Petraeus prohibits phrase ‘We’re winning’ in connection with Iraq.

During a washingtonpost.com chat today, CBS News foreign correspondent Kimberly Dozier — who was severely injured from a car bombing in Iraq in 2006 — said that she “understand[s] from folks in Baghdad that Gen. Petraeus won’t let folks use words like ‘triumph’ or ‘victory’ or say ‘we’re winning.’” Will Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) — who frequently claims that “we are winning in Iraq” — and his allies Sens. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) take Petraeus’s advice? Probably not:

Graham: “We’re winning because John McCain understood Iraq better than anybody else.” [CBS, 7/06/08]

Lieberman: “Now, his policy is working. Iraq is succeeding.” [ABC, 7/06/08]

McCain: “Senator Obama refuses to acknowledge we are winning in Iraq. He refuses. He called it spin. Is General Petraeus spinning the American people? I don’t think so. I don’t think so.” [MSNBC, 6/13/08]

Cuz we're NOT winning! This war was un-winnable from the start -- and BushCo knew it.

The only phrase Petraeus allows is "We're spending in Iraq." As in, money, time, lives and our international reputation.

I think they meant to say, "We're Spinning on Iraq."

    Now that would be true.

That said...so are U.S. commanders, with so many false dawns when it looked like the violence was down, and political change was taking hold. I understand from folks in Baghdad that Gen. Petraeus won't let folks use words like "triumph" or "victory" or say "we're winning." The most they'll venture is "we're aiming for irreversible momentum." I hope they get there soon--for my friends from the day of the bombing who are back there on the ground, for everyone serving on what feel like endless rotations, and for all the Iraqis living through it all day by day.

Perhaps this idiot troll can tell us how you can win an occupation. Because that is what Iraq is. We are occupying a foreign country against their will. 24. Above the Clouds Says:

The only "win" was the real reason for this Iraq mess to begin with--that was Bush "winning" the re-election of 2004. In the end, there will be no freedom, no WMD, no oil, no democracy, and no peace--the whole thing was a stinking, lying mess--Bush's legacy.

Have you forgotten that there were UN inspectors looking for those WMD that would have liked to continue looking but were stopped by Bush?
Have you forgotten that the reason so many people 'believed' in the UN is that Colin Powell was sent to swear up and down that we knew they were there and we knew where to find them?
Have you forgotten that Rummie said they were in the 'North, South, West and East... ?'
I remember you guys telling me I was stupid for doubting the existence of WMD and that we HAD to attack ASAP to get them... I remember that real well...

Apparently you are making up your own "facts". The UN inspectors never concluded there were WMD. Plus, the UN didn't demand that Iraq was invaded, herr dubyah demanded this war.

  41. Chuck U. Farley Says:

Huh...what's wrong with you people? We're winning in Iraq. In fact, we've been winning since March 2003! The Iraq occupation is such a plus for America that we just may stay and keep winning for another 5/10/100 years! I dare anyone to say we're losing then!

  42. jb Says:

We shocked and awed the country, destroyed schools, water, sewer, power, hospitals, bridges, important archeological sites, spread a lot of depleted uranium around and are in the process of bankrupting our own country for the benefit of a few contractors, we have sacrificed over four thousand of our own people, maimed thousands more, displaced millions of Iraqi citizens, payed money to get various groups to stop attacking, depleted our military, destroyed the credibility of the USA, tried our best to privatize the National Iraqi oil into corporate hands. If this what Republicans consider winning, I'd hate to think what their idea of losing would look like.

  43. President Bush is the Best Says:

We are winning in Iraq. Deaths are down 80%. We have to fight them there in order to not fight them here.

    _______

If you mean the UN Security Council, that's only because someone with the international stature of Colin Powell stood before the UNSC and blatantly LIED to them about Iraq's WMD.

Our intelligence agencies, however, knew that Iraq had NO WMD CAPABILITY

    ~Cook

And apparently you have forgotten the other members of Security Council insisted resolution #1441 didn't grant the US the use of force against Iraq, and that they threatened to vote down a US-sponsored resolution to allow said use of force -the very reason why the Bush administration refused to go to the UN again to get another vote by the Security Council on this.

In other words, the UN Security Council didn't drink the kool-aid re those pesky fictitious WMD, the Bush administration had a hissy fit and decided to go with a "coalition of the willing" (does that trigger any memories? How about Rumsfeld's "Old Europe"? No?)

Amazing how short people’s memories are now a days.

Indeed. Specially those, like you, who don't pay attention. You'd do better stop drinking the kool-aid. It can permanently damage your brain, if it hasn't already.

  59. pete Says:

The idiot trolls can't even read their own side. Petraeus knows that "winning" is getting out with the fewest possible additional casualties and Bushco doesn't have enough integrity to begin the inevitable withdrawal.

And how does "decreased casualties" stand up when April was the highest in nearly a year and June saw more casualties than May and March combined? How about the fact that casualties, military and civilian, were higher in the second quarter of '08 than the first and approached the same levels from the previous year. Did the success of the surge begin and end in May?

When someone spouts "decreased casualties" they are referring to a condition which existed for a month.

  64. republicanSScareme Says:

You forgot to mention that General Pertraeus has also prohibited some other expressions like:

"Who got us into this mess?"

"Why did I join the Marines?"

"I should have gone to reform school."

"How does that fragging thing work now?"

"Is there anyone here who knows what they're doing?"

"Lucky thing most of these bodies are dead Iraqis."

    "democracy, schmockcracy..."

And so on. There's a free brochure at the PX.

  65. republicanSScareme Says:

Republicans and their shills continue to claim that the UN thought Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. That is a bald-faced lie. As someone mentioned, Colin Powell did convince the Security Council to go along with the US's claims, but the UN did have inspectors on the ground and this is what Hans Blitz of the UN said about it before the speech:

"I think the inspector should be objective, and we should answer and tell the world only what we have seen, and not tell the world that, yes, they positively have weapons of mass destruction."

Blitz was very firm in his refusal to say Iraq had WMDs.

They also keep claiming that "all the world's intelligence agencies" agreed that Iraq had WMDs. But the only Ace in this deck is the assumption of a nuclear WMD.

Iraq was known to have used biological and chemical WMDs in the past, so no self-respecting intelligence agency would not agree that IRAQ "had" chemical and biological weapons. We also have to deal with the likelihood that that capability was given to Iraq by the United States to fight Iran.

By the way, with a little help from a half-witted chemist, anyone can make a biological or chemical WMD in their bathtub.

Republicans need to deal with reality and not fantasy, or else they're never going to solve their personal problems.

  66. republicanSScareme Says:

Is General Petraeus spinning the American people?

John, Joe, Lindsey...you want to plug in your brains before reading this.

General Petraeus did NOT SAY we were "winning the war" and in fact has specifically prohibited anyone else from saying so or face a firing squad.

Now WHO is SPINNING WHAT? DING, DING, next stop, planet Earth.

You guys are pathetic, brain dead idiots.
