Flummoxed By Vietnam Vet, McCain Falsely Claims He ‘Received Every Award From Every Vets Organization’

Posing the first question in a Denver town hall meeting yesterday, a Vietnam veteran challenged Sen. John McCain on his Senate voting record regarding veterans issues, remarking he had voted against increasing vets health funding four years in a row. Ignoring the veteran’s point, McCain testily — and repeatedly — insisted that he had “received every award from every major veteran’s organization in America”:

MCCAIN: I’ve received every award from every major veteran’s organization in America. I received every organization in America their awards. … The reason why I have a perfect voting record from organizations like the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and all the other veterans service organizations is because of my support of them. [...]

VETERAN: You do not have a perfect voting record by the DAV and the VFW. That’s where these votes were recorded. These votes were proposals by your colleagues in the Senate to increase health care of the VA in 2003, 4, 5, and 6 for troops returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. And you voted against those proposals. [...]

MCCAIN: I’ve been endorsed in every election by every veterans organization that do that, I’ve been supported by them, and I’ve received their highest awards from all of those organizations. So I guess they don’t know something you know.

Watch the video, via AHiddenSaint:

McCain has made the exact same claim before — and it is just a false today as it was then. As ThinkProgress documented, McCain’s so-called “perfect” record has been roundly criticized by prominent veterans groups: He received a grade of D from the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and a 20 percent vote rating from the Disabled Veterans of America; Vietnam Veterans of America noted McCain had “voted against us” in 15 “key votes.”

As for the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars — with whom McCain claims to have a “perfect voting record” — both groups vigorously supported Sen. Jim Webb’s (D-VA) GI Bill that McCain tirelessly opposed.

Later in the town hall, McCain admitted he does “not have a perfect voting record,” but then declared that questions about veterans issues were off limits: “I will be glad to debate a lot of things, but not that one,” McCain said.

Digg It!

Have you noticed how McIIIrd says the same thing twice, just awkwardly phrased, a lot?

What’s wrong with his speech patterns?

  10. Innocent Bystander says:

Whoops, looks like they’ll have to implement Bush-style town-hall chats. Ones where only rich, white documented Republicans are allowed to attend. Perhaps he’ll just stop campaigning altogether; these reality leaks are just too damn dangerous for McBush.

  11. RUCerious says:

Let’s let the American Legion, VFW, VVA, IAVA determine if veterans questions are off the board. If not, McIIIrd can just stand there like the dummy he truly is and just STFU when asked a veterans issue question.

Later in the town hall, McCain admitted he does “not have a perfect voting record,” but then declared that questions about veterans issues were off limits: “I will be glad to debate a lot of things, but not that one,” McCain said

This is because he would look like he DOES NOT support the “troops” (whoever the hell that is) and the so-called media can not repeat the lie that ALL of the Military supports this fool. Look I have been a part of an organization that rewards people for not doing a damn thing, while those that do get passed over for promotions so they retire or get out. Also within that organization there are people in charge who WE would not follow to a river if we were dying of thirst. WE are taught in this organization to respect the rank, and not the man. This organization is the U.S. Army, and I am proud of mine and all who have served service. But that does not mean that those who are popular have a monopoly on that service, and NOONE’s service is more important than another’s.

The point is Mr. McCain is LYING when he says that he has a perfect voting record (which he later admitted, although I bet to a much smaller audience than when he made that claim), and is a COWARD for trying to claim that Veterans issue’s are off limits. he doesn’t want to be challenged by other Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines, because to do so would put him and his media in a bad situation.

This is just getting ridiculous as far as the media goes with this man, and you can best believe that more and more vets will be standing up against instead of laying down like the so-called media.

  19. Progressive101 says:

Off limits? McCain has no problem using veterans as props around him, claiming they all support him, and having his staff and TV adds depict McCain as a military hero that qualifies him to be president.

“I will be glad to debate a lot of things, but not that one,” McCain said.

I hope the complete quote of this is available, including clarification that “that one” refers to his failure to support the troops with his votes. That should make a nice negative campaign ad – and this year the Dems HAVE to run negative ads.

  37. JMOHR says:

The real question is how the media will treat this exchange with McCain. There are two primary issues that the press must address.

First, McCain has lied concerning his record with veteran’s organizations and must be called to account for his conduct. A press corps that ridiculed Al Gore over made up minor issues concerning inventing the internet (Gore only said that he and certain others in Congress were instrumental in founding the internet by opening up what had been a government/university system to the public), Love Story (his old roommate confirmed that Gore was indeed one of his inspirations for the male character) and other such issue. Kerry was taken to task by a press giving voice to utterly false accusations over his record in Vietnam. Now, we have McCain lying on several occasions concerning his record with veteran’s groups.

Second, McCain now says that he will not debate veteran’s issues??? Why not? McCain should be asked to explain why he gets to choose issues he will debate. Is it because he is looking bad on the issue? Or, my bet, will he come up with some BS excuse that it is unpatriotic or too emotional to discuss the matter?

  38. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

“I will be glad to debate a lot of things, but not that one,” McCain said.

Is that what he is going to tell Obama when they are in their first debate. But, then, he probably won’t have to. I suspect that all the debates will be highly controlled with the candidates (especially McCain) saying what subjects they will talk about and what subjects they won’t talk about.

I think Obama is making a mistake by not taking McCain up on his town hall proposition. He should agree to it but insist that the meetings be open to anyone who wants to attend, no invitations, first come first serve. Then he needs to insist on part of the meeting being a Lincoln-Douglas style debate where each candidate gets to ask the other a set number of questions (say 5). I’m betting that McCain will run as fast as he can away from a setup like that. But, as long as Obama refuses to meet with him in a town hall setting, he is setting himself up to look like a wimp.

  39. gus smith says:

But..but, but, veteran’s issues, Iraq and the military are all that McCain is about. Why would he declared ‘veteran’s issues’ off the table of discussion?

  49. veteran says:

As far as McCain and Bush are concerned, the troops are simply cannon fodder. He and Dubya don’t support Jim Webb’s GI Bill. According to them, if you educate the troops, they’ll leave the military.

I availed myself of the GI bill to get my masters degree at night school. All our men and women in uniform should be able to do the same.

And speaking as a DAV lifetime member, I can assure you that Mc Cain gets a low rating from the DAV every year. It boggles my mind that an Annapolis graduate and retired officer opposes Webb’s GI Bill.

  50. republicanSScareme says:

McCain is a BS artist. He’ll say whatever he has to to get elected, like all Republicans. I seriously doubt if our respected mass media will carry this story in depth, if at all.

  52. A Patriot Acting says:

So veteran support issues are off limits. Reporters need to “earn” a spot in the front of Cyndy’s jet if they want that coveted access to McCant. Only obvious supporters are allowed to attend open forum town hall meetings, others will be turned away or arrested. Now we here that his campaign is screening callers questions on conference press calls. Straight Talk my ass! This bitter old man has adopted Herr Bush’s tactic of avoiding face to face confrontations with anyone who disagrees with him. McCant is rapidly forming his very own GOP bubble. It also seems as though the only veterans that McCant supports are veterans from Vietnam and earlier. If you are a veteran that served in any conflict after Vietnam, McCant says you can go Cheney yourself!

  53. A Patriot Acting says:

Between Maliki’s latest assertions of preferring a timeline for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, Pakistan’s continued acts that go directly against their ally America’s interests, McCains abyssmal voting record on veterans issues and lockstep voting record in support of Bush, the three major issues that McCant feels secure in (foreign affairs, veterans and that whole maverick charade) are starting to show many stress cracks. His pathetic attempts to portray himself as the saviour of our economy are laughable. I hope when he has his inevitable anger fit/breakdown that their are various cameras rolling from different angles.

  56. The Skeptical Cynic says:

    Where’s Waldo McShame:

In the movie Men in Black, the villain breaks out of his humanoid facade and shows himself as the cockroach he really is. This is only July and McCain’s shell is already starting to crack. People are not going to like what they see when what’s inside McCain fully emerges . I read within the last few weeks a prediction of some off the walls things to happen. One is that McCain will resign from the race before November. In Vietnam he said every man has his breaking point and he had his. It is now sounding like such a scenario could happen. One critical question too many – he blows his cool, lashes out physically at someone obviously weaker than he. He can not cope when confronted with power. It’s better that he break now- can you imagine waking up this nutcake as president at 3:00 AM
