i called turner’s office to inquire about his misstatement. according to turner’s staff, the may 15 vote was not the final vote, the final vote was june 19 (roll call #432; http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2008/roll432.xml) and turner did in fact vote “aye.”

i appreciate the work done by think progress but in this case the report of turner’s sleaze is simply wrong.

and make no mistake — republicans ain’t no friends of mine. i just believe the record should be corrected.

Unfortnately no, Mike Turner took office in 2003. Last time in 2007 the person running against him was arrested for domestic violence. So he really didn’t have anyone running against him because they couldn’t find a last minute replacement.

Update: If you clik shayne’s “Link” it t akes you to the article and at the top of the page is the paper’s “masthead” which includes their Phone # I called and asked for the editor, Got Roy on the line and asked him why his paper would publish such a piece without the disclaimer that the author voted against this bill that he is trying to take credit for. He said that they did check adn the author did vote for the bill. I said, “true, but only after he voted against it and he only voted for it because it was attached to a larger spending bill. But he infact railed against along with McCain and the President. I also said that I was curious as to why they took down the comments. He said, “he took them down because they appeared to be part of an organized campaign and that some of the posters were calling the author a liar and saying derrogatory things about the paper.”

He further commented that if posters were merely commenting on how that author had voted against it before he voted for it, he would have kept them up. I told him that I had seen comments along those lines but he removed all of them.

I asked him if he thought it was the job of the press to hold our elected officials accountable. He said of course and if it turns out that this author needs correcting he will do so.

I told him I look forward to his follow up on this article. He thanked me for my call.

Sent this email to a list of people I found email address for for the newspaper website:

I’m curious about a few things.

1. Prior to printing an opinion piece, does any do any checking to verify the accuracy of the claims made in the piece? Rep. Mike Turner claimed in an opinion piece three times that he supported the GI bill. No where did he mention, or did your paper indicate that Mr. Turner actually opposed the bill and in fact, voted against it’s passage.

2. What is your company’s policy on moderating comments left by visitors? I noticed there was a large collection of comments pointing out the hypocrisy of Rep. Turner’s opinion piece, only to see them slowly disappearing from your page (I have screen shots). I would like to know why that happened? Was it because they pointed out Rep. Turner’s bald faced lying? Did that go against company policy to follow the blind GOP support that is evident from your list of opinion pieces?

I don’t really expect an answer, but I look forward to receiving one.

Rep Paul is blowing more smoke. Texas is NOT giving up on new corridors for the Trans Texas/Trans National highway. They are simply “considering other options by creating a committee to discus expanding the current infrastructure to support the expected traffic load”.

Rep. Paul is desperately trying to deflect any possible negative news, and spin any other news to be partial to his “successes”. Rep. Paul is praying for re-election, and lying and exagerating about his “accomplishments”, no matter how baseless they are is the only plank left to the sinking GOP platform.
