This morning, Karl Rove refused to appear before the House Judiciary Committee to testify about the politicization of the Justice Department, despite a subpoena. During the hearing, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) revealed that Rove had not only skipped out of the hearing, but had skipped out of the entire country. Watch it:
When ThinkProgress contacted Rove’s lawyer, his office confirmed that Rove was out of the country “on trip scheduled long before the subpoena was sent.” Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) said Rove’s attorney “never mentioned” this trip to the committee. Rove’s bogus claims of executive privilege were rejected by the Committee as “not valid” by a 7-1 vote. The committee gave Rove five days to comply with the subpoena.

How can Rove fly around and travel with a US Visa–isn’t he on Bush’s “terrorist alert watch list?”
July 10th, 2008 at 5:24 pmBush flipped the bird to the industrialized world this morning, KKKarl flipped off the US Congress this afternoon. Who will they schedule for tonights festivities? Rice buying shoes, or cheney getting stuck in his man sized safe.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:25 pmBy God you have five days before we send another letter!
July 10th, 2008 at 5:26 pmRove left the country?
Isn’t that kinda risky? I mean, what if someone overseas decides to charge him with war crimes? No “executive privilege” in France, I don’t think.
Oh, he went to Paraguay? That makes more sense.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:27 pmWhy is jabberjaw still around? He’s not even fun.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:31 pmRove left the country?
I thought the air was a bit sweeter….
July 10th, 2008 at 5:32 pmThe committee gave Rove five days to comply with the subpoena
WHY????
The dude received a subpoena to testify today, he didn’t show up.
ARREST HIM.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pmCan I write the stern letter? Please?
July 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pmK-K-K-areful Karl, some countries may arrest you as a war criminal.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:33 pmThis only the first of many to flee the Country in advance of criminal charges. Look for the Great Reunion in Paraguay!
For you WEB Griffin fans, however, have no fear. President Obama will just issue a modification to the Presidential Finding and Coronel Frade (Maybe I have him confused with Charlie Castillo) will render them all harmless. We can at least hope.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pmWhat difference did it make. They wouldn’t have done anything to him if he was still in this country.
In the end they will let Rove off the hook the same way they have let Bolton and Meiers off the hook. When is the last time you read anything about making them honor their subpoenas?
I’m kind of looking forward to the first time the Republicans subpoena a Democrat in the next administration. The Democrat can give them the finger and say “what are you going to do about it”. Unfortunately, unlike the Democrats, the Republicans are likely to actually do something.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:34 pmDear Karl Rove,
We, Democrats wish for you to testify on the matter of the politicized Justice Department. Which date would be most convenient for you to appear?
1st choice ___________________________________________
2nd choice ___________________________________________
I would not rather appear at all ( )
Please indicate your choice and we will make the proper accommodations for you.
Sincerely,
The House Judiciary Committee
ugh…
July 10th, 2008 at 5:35 pmI just had a thought. Do you think that if the tables were turned and it was Democrats defying the Republicans, that the Republicans wouldn’t use Inherent Contempt the first time it happened? I think they would.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:36 pmI didn’t know your schedule superceded a subpoena. Anyway, now he really looks guilty (not that he didn’t before). Wouldn’t it be ironic if he somehow became the subject of extraordinary rendition.
Would anyone donate to that collection?
July 10th, 2008 at 5:36 pmYa know, to most Americans, testifying before congress would be a distinct honor, but I suppose if you have no honor or integrity you try to weasel out of it.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:38 pmHow can you be expected to move to Paraguay with all of your cronies if you don’t go shopping for property first?
“Let’s see, W gets that plantation, Cheney gets that other one, Rummy gets that one over there and mine will be over here!”
July 10th, 2008 at 5:39 pmMemo to HJC: Why give this criminal five days? Arrest Tubby!
Now, you know if I resisted and thumb my nose to the HJC subpoena like McTreason Rove has done, HJC would have had me frogmarch to the pokey from the get-go. Karl Rove or any citzen is not above the law and his a$$ needs to be arrested.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pmThis is why it’s so easy to tag Democrats as spineless, because they are! They do not stand up for themselves, they let people walk all over them, and they act like some abused dog that you don’t even have to kick anymore; just threaten to kick them and they roll over.
I am so sure Rove is terribly frightened at the prospect of Grandpa Conyers sending him another letter.
Wake the hell up, Democrats! Act like you have a pair!!!
July 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pmGee, if KKK has left the protection of Bushitler, then some country can arrest him as a war criminal.
I love it!
July 10th, 2008 at 5:40 pmralph the wonder llama Says:
The committee gave Rove five days to comply with the subpoena
WHY????
The dude received a subpoena to testify today, he didn’t show up.
ARREST HIM.
I’m sure you all know that this is the SECOND subpeona KKKarl has ignored. And then to allow him five additional days to comply - that is rich. Got backbone?
July 10th, 2008 at 5:41 pmSomebody needs to check him for possession of a bogus Viagra prescription when he lands at the airport.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:43 pmKarl is currently in Sweden talking about his prowess at the Timbro think tank.
If this article (in Swedish) is to be believed, Karl is taking credit for Obama’s current electoral success - and is claiming that Obama has adopted Karl’s “own” methods of microtargeting.
Also funny to note, apparently Karl is on record as hating the Swedes. Bob Woodward wrote about it in his book “Plan of Attack” -
The Swedes actually asked him about this during today’s visit. And in typical Rove style, he denied it… “Woodward misunderstood.”
Yeah, right.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:44 pmThe House should seek an InterPol warrant for his arrest as a fugitive terrorist.
Nasty bugger. Hope they stick him in a crowded Turkish jail cell for a while.
- Mark
July 10th, 2008 at 5:45 pmSo, he cut-and-run (Tm). How typical of the reich-wing.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:45 pmThe trip was scheduled before the subpoena, but there was no need to let the committe know of the conflict since it’s not important enough to show up anyway. Wow.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:48 pmThat Karl, he’s one slippery flying pig.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:56 pmGee, where are all the trolls defending KKK Rove’s fleeing a subpoena?
Aren’t they always the ones saying that if you have done nothing wrong, you don’t need to hide anything?
July 10th, 2008 at 5:58 pmKarl Rove is the man. He left the country and all you Leftist whine hopelessly.
July 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pmLest we forget, in March, Rove said he fully EXPECTED to be indicted by te end of the year.
Maybe it’s CLOSE than we think.

July 10th, 2008 at 5:59 pmApparently, they’ve decided to take the approach that “Nyah nyah! You can’t catch me!”
They are a mature bunch, our trolls.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:01 pmRove is a TRAITOR to the USA, and deserves EVERY penalty that comes with TREASON (100+ counts) in “wartime”.
Let the ROASTING of the TREASONOUS PIG begin!
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/03/10/rove-iowa/
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:01 pmGod Bless Karl Rove. He’s stuck it to you Leftists again!

July 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pmArn Gunnutes,
July 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pmRove got away with it and your here crying! Your helpless!
Gee, where are all the trolls defending KKK Rove’s fleeing a subpoena?
They’re posting about how there are more procedures that need to be followed before Rove is really in contempt…
July 10th, 2008 at 6:02 pmSee, they just want to be ‘fair’… jabber, jabber, jabber…
Karl Rove is the man Says:
Cry progressives, cry! You can’t do anything!
ha ha ha!
We’ll just see about that.
Our wonderful GOP. Always putting party over country - always.
Tell me troll: Why would KKKarl have to run to Sweden just to avoid a congressional subpeona? Maybe he is the frightened one - along with you and those like you? Maybe?
Traitor.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:03 pmThe CIA should WATERBOARD him until je SQUEEEEALS like a STUCK PIGGIE, and gives up the TREASON of Bush and Cheney.
AMERICAN Justice…
July 10th, 2008 at 6:04 pmRove’s fleeing the country just proves what we all have known all along. He is a craven coward, just like Bush/Cheney.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:04 pmRove got away with and will. Nothing will be done. Just keep complaining losers!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:07 pmIN 5 days, whether or NOT he returns, Congress can issue a warrant for ARREST of this TREASONOUS PIG.
When he comes back, try his ass, convict him, and
Hang him HIGH!!
American JUSTICE!!
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:07 pmRove apparently announced to the Swedish audience that the White House has had people active on ‘blogs for some time to make sure that people get the ‘fact’s straight’ and that people are ‘fair’
July 10th, 2008 at 6:11 pmHmm…
Arn Gunnutes,
July 10th, 2008 at 6:12 pmNothing is going to happen and Karl Rove will be fine. Cry and complain. He got away with it!
He’s the man!
Rover is the man- it’s all about winning and losing, huh? Why do you hate Americky so much?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:14 pmHussein McCain,
July 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pmHe got away with it and nothing will be done! Ha ha!
Merely revoke his Passport. He can rot in Zimbabwe for the next 15 years.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pmWell, this latest specimen appears to align with the administration’s ideology, tactics and - especially - level of maturity.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:16 pmKRitM: It’s a real wonder that you can type with your pants around your ankles and your head up your asss.
I’m impressed.
Sorta.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pmComplain about Rove all you want, but there’s nothing Think Progress can do about it.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pmKarl Rove is the man Says:
Arn Gunnutes,
Nothing is going to happen and Karl Rove will be fine. Cry and complain. He got away with it!
He’s the man!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
He’s a little TREASONOUS coxucker PUNK, just like the MORON and MURDERER little silver-spoon TRAITOR coxucker PUNK Bush.
Rove SAID he would be indicted, and he’s the MAN, right?
Actually, “little pussy” will be his SLAVE name in prison, given to him by his MASTER and BUNGHOLE BANGER.
YOU, as a TRAITOR and supporter of TREASON against the USA, deserve the SAME.
Either way, you will ALL burn for ETERNITY for your GENOCIDE, TORTURE and SUPPORT of such.
Along with your MASTER Satan.
And TRAITOR Ronnie Reagan, now DEAD and BURNING for ETERNITY.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:17 pmWaltTheMan,
July 10th, 2008 at 6:18 pmThink Progress doesn’t run America. The Corporation do. Rove is connected and the Democrats who are Corporate owned will do nothing.
America is ruled by Corporations and there’s nothing you losers can do.
Rover, sociopaths sure do admire other sociopaths. Have fun playing with yourself.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pmArn Gunnutes,
July 10th, 2008 at 6:19 pmKeep complaining loser. Raegan is a beloved to most Americans. You are part of a tiny fringe.
God Bless ronal Reagan.
Memo to the rest of the world:
Get Karl Rove.

July 10th, 2008 at 6:21 pmMemo to Keith, ain’t happening!

Can you cite a source?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:22 pmGod Bless Karl Rove. Anyone who gets the Left angry I admire.

Someone with better ‘googling’ skills then I may be able to find out from the Swedish media if this is the case for “reals”…
July 10th, 2008 at 6:24 pmWhy no further action?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:25 pmBecause Bush can just pardon him.
If, however, they wait and indict Karl Rove AFTER Bush leaves office, he’s got no escape.
Even if Bush pardons him for ‘any and all crimes he may have committed while in the performance of his service to the nation,” as Ford did for Nixon, that won’t save him from going to jail for things like this in 2009.
He has to be on the worlds ten most wanted list.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:26 pmI say we put up a handsome reward for any country that captures him, …. or alive.
Karl Rove is the man Says:
Arn Gunnutes,
Keep complaining loser. Raegan is a beloved to most Americans. You are part of a tiny fringe.
God Bless ronal Reagan.
DEAD and BURNING for his GENOCIDE and TREASON against the USA.
REAL Americans know Reagan was a TRAITOR to the USA.
Just like the 70 YEARS of Bush TREASON will put THEM with their MASTER Satan.
Just like YOU…
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:26 pmSo, when the a**hole returns to this country, will the State Department, Border Patrol, Passport Police or the vaunted TSA arrest him and confiscate the passport? Good Luck.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pm“Keep complaining loser. Raegan is a beloved to most Americans. You are part of a tiny fringe.
God Bless ronal Reagan.”
Does anyone have a troll to English dictionary?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:27 pmKarl Rove is not a man
July 10th, 2008 at 6:29 pmNote to TP.
MODERATE YOUR PHUCKING SITE OR SHUT IT DOWN!!!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:29 pmLock him up. He’s a treasonous jerk.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:30 pmRep Cannon was speaking for Rove today, however after Jan 20,2009 nobody will give a rats ass what he says! Cannon lost just his seat in a primary runoff in Utah!
July 10th, 2008 at 6:32 pmSo Rove flees the country after lying about executive privilege. Sounds like a clear admission of guilt to me. It’s funny though, I didn’t think sociopaths experienced guilt.
http://progressiveworldreview.com
July 10th, 2008 at 6:36 pmpete Says:

MODERATE YOUR PHUCKING SITE OR SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Agreed…The trolls should not be able to disrupt the post with their nonsense comments and insults. That is not why most of us read TP, and we also have other choices. Please make a note of that.
TP: Do something about it please….
July 10th, 2008 at 6:38 pmKarl Rove is the man- is that what he makes you say before he slips you the sausage?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:39 pm@ CitiDC
Here’s a more reputable link (In Swedish, though)
The headline reads something like, Bush advisor to Sweden: “Target Blogs”
http://www.expressen.se/ nyheter/ fra-lagen/ 1.1223853/ bush-radgivarens-tips-en-bloggstrategi
July 10th, 2008 at 6:44 pmAnyone read Swedish?
July 10th, 2008 at 6:45 pmWe fail to understand the gravity of this situation or the great damage that has been done to this country because of the gutless action of the Democrat Party.
1. The rule of law is paramount in establishing a free and democratic society. If the law may be ignored by those who are powerful or those in certain governmental positions, then any constitutional provision, statute or other check on the use and abuse of position by the powerful will be ineffective.
2. The constitution, bill of rights and the separation of power into three co-equal branches is the essential linchpin envisioned by a system of check and balances to prevent any one branch from overwhelming the other two branches.
3. A democracy can only survive as long as the electorate can have a transparent view of the actions of its elected representatives and officials. Investigations by the Congress are essential to providing such transparency into the actions of the executive branch.
This Democrat Congress has utterly failed in its responsibilities to the people of this country. How many subpoenas and subpoenas duces tecum have been issued by investigative committees? How many times has the executive branch failed to seriously impose sanctions upon those refusing to testify or produce documents. It could be inherent contempt. It could be impeachment of cabinet officials. It could be cutting off funding to certain departments or the White House until there is compliance. However, the gutless, girlie boy actions of this Congress in issuing subpoenas and then folding like a yellow coward has gone too far. Stern letters and speeches have long since lost meaning. It would be better to just stop the investigations and subpoenas and leave it to a new congress with real men and women as opposed to demonstrating the absolutely spineless behavior that we have seen.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:50 pmGoogle’s translation of part of the article…
July 10th, 2008 at 6:51 pmRove avoids subpoena by fleeing the country.
I suspect obama will have to do the same pretty soon.
July 10th, 2008 at 6:57 pm@77 belac
Thanks.
Here’s an interesting tidbit. Rove and Bush are apparently still in regular touch - every few (four?) days. Rove says so himself in this interview on Swedish TV.
Now we know that Rove was apparently “fired” by Bush in a church, yet Bush can’t seem to be without him? Very curious. Surely, talk of the subpoena came up…
Here’s the TV clip (happens near 2:51)7
July 10th, 2008 at 6:59 pmRoz, go back to beauty school.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:00 pmI see our rozerze troll has downgraded his arguments to wishful thinking.
Probably wise, since the whole struggling-with-logic thing wasn’t really working.
And he never even went near the “fact-based” type of argument.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:02 pmOh, please, you citizens of whatever country this turd shows up in. Arrest his pasty ass and ship him freight prepaid, on me, to Den Hague for his war crimes trial!
July 10th, 2008 at 7:04 pmInstant Karma, Congress. Rove must be laughing his ass off right now. Don’t expect any repercussions from snubbing the subpoena for Rove. It’s a toothless, corrupt Congress. After the 5 days are up, Conyers will give him another 5 months.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:06 pmralph the wonder llama Says:
truth hurts, doesn’t it, even in exaggeration.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pmJMOHR, as usual, NAILS it.
Flagrant contempt.
Addington growled and seethed.
Yoo played semantic word games and flat out bullshitted his way through his testimony.
Rove says F U. What are you going to do about it?
They are going all-in on every hand now and stealing the pot because NO ONE has the balls to call.
Pathetic. Tragic. And still somehow surprising, every time.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:07 pm“Truth hurts”? Sure couldn’t tell it from one of your posts, roz. Truth has obviously been giving you a wide berth for a long time.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:15 pmThrow him in a pit with 200 vicious dashounds, that will show him.
Yip, yip, yip, arf, arf, arf, snarl, bite….
Brings a funny picture to mind.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:19 pmBuckie, who’s barking and biting, Rover or the ‘hounds?
July 10th, 2008 at 7:27 pmrobbez_92107 Says: “…W gets that plantation…”
I apologize for picking your nit but in Paraguay that would be “Estancia.”
July 10th, 2008 at 7:27 pmParaguay isn’t remote enough to keep the Idiot in Chief from causing misery. My guess is that the brains of the GOP will hire a venomous snake or insect to seal the leak. Or they’ll just have Dick take him on a hunting trip.
Either way, he’s a liability to people who still think they can ride out the storm. Even if Karl plans an effective escape, I don’t think his own people will let George die of old age. Unless they play the obvious card and have him diagnosed as a paranoid wacko, incapable of rational testimony, and serve him up to a World Court.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:46 pmBTW, when first reading this story, did anyone else think “dry run”? I mean, why would Chimpy’s long time friend decide to take a trip on the day of his testimony? Perhaps a little test of Homeland Security? I wonder if Karl changed on the plane or wore his dress to the hotel?
July 10th, 2008 at 7:50 pmHA ! HA!
July 10th, 2008 at 7:51 pmWill someone please close the door of the TV room?
Troll John Kerry is in there watching cartoons and he can get distracting with his outbursts.
July 10th, 2008 at 7:54 pmJohn Kerry Says:
You sad, sad, pathetic little troll.
July 10th, 2008 at 8:01 pm“Old” trolls. “New” trolls. It looks like the RNC raised their rates. And TP’s moderator left early.
Very disappointing.
July 10th, 2008 at 8:08 pmrozerze Says:
Rove avoids subpoena by fleeing the country.
I suspect obama will have to do the same pretty soon.
Actually, that would be TRAITOR Bush.
And when he does, he needs to be HUNTED DOWN like the TREASONOUS dog he is…
July 10th, 2008 at 8:37 pmThey should hold that vote now, and the Sergeant at Arms needs to be waiting at the arrival gate whenever Karl decides to come back.
July 10th, 2008 at 8:40 pmAny chance we can use this to deny Rove re-entry into the USA ? Does the country he is in have an extradition treaty with the USA ?
Could it be France and they arrest him ?
July 10th, 2008 at 9:04 pmActually, this was a screw up by Congress. They could have ginned up an order forbidding him the option of leaving the country. They missed that. They can now issue a directive forbidding re-entry.
July 10th, 2008 at 10:44 pmSorry Walt, Congress can’t do what you wan’t. That would be an Executive function (i.e. the White House). All Congress can do is vote to hold Rove in contempt in accordance with its inherrent contempt powers, issue an order to the Sergeant at Arms to arrest him. If that were to happen now, it would be really good to see if he ever comes back. If he did not, he would then invite the comparison to Benedict Arnold. I say that if that’s what he wants, more power to him.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:41 amCan’t you see how brave Karl is. He left the safty of the USA and can now be arrested for War Crimes in most any country. I wonder if his trip is terminating in South America. Wouldn’t it be a kick to see Karl perp walked into a Rome Police Station!
July 11th, 2008 at 2:57 am.
This is about the Rule of law.
You either respect it and the Republic for which it stands, or you don’t. NO?
Sanchez is correct! Rove via his Lawyer should have communicated to the Committee his
escape abroad for‘vacation’.THIS DID NOT HAPPEN!
It Was an outright and blatant contempt when the lawyer issued the ‘denial to appear’ papers This only underscores the contempt all that much more.
.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:59 am.
How’s Karl supposed to stand up to the terrorists…
If he can’t stand up to a committee?
.
July 11th, 2008 at 3:01 amLook on the bright side. Maybe he won’t come back ;-)
July 11th, 2008 at 4:44 amPut a ’small’ reward for his arrest and return!
Won’t have to be much, there are a lot of headhunters
looking to make a name for themselves!
As for the demo’s, they have been insulating themselves
July 11th, 2008 at 11:44 amby over-capitulating to the ‘Pugs for years, so there is no chance they will ever have to fear being a subject of a subpoena. All the demo’s will have to worry about is being ground into musch and sold as pet food.
One can only hope he went somewhere where they can arrest him and try him for war crimes…..
Cheers,
July 11th, 2008 at 2:40 pmrover has to return someday, afterall he needs to cut the grass on his 800 square foot cabin in Texas that he claims as residence. Illegal voting needs to be addressed as well.
July 11th, 2008 at 3:05 pmOK….then, don’t do anything with this guy until the new administration gets in so that Bush won’t pardon him. If that happens, we can’t do anything, and he’s off the hook. Let Bush leave, and we’ll can clean up properly with no pardons.
July 11th, 2008 at 5:28 pmLOL… Craven coward would be redundant. Than again calling Rove a cowardly coward, does have a nice ring to it.
I too wish the Democrats where more assertive across the board. However whenever they are, the general ignorance of the public, has them sympathetic to the Republicans when they start wining about the Democrats being bullies.
July 12th, 2008 at 12:19 amI bet ya Rove will stop by at The Bohemian Grove
to Party with Old man Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Lieberman, The PNAC criminals, Ken Lay, and The other “Chosen Ones”!
Like George Carlin said:
July 12th, 2008 at 3:42 pm“It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it. You and I are not in the big club.”
Forget Karl Rove. I want to know where Dov Zakheim is. Over $2.3 TRILLION of taxpayers money went missing from the Pentagon under his watch. Rumsfeld publicly announced the missing funds on 9-10-2001, the day before 9/11. Dov was officer of a corporation that makes remote controls for really big planes, like the ones that flew into the Pentagon (the accounting department, by the way) and into the WTC. Where are you Dov??? You got some ’splainin to do.
July 13th, 2008 at 2:31 pmLove how we have a bunch of Democrats screaming for a arrest fo rthis man, which in my mind does deserve it, yet when we have a democrat committing crimes or other such illegal activites we should look the other way.
July 21st, 2008 at 8:29 am
