CNN’s Late Edition celebrated its 10th anniversary today by re-airing some of Wolf Blitzer’s key interviews with Bush administration officials about the Iraq war. Some highlights:
GOV. BUSH: If at any time I found that the Iraqis were developing weapons of mass destruction, they wouldn’t exist anymore. [Jan. 2000]
RICE: There will always be some uncertainty about how quickly [Saddam] can acquire nuclear weapons. But we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud. [Sept. 2002]
RUMSFELD: There is no question but that there are fabricators that operate in the intelligence world, and there’s also no question you can find intelligence reports on every side of every issue. [Nov. 2005]
CHENEY: You can go back and argue the whole thing all over again, Wolf, but what we did in Iraq in taking down Saddam Hussein was exactly the right thing to do. [Jan. 2007]
Watch it:
It’s been an eight year long bad acid trip.

July 6th, 2008 at 3:00 pmwe get to remember bushco’s “deception”…
CNN and MSNBC show little or no news on weekends. Just not enough going on around the world, I guess.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:08 pmAll that blinking and eye movement by Bush when he was interviewed while still a candidate is indicative of lying. When people lie, the do funny things with their eyes or their lips or chin. His plan all along was to go into Iraq and steal the oil. The boy Bush is NOT a good liar.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:08 pm[T]here’s also no question you can find intelligence reports on every side of every issue.
~Rumsfeld
Sure you can find “intelligence” on every side of an issue, if you fabricate your own intelligence that tells you what you want to hear.

Veterans Group Urges Support to ‘Finish the Job’
By Michael D. Shear
Sen. John McCain will get some battleground-state help this week from Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, who appear in a television commercial aimed at convincing the public that the United States is winning in Iraq.
Produced by Vets for Freedom, an organization of veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the ad will run in Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and on cable nationwide. The group, with about 20,000 members, will spend $1.5 million on what it calls the first of many spots during the next month.
“As an organization, we have four months here, a window of opportunity of heightened awareness,” said the group’s chairman, Pete Hegseth, himself an Iraq vet. “We think it’s crucial that the success our troops have made on the battlefield is relayed to the American public.”
The ad features eight veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and the mother of a soldier in Iraq. “We changed strategy in Iraq,” one of the soldiers says in the ad. “And the surge worked. Now that’s change we can believe in. We need to finish the job. … no matter who is president.”

Poor guys. I really feel sorry for them. Evidently they don’t know the political situation hasn’t substantially changed in the country in years. It sounds like all they’re afraid of, is that their sacrifices will be wasted. Not that there has been no progress at changing the circumstances which keeps them there. It’s starting to feel like a willful blindness to the political situation, brought on by a fear of defeat.
July 6th, 2008 at 3:44 pmI hate what this country has become:
We are only a Democracy in name. In name only. We are ruled by a Oligarchy.
We are ruled by the elite and corporations.
This country’s economy is a Military Economy — the only ones raking in the dough are the military and the contractors in Iraq (i.e. Haliburton, Blackwater)
We were lied to on 9/11.
We were lied to about Iraq and Afghanistan.
As Joe Schmoe tries to fill his gas tank, buy food (and getting from Point A to Point B, just to get that food is becoming obscenely expensive)
Until we realize that this is a phony war on terror, that there is no enemy — our infrastructure will continue to crumble, our moral standing in the world (prisoner abuse, secret prisons etc.), our economy will continue to tank.
While our Corporate Controlled Media talks about the important issues like whether a candidate wears a flag pin or not — this flim flam press will continue to divert from the real issues.
The Bush Admin was/is a Big Bad Bully which the Media cows to.
And we suffer for this each and every day. Every American dying over in Iraq, every Iraqi getting blown up is so blatantly an attempt to Control Oil, make big profits for the military and their contractors.
I hate what we have become. And now Obama inches toward the center. Maybe to the right. God help us all.

July 6th, 2008 at 4:02 pmCheney, ever the smug, arrogant, self-righteous, fatuous bore that he is says: “taking down Saddam Hussein was exactly the right thing to do.”
And with that, he tries to put his role in the invasion of Iraq above all doubt, beyond all discussion, as if he was answerable to nobody.
Too bad for him that the question remains: if it was the “right thing to do”, why sell the invasion with fearmongering, lies, and fabrications?
July 6th, 2008 at 4:11 pmCheney said “taking down Saddam Hussein was exactly the right thing to do.”
There is still 6 monthss to take him and Dumbya out and absolutely this is the right thing to so. Any takers?

July 6th, 2008 at 4:58 pmUmmmmmmmmmmm…..
Who here thinks a Pres. Obama is gonna apologize to the Iraqis for his predecessor’s immoderate and hasty “taking down” of Saddam Hussein, and the trillions of dollars of dqamage inflicted, the hundreds of thousands–millions!–of lives taken, ruined…withdraw, immediately, and pledge to actually REBUILD Iraq to it’s pre-ICORP state?
are you out of your fathermocking SKULL???
A Pres. Obama MIGHT pull the “combat” (Hunh? which ones are htey again?) troops out in 16-24 months, if everything’s going swell…peace has broken out, presumably…flowers are growing from gun barrels…yeah, like that…
July 6th, 2008 at 5:42 pmAnd now Obama inches toward the center. Maybe to the right.
Katy, don’t give up hope yet. I seriously think that “moving to the right” is just another one of the memes that the “liberal” media has been repeating. A close look at Obama’s positions show little if any movement since he first stated them.
July 6th, 2008 at 5:55 pmCheney said “taking down Saddam Hussein was exactly the right thing to do.”
And suppose some other jerk in another country decided that taking down Bush & Cheney is exactly the right thing to do? Would that justify bombing American cities & killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people (as Bush et al did), sending U.S. citizens to Mexico, Canada, etc. as refugees (as the Iraq war has done to Iraqis & nearby countries)? Good Lord, Bush & Co. are shameless war-mongers.

This loser couldn’t find the truth if he STUTTERED upon it!!!
July 6th, 2008 at 6:52 pmMy video isn’t working, I hope this info isn’t duplicated there.
This was Bush’s response to that quote to Blitzer (Sep ‘06).
BUSH: We shouldn’t be sending mixed signals. And if any time I found that the Iraqis were developing weapons of mass destruction, they wouldn’t exist anymore.
BLITZER: Who wouldn’t exist anymore? The weapons wouldn’t exist…
BUSH: The weapons of mass destruction, yes. And I’m not going to — they just need to hear that from a potential president. If we catch them in violation of the agreement, if we in any way, shape or form find out that they’re developing weapons of mass destruction, that there will be action taken. And they can just guess what that action might be.
(END VIDEO CLIP)
BLITZER: The point though being that — at least to my mind — the weapons of mass destruction issue, in your mind, even as a candidate running for president, was a trigger potentially that could lead to war.
BUSH: Well, of course Saddam — I viewed Saddam Hussein for what he was, a threat. He was declared a state sponsor of terror, Wolf, by previous administrations.
BLITZER: But there are other countries that have been declared state sponsors of terror, like North Korea, like Syria, Cuba. You don’t go to war against them.
BUSH: Well, North Korea hadn’t invaded its neighbors. North Korea, you know, hadn’t made declarations of intent. North Korea is relatively isolated compared to Iraq.
Every threat must be taken seriously and every threat must be dealt with in different fashion. I strongly stand by my decision to remove Saddam Hussein.
BLITZER: And you don’t look back with any regrets?
BUSH: I regret when people lose lives. But — you know, and presidents don’t get to do do-overs. But I believe that the decision was the right decision. And now we’ve got to help this young democracy survive.
And what’s interesting is extremists and radicals aim to destroy young democracies, whether it be Hezbollah, or whether it be al Qaeda, who you mentioned, in Iraq. And that’s the real challenge of this — of this century. It’s a challenge between moderation and reform versus extremism and radicalism. Those extremists and radicals are willing to use terror and murder as a weapon to achieve their objectives.

July 6th, 2008 at 7:27 pmLate Edition’s 10th Anniversary today showed the Jan 28, 2007 interview with Cheney about whether or not the invasion was justified. Cheney said that Saddam had kicked out all the inspectors. Blitzer did not say “NO HE DID NOT”. No one at CNN ever does when this is said—whether it is Cheney, W, Rice, Rumsfeld, Bennett, or whoever. Maybe that is why conservatives say it so much on CNN—because they know CNN will not question it.

No question, Obama looks better by the day. I check this electoral map daily and Obama is gaining ground even in the red states. Some, like Karel on kgo.com, are still pushing for Hillary, making comments that Obama is slipping and Hillary needs to make the argument she is the best candidate over Obama, during the Denver convention in August. Unbelievable. I have never seen so much whining over the loss of Hillary… those of us that supported Kucinich, then Edwards then moved onto Obama did not throw these childish tantrums we are witnessing. Hillary ran a nasty, deceitful ugly campaign and went into debt 20 million … how can anyone, except the less intelligent crowd as the polls indicate, want her?
If by chance some polls indicate Obama is not doing well, then I question the polling. From what I understand, polling is done on land line phones… and who uses that… certainly not the more intelligent mobile Obama supporters.

This is moral tripe. Hezbollah is a legitimately elected government, according to the Bush model. You don’t like, I don’t like it, but then, several of my other dreams did not come true. And as to Al Qaeda, what have we, the saviors of the world against terrorism done? Let OBL set up a new organization in Pakistan. Cut the moral BS, this is and always was a war for oil. Not only did we lose the moral high ground of creating a democracy in the mid east, where none is wanted or possible, but we did not get any oil.
Moderation and reform? It took christianity 500 years to decide its not a good idea to burn witches. Expecting to see M & R in your lifetime, or even within McBush’s 100 years is folly. I truly expect America to win in the end, against all the terrorists, Islamofacists, antichrists, demons real and imagined, because we will set the best example for a just society. Bush has just made this a lot harder in the short term.

Just for clarification, those we’re Bush’s words. I thought it might be useful to consider Bush’s explanation of the quote, so I posted the CNN transcript. But, I didn’t do a good job of indicating that last paragraph as Bush’s response to Blitzer.

What did he claim were his beliefs, and what are his actual beliefs? Can we have some links, evidence? Something… anything?
And what does that have to do with Wolf, Bush, or the Big Lie in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq?
July 7th, 2008 at 1:28 amActually, Mr. Cheney, invading a country to depose its leader is a violation of international law to which the U.S. is signatory. That means it was unconstitutional. But, nice try at deflection.
The stated casus belli was that Iraq was a threat to the U.S. because of weapons – chemical, bio, and nuclear – which you said there was no doubt that he had. There obviously was great doubt.
