DOJ job applicant suing department for hiring bias.»

A recent Department of Justice inspector general report found that starting in 2002, DOJ officials illegally used “political or ideological” factors in its hiring practices, choosing conservative credentials “over more qualified candidates with liberal-sounding résumés” and weeding out “candidates for career positions whom they considered “leftists.’” The LA Times reports today that one of the former applicants, who had actually worked at the department, is suing:

ashcroftweb2.jpg [O]ne of the applicants rejected for a position is suing for $100,000 in damages. Sean Gerlich has filed a class action suit. Gerlich says he was rejected because of his liberal affiliations, which officials dug up through Internet searches. […]

Daniel Metcalfe, Gerlich’s attorney and a Washington College of Law professor at American University, says his client was upset at being turned down in 2006 because he had received good marks during his previous stint as a Justice summer intern. In fact, Metcalfe says, his client was a law clerk to an unidentified chief in one of the department’s 40 components.

Uh, oh, don’t turn around there Ashcroft, there’s a boobie behind you.

  2. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

The Republican Party believes in putting loyalty to the President (whom they always like to call the Commander-in-Chief, even though that’s just one of his duties) above loyalty to the country. Never forget that.

May you all enjoy a Safe and Happy Independence Day holiday weekend.

  3. And Yet... Says:

Let a flood of such lawsuits now begin.
Sow the wind, reap the whirlwind, Dept. of InJustice.

Believe me, he’s aware of it. In fact, he was thinking about it right when that picture was taken. :)

    >Who could have anticipated the breach of the lawsuits?
    >We’re suing them over there so we don’t have to sue them over here.
    >They will greet us as litigators!
    >Once the people see our great army, they will throw subpoenas and indictments at our feet.
    >We had the same bad intel everyone had, so we never hired good attorneys.

Now what are they gonna do? They hired all of Falwells kids from regents and they discriminated against the Harvard and Yale grads - who by the way are much, much smarter about things such as the law. The DOJ is being run like a Baskin-Robbins franchise.

  8. RUCerious Says:

Since these hiring decisions were made without proper non-consideration of political affiliation, and whereas the damage to the plaintiffs career and resume will stay with he/she for the rest of their career, I don’t think 100 large is enough.

  9. McWars Says:

He never got the chance to serve at the pleasure of this president? I hope he didn’t expect a job at the “Justice Department.” That place is so 2000.

Yeah, no damage at all from interning with distinction and then having an application for employment rejected, huh? No future employer will look askance at that, right?

Oh, that’s right — I forgot R2 has no experience in the work force and thus, no idea what he’s talking about.

  11. McWars Says:

How many spelling variations remain of ‘roger’, pal, before you end up at ‘rorschach’ and take the badly needed hint?

Actually Baskin Robbins has more competent management.

    Paddy

I thought it was a beautiful variation of the anthem. If a bunch of drunks can invent the song, why can’t a sober person tweak it? It’s not like it’s a permanant addition.

  21. tokin librul Says:

The job in the nwext administration that I want is tracking down all the DoJ appointees iver the last 8 years with degrees from such schools as Regency U, and Liberty U, and Bob Jones U, and Hillsdale College, and Oral Roberts, and all the rest of those Xian degree mills, and quietly notifying them that they need to turn in their keys and vacate the premises by 15 Feb, 09…

  22. livelongandprosper Says:

    “Don’t make ME laugh”

Can you imagine the amount of media coverage several hundred lawsuits would generate? The more the better. And then maybe we can laugh like hyenas!

rogee, it is not ‘because,’ it is ‘
instead.’ “instead’ of ruling the plaintiff had the right to kick some asst AG in the balls for defaming him…

    Lady Justice has cuter nipples

  32. Chocolate Jesus Says:

I wish them luck. Although its possble they may have a case because the DOJ violated some statute by discriminating against them, “political affiliation” is not a constitionally protected class, and thus its pretty unlikely they have any consitutionally based claims..

  33. Luis M Says:

Lookie lookie, now that’s a boob!

Oh, and a statue behind him.

  34. dbadass Says:

    Do ya like boobs alot?
