Uh, colonialhead, I think you mean "in light of these recent events..." not "in lieu," which means "instead."

In lieu of these recent events, I have added several new designs to the SHOP.

The first is a "McSame" design with photoshop of John McCain.
The other is a simple text "McCain=Bush" design.
These designs can be found in several colors and on several pieces of merchandise.

If you are outraged by this news, let everyone know with one of these great designs.

But, gee, I thought He-Man McSame already said he doesn't need Secret Service protection? Another flip-flop! Now he needs Secret Service protection against 61-year-old librarians! What a disgrace!! That's right, folks... Repunklicans are all for "freedom of speech," as long as they don't have to hear what you want to say.

.134 - Mark

“Open to the public” does not mean that you have a right to be there. It means that you don’t need a ticket to attend. She was charged with trespassing just like she would be if she had shown up on my lawn with a sign.

--------------------------------

The difference here, Mark, is that "open to the public" is an open invitation for ANYONE (the "public") to attend. It has nothing to do with tickets. If you had a sign on your front lawn that said, "open to the public", you would be hard-pressed to enforce a trespassing citation after you technically invited the public to be there.

Ask any insurance agent who deals in homeowners insurance how they define "invitation" when it comes to entering someone else's home with illegal intent. There is a huge difference in how a claim is handled when the homeowner leaves his front door wide open and the house unoccupied, versus an actual break and enter.

This woman most definitely had her first amendment rights violated, and she will win in court - if it even goes that far. My money's on dismissal, but no one will be held accountable for this very illegal action.

I'm still confused as to why a republican would be offended by the words "McCain=Bush".. I would think it would be more of a compliment in republican circles. Maybe they're trying to tell us something... like maybe they agree with her.

This woman has received more notoriety and visibility because of this brown shirt tactic than she would have otherwise if they had just left her alone. There will be even more on July 23rd when she goes to court.

This is a classic example of the short-sightedness of the typical republican. Act first, think later.

Republicans have become nothing more than a group of idiots who THINK they're qualified to run a democracy, but can only have their way and acquire power when they openly break the law, subvert the US Constitution, or steal elections.

Republicans are finished in America.

Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

    #
    murder1 Says:

Have any of you noticed you are all posting comments with the same opinion to others with the same opinion?

So, are you suggesting that we should agree with the arrest of this librarian for not breaking the law?

What I am saying is that you are all voicing your outrage like anyone here will notice it, and then they themselves will become outraged; sites with dissenting opinions would be a better place to sound off. No one here cares what you say because they are all of the same opinion. I am of the same opinion as you all as well. Asking McCain to come and arrest you over and over does nothing.

Where is the MSM on this? They practically crucified the Obama campaign over the two Muslim women who were not allowed in the camera background. Here is a REAL free-speech issue, and the MSM is silent.

Beware- the MSM is owned and run by large companies beholden to the Republican Party. Do not expect anyone else to get a fair shake.

Where does one who DOES NOT agree with the US Government go? How do we rally our fellow Americans to our cause if we are gagged and bound by the ropes of governmental power?

"I am... against all violations of the Constitution to silence by force and not by reason the complaints or criticisms, just or unjust, of our citizens against the conduct of their agents." --Thomas Jefferson, 1799

It is not hard to imagine the dismay Jefferson would feel viewing how American government now treats its citizens. Today dissent is sequestered behind "free speech zones", and corporations can delete any speech from the internet that they do not like (violates their "policy"). Individuals who wish to petition their leaders for redress are treated like criminals (in this case turned INTO a criminal).

I was watching this policeman with great sadness. The police state we have become has no recognition or understanding of what liberty is. It does not understand or have knowledge of our Constitution. The policeman is little better than the jack-boots of Hitler or the old Soviet Union. They are "just following orders". In this case orders from Federal agents passed by a civilian "with authority". How sad for our country.

Progressives might not object as long as the target is Bush or McCain. But, obviously hecklers can come in either partisan persuasion and the objects of heckling can be anyone.

Hecklers may be exercising free speech, but are they promoting an environment of reason or simple mob rule. A mob rule that is a competing brand of ‘raw power’ that Gore may not have been addressing, but I contend, is just as limiting in terms of reason.

My concern is not the librarian. My concern is the more prevalent incidence of heckling (that I believe precipitated the event). If you can explain to me how heckling provides us with a more reasoned environment to debate our issues, I’m all ears. I think the jeopardy from this form of expression, is that it will lead to more heavy handed control of more reasonable expression.

Gore's quote from Assault:

It was not always this way. Why has America’s public discourse become less focused and clear, less reasoned? Faith in the power of reason - the belief that free citizens can govern themselves wisely and fairly by resorting to logical debate on the basis of the best evidence available, instead of raw power - was and remains the central premise of American democracy. This premise is now under assault.

backup is more concerned with manners, than the right of free speech.

This attitude has been a huge problem for the last 25 years, and it needs to go away.

Zooey. I’m reading Gore’s ‘Assault on Reason’.

Disclaimer: Gore opposes Bush and McCain. Me taking a quote from his book is not an attempt to imply that Gore agrees with me in any way.

I agree with a lot of what Gore says. I was initially attracted to the book and the idea that we are becoming less reasonable as a society. Here’s a paragraph from the introduction:

correction: the reason definition was not part of Gore's quote from 'Assault'.

His words end at 'This premise is now under assault.'

My bad.
