Had you bothered to click on the link to the Washington Post (you do know how to click on a link, don’t you?), you would have found out how at least one town in Massachusetts has canceled its 4th of July celebrations.
You would have also found out that Chinese-made fireworks cost more now than they used to a few years ago, giving domestic fireworks makers a slight advantage.

After watching the hypocritical reichwingnuts destroy our constitution and pretend to be heroic and patriotic because FAUX NOIZ tells them to salute the flag, wear flag lapel pins, and to never ever be honest about the crooks in the WH who lied us into an illegal and immoral war for oil, I have chosen to let the pretenders pretend. July 5th, 2008 at 10:07 amMany towns in my area (Massachusetts) have cancelled fireworks because of the high cost. They’re struggling to keep their public safety and education people on the job, much less well-paid. The communities who did have displays funded them with private contributions.
I like fireworks a lot, but, as a cheap Yankee, I see them as an awful waste of a lot of money for a few minutes of light and noise when we have so many other much more pressing long-term needs.
America is a great country, a wonderful place. Our government, however, not so much.

We have traded our real “freedom” for the illusion of security - national security, the term used by the frauds to get away with all of their criminal activities.
We have traded freedom and now must suffer the consequences of being held hostage by our own government who have placed themselves above the law. They have used our Constitution as toilet paper while we watched them wipe themselves of their mess and flush it down the drain. We really have no one to blame but ourselves (our representatives who have sold us down the river).
Independence Day has a hypocritical pall cast over it. Many of us recognize that singing patriotic songs while permitting a dictator to rule us is anything but independent or free. Many of us realize the charade which we continue to perpetuate while we lie to ourselves about our greatness. (we know better in the pit of our stomach!).
Fireworks - smireworks! Who needs them when they are taking food from the mouths of our own citizens who so desperately need it? It’s part and parcel of the american delusion and we continue to fall prey to this effusive bunch of hogwash spun by the whoring media and perpetuated by a gang of thugs in our government.

In my tiny little corner of the world it was world war 3…Lived in the Seattle burb’s this time for 12 year’s…Most 4th of July’s and New Year’s celebration’s have been a little noisy at sunset or right at midnight…Not so this year…It started on Tuesday off and on and went to full blown war at 8P.M.last night and was non stop heavy duty untill 2 A.M this morning..All around our tiny resort the well to do home owner’s aquired the big bang huge fire work’s and shot them off non stop…The noise was defening and the ground did shake…Guess they all decided to spend the big buck’s to burn their yard’s and my sky instead of putting gas in their hummer’s…Glad it’s over, till next year….Blessings

Apologies to people everywhere who have actually suffered under a dictator. Don’t delude yourself into thinking that you have any clue as to the suffering of such people. Bush’s disasterous decision to invade Iraq, 4.00+ dollar gas, rising food prices and everything else combined still doesn’t make this a dictatorship. You’ve had it so soft in the U.S. that you have a distorted view of suffering. Comments like yours keep a lot of moderates from listening to your views because you appear so ungrateful. As noted by Georgette Orwell above, you can discuss problems in our country and criticize our government while still acknowledging the good here. In addition, dictators tend not to allow public criticism of themselves. I notice you seem to be quite free to express your opinion. I hope you appreciate the freedom to do that. My apologies if I’ve made an incorrect assumption and you have actually suffered under a dictator in another country at some point.

No one gives more than the US. Any type of natural disaster and the citizen of the United States gives more than any other country.
In terms of percentage of Gross National Income, US official development assistance ranks #23, at just 0.16% - far below the 0.7% we promised. Considering that most of our aid just comes back to the U.S. through grants and contracts to U.S. companies, it doesn’t strike me as all that generous.
No other country in the world can offer the opportunity that the US can.

It is hard to celebrate the destruction of our civil liberties, an illegal and immoral war for oil (which has increased 40% in price this year alone), the fact the thugs in the WH have refused to allow their thugs to testify to congress and that G. W. has single handely signed over 1000 signing statements that are meant to disable the constitution, and throw in the fact that the American public is becoming so dumb they say things like “…despite the fact that things aren’t perfect”.
Things are not good and they deserve our recognition of that fact before we have a chance of making them right.
