African-American staffer sues DOJ for discrimination and harrassment.

Joi Hyatte, a veteran African-American employee in the Justice Department’s embattled civil rights division, is suing the agency for subjecting her and other African-Americans to “numerous forms of discrimination and harassment.” The Tri-State Defender reports:

The suit, filed May 29 in U.S. District Court in Washington, alleges that supervisors used special hiring programs to circumvent regular procedures and avoid giving African Americans on staff an opportunity to apply for analyst jobs.

Hyatte, a 13-year veteran of the department who received outstanding evaluations, says in the suit that she was “repeatedly denied the opportunity to apply and compete” for promotions because she is African American.

We need to hear from our candidates for president and for Congress on what they intend to do with the Department of Justice. The Department will have to be purged of career civil servants that were hired during the Bush administration in violation of federal law and deparmental regulations. Anything less would simply perpetuate a right wing, anti-democratic cabal within the department. It would also justify resort to such tactics in the future.

Add the fact that she is female, probably a Democrat, young (reverse discrimination, and probably numerous other factors that should not be discussed nor considered and you have a clear picture of bushco in action. “If you ain’t one of the Good Old Boys you can sent your soul home to momma ’cause your ass (figuratively and literally) belongs to me.”

It’s also interesting that you felt the need to identify her supervisor’s race…
Does being a ‘Latina’ insulate her in some way from her repeated statements that she didn’t trust African-American employees to work ‘diligently and honestly?’
Tanner is also named in the suit, why didn’t you mention his role?
Is he too white?

There will be more cases of discrimination and harrassment from the civil right division of the DOJ. Amazing. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other civil right activists that are dead and gone will roll over their grave to see what has happened to the Justice Department and treatment of minority federal employees.
