Fiorina touts insurance plans that cover birth control, but forgets McCain opposes them.»

During a breakfast with reporters yesterday hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, top McCain adviser Carly Fiorina talked up Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) preferred approach to health care by saying that “there are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication“:

Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard chief who is now the Republican National Committee’s “Victory Chairman,” was discussing consumer-driven health insurance at a breakfast with reporters when she proposed “a real, live example which I’ve been hearing a lot about from women: There are many health insurance plans that will cover Viagra but won’t cover birth-control medication. Those women would like a choice.” For effect, the woman frequently mentioned as a possible McCain running mate repeated: “Those women would like a choice.”

But Fiorina neglects to mention that in 2003 McCain voted against an amendment that would have required insurance coverage of prescription birth control.

UpdateMcCain also voted against a 2005 bill requiring health insurance companies to cover birth-control pills as well as Viagra.

Which means tomorrow we will hear that Fiorina was misquoted by the press.

  2. Zimzone Says:

Princess Fiorina didn’t check with King before opening mouth.

Where the HELL was birth control when McStupid was born?

That’s what happens with Republicans, pretending to represent the American people when all you really represent are corporate interests. Like liars in general, it’s hard to keep your stories straight.

So either she forgot McCain’s record, she doesn’t know his position (neither of which would say much for her professionalism) or she’s bullshitting to try and garner some female votes.

I note she isn’t talking about a policy, she’s saying “women would like a choice”–it doesn’t mean McCain has any intention of giving them a choice.

With this level of message incompetence, it’s easy to see why McCain’s first term will really be Bush’s 3rd.

Being in McCain’s brain trust must be like riding a roller-coaster, backward.

    Give him a minute…
    he’ll change his mind again.

  8. DRxJ Says:

Later, at the debriefing, Senator McCain approached Fiorina and was quoted as saying…
“At least I don’t plaster on the makeup like a trollop, you c*nt.”

Fiona was talking about “consumer driven health insurance.” McCain voted against a government mandate, which by definitiion is not “consumer driven.” McCain is not my candidate, but let’s be fair here.

Like consumers never contact their congresspeople for help, with legislation?

C’mon Jabber, you can do better than that, surely.

    Just sayin’…

  11. conniptionfit Says:

Don’t kid yourselves, this is not about giving women a choice. This is about them figuring out that the pharmaceuticals can make lots more money if their birth control products are covered- and McCain can get a big fat contribution if he supports them.

  12. conniptionfit Says:

    Don’t bet on it, Doc!

  13. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

I don’t think that will get much traction Dr. Matt.

A contribution he would pay for, with the religious right. While he might get contributions from Big Pharma, he’d lose millions of Religious Right votes in the bargain.

Just wait, the comparisons to “Iron Ass Nixon,” and his days as a successful poker player, will shortly be forthcoming - especially with the recent release of Nixonland, by Rick Perlman.

Maybe she did. We already know that McCain doesn’t remember what he voted for or against back in 2003. Heck, he wasn’t even 70 years old back then.

So? Grampy McSame can’t be expected to remember what the hell he voted for in 2003, can he???? And get off his lawn!!!

  20. paleolib Says:

“Consumer driven health insurace” is a buzzword generally used to describe high deductible policies on the theory that if you have to pay the first two to five grand you will shop around for the best price (worked real well when my wife broke her foot last year — she would be my widow now if I had insisted on shopping for a specialist to set the fracture). The whole concept mainly works out giving rich people another tax break because it allows socking more money tax deferred into a health savings account. Does squat for the currently uninsured who can’t afford the premium and can’t use the tax break.

Bigger issue and I think Milbanks’ point is how do you think having ol’ Carly on the ticket talking about womens’ choice would go over with the base? Aside from pushing Bob Barr’s vote totals into double digits that is?

  21. ralph the wonder llama Says:

jibberjabber, your point is somewhat murky. Are you saying that something other than “consumer-driven health care” was what drove health insurers to cover Viagra but not birth control?

  22. LibertyLover Says:

Those women would like a choice, but as everyone knows…in Republican world… women are second class citizens and as such cannot get choice as an option.

  23. Frosty Cupcake Says:

“Consumer driven health insurance” is an oxymoron anyway.

Consumers drive *nothing* in the health insurance industry.

  24. unbelievable Says:

There are many women who take prescription birth control to cub PMS, acne, heavy periods, and/or menstrual pain - ye the religious right refuuses to see our need for this medication as valid simply because they despite the female reproductive system.

But, a pill for a man to have a hummer is just fine. No wonder women in this country still feel like second class citizens. We are.

jabberjaw Says: Once something mandated by the government, the consumer no longer has a choice.

Actually - once something mandated by Corprate America, the consumer no longer has a choice.

Our government has been taken over by Corporate American and is no longer of, by and for the people. Perhaps that’s why you dislike the government so much. It’s owned and run by the greedy corporations.

  27. Frosty Cupcake Says:

    unbelievable:

For several years in Florida the State paid for Viagra for male inmates - even ones convicted of sex crimes.

The legislature put a stop to it when the practice was made public and the public cried foul. Still, it tells you a lot about how men in positions of power view Viagra. As a right and a necessity.

  28. Frosty Cupcake Says:

The Right’s insane repudiation of government - and their steadfast belief in Corporate America - would be pathetic if they weren’t dragging us all down with them.

    That’s, well, unbelievable!

We need to get those people out of power and start electing more women to balance out all the testosterone. There are countless primate studies that how that in time sof stress and over-population (as we currently have), that it’s always women who diffuse hostilities and war…

  30. Leftside Annie Says:

Jebus, these people are just flarking STOOPID.

  31. 5th Estate Says:

J-J, Frosty and unbelievable expanded on my one word comment perfectly.

“consumer-driven health insurance” describes something that doesn’t exist, but assuming it could be brought into being, how would it work exactly? The closest thing I can think of is–oh yes, a taxpayer funded universal national health insurance system based not on ‘consumption’ however, but on need.

  32. shoeless Says:

    jabberjaw Says:

Once something mandated by the government, the consumer no longer has a choice.

Typical. The Republican idea of “choice” is to give insurance companies the choice to deny coverage to women who want the choice of whether or not to become pregnant.

    jabberjaw Says:

Fiorina was talking about “consumer driven health insurance.” McCain voted against a government mandate, which by definitiion is not “consumer driven.” Once something mandated by the government, the consumer no longer has a choice.

First, the only times these companies listen to “consumers” wishes, is either through the threat of litigation, or legislation. Second, litigation only addresses past mistakes, mostly in an uneven manner, and usually requires legislation to clarify the issue. Third, to get “choice,” for consumers often requires legislation, to reign in the egregious, monopolistic practices of companies, left to their own devices. The California energy crisis is a prime example.

  34. barfly Says:

    Oops. Make that “rein in.”

  35. progresivo Says:

I didn’t knew that Fiorina was in a top position in the RNC, very good news for the democrats !! This is a woman who has an admirable capacity to climb herself to the top of power and to mess up big time !!

  36. curious Says:

Ms. Fiorina, should look up McCain’s past statements regarding birth control. He was for it. Then he was against it. Then he was for a woman’s right to choose. And last year it was no abortion for any reason. Not rape, not incest not the mothers health. And now he does not want birth control covered by health insurance. Evidently that doesn’t mean Viagra which is covered by most insurance companies. Can you say Sexism?

I was not interested in Ms.Fiorina speaking about anything. This former Hewlett Packard executive who was very nearly run out of her job for being incompetent. She nearly drove it into the ground. It figures she would speak for McCain.

  37. Jess Wonderin Says:

Oh Carley . . . only in your mind would your warped history of failure be thought of as “Cabinet Material” . . . but with the progress made by the Republicans and the examples Bush has set you may have missed your chance . . . don’t think an Obama Administration has anything other than a 6×8 cell in mind for your “style” of management . . .

  38. upside99 Says:

This is just one more example of the incompetence McDepends is surrounded by and would be a view as to what his staff would be like if he actually was able to steal the November election.
