Ft. Bragg military wives to protest radical church’s celebration of pregnant soldier’s death.»

Recently, followers of Fred Phelp’s Westboro Church announced they were planning a “gospel picket” to celebrate the death of a pregnant soldier, 23-year-old Army Spc. Megan Touma. The fundamentalist church claims “war casualties are divine revenge for America tolerating gays and lesbians.” The AP reports that Ft. Bragg military wives are organizing to oppose Westboro’s “plan to celebrate the death of a pregnant dead soldier.” Westboro Church followers have protested against victims of the Minneapolis bridge collapse and picketed dozens of funerals with messages such as “Thank God For AIDS.”

Tell me: Is that what Jesus would do? Really?

  3. Leftside Annie Says:

Good grief. Those Westboro people are truly sick. Sick and evil.

Satyam, please correct the bolded word.

These people are just plain batshit crazy.

  6. pete Says:

Every time I see mention of those sick phucks I wonder “Do we take freedom of religion too far?” Personally, I don’t think they should be allowed to keep their children.

First of all, they’re all probably the product of incest. And second, what the Hell chance does a kid have at a healthy life when their parents have them picketing funerals in diapers?

  7. misshusseinmolly Says:

These people are so far out there that I doubt even our resident trolls would defend what they do. Does anyone besides me wonder where they get their funding to travel all over the country and harrass people? It’s a rather small congregation, and I doubt they are self-financed — especially since it appears none of their members has a regular job.

  8. Uncle Ho Says:

Phelps and his followers are sick, digusting motherphuckers.

  9. Bob Says:

I’m confused. Was she gay? Are they against war or just homosexuals? Are they celebrating the death of the unborn, too? Are they saying God approves of abortion, illustrated here through divine intervention?

Whatever it is, these are the religious fundamentalists we should be fighting.

  10. judyinnm Says:

I wonder how they react when some disaster befalls one of their own. I bet they analyze that person’s actions to find the reason he or she is being punished, and then celebrate their misfortune. I’m sure they worship a god who “loves” them.

Sounds more like a terrorist organization than a religion…..

  11. DieNowForPeace Says:

Phelp’s must have been viciously sodomized as a child.

    #####

Strange considering he is anti-gay, anti-abortion, and hates brown people. I thought that would put him firmly in the republican camp. Also considering his history of protesting against the Clintons, I figured he would be a right-wing hero.

  14. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Phelps is a true fundamentalist, just like terrorists, bush, and the GOP.

  15. belac Says:

They are truly a bunch of nuts, but don’t try to hold them out as representative of anyone other than themselves.

    Who else would they represent?
Oh, do you mean please don’t lump them in with the other religous right nut-jobs that the Republican’s have embraced?
Again, Jabber, thanks for being so ‘fair and balanced’
wouldn’t want people to get the wrong idea, would we?
I really ‘respect’ you and the work your doing for the RNC…
it must really be tough with all the nut-jobs on the right you have to insulate McCain from…

  16. misshusseinmolly Says:

Since they believe that our soldiers getting killed in combat (or murdered in hotel rooms), people dying on collapsed bridges, miners dying in mine disasters, etc. etc. is divine retribution for America’s alleged tolerance for gays — how do they rationalize God lashing out at mostly heterosexuals in His anger?

If this really was God’s agenda, wouldn’t He be attacking gays more directly?

I guess when you’re this sick, you don’t see any need to be rational.

  17. StratRat Says:

And second, what the Hell chance does a kid have at a healthy life when their parents have them picketing funerals in diapers?

“Diapers?”, says christian David Vitter, “I like diapers”.

  18. Uncle Ho Says:

DNFP; Phelps may have been sodomized as a kid, butt, he loved it.

  19. belac Says:

    Thanks Jabber,
I didn’t hear anyone blaming McCain or the RNC for Mr. Phelps’ lunacy but your eager deflection has shown your ‘fairness’ once again…
    Kudos on your ‘good’ work!

  20. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

Phelps has also stated that God hates Bill O’Reilly, Ronald Reagan, William Rehnquist and Jerry Fallwell

Phelps is just part of the majority of the planet on that notion.

I truly believe there are more than two ideologies in our society, and some of them are so bizarre that only a handful of lunatics would embrace them.

Phelps’ is one of them. He may be technically registered as a Democrat, but that doesn’t mean that the Democratic Party would accept him or his ideas, or be anything less than extremely appalled at his actions. Ditto for the Republican Party. See — they DO agree on some things.

If Phelps is a fundamentalist, what fundamentals does he go by? Certainly not those of Christianity. I don’t recall Jesus advocating anything close to what this group says and does.

  26. misshusseinmolly Says:

Has it occurred to these morons that if God is randomly flinging around His anger upon America because we refuse to deal with homosexuality by capital punishment, aren’t they afraid they may get caught in this net of doom?

I would think that Phelps and his family would want to leave this den of sin and go settle in Iran. After all, they don’t have gays in Iran — just ask Ahmadinejad.

  27. Klem Kiddilehopper Says:

IGNORE HIM! If he’s being ignored completely by the press, he’ll dry up and go away!

It may be awhile before our favorite performance artist comes up with material that can defend Phelps and his clan and still have a shred of believability about it. Phelps is so across the line that even the Darylls of the world find it hard to defend him.

It does seem a horrible way to live, doesn’t it molly? Living in terror that Jesus will smite them and send them to Hell if they don’t spread their disgusting hate. Lord knows wicked, stupid, people have twisted every religion known to Man, but Phelps’s ill gotten brood is one of the worst cases I know of.

  30. krazeeinjun Says:

Divine revenge to me would be hearing that a comet fell from the sky, wiping out the Westboro Baptist Church and all of it’s parishioners (sparing the innocent children of course) while they were in the midst of their hateful worship.

Hell, if that were to happen, I just might renounce my heathen ways and become a true believer myself.

    Just saying . . .

I sure am beginning to miss the days when kids played outside or, when older, had summer jobs. Heck! If they want to cause trouble why not throw rocks at abandoned buildings or spray-paint a wall? They might discover a hidden talent for art or baseball.

You should try being authentic, you’ll feel better and people will like ya more…

  37. ralph the wonder llama Says:

I have to admit the current crop of Concern Trolls are a little bit more adaptable than earlier species. In the past, a Concern Troll would just be a one-trick pony — no variation on the “this will make Democrats look bad and they should stop” gag.

This new generation, CTs like jabberjaw and Ray Edmonds, have begun to vary their approach to try to win trust and acceptance so as to make their concern trolling more effective. Perhaps with a little more maturity and patience, they can get to the point where they actually resemble real posters with complex opinions.

I doubt it, but it’s something for them to shoot for.

  38. pete Says:

I don’t think so ralph. A troll is a troll. Ray just lost his cool and went full attack on another thread and the jabbering one didn’t fool me for a second.

You hit the nail on the head, the concern trolls have adapted. It remains to be seen how long they can stay in this progressive mode, once they start getting consistently called out. The Edmonds troll has already reverted to name calling and accusing people of being Communists.

Not only that, but his source of funding appears to be winning lawsuits against those who attack him and/or members of his group. I’ve been scouring the net to find out where his money is coming from, and while I can’t find any “official” statement on this, the consensus seems to be lawsuits. That, and contributions from like-minded crazies who see him on the teevee.

So, to cut off his funding, we need to refrain from attacking/assaulting him, and certainly give him no publicity.

No attention, no lawsuits, no money, no Westboro Baptist.

  43. KingCranky Says:

There’s a very easy, satisfying way to get the entire inbred Phelps clan to wail and gnash their teeth, and possibly bite their tongue.

Simple plan, just have people pledge a certain amount of money for every minute the Phelps crew spews their vile swill, and make sure they know that the longer they bleat, the more money goes to groups absolutely sure to be on WBC’s enemies list, like gay-rights groups, especially those related to HIV prevention and treatment.

Then Phelps and family have to decide if their hate is worth indulging.

And considering the WBC actually publishes an itinerary, it shouldn’t be that hard to coordinate these kinds of campaigns across the country, wherever and whenever the Phelps spawn make an appearance.

Sadly, when the WBC was doing their thing only at the funerals of gays and HIV victims, the media had no problem with it. It was only when they started picketing and celebrating the deaths of US personnel in Iraq that the same previously-silent media suddenly found it’s rightful outrage.

The Dad has been stripped of his Bar Credentials, but the Daughters and Sons are the ones that bring on the lawsuits against just about anyone/anything that looks at them wrongly. AAAAGGGGhhhhh they infringed my freedom of religion. Mostly it is other organizations and local jurisdictions which cross thier path.

    #6 pete,
I could argue that these sick phuks are very representative, on a microcosmic scale, what has been happening to America. NO?

  46. curious Says:

The Westboro Baptist Church, is as so many churches are now, gross and unethical. They do and say anything in the name of God or Jesus. They actually have no real beliefs in anything except their own twisted idea of what it means to be righteous. And of course they never are.

They show up at military funerals causing pain toward those already suffering. And they claim they do it because of homosexuals in the military. Now mind you they don’t know who is or isn’t, so they just hit them all as a protest to the government that allow them to serve. It is that (Christian) kindness that punishes everyone for eveything that they believe constitutes SIN. And of course they know SIN. Because someone with the title Reverend or minister has interpreted the Bible for them. And someone the next church over interprets the Bible their way. And of course SIN never has anything to do with them. Why? Because they are doing God’s work on earth. And they know what God wants.

This is how it’s done in the land of nuts and wackos. They rely on a book called the bible. A book that is filled with hatred, violence, intolerance and war. What has caused more death and war then religion? Nothing. Let’s hear it for love and the milk of human kindness. Let’s hear it for these tellers of truth. Let’s applaud their christian values. Let’s bow to their intelligence and their rational, clear thought processes. We can only hope their idea of God holds them in good stead when they reach him. I do wish it were in my power to move them steadily closer to him or her.

If there were a God, or even the son of God, I would feel some pity for these barely evolved, barely civilized monsters of creation. Give me one of Darwins lower species any day. I have seen more kindness among the so called lower evolved animals then ever I have seen in religion as it is practiced world wide. Especially these cretins. And especially by the hypocritical religious right. Spare me religion. I will take my chances with the unknown afterwards. I have seen religion here, and the unknown is better.

I wish it were that these miserable Christians did not know better. But they do. They simply don’t care. Their lives are so empty and so without grace and love, that they have chosen to make as many suffer as possible. Perhaps they hope to rid themselves of some sin of their own. Whatever it is, they have chosen to throw the first stone and so many of the others. And they do it in the most cowardly way. Against those already dead, and against those families just trying to bury their own. They do it with glee and self satisfied laughter. They love giving interviews and being on film.

Good luck and my best to these Americans that come home to be with their families this last final time. I am sorry that in your familiy’s time of grief, you had to endure the meaness and cruelty of the Christian right haters. It would seem that after having given what Lincoln called “the last final measure,” that might entitle you to the respect and decency of a final goodbye. Thanks for your service.
