Fox News guests defend Gramm’s ‘nation of whiners’ comment.

Yesterday, McCain adviser Phil Gramm sparked controversy when he said the U.S. had become a “nation of whiners” over the economy because the recession is largely “mental.” Today, Fox News guests defended Gramm’s comments. Matthew Alexander of Fox News, said Gramm was “technically right”:

ALEXANDER: I mean, technically he’s right — two periods of negative economic growth. So he is right, but you don’t wanna be saying that to voters. They’re not going to like that.

Right-radio talker Mike Gallagher applauded Gramm’s “guts,” claiming the current economy is “not that bad”

GALLAGHER: Well, I think Phil Gramm has the guts to say what a lot of you business experts are reading between the lines … Don’t think for one moment that the whiny news pundits and the gloom and doom pundits in the mainstream press aren’t impacting the way people are viewing the economy. … It’s not that bad. Phil Gramm put it best: misery sells newspapers.

Watch it:

“Growth is holding steady at 1 percent. We are still the dominant superpower we always were,” Gallagher said, defending the state of the economy.

Let’s all make sure we follow all of Faux NoNooz advice on the market; We can make a killing investing in this “great economy”.

And people actually watch AND BELIEVE this happy horse shit!

  4. shoeless says:

No no no! It was just a misspelling by the liberal biased media. What Phil Gramm really said was, “The U.S. has become a nation of winners!”

  5. Game of Life says:

    The sky is really falling.

how can any repug keep up with such bs. there has to be inter-party fighting going on concerning important issues, but there isn’t not even from the msm.
mcchimp is doing more than flip-flopping he’s constantly running his into a brick wall.

Talk about being out of touch with reality. I guess Katrina wasn’t that bad either. Dead bodies floated for days, but it could had been worse. right repugs? Dumbasses all of them.

Sweet Jesus, what is wrong with these morons? Growth is at 1% we’re in debt to china, japan and europe to god knows how much and gas is up 200% since chimpy took office do these jacka$$es even own a calculator?

  8. Snowball says:

Well of course, for these privileged millionaires, the economy is just dandy. Anybody who holds a real job producing things of value are just losers in their eyes.

  9. DieNowForPeace says:

Faux Schnooz would know a thing or twenty about whining, wouldn’t they now?

  10. Namtillaku says:

Jimmy Carter was crucified over very similar comments. Another case of the pot meeting the kettle.

  11. Marie says:

I think we should all keep this issue alive for as long as we can. McCain is too rich and too totally out of touch with Americans. Gramm is McCain’s economic advisor, and best friend, for 25 years — now McCain says he will banish him to Belarus. hahahaha — oh, that McCain, he’s so witty.

  12. MapleStreet says:

the same superpower we always were ?

Except that our fuel supply belongs to the Mid East

Except that the dollar has weakened so that it is no longer the global standard

I know its Fox Fiction, but come on!

  13. prius04 says:

I think people are missing the point here. Gramm is exactly right when you understand his context. He, and Faux News, is referring to the Americans that matter, not the Americans who are just the “hired help” or “cannon fodder” for their wars.

Gramm is referring to the ruling class, the rich, the aristocrats. And lets face it people, he’s exactly right. THAT America IS thriving and everything is indeed hunky-dory.

The rest of us are just a bunch of whiners. And if more of us whiners would just watch Faux News, we wouldn’t whine so much and would hopefully just accept our lot in life which is to manufacture their products, clean their houses, fight their wars, and just vote Republican and keep our minds and mouths shut. Dittohead all the way. And just maybe if you’re really lucky (meaning your parents are rich) you too can grow up to be one of the Americans’ that people like Gramm work for and put in place laws for.

When you understand Gramm’s context, it makes perfect sense.

And what does this statement do to help people trying to pay for their skyrocketing gas price at the pump,or pay for medicine they cannot afford ?!!
People need to drive, and need medicine for themselves and their families.
This shows how much these people like Ghallager are disconnected from public.

They also have the nerve to call Obama an elite…

    laughable !!!

Mr. Ghallager : Quit eating Gramm crackers…!!

They stare for a time. The stare turns to a scowl

From the strain and the sweat of faltering minions below
A whine rising and ruffling the plutocratic peace
The plutocratificance are annoyed that minions whine
So ungrateful they are to spoil the plutocratic perfection
So very ungrateful theminions do not know their place

Have they not benefitted greatly from the genius of the Plutocrats
Benefitted many times over what they’ve earned

    Whining, indeed, how dare they

I know the Cheneys of the country watch this crap and lap it up as great propaganda, but at least part of the audience for this program must be scratching their nuts and thinking, “Huh? The bank done took my house and my car and I’ve got the wife working three jobs. And everything is OK? WTF?”

Or maybe not. Maybe they’re just nodding along thinking their lives are screwed up because they’re not trying hard enough.

  17. pete says:

Well gee. As long as the oil industry is collecting record profits we’re doing great. We’re 9 trillion dollars in debt. Home values have fallen 15% in a year. The dollar is so strong that Boeing is “offering foreign customers an option” to pay in Euros. Other nations are calling us “rogue” and “terrorists”. And, when food, energy, and devaluation of the dollar are included with the, bogus, core inflation rate? We’re running between 16% and 19% over the last two years.

But, as long as the oil industry is collecting record profits? Everything’s fine.

They love to pull economic indicators out of their ass to prove things are just peachy but the problem is that whatever wealth is being created stays mostly with the rich while real wages for working Americans are stagnating or worse.

  22. pbg says:

“But corporate profits are up!” is just about the worst thing a Republican can say during this election, and it’s a tribute to Phil Gramm’s unerring political instincts that he brought it up.

This is not “Are you better off than you were in 2000?” but “Will you survive four years of John McCain?”

  23. Keith says:

    johnsom says:
No wonder why (sic) you’re against eavesdropping on terrorists.

Since there are not many tens of millions of terrorists in the US, the Bush administration was wiretapping innocent Americans. They lied and said they were not. Bush said if they wiretapped on anyone without a warrant it would be ILLEGAL.

  24. Keith says:

It is perfectly possible for our GDP to be positive and for the majority of Americans to be suffering. It is because Republicans are giving the resources of the country to the big corporations and the wealthy. Wages for the average American are not keeping up with inflation. Worst economy since Great Depression.

  25. Hussein McCain says:

I get it, Gallagher. The watermelon is the world and the sledgehammer is the U.S. You’ve still got it, champ!

  26. stonehinge says:

What gives with these right-wing a$$holes. The economy is in worse shape than during the Great Depression and these fools absolutely refuse to recognize the problem. What is up with that?

  27. ricchase says:

Of course Mr. Gramm is an idiot. He has had Washington’s silver spoon shoved up his ass for over 30 years and is perfectly representative of the disconnect between career con-men (ex-politicians turned lobbyists) posing as knowledgeable spokesmen. There is nothing in this man’s time in the Senate or con-jobs he has pulled since leaving that remotely qualifies him to tell the American people what we should think or feel about the current dire condition(s). He is of course personally responsible for the mortgage mess due to his legislation in favor of allowing predatory lending practices. He’ simply another self serving, soul-less Washington insider that doesn’t know when to stay under that rock.

In any event, I really don’t care whose wiretapping who.

    Can’t count and doesn’t understand English . . .

Oy, it’s “who is wiretapping whom”. . . but, really, no one cares if you care. You’re (not “your”) irrelevant (not “er, elephant”).

Grammar and math lessons are free. It’s the liberal thing to do.

  30. ricchase says:

This link is to a story critiquing Mr. Gramm’s tenure as a lobbyist and associate at UBS, the Swiss banking conglomerate he has assisted in driving into the ground.

  32. republicanSScareme says:

Yes, quit your whining you weenies!

Get in line, click your heels and be good little Nazis like the hate-mongers on Fox News and in the Repugnant Party!

Henchforth, all whiners will be shot!

  33. Keith says:

And you probably really don’t care about habeas corpus. freedom of speech, right to a trial, right to an attorney, right to see the evidence against you, being sent to torture prisons, or the entire Constitution.

Bush said they did not wiretap without a warrant. He said if they did it would be ILLEGAL. But I guess you don’t really care about the law when your guys who are breaking it.

  34. pete says:

The problem our simple troll can’t seem to grasp is that they have tapped people without disclosure. When that list can include political and business rivals? The potential for abuse is immeasurable. If Bushco has nothing to hide they can damn well inform the proper agents of oversight.

See? That argument cuts both ways.

  35. Keith says:

johnsom says Small minds always resort to ad hominem attacks when they have no semblence of a cogent argument.

The argument is they broke the law. There is no denying it. Our Bill of Rights is there for a reason.

If you were an average reader, then you would know that “whose” is possessive and not a contraction for “who is”. and that subjective is “who” and objective is “whom”.

It`s not that bad if you are wealthy making money off of OIL speculation, outsourcing jobs, making third world country`s pay high prices for food that they once grew for their families or if you invest in Halliburton , KBR and Blackwater and any other
pro re-puke business you are ripping this country apart and you can`t see the forest for the trees. I forgot to mention making money off of sick people that need medical attention and RX`s, this kind of crap is not what America is about and it is disgusting……….

    BUCK FUSH………..

  38. shoeless says:

You know what is going on here, don’t you?

Look at these guys. I mean literally look at them.

Everyone of these fascist Republican wingnuts are pasty, doughy, wimpy, little white guys who got picked on in school, and couldn’t get a non-relative date to the prom.

    They hate everyone and everything.

They want to destroy the environment, because it makes them sneeze, and they couldn’t keep up with the rest of the troop during boy scout hikes.

They hate women, because they couldn’t get a non-relative date to the prom.

They went into politics just to fool and gain power over the high school jocks who used to stick their heads in toilets and lock them in their lockers.
