Fiorina was talking about “consumer driven health insurance.” McCain voted against a government mandate, which by definitiion is not “consumer driven.” Once something mandated by the government, the consumer no longer has a choice.

First, the only times these companies listen to “consumers” wishes, is either through the threat of litigation, or legislation. Second, litigation only addresses past mistakes, mostly in an uneven manner, and usually requires legislation to clarify the issue. Third, to get “choice,” for consumers often requires legislation, to reign in the egregious, monopolistic practices of companies, left to their own devices. The California energy crisis is a prime example.

Typical. The Republican idea of “choice” is to give insurance companies the choice to deny coverage to women who want the choice of whether or not to become pregnant.

“consumer-driven health insurance” describes something that doesn’t exist, but assuming it could be brought into being, how would it work exactly? The closest thing I can think of is–oh yes, a taxpayer funded universal national health insurance system based not on ‘consumption’ however, but on need.
