Rove avoids subpoena by fleeing the country.

This morning, Karl Rove refused to appear before the House Judiciary Committee to testify about the politicization of the Justice Department, despite a subpoena. During the hearing, Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT) revealed that Rove had not only skipped out of the hearing, but had skipped out of the entire country. Watch it:

When ThinkProgress contacted Rove’s lawyer, his office confirmed that Rove was out of the country “on trip scheduled long before the subpoena was sent.” Rep. Linda Sanchez (D-CA) said Rove’s attorney “never mentioned” this trip to the committee. Rove’s bogus claims of executive privilege were rejected by the Committee as “not valid” by a 7-1 vote. The committee gave Rove five days to comply with the subpoena.

UpdateSanchez indicated she was unlikely to hold a contempt vote until late this month.
UpdateMarcy Wheeler astutely notes that Bush did not, in fact, invoke executive privilege for Rove.

  1. Above the Clouds Says:

How can Rove fly around and travel with a US Visa--isn't he on Bush's "terrorist alert watch list?"

  2. StratRat Says:

Bush flipped the bird to the industrialized world this morning, KKKarl flipped off the US Congress this afternoon. Who will they schedule for tonights festivities? Rice buying shoes, or cheney getting stuck in his man sized safe.

  3. rocks911 Says:

By God you have five days before we send another letter!

  4. ralph the wonder llama Says:

    Rove left the country?

Isn't that kinda risky? I mean, what if someone overseas decides to charge him with war crimes? No "executive privilege" in France, I don't think.

Oh, he went to Paraguay? That makes more sense.

  5. Fred Says:

Why is jabberjaw still around? He's not even fun.

  6. Zooey Says:

    Rove left the country?

I thought the air was a bit sweeter....

  7. ralph the wonder llama Says:

The committee gave Rove five days to comply with the subpoena

    WHY????

The dude received a subpoena to testify today, he didn't show up.

    ARREST HIM.

  8. moondancer Says:

Can I write the stern letter? Please?

  9. Badmoodman Says:

K-K-K-areful Karl, some countries may arrest you as a war criminal.

  10. Crusty Old Bastard Says:

This only the first of many to flee the Country in advance of criminal charges. Look for the Great Reunion in Paraguay!

For you WEB Griffin fans, however, have no fear. President Obama will just issue a modification to the Presidential Finding and Coronel Frade (Maybe I have him confused with Charlie Castillo) will render them all harmless. We can at least hope.

  11. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

What difference did it make. They wouldn't have done anything to him if he was still in this country.

In the end they will let Rove off the hook the same way they have let Bolton and Meiers off the hook. When is the last time you read anything about making them honor their subpoenas?

I'm kind of looking forward to the first time the Republicans subpoena a Democrat in the next administration. The Democrat can give them the finger and say "what are you going to do about it". Unfortunately, unlike the Democrats, the Republicans are likely to actually do something.

  12. ucsbclassics53 Says:

    Dear Karl Rove,

We, Democrats wish for you to testify on the matter of the politicized Justice Department. Which date would be most convenient for you to appear?

    1st choice ___________________________________________
    2nd choice ___________________________________________
I would not rather appear at all ( )

Please indicate your choice and we will make the proper accommodations for you.

    Sincerely,
    The House Judiciary Committee

    ugh...

  13. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I just had a thought. Do you think that if the tables were turned and it was Democrats defying the Republicans, that the Republicans wouldn't use Inherent Contempt the first time it happened? I think they would.

  14. Bob Says:

I didn't know your schedule superceded a subpoena. Anyway, now he really looks guilty (not that he didn't before). Wouldn't it be ironic if he somehow became the subject of extraordinary rendition.

Would anyone donate to that collection?

  15. RobertSeattle Says:

Ya know, to most Americans, testifying before congress would be a distinct honor, but I suppose if you have no honor or integrity you try to weasel out of it.

  16. robbez_92107 Says:

How can you be expected to move to Paraguay with all of your cronies if you don't go shopping for property first?

"Let's see, W gets that plantation, Cheney gets that other one, Rummy gets that one over there and mine will be over here!"

  17. SP Biloxi Says:

Memo to HJC: Why give this criminal five days? Arrest Tubby!

Now, you know if I resisted and thumb my nose to the HJC subpoena like McTreason Rove has done, HJC would have had me frogmarch to the pokey from the get-go. Karl Rove or any citzen is not above the law and his a$$ needs to be arrested.

  18. Colony of Birchmen Says:

This is why it's so easy to tag Democrats as spineless, because they are! They do not stand up for themselves, they let people walk all over them, and they act like some abused dog that you don't even have to kick anymore; just threaten to kick them and they roll over.

I am so sure Rove is terribly frightened at the prospect of Grandpa Conyers sending him another letter.

Wake the hell up, Democrats! Act like you have a pair!!!

  19. Uncle Ho Says:

Gee, if KKK has left the protection of Bushitler, then some country can arrest him as a war criminal.

    I love it!

I'm sure you all know that this is the SECOND subpeona KKKarl has ignored. And then to allow him five additional days to comply - that is rich. Got backbone?

Somebody needs to check him for possession of a bogus Viagra prescription when he lands at the airport.

  22. CitiDC Says:

Karl is currently in Sweden talking about his prowess at the Timbro think tank.

If this article (in Swedish) is to be believed, Karl is taking credit for Obama's current electoral success - and is claiming that Obama has adopted Karl's "own" methods of microtargeting.

Also funny to note, apparently Karl is on record as hating the Swedes. Bob Woodward wrote about it in his book "Plan of Attack" -

Page 250: Karl Rove, a Norwegian-American, is obsessed with the “historical duplicity” of the Swedes, who seized Norway back in 1814. This nationalism manifests itself as hatred for Swedish weapons inspector Hans Blix.

The Swedes actually asked him about this during today's visit. And in typical Rove style, he denied it... "Woodward misunderstood."

    Yeah, right.

  23. leveymg Says:

So, he cut-and-run (Tm). How typical of the reich-wing.

  25. Bob Says:

The trip was scheduled before the subpoena, but there was no need to let the committe know of the conflict since it's not important enough to show up anyway. Wow.

Rove SAID he would be indicted, and he's the MAN, right?

Actually, "little pussy" will be his SLAVE name in prison, given to him by his MASTER and BUNGHOLE BANGER.

YOU, as a TRAITOR and supporter of TREASON against the USA, deserve the SAME.

    Why no further action?
Because Bush can just pardon him.
If, however, they wait and indict Karl Rove AFTER Bush leaves office, he's got no escape.
Even if Bush pardons him for 'any and all crimes he may have committed while in the performance of his service to the nation," as Ford did for Nixon, that won't save him from going to jail for things like this in 2009.

  72. JMOHR Says:

We fail to understand the gravity of this situation or the great damage that has been done to this country because of the gutless action of the Democrat Party.

    1. The rule of law is paramount in establishing a free and democratic society. If the law may be ignored by those who are powerful or those in certain governmental positions, then any constitutional provision, statute or other check on the use and abuse of position by the powerful will be ineffective.

    2. The constitution, bill of rights and the separation of power into three co-equal branches is the essential linchpin envisioned by a system of check and balances to prevent any one branch from overwhelming the other two branches.

    3. A democracy can only survive as long as the electorate can have a transparent view of the actions of its elected representatives and officials. Investigations by the Congress are essential to providing such transparency into the actions of the executive branch.

This Democrat Congress has utterly failed in its responsibilities to the people of this country. How many subpoenas and subpoenas duces tecum have been issued by investigative committees? How many times has the executive branch failed to seriously impose sanctions upon those refusing to testify or produce documents. It could be inherent contempt. It could be impeachment of cabinet officials. It could be cutting off funding to certain departments or the White House until there is compliance. However, the gutless, girlie boy actions of this Congress in issuing subpoenas and then folding like a yellow coward has gone too far. Stern letters and speeches have long since lost meaning. It would be better to just stop the investigations and subpoenas and leave it to a new congress with real men and women as opposed to demonstrating the absolutely spineless behavior that we have seen.

  73. belac Says:

Google's translation of part of the article...

That got his team behind Bush during his years in the White House, he says to newspaper Dagens media.
We worked actively to follow and comment on what was written in bloggosfären in political issues which we proriterade. The idea was that a couple of people with us went in and commented on matters of substance and in a proper and lågmält tone on various blogs, "says Karl Rove.
2006, we worked for the first time aggressively against bloggosfären in the debate on how immigration policy should be reformed. According to Karl Rove devoted to the U.S. government only to "factual information":
A politically inflamed debate with high uppskuvat tone, we gave us never enter, When someone bloggers, for example, wrote that "the authorities should start to arrest people and send them back across the border," our people went in and wrote "In the last year tillfångatog, arrested and authorities seized a total of 1.3 million people then were deported to the country." "says Karl Rove to today's media.

  75. CitiDC Says:

    @77 belac

    Thanks.

Here's an interesting tidbit. Rove and Bush are apparently still in regular touch - every few (four?) days. Rove says so himself in this interview on Swedish TV.

Now we know that Rove was apparently "fired" by Bush in a church, yet Bush can't seem to be without him? Very curious. Surely, talk of the subpoena came up...

Here's the TV clip (happens near 2:51)7

Rove: We’re (Bush and I are) going to have lunch next week. We stary in touch. We’re talk every few days. I see him every few weeks for lunch.

Unless they play the obvious card and have him diagnosed as a paranoid wacko, incapable of rational testimony, and serve him up to a World Court.

  87. pete Says:

BTW, when first reading this story, did anyone else think "dry run"? I mean, why would Chimpy's long time friend decide to take a trip on the day of his testimony? Perhaps a little test of Homeland Security? I wonder if Karl changed on the plane or wore his dress to the hotel?

Any chance we can use this to deny Rove re-entry into the USA ? Does the country he is in have an extradition treaty with the USA ?

Could it be France and they arrest him ?

  94. WaltTheMan Says:

Actually, this was a screw up by Congress. They could have ginned up an order forbidding him the option of leaving the country. They missed that. They can now issue a directive forbidding re-entry.

  95. greggp Says:

Sorry Walt, Congress can't do what you wan't. That would be an Executive function (i.e. the White House). All Congress can do is vote to hold Rove in contempt in accordance with its inherrent contempt powers, issue an order to the Sergeant at Arms to arrest him. If that were to happen now, it would be really good to see if he ever comes back. If he did not, he would then invite the comparison to Benedict Arnold. I say that if that's what he wants, more power to him.

  96. mdillard Says:

Can't you see how brave Karl is. He left the safty of the USA and can now be arrested for War Crimes in most any country. I wonder if his trip is terminating in South America. Wouldn't it be a kick to see Karl perp walked into a Rome Police Station!

    THIS DID NOT HAPPEN!

It Was an outright and blatant contempt when the lawyer issued the 'denial to appear' papers This only underscores the contempt all that much more.

to Party with Old man Bush, Nancy Pelosi, Joe Lieberman, The PNAC criminals, Ken Lay, and The other "Chosen Ones"!

    Like George Carlin said:
"It's a big club, and you ain't in it. You and I are not in the big club."

  106. escapefrombushistan Says:

Forget Karl Rove. I want to know where Dov Zakheim is. Over $2.3 TRILLION of taxpayers money went missing from the Pentagon under his watch. Rumsfeld publicly announced the missing funds on 9-10-2001, the day before 9/11. Dov was officer of a corporation that makes remote controls for really big planes, like the ones that flew into the Pentagon (the accounting department, by the way) and into the WTC. Where are you Dov??? You got some 'splainin to do.

  107. Dragon Says:

Love how we have a bunch of Democrats screaming for a arrest fo rthis man, which in my mind does deserve it, yet when we have a democrat committing crimes or other such illegal activites we should look the other way.
