It is only fitting that the most patriotic tradition of this Country should fall prey to the corruption of the bushco. They have stolen every other tradition and symbol of this Country and reduced our Nation to the laughing stock of the world. We were a proud Nation at one time. We are now looked upon as a bunch of fools and we let it happen. Let us fall back to our roots and declare the Second Independence Day on that ever important Tuesday in November. Damn the Republicans! Full speed ahead to our restored Nation!
C’mon, give us the usual rightwing nonsense about ThinkProgress “hating” America for reporting this fact. Or that we are “rejoiced” that the 4th of July is no longer being lavishly celebrated, you know, all of us being “bad Americans” and all. Or that this news shouldn’t be mentioned because them terrorists are watching our every move.

It’s hard to get fireworks in the US for a simple reason: all the pyrotechnical stuff is in Iraq and Afghanistan where it entertains the locals every day, 365 days a year.

ThinkProgress did miss an important event that impacted fireworks. There were several large fireworks warehouses that burned down in China, where the majority of the fireworks are made, causing huge supply problems.
America is still the greatest country in the world. Happy Independence Day everyone.

Yep, we sure did help Katrina victims. What a country!
I’m not getting paid to post. I love my country. I believe in my country and it’s people.
Does that include Progressives, Liberals, Constitutionalists, Gays, Atheists, Feminists, vegetarians, environmentalists, and Pagans that the Neocons, Conservatives, and Libertarians dislike so much, and who are dissatisfied with the direction of this country?
The reputhuglicans have rapidly taken our country, our standing in the world, and our currency to levels we have never experienced. We are becoming a third world nation of debtors. Our banks and our government are robbing peter to pay paul and we are all worth less than we were before the lying, cheating, crooks took over under Ronald Reagan and declared war on the middle class Americans. Trickle down has never worked. Regulations were put into place to protect the majority from the minority who controls the majority of the money in the world. We need to take this country back from the corporate fascists.
Independence: The Forgotten Meaning of America
by Michael Berliner (July 3, 2004)
To the Founding Fathers, there was no authority higher than the individual mind, not King George, not God, not society. Reason, wrote Ethan Allen, is “the only oracle of man,” and Thomas Jefferson advised us to “fix reason firmly in her seat and call to her tribunal every fact, every opinion. Question with boldness even the existence of a God.” That is the meaning of independence: trust in your own judgment, in reason; do not sacrifice your mind to the state, the church, the race, the nation, or your neighbors.
Independence is the foundation of America. Independence is what should be celebrated on Independence Day. That is the legacy our Founding Fathers left us. It is a legacy we should keep, not because it is a legacy, but because it is right and just.
Great words of wisdom by our founding fathers about Independence.
Had enough, I feel exactly the same. Very deflated. The fu cking irony is so thick today, with the FISA telecom immunity issue so up in the air, I just don’t want to watch fireworks, or anything. Just stay home and hope for a better fourth next year.
wow liberals don’t cease to amaze me. all VA voter said was we are the best county, and you sappy sorry libs go right back to the blame America first whining and crying, with useless attacks. It is the liberal left that is Anti-American and just read it here on this weak blog. Just look at the title of this propaganda article. Where did an event get canceled? Once again no facts. But here are the facts if an event would get canceled it would be because the left hates America and wants to see its demise. It wont let us lower taxes or gas prices, that makes an economy weak. So blame your so called canceled celebrations on your wet blanket selves while true Americans go out and have some cold ones. Happy 4th. And where has imported fireworks prices go up, that’s hilarious, the libs don’t like fireworks anyways because it contributes to so called “global warming”. I guess you cant grill either because of the smoke, and coal that makes up “sick”. Live a litle?
America does keep giving birth to heroes. even when things seemed bleakest.
The fact that we had a magnificent charismatic war leader in George washington, who held the country together and yet refused to be made a king, decried a hereditary honor society, refused to bow to pressure to pander to Christianity–and who stepped down from power he could have kept permanently.
Frederick Douglass, Sojourner Ttruth. Abraham Lincoln, A. Philip Randolph. Martin Luther King Jr.
We may very well have had more than our share.
Just look at the title of this propaganda article. Where did an event get canceled? Once again no facts.
~drick23IQ
Had you bothered to click on the link to the Washington Post (you do know how to click on a link, don’t you?), you would have found out how at least one town in Massachusetts has canceled its 4th of July celebrations.
You would have also found out that Chinese-made fireworks cost more now than they used to a few years ago, giving domestic fireworks makers a slight advantage.
Your babbling stupidity and laziness are so glaring you are a sore spectacle to watch.
Yo Genius, those underlined words in the article are what are known as “links”. If you click on a “link” it will lead you to the article(s) that a blog is getting it’s information from.
In this case, if you click on “across the country” it will lead you to an article from that liberally biased paper, the Washington Times in which you would find the information you are asking about.
Good Luck with your search for information.
Happy Fourth!
btw: why don’t you google peak oil why you’re at it, Al Gore has very little to do with the price of oil.
Point blank. Great post. YOU are not only a great American, you are a true American.
VA voter, when you get it passed your head that saluting the flag, praising the troops and repeating patriotic slogans is all just a show to cover the true patriotism…which is CARING about this country AND it’s people. Because the country is nothing without the people, just as the people are nothing without the country. They are one and the same. So when you laugh at the poor, push for deadly wars and encourage consumption which is destroying the environment….you are NOT a great American! All the patriotic slogans won’t make you a great American. You have to walk the talk.
Haven’t seen a firework all night. The community of Springfield were I work elected not to have any this year. I believe it was for financial reasons but I am not sure.
Are you sure your name isn’t prick23? I am a veteran and I chose not to watch the fireworks because I am not proud of my country this year. After watching the hypocritical reichwingnuts destroy our constitution and pretend to be heroic and patriotic because FAUX NOIZ tells them to salute the flag, wear flag lapel pins, and to never ever be honest about the crooks in the WH who lied us into an illegal and immoral war for oil, I have chosen to let the pretenders pretend. I had rather reflect on those 58,000 who didn’t make it back like me. I had rather reflect on what that was all about even though I am an older man today and still do not know what we were trying to do. I am pissed that we, as a nation have allowed cowards and crooks take us into another war against a defenseless nation and pretend it was to cram democracy down their throats with bullets and bombs when in actuality it was for oil which is being used to hedge the losses of the large institutional investors losses in the home mortgage scam they just completed. We have problems in this country and they began with the Ronald Reagan declaration of war against the middle class back in 1980.
Republicans are not patriotic. Republicans are liars, crooks, and cowards who use war for the profits of the military industrial complex and oil companies.
listening to a re run of Mike Malloy made my holiday… the author, Vincent Bugliosi talks of his book
The Prosecution of George W. Bush for Murder
Vince also reported the MSM would not touch this book, give him interviews as they did with other books he wrote. Also to record this book on audio tape, no one in the US would do it, imagine that, but he did find a British outlet.
I love the title and he seems very confident Bush could be prosecuted after he leaves office for MURDER.
and everything was good a couple of years ago before the dems go the house and senate, then gas doubled, thanks al gore…
Are you kidding? Shit started to go way of the idiots when chimpy stole the election. chimpy has lie about the economy since he started paying his chimpettes.
What meno was that? So I suppose Mr & Mrs Fireworks live in towns where deciding whether paying the teachers, police, and firefighters is never a budgetary issue which might interfer with the lightshow that pats them on the back for their fiscal discipline and family values
Yet another reichwinger with their typical inability to click on simple link and bloody read an article has arrived.
Tanqueray the Simpleton, here is a news piece that took me a whopping 5 secs to find on CNN:
In Texas, four parched counties obtained emergency declarations prohibiting the sale of personal fireworks. In Massachusetts, several towns said fewer donations from corporate sponsors made it too expensive to mount local celebrations. Fireworks festivities being scaled back this year
And here is another one from FoxNews:
Local flag retailers aren’t flying high this Fourth of July as concerns over high gas prices, job losses and the troubled economy are causing a dip in sales.
[…]
Budget woes are also turning the lights out on fireworks shows across the state. Several cities, including Cocoa Beach, Winter Springs, New Smyrna Beach and Bonita Springs, have canceled their annual displays. Flag Sales Down in Florida, Some Fireworks Canceled
Idiotic, illiterate reichwingers. No wonder they elect warmongering halfwits to the White House. Anyone with any semblance of intelligence reminds them of their own inadequacies.
Your average reichwinger believes that ignoring reality, not talking about it, will cause it to cave in and change -as demonstrated by the braindead Bush cultists in this thread.
This mindset is not surprising, considering one of the foremost luminaries of reichwing “thought” once proudly declared to be “standing athwart history, yelling ‘Stop!’ “.
neither does the singing trout on the wall you inbred flaghumping hillbilly. wake up, there are no good guys in this world. I doubt you read much that isnt on the back of a cereal box or that takes longer than a single bowel movement to finish, but pick up a book by Noam Chomsky sometime and give us your critique of his thoughts about american power.
We kill as brutually and indiscriminately as saddam hussien or the communists ever did.
Your butchers just outsource the killing to the others so stupid people like you cant see the blood on thier hands. if you give a man power, he will abuse it. its not about america or any other country being uniquely evil, or as you insist, uniquely good.
abusing the power you’re given (or have taken) is just human nature. then again since you almost certainly beleive in a magic sky daddy who stuck his Godweenie into a mortal and got her pregnant, so the logic behind the myth of american uniqueness isnt probably something you question too deeply, if at all..
its up to those of us with less power to educate ourselves and make sure we do everything we can to try and keep those with power from abusing it.
ps. oh and VA voter, about all our “donations” to other countries…most, if not all, come with strings attached, are used as means to implement foreign policy, or come in the form of things like experimental pharmacuticals which we experiment with in 3rd world countries. rent “the constant gardener” from blockbuster sometime and get a glimpse of the tip of the iceberg that is corporate/national “benevolence” toward developing countries..
Just an observation: The more desperate the GOPhers become, the more blather they spew on the liberal threads. I guess their sense of self-loathing for having been duped by a criminal shakes their foundation to the core. They realize that their inner compass is no more.
Desperate people posting desperate comments. This is our barometer for how futile and irrelevant their meme has become.
Rising costs in blood and treasure will also mark a cancellation of the GOP in 2008. But Bush, Rove, Cheney and their contributors all got theirs, so screw you, America. How’s that for compassionate conservatism?
Tempe Town Lake must not have gotten the America is Shit memo. Just got back from a 45 minute display backed by some beautiful lightning.
And we all know how bad Tempe suffers with a high-crime inner city, and all it employers laying folks off, because of bad economic times, so it must have been a real hardship to do it. Yup, the town fathers of Tempe should be congratulated, for showing their patriotism, since we know unemployment has hit Arizona hardest.
Rightwingers mistake flag-waving, marching bands, and coordiated fireworks shows for patriotism. I am sure that those people watching the parades go by feel patriotic, but isn’t patriotism really not about those superficial displays but is truly about taking care of America’s citizens, old, young, sick, poor; protecting and defending our Constitution, not allowing elected officials to make a mockery of government, protecting the national infrastructure — I think even rightwingers would agree with that yet they mistakenly believe that the selfish, profit-driven mindset of Bush&Co, determined to eliminate the middle class is for them.
It’s very hard these days to feel good about the United States, when Bush&Co have taken it so far afield from the vision of our founders.
Now we can move into some real fireworks - the fireworks of Rove being held in contempt of congress, being shackled and brought forward by force. Next week’s “people’s fireworks” vis-a-vis the FISA immunity question will mean an end to some very cushy, profitable jobs in Congress for those who vote(d) “yes”. Indeed, they will be named and handily unseated by real Dems and not “Bush Democrats” next time.
The fireworks next week may either make or break the Obama Tsunami which I dread seeing since, according to Charlie Reese today, we will have to pick the lesser of two evils and hold our collective noses to vote (even if our votes are not counted and/or hacked). Yes, the people’s fireworks have begun.
Lemme see…how many political parties do we actually have now?
We have old repukes and Reagan repukes; we have true patriotic democrats (Feingold, Kucinich, Dodd) and faux Democrats or more aptly monikered: Bush Democrats. Then we have the people who will truly become kingmakers - the swing voters and Independents.
From the numbers, I’d say we legitimately now have 5 bona fide political parties - unless, of course, we can really only have two - which would mean that the Independents and true democrats are the only ones who matter.
Many towns in my area (Massachusetts) have cancelled fireworks because of the high cost. They’re struggling to keep their public safety and education people on the job, much less well-paid. The communities who did have displays funded them with private contributions.
I like fireworks a lot, but, as a cheap Yankee, I see them as an awful waste of a lot of money for a few minutes of light and noise when we have so many other much more pressing long-term needs.
America is a great country, a wonderful place. Our government, however, not so much.
Our recent problem in identifying the real Democrats (apart from criminals like Steney Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi, and their cadre of blackmailed democrats)has been solved. They’ve not outed themselves and we know who they are. These fake democrats (following in the footsteps of their idol, Lieberman) can now kiss their seats good-bye.
The celebration of “independence day” is quite hypocritical with the cost of fireworks being absurd and vulgar when people are becoming homeless and starving in this country.
We have traded our real “freedom” for the illusion of security - national security, the term used by the frauds to get away with all of their criminal activities.
We have traded freedom and now must suffer the consequences of being held hostage by our own government who have placed themselves above the law. They have used our Constitution as toilet paper while we watched them wipe themselves of their mess and flush it down the drain. We really have no one to blame but ourselves (our representatives who have sold us down the river).
Independence Day has a hypocritical pall cast over it. Many of us recognize that singing patriotic songs while permitting a dictator to rule us is anything but independent or free. Many of us realize the charade which we continue to perpetuate while we lie to ourselves about our greatness. (we know better in the pit of our stomach!).
Fireworks - smireworks! Who needs them when they are taking food from the mouths of our own citizens who so desperately need it? It’s part and parcel of the american delusion and we continue to fall prey to this effusive bunch of hogwash spun by the whoring media and perpetuated by a gang of thugs in our government.
There were morons in my neighborhood shooting off fireworks all night long, they didn’t stop until sun-rise.
The dogs were upset all night. Every blast set off another round of barking…
if i’d had an rpg, there woulda been one more BEEG blast…and then blessed silence…
In my tiny little corner of the world it was world war 3…Lived in the Seattle burb’s this time for 12 year’s…Most 4th of July’s and New Year’s celebration’s have been a little noisy at sunset or right at midnight…Not so this year…It started on Tuesday off and on and went to full blown war at 8P.M.last night and was non stop heavy duty untill 2 A.M this morning..All around our tiny resort the well to do home owner’s aquired the big bang huge fire work’s and shot them off non stop…The noise was defening and the ground did shake…Guess they all decided to spend the big buck’s to burn their yard’s and my sky instead of putting gas in their hummer’s…Glad it’s over, till next year….Blessings
The rising costs of imported fireworks, local budget crunches, “high fuel and transportation costs,” and the tight economy have canceled fireworks shows across the country.
Thanks to the conservative’s obsession for power and wealth these so called “patriots” have made it more difficult to celebrate patriotism.
Independence Day has a hypocritical pall cast over it. Many of us recognize that singing patriotic songs while permitting a dictator to rule us is anything but independent or free.

Apologies to people everywhere who have actually suffered under a dictator. Don’t delude yourself into thinking that you have any clue as to the suffering of such people. Bush’s disasterous decision to invade Iraq, 4.00+ dollar gas, rising food prices and everything else combined still doesn’t make this a dictatorship. You’ve had it so soft in the U.S. that you have a distorted view of suffering. Comments like yours keep a lot of moderates from listening to your views because you appear so ungrateful. As noted by Georgette Orwell above, you can discuss problems in our country and criticize our government while still acknowledging the good here. In addition, dictators tend not to allow public criticism of themselves. I notice you seem to be quite free to express your opinion. I hope you appreciate the freedom to do that. My apologies if I’ve made an incorrect assumption and you have actually suffered under a dictator in another country at some point.
No one gives more than the US. Any type of natural disaster and the citizen of the United States gives more than any other country.
In terms of percentage of Gross National Income, US official development assistance ranks #23, at just 0.16% - far below the 0.7% we promised. Considering that most of our aid just comes back to the U.S. through grants and contracts to U.S. companies, it doesn’t strike me as all that generous.
No other country in the world can offer the opportunity that the US can.
July 4th, 2008 at 6:02 pm
What opportunity do you mean, dying due to lack of health insurance? I’m pretty sure there are lots of places in the world where you can do that. Like Niger or Burkina Faso or something.
Of course, with the majority of Americans saying that we’re going the wrong way, layoffs, poor economy, etc.
I wonder if these put a pall on the ceremonies ?

Not that right-wingers know WHY. There are 3 schools of right-wing “thought” in contemporary America:

2. The theocratic view — Cal Thomas, the late Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, et al.
3. The combo view — POX Spews, swastika radio, et al.
Regardless of who chumped who FIRST, plutocracy is TEXTBOOK tyranny — as is theocracy.
REAL Americans loathe tyranny — the difference between right-wingers and the rest of us.

July 4th, 2008 at 7:10 pmThinkProgress did miss an important event that impacted fireworks. There were several large fireworks warehouses that burned down in China, where the majority of the fireworks are made, causing huge supply problems.
July 4th, 2008 at 7:14 pmVA Voter,
Getting paid is a joke, sort of.
But really, I asked a serious question at #16.
I love our Republic too. This is why I stand on the Fourth to defend the Fourth. Will you?

July 4th, 2008 at 9:20 pmThe reputhuglicans have rapidly taken our country, our standing in the world, and our currency to levels we have never experienced.
July 4th, 2008 at 9:36 pmIndependence: The Forgotten Meaning of America
by Michael Berliner (July 3, 2004)
July 4th, 2008 at 10:16 pmWe’re celebrating Indepence Day at TheZoo.
Come over and read our great posts, and listen to some totally cool music. :)
July 4th, 2008 at 10:27 pmMaybe next year, under an Obama administration can we truly celebrate Independence Day and democracy.
July 4th, 2008 at 10:39 pmHad enough, I feel exactly the same. Very deflated. The fu cking irony is so thick today, with the FISA telecom immunity issue so up in the air, I just don’t want to watch fireworks, or anything. Just stay home and hope for a better fourth next year.
July 4th, 2008 at 10:47 pmwow liberals don’t cease to amaze me. all VA voter said was we are the best county, and you sappy sorry libs go right back to the blame America first whining and crying, with useless attacks.

July 4th, 2008 at 11:04 pmThe fact that we had a magnificent charismatic war leader in George washington, who held the country together and yet refused to be made a king, decried a hereditary honor society, refused to bow to pressure to pander to Christianity–and who stepped down from power he could have kept permanently.
July 4th, 2008 at 11:08 pmI meant to type the Washington Times not the Post in my previous comment.

July 4th, 2008 at 11:33 pmOh yea, and agreeing with Sean Hannity won’t make you a great American by the way;)
July 4th, 2008 at 11:33 pmHaven’t seen a firework all night.

July 5th, 2008 at 12:39 amlistening to a re run of Mike Malloy made my holiday… the author, Vincent Bugliosi talks of his book

July 5th, 2008 at 2:07 amWhat meno was that? So I suppose Mr & Mrs Fireworks live in towns where deciding whether paying the teachers, police, and firefighters is never a budgetary issue which might interfer with the lightshow that pats them on the back for their fiscal discipline and family values
July 5th, 2008 at 3:03 amSo we have arrived at the end of shock and aah!
July 5th, 2008 at 3:04 amYet another reichwinger with their typical inability to click on simple link and bloody read an article has arrived.

July 5th, 2008 at 3:20 amYour average reichwinger believes that ignoring reality, not talking about it, will cause it to cave in and change -as demonstrated by the braindead Bush cultists in this thread.
This mindset is not surprising, considering one of the foremost luminaries of reichwing “thought” once proudly declared to be “standing athwart history, yelling ‘Stop!’ “.
And that was the smart one.

July 5th, 2008 at 4:33 am>wow liberals don’t cease to amaze me.
neither does the singing trout on the wall you inbred flaghumping hillbilly. wake up, there are no good guys in this world.
July 5th, 2008 at 7:52 amJust an observation: The more desperate the GOPhers become, the more blather they spew on the liberal threads. I guess their sense of self-loathing for having been duped by a criminal shakes their foundation to the core. They realize that their inner compass is no more.
Desperate people posting desperate comments. This is our barometer for how futile and irrelevant their meme has become.
July 5th, 2008 at 9:20 amRising costs in blood and treasure will also mark a cancellation of the GOP in 2008. But Bush, Rove, Cheney and their contributors all got theirs, so screw you, America. How’s that for compassionate conservatism?
July 5th, 2008 at 9:26 amTanqueray Says:
Tempe Town Lake must not have gotten the America is Shit memo. Just got back from a 45 minute display backed by some beautiful lightning.
And we all know how bad Tempe suffers with a high-crime inner city, and all it employers laying folks off, because of bad economic times, so it must have been a real hardship to do it. Yup, the town fathers of Tempe should be congratulated, for showing their patriotism, since we know unemployment has hit Arizona hardest.
Putz.
July 5th, 2008 at 9:33 amRightwingers mistake flag-waving, marching bands, and coordiated fireworks shows for patriotism.
July 5th, 2008 at 9:40 amIt’s very hard these days to feel good about the United States, when Bush&Co have taken it so far afield from the vision of our founders.
TP, please take spammer’s pinup down. This is no place for him to be indulging masturbatory fantasies…
July 5th, 2008 at 9:55 amNow we can move into some real fireworks - the fireworks of Rove being held in contempt of congress, being shackled and brought forward by force.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:05 amLemme see…how many political parties do we actually have now?
We have old repukes and Reagan repukes; we have true patriotic democrats (Feingold, Kucinich, Dodd) and faux Democrats or more aptly monikered: Bush Democrats. Then we have the people who will truly become kingmakers - the swing voters and Independents.
From the numbers, I’d say we legitimately now have 5 bona fide political parties - unless, of course, we can really only have two - which would mean that the Independents and true democrats are the only ones who matter.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:07 amMany towns in my area (Massachusetts) have cancelled fireworks because of the high cost.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:09 amOur recent problem in identifying the real Democrats (apart from criminals like Steney Hoyer, Nancy Pelosi, and their cadre of blackmailed democrats)has been solved. They’ve not outed themselves and we know who they are. These fake democrats (following in the footsteps of their idol, Lieberman) can now kiss their seats good-bye.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:09 amThe celebration of “independence day” is quite hypocritical with the cost of fireworks being absurd and vulgar when people are becoming homeless and starving in this country.
July 5th, 2008 at 10:15 amThere were morons in my neighborhood shooting off fireworks all night long, they didn’t stop until sun-rise.

July 5th, 2008 at 11:53 amThe rising costs of imported fireworks, local budget crunches, “high fuel and transportation costs,” and the tight economy have canceled fireworks shows across the country.
Thanks to the conservative’s obsession for power and wealth these so called “patriots” have made it more difficult to celebrate patriotism.

At what? According to the UNDP, we’re only #12.

Now dix, don’t let your frustration cause you to insult one of the lib protected groups. Fortunately for you, no one else is still reading this thread. Otherwise, you’d be in trouble for using “gay term.” Don’t forget, you think they are just like you. Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone about your little lapse. Just try to maintain your composure in the future, okay, bud? Now you have yourself a fantastic day. ;)
“Just try to maintain your composure in the future, okay, bud?”
Just as soon as you come up with a phucking brain, OKAY BUD?

There are quite a few of us moderates who are voting for Obama. So I guess what I’m doing is a good thing then, eh dix? You let me know. Have a great evening. ;)
