CNN’s Late Edition celebrated its 10th anniversary today by re-airing some of Wolf Blitzer’s key interviews with Bush administration officials about the Iraq war. Some highlights:
GOV. BUSH: If at any time I found that the Iraqis were developing weapons of mass destruction, they wouldn’t exist anymore. [Jan. 2000]
RICE: There will always be some uncertainty about how quickly [Saddam] can acquire nuclear weapons. But we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud. [Sept. 2002]
RUMSFELD: There is no question but that there are fabricators that operate in the intelligence world, and there’s also no question you can find intelligence reports on every side of every issue. [Nov. 2005]
CHENEY: You can go back and argue the whole thing all over again, Wolf, but what we did in Iraq in taking down Saddam Hussein was exactly the right thing to do. [Jan. 2007]

Sen. John McCain will get some battleground-state help this week from Iraq and Afghanistan veterans, who appear in a television commercial aimed at convincing the public that the United States is winning in Iraq.
Produced by Vets for Freedom, an organization of veterans of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the ad will run in Michigan, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia, and on cable nationwide. The group, with about 20,000 members, will spend $1.5 million on what it calls the first of many spots during the next month.
“As an organization, we have four months here, a window of opportunity of heightened awareness,” said the group’s chairman, Pete Hegseth, himself an Iraq vet. “We think it’s crucial that the success our troops have made on the battlefield is relayed to the American public.”
The ad features eight veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan and the mother of a soldier in Iraq. “We changed strategy in Iraq,” one of the soldiers says in the ad. “And the surge worked. Now that’s change we can believe in. We need to finish the job. … no matter who is president.”

Poor guys. I really feel sorry for them. Evidently they don’t know the political situation hasn’t substantially changed in the country in years. It sounds like all they’re afraid of, is that their sacrifices will be wasted. Not that there has been no progress at changing the circumstances which keeps them there. It’s starting to feel like a willful blindness to the political situation, brought on by a fear of defeat.

And they can just guess what that action might be.

BLITZER: The point though being that — at least to my mind — the weapons of mass destruction issue, in your mind, even as a candidate running for president, was a trigger potentially that could lead to war.

BLITZER: But there are other countries that have been declared state sponsors of terror, like North Korea, like Syria, Cuba. You don’t go to war against them.
BUSH: Well, North Korea hadn’t invaded its neighbors. North Korea, you know, hadn’t made declarations of intent. North Korea is relatively isolated compared to Iraq.
Every threat must be taken seriously and every threat must be dealt with in different fashion. I strongly stand by my decision to remove Saddam Hussein.

BUSH: I regret when people lose lives. But — you know, and presidents don’t get to do do-overs. But I believe that the decision was the right decision. And now we’ve got to help this young democracy survive.
And what’s interesting is extremists and radicals aim to destroy young democracies, whether it be Hezbollah, or whether it be al Qaeda, who you mentioned, in Iraq. And that’s the real challenge of this — of this century. It’s a challenge between moderation and reform versus extremism and radicalism. Cheney said that Saddam had kicked out all the inspectors. Blitzer did not say “NO HE DID NOT”. No one at CNN ever does when this is said—whether it is Cheney, W, Rice, Rumsfeld, Bennett, or whoever. Maybe that is why conservatives say it so much on CNN—because they know CNN will not question it.

No question, Obama looks better by the day. I check this electoral map daily and Obama is gaining ground even in the red states. Some, like Karel on kgo.com, are still pushing for Hillary, making comments that Obama is slipping and Hillary needs to make the argument she is the best candidate over Obama, during the Denver convention in August. Unbelievable. I have never seen so much whining over the loss of Hillary… those of us that supported Kucinich, then Edwards then moved onto Obama did not throw these childish tantrums we are witnessing. Hillary ran a nasty, deceitful ugly campaign and went into debt 20 million … how can anyone, except the less intelligent crowd as the polls indicate, want her?

This is moral tripe. Hezbollah is a legitimately elected government, according to the Bush model. You don’t like, I don’t like it, but then, several of my other dreams did not come true. Not only did we lose the moral high ground of creating a democracy in the mid east, where none is wanted or possible, but we did not get any oil.
