New Jersey GOP takes down ‘Obama loves America like O.J. loved Nicole’ banner from website.

After local Democrats “alleged racist campaign tactics,” the Republican Club in Pemberton, NJ removed a banner yesterday from its website that compared Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) to O.J. Simpson. “Obama loves America like O.J. loved Nicole,” the banner read. Though the image has now been removed, Blue Jersey saved a screen shot of the offensive banner:

obamaoj.jpg

Ed Kuck, the Republican County committeeman who placed the image on the website, told the Philadelphia Inquirer that he had put it up while adding pictures from a local rally for Sen. John McCain (R-AZ). Simpson was effectively found liable in a 1996 civil trial for the death of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson.

What these idiots don’t realize is there is a reason the township voted all the rethuglicans out of office from the mayor through the entire council at the last election. They don’t get it, however, and are still causing trouble filing suits against the Democratic mayor and council and shouting them down during town council meetings. They are true rethuglicans and most of the people in the town are tired of them. Since the Dems have been in charge, the streets are cleaner, the police respond faster, crime seems to be down and there are fewer stray pets wandering the streets. People are noticing the difference, so I doubt the Pemberton Rethugs will be back in office anytime soon. I will be actively campaigning against them this time!

  61. getOverIt says:

Tasteless, sure. Offensive, sure. But which version of “racist” does this meet ?

    rac·ism
    1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
    2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
    3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

  62. ralph the wonder llama says:

    getOverIt Says:
Tasteless, sure. Offensive, sure. But which version of “racist” does this meet ?

It looks like you got your definitions from dictionary.com — a fine source, although you neglected to include a link.

Was that because the page also includes this definition from American Heritage Dictionary?

The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.

Can you offer another basis of comparison between the two men in question, besides their skin color?

  63. getOverIt says:

I didn’t include the definition you posted because it was essentially the same as definition #1 from my post. The fact that the two men have the same skin color does not insinuate that one race is superior to another.

The comparison to a murderer may be offensive to you and others, but in the English language, it doesn’t qualify as being racist.

    >

    *

  67. getOverIt says:

    Joe Cantwell,

It’s not an argument, it’s a statement of fact. The word “racist” is being misused here. It does not apply. Too often our language is misapplied by ignorance or for the sake of sensationalism. This is a perfect example.

The fact that you’re offended by the banner doesn’t make it “racist”.

  68. ralph the wonder llama says:

    getOverIt Says:
I didn’t include the definition you posted because it was essentially the same as definition #1 from my post. The fact that the two men have the same skin color does not insinuate that one race is superior to another.

The comparison to a murderer may be offensive to you and others, but in the English language, it doesn’t qualify as being racist.

(sigh) Okay, just on the off-chance that you’re capable of rational debate, I’ll explain it to you this way:

In the definition I offered, you conveniently ignored the primary part:

The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability

in order to falsely equate it with:

a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one’s own race is superior and has the right to rule others.

If you want to stick with your more restrictive definition, the inclusion of the term “usually” seems quite important, in that racism need not always be characterized by a belief in racial superiority. It also includes the characterization of people based on their race, which is what the offensive banner did in this case.

There is no other reasonable means of comparison between the presidential candidate Obama and the murderer Simpson other than their race. One could take the comparison further and equate the majority race of the nation that Obama seeks to lead (white) with the race of Simpson’s victims (both white).

The racial component of the message is overwhelming and is clearly its primary intent.

You don’t do very well trying to drop this in the path:

The comparison to a murderer may be offensive to you and others, but in the English language, it doesn’t qualify as being racist.

Strictly speaking, it’s true, the comparison to a murderer is not “racist” in the general sense. However, we are talking specifically about a notorious African-American murderer being compared to the first African American to (presumably) receive a major party’s nomination for President.

THAT is racist, when there is no other reason to juxtapose the two aside from their common race.

  69. ralph the wonder llama says:

Wrong. A racist statement need not overtly include the narrow parameters of racism that you’re insisting on.

Racist intent is seldom openly expressed because of this thing called “social norms”. Most people, you see, recognize that racist statements don’t go over very well with a general audience, so they are couched in less overt trappings, delivered in code, or otherwise disguised as “possibly offensive, but not technically racist”.

Your disingenuous parsing of this issue is pathetic.

“Pemberton Township Republican Club”, I write to you to express my utter outrage, and my extreme embarrassment at being a fellow Republican, at your contemptible, unacceptable, and inexcusable website banner comparing Mr. Obama to O. J. Simpson. That your lackey was quoted as saying: “I found out it was inappropriate, and I took it down,” Kuck said” leaves me speechless and disgusted. He ‘found out’ it was inappropriate? How could he not know it was inappropriate and unacceptable? What kind of rubes does your 527 employ?

We Republicans are supposed to be better; we are supposed to stand for what makes America great, not snickering, racist boobs with uninformed minds and hating hearts.

Are our Republican ideals, policies and visions so corrupt, so
bankrupt, so bereft of public appeal that they cannot stand on their own? Can we maintain political support in no other way than to appeal to the lowest of the low, the bigots, racists, morons and hicks? You all may think this is very funny, but it is a black eye for Republicans everywhere. Maybe you didn’t notice, but this will be a very tough election year for us–oh, right, you are from Pemberton–maybe you DID notice–your lot got shown the door last election, didn’t they?

Probably because of attitudes and stunts like this. Grow up or stop representing yourselves as Republicans. We are ashamed of you, ashamed to be associated with you. You make Republicans everywhere appear to be the “lowest of the low, the bigots, racists, morons and hicks” which you Pemberton lot apparently are.
