Fox News Smears Journalists Who Dare To Report A Critical Word About The Network
Last week, Fox and Friends aired digitally-altered images of New York Times reporter Jacques Steinberg and editor Steven Reddicliffe after the paper reported that Fox News’ ratings are beginning to tank. A Fox spokeswoman responded by claiming that “altering photos for humorous effect is a common practice on cable news stations.”
Last week’s incident was not an aberration; it is Fox News’ modus operandi. The New York Times’ media reporter David Carr writes today of the pernicious attack machine that Fox News employs against journalists who dare to write or report a critical word about the network. Carr explains:
At Fox News, media relations is a kind of rolling opposition research operation intended to keep reporters in line by feeding and sometimes maiming them. Shooting the occasional messenger is baked right into the process.
As crude as that sounds, it works. By blacklisting reporters it does not like, planting stories with friendlies at every turn, Fox News has been living a life beyond consequence for years.
Carr cites numerous examples. For instance, David Folkenflik – a former media reporter for the Baltimore Sun – said Fox refused to return his calls for 15 months after he wrote a critical piece about Geraldo Rivera. Also, Fox News ignored Steinberg’s call while he was writing his story on the network’s declining ratings, but “they e-mailed his boss asking why they had not heard from him.” And also this from Carr:
Earlier this year, a colleague of mine said, he was writing a story about CNN’s gains in the ratings and was told on deadline by a Fox News public relations executive that if he persisted, “they” would go after him. Within a day, “they” did, smearing him around the blogs, he said. (I did not ask him for a comment because the information was of a private nature.)
Gawker reports that the colleague in question is NYT reporter Tim Arango. After Arango wrote a story in March about CNN gaining on Fox News, Jossip reported rumors that Arango just returned to the Times after “a stint in rehab” and speculated that he wrote the piece because he was “auditioning for a CNN gig.”
Two former Fox employees told the Times that they participated in similar kinds of smear activities “but had signed confidentiality agreements and could not say so on the record.” Karl Rove must feel right at home.

Oh, and the alleged demobilization of paramilitary groups isn’t actually happening.
And did I mention that the paramilitaries often use child soldiers?
Now, this is not an attempt to defend FARC, who is just as guilty of crimes against humanity, and use kidnappings, mines, assassination, and child conscription in their fight. However, my tax dollars do not go to FARC. They do go to the Colombian paramilitaries, however, and that’s a situation that cannot be allowed to continue.

Yes - they were negotiating for the release of 300 hostages, including Ingrid Betancourt, according to numerous sources. Uribe didn’t like that, though, which is why he illegally invaded Ecuador to assassinate 25 alleged FARC members with cluster bombs. It’s pretty amazing how one laptop happened to survive the blasts completely intact, and that it just happened to have an email exchange between Reyes and Chavez about chemical weapons.

It starts with an allegation that liberal blogs and the liberal movement are ruthless and that any improper or unfair tactics are justified. The usual ends justifies the means argument that justifies any tactic.
However, we have just had a demonstration through the election of Bush and a Republican congress that demonstrates just how corrupt, ineffective and incompetent Republican rule has been. We see it with the wholesale violation of basic constitutional guarantees (habeas corpus and the fourth amendment), disregard for international law and the commission of war crimes (torture, renditions and GITMO) as well as the use of government to spread propaganda (paid reporters, McClellan’ revelations of a permanent campaign and the politicization of career civil servants.) All these depredations were committed in the name of battling a higher enemy.
Our civil discourse has been poisoned by those like Rupert Murdoch, Clear Channel and other right wing media outlets. Like this administration, the ends justifies the means. Their adoption of smear tactics belies their antipathy to democracy and to a well ordered press. It will be necessary to roll back the concentration of media ownership that has fueled the right wing propaganda machine.
Roboto and others like him make false allegations without proof. Rational thought is replaced with an authoritarian group think that has existed throughout many fascist regimes and now threatens the United States. TP presented evidence of photo altering and explicit evidence of other misdeeds by FOX. Roboto and his clan have not. TP need not respond. It is incumbent upon those making such allegations to provide some basis for the allegation Roboto’s is all sound and fury, signifying nothing.

TP may not distort photos, but as was pointed out on the first thread about these photos, they do deliberately use photos that make those they oppose look drugged, sinister or foolish. If this occurred with the same frequency to people across the political spectrum, one could chalk it up to poor photographers. Since it happens almost exclusively with those TP opposes, it’s obvious that it’s deliberate. You could just read the original thread and save yourself from posting all the same stalls and excuses used there. As noted there, I have no intention spending any time posting information of which you are well aware. Many of you posted remarks about the photos. Usually the woman were called dogs, lesbians, c*nts, or b*tches. The guys were usually said to look drunk, drugged, evil, etc. On the chance that there is someone reading this blog who is unaware of this practice, you can easily scroll back through the pages. The photos are right there for your viewing. ;)

In the left-wing world, the end justifies the means. Fox altered photos to influence opinions about the subjects. TP deliberately uses photos of people mid-blink to make them look drunk, or more likely uses video to catch just the right unflattering second to influence opinions about the subject. There is a world of difference between those actions in your mind, right, bud? At least in the other thread, the lefty didn’t try to deny what TP does. She just tried to avoid it by returning to what Fox did with every comment. ;)
