In an article for Mother Jones, Laura Rozen reports that there are “significant factors weighing against prospective Israeli military action on Iran before the Bush term ends.” “My sense is the Pentagon would be worried or opposed to an Israeli attack,” says David Wurmser, former Middle East adviser to Vice President Dick Cheney. But, according to Wurmser, an Israeli attack against Iran is still more likely than not:
“Even beyond the question of whether McCain or Obama wins, the Israelis are afraid that no new administration is really going to be able to get its act together quickly to be able to mobilize a plan and do something,” Wurmser said.
Wurmser put the odds of Israel striking Iran before Bush leaves office at “slightly, slightly above 50-50.”
60-60?
July 11th, 2008 at 6:30 pmIf they do that (criminally attack a nation which has never hurt us) oil will rise to $200-225 a barrel. It is about $145.00 a barrel today. That increase would presume the Iranians would not close the gulf to shipping traffic.
If Iran retaliates against Israel, the cost per barrel would be well over $300. That would create a price of $8-9.00 a gallon. Is that what we want to do? All for Bush’s vanity and sense of revenge?
The people putting us at war are rich. The people wanting us involved in more wars are rich. The people fighting the war are poor. The citizens paying for the war are getting hammered every day. Please remember this when your politician speaks to you about money. The only ones clamoring for more war are the ones who will benefit the most by that war.
Do you feel cheated yet? You should. Your government does not speak or work for you.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:38 pmIsrael is afraid that Sen. Obama will follow true intel. There isn’t a damn reason to attack another country that’s not a threat to the US or to Israel.
An attack to slow down anythings in another country is just warmongering.

Scary barstids. I think we ought to lock *them* up where they can’t hurt anyone else.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:40 pmAnnie, I trust the term “big” is used metaphorically.
I suspect one reason these people are so into war-making is because of self-consciousness about the size of their “little German soldiers”.

July 11th, 2008 at 7:07 pmSo my question to Israel is, what’s the hurry. Iran is not threatening you. It will be 10 years or more before they have a bomb, if they really are trying to build one.
So Israel thinks it’s a good idea to blow up the middle east. Why is that. What will they accomplish? Whose going to gain when Iran closes the Straits of Hormuz? The oil companies, that’s who. So, how much do you think the American oil companies have offered Israel to do their dirty work?
God Congress, please put Bush/Cheney under articles of impeachment. That is the only thing you can do now to stop this disaster. I don’t think Israel will attack Iran if Bush/Cheney are stuck under articles of impeachment. The only reason why they would attack in the first place is because they are sure we will ride in like the calvary and defend them. If they know that we will not be there to back them up, they won’t attack.
To the Democrats in Congress. It’s in your hands now. DO SOMETHING.

Israel wants to be the ONLY modern city in the Middle East with their McDonalds, Starbucks, and Sbarro’s. They want you to think that Iran is full of unisex dressed men walking around with Ak-47’s chanting “Death to the West!!!”

July 11th, 2008 at 8:26 pmIsrael might defend itself with a preemptive strike.
And the opec oil spigot could suddenly turn down, forcing americans to pay even higher prices at the pump.
This is also not news.
July 11th, 2008 at 8:32 pmbarfly. Higher gas prices might prompt even more conservation and a greater emphasis on alternatives.
Less consumption is better for the environment and alternatives might reduce our dependancy on foreign oil.
Those aren’t bad things.
July 11th, 2008 at 8:35 pmNoob17.
What do you see as a consequence of an Israeli strike?
July 11th, 2008 at 8:36 pmbarfly. Higher gas prices might prompt even more conservation and a greater emphasis on alternatives.
I’ll play.
Higer prices will hit the poor hardest, who can little afford any more “conservation,” as it is.
It will also make transportational (and product) costs skyrocket, further exacerbating the problems of the poor, and the working poor.
Less consumption is better for the environment and alternatives might reduce our dependancy on foreign oil.
It will also cause municipalities to curtail vital services (especially for the poor), such as fire, ambulance, rescue, emergency-relief – even forcing cops to stop pursuing some types of lawbreakers, because of the scarcity of gas.

Barfly, are u suggesting that the world let Iran develop a nuclear bomb so it can wipe Israel off the map just so that the supply of oil is not disrupted? Let Israels die for cheap oil? Harsh dude. Very harsh.
You obviously haven’t been playing this game very long, so I’ll show grandmotherly kindness, and take it easy: Israel has little to fear from a nuclear missile from Iraq, because of the geography of the region. Find a map, and measure how far a nuclear strike on Israel would spread radioactive fallout in the surrounding area. Be conservative: say, three hundred miles, on a good windy day. Where does that fallout spread to? All muslim countries. These Persian Shia would be making permanent sunni arab enemies.
C’mon, man reason it out.

I meant “Iran.”
July 11th, 2008 at 8:56 pmNoob17.
It’s a problem either way.
barfly. I agree the poor would be hit the hardest. But, there is a disconnect in our desire for energy independence and a healthier environment (both more likely realize with higher oil prices) and our calls for cheap gas.
We can hope for the best in Iran, but obviously (regardless of what happens there) we need some realistic energy plan that gets us away from the scenerios that you and RUCerious bring up.
July 11th, 2008 at 8:56 pmThe odds of Israel attacking Iran are “slightly, slightly above 50-50.”
Translation: the odds of Israel, at the prodding of the war-mongering Bush Administration, attacking Iran and unleashing a bloody Mid-East conflagration, which will likely be the catalyst for the start of World War III is “slightly, slightly above 50-50.”
Impeach now.
Just saying . . .
July 11th, 2008 at 8:59 pmThat happens.
Here’s the thing. The U.S. is divided. We can focus on the divisions, or we can become united in a universal cause.
Environmentalists on the left want less emissions. Security junkies on the right want reduced dependance on foreign oil. Everyone is tired of sending dollars to the middle east.
All these goals can be realized with a comprehensive energy plan that stresses conservation, innovation, and focus on alternatives, (maybe nuclear, hydro, wind, domestic exploration, etc).
It is an opportunity to stop the partisan fighting. Get compromises from all sides and do something that will make our country stronger and the planet cleaner.

July 11th, 2008 at 9:39 pmDisregarding the idiocy of hinging an attack by one country on another country on our election, what influence would impeachment have on that decision? Granted, impeachment is about as likely as Iran actually following through on an idle threat like wiping Israel off the map (abstract ramblings how long ago?), but there is this from pensitoreview.com:
Yesterday, Speaker Pelosi signaled that an Article of Impeachment charging Bush with lying to Congress about his pretexts for invading Iraq might at least get a hearing in the House Judiciary Committee.
What if they set the table?
July 11th, 2008 at 9:49 pmI think they’d secretly bomb Iran and then ‘retaliate’ for Iran’s retaliation. I doubt it’ll happen, but it would be quite a wild card.
fantastic! let israel remove iran’s evil dictator, ahmedinejad. purhaps when they are done, israel can help us remove our evil dictator, dumbya bush. ahmedinejad and bush can burn in hell together. also, i hope the iranian oil reserves get destroyed in the process…it will only create further incentive to switch to a hydrogen or EV economy
July 11th, 2008 at 10:06 pmWho says Iran is developing a nuclear weapon? 27 (was that the number) US intelligence agencies say Iran quit developing nuclear weapons in 2003. Their uranium enrichment program is monitered by the IAEA and at last report they have only enriched to around 4%, not enough yet even to provide fuel for their power plant (which btw is a light water reactor), let alone anywhere near the 80% enrichment required for a bomb. I think that so long as Iran allows inspectors to moniter their uranium program there is no good reason to even be considering a military option.
July 11th, 2008 at 10:25 pmDoes anyone here really think the gangsters that have taken over the White House really care if We the People are priced out of oil? After robbing our treasury, they, along with their have mores have enough funds to make a new life, and besides aren’t we just a bunch of whiners anyway?
If Pelosi would obey the law and begin impeachment proceedings maybe we could get somewhere. And the Constitution does state that while a sitting president is going through impeachment and/or is convicted he can not pardon others. Could an impeachment hearing last thru 1/20/09 until the day Obama is sworn in? Would these thugs be able to illegally attack Iran while going thru impeachment?
July 11th, 2008 at 10:26 pmAn attack in Iran will be for purely political reasons–the neocons are going to make it impossible for President Obama and the Democrats to govern. They will need to spend almost all of the next four years fixing Bush’s messes as it is. Throw in a feverish GOP obstructionist agenda and a Republican Party spirally down the drain and it will really be a big mess in 2009.

That’s a simplistic fantasy, given recent history.
Conservatives and libertarians have never accepted the concept of “a shared sacrifice for the common good.” The bootstrappers would leave less-fortunate Americans vulnerable to the depredations of “capitalist” ideology, regardless of circumstance, and believe in a “sink-or-swim” individualism that lumps the priviledged with the poor, in a “winner-take-all” battle for supremacy.
“Bipartisanship is date rape,” after all.

While it is unlikely that Tehran would launch a direct atomic assault on the Jewish state, it would acquire greater leverage over its Arab neighbours as the undisputed hegemon in the Gulf, and could pass on nuclear know-how to its guerrilla proxies.
Ah, George Bush’s old buddy, “could.” Where would he be without out him?
This uncorroborated “could” stuff, just doesn’t have the hysterical lift it once did, especially knowing Israel could nuke them six ways to Saturday, with a single, badly-considered Iranian launch.

July 11th, 2008 at 11:36 pmbackup, do you read your own links?
He said the agency had seen no evidence that Iran was trying to “weaponise” nuclear material, or of undeclared nuclear facilities in the country.
Last week Mr ElBaradei angered the US, Britain and France by saying the western strategy of denying Iran enrichment capability was obsolete because the country already had it.
He added that world powers should focus on capping Iran’s enrichment short of “industrial scale”, at a level he felt would pose minimal risk of yielding atomic bombs.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:43 pmKnowing that Condoleza Rice has proclaimed that if Iran attacks anyone the USA would not sit idly by.

July 11th, 2008 at 11:45 pmwhat a phony excuse to start a fakeass war. A country might have nukes so we will kill them so when they eventually get nukes they will remember our forward thinking diplomacy? It’s more gunk from chimpy. And the repug msm is reporting about bitter and britney AGAIN.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:54 pmThe problem with the spiegel article is that the uranium enrichment program they worry over and we are so hot to shut down is being monitered by the IAEA. Should the Iranians enrich beyond what is required for fuel for their reactor, we will know. If any of it is unaccounted for, we will know. If the Iranians kick the IAEA out, then we can worry. In the meanwhile this is all BS for purposes which have absolutely nothing to do with Iran being a threat.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:55 pmSorry folks, but 9/11 hysteria doesn’t obscure the geopolitical truth. “Technology” — and especially “nuclear technology” — is a bottle-less genii; and the emotionally-charged term, “nuclear proliferation,” is simply the newest patronistic form of “white man’s burden” symbolism.

If Cheney/Bush hadn’t screwed up the Iraq occupation so bad, we’d probably would be on Chapter 4 of the PNAC plan and we’d have our New American Century where everyone loves us and we’d be getting our gas for $.25/gal. Oh well, the Republicans screwed the pooch on their delusional dream to turn the Middle East into America’s filling station.
But they’ve got some more pressing problems that concern them now. There is nearly 4 month’s left, if the voter’s wern’t lazy, they could pick another candidate, use the internet and vote in masses for a better candidate for president…
I gave the dem’s over 45 year’s and will not give them one more…I am picking another, better suited person to write in or vote for..It will be one of the following, Kucinich, Nader or Mckinnet(sp)..I refuse to vote for a traitor to the constitution and my country…..Blessings
July 12th, 2008 at 2:27 amI believe experts say Israel has 250-300 nukes (more than France). Many could be on subs directly off the Iranian coast. Iran knows this and is not suicidal. At the same time, Iran needs a deterrent to prevent a US or Israeli strike.
If Iran is struck by the US or Israel, I believe all the Iraqi Shiites held back by al-Sistani will be released on our troops there. And Americans will be lucky if they can buy a tank of gas!
July 12th, 2008 at 4:55 amralph the wonder llama Says:
And still no one has a strategic reason for Iran to attack Israel?
Still nothing but, “but what if”?
What would Iran possibly gain by such a strike?
You won’t get an answer because their isn’t one. Israel wants to push them into the sea. Israel couldn’t care less about the country…it’s not theirs. See what happens when a country opens their arms and accept other people?
July 12th, 2008 at 5:55 amAs often as they’re meeting, U.S. officials should clearly know what’s on their Israeli counterpart’s minds. Either that, or they’re planning something together.

July 12th, 2008 at 8:34 amZed Lefflin Says:
Yeah and if someone I knew in the neighborhood (if I really had a neighbor with 300 yards) and, and had one say he was going to come over and shoot my house up, as a Democrat, I would not believe it for one minute. I know bad things only happen on TV and in the movies, not in real life. That Amadinajahadi guy is such a kidder. Wasn’t he a finalist in last years “last comic standing” TV program?
July 11th, 2008 at 10:26 pm
Problem is, the police has searched the nome of that neighbour and hasn’t found fire weapons. Plus, police has been following the guy and his family, and they haven’t bought a fire weapon. The neighbour hasn’t police record, because he has NEVER wounded anyone but a burglar who entered his house to kill him (Saddam). In the other hand, you have a police record for multiple homicides, assassinations and rapings. Guess who will believe the police.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:17 amonoclea. I had to go last night, but I read your posts.
This makes sense to me. I also hope the sentiment that the israeli strikes are just rhetoric for political consumption and not a serious consideration.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:27 amWho is going to go to the UN and tell them that Iran has nukes and we know where they are…..how would the world respond to an attack against Iran by Israel without UN support of some kind.
Colin powell used 9/11 sympathy to sell his pack of lies.
The UN currently has 150 sanctions against Israel. They are the real problem as we already know.
July 12th, 2008 at 9:49 amLOL! Do it, do it! This would be awesome in many ways: I take the subway to work, so $10 gas won’t bother me; the gold and silver bullion that I’ve been accumulating (and I know that the rest of you have been accumulating gold and silver bullion, right? Right? LOL…) will go to the moon; Israel will be attacked, one way or the other (a blown-up bus in Tel Aviv is just as deadly as a missile fired from Iran); and we’ll finally get to have riots here–GOP and Christian Right members will have targets on their backs. SO GO AHEAD, CHIMPY AND ISRAEL–bomb Iran. Keep hitting the hornets’ nest with your bat, you five-year-olds–see what happens….
July 12th, 2008 at 9:50 amListen to the words of this NEGRO-
July 12th, 2008 at 5:56 pm“It is the natural consequence of a government faced with the problem of trying to preserve the facade of democracy before its citizens while waging imperialist war abroad, plundering the public treasury at home, and supporting reaction whereever it can be found. To maintain the myth of American righteouseness, the government has no other recourse except to LIE. Indeed, lying becomes the central political behavior of the state… White politics seems to prefer the known evil to the possible unknown good. In the face of the greatest mass of criminal evidence ever assembled against a political figure, White politics and White people sit DOE-LIKE, almost hypnotically subservient to BIG BROTHER.” William Strickland, December 1973. What is wrong with you Caucasian people? Why are you bootlicking these Israeli Askenazi Jews while your own country falls apart? Have you not learned from the past (Lavon Affair, USS Liberty) to see that these people are playing you for folly? Pollard, Hanssen, the list goes on. They steal the secrets and boom! Over to Israel so they can undermine you folks here. But don’t mind us negroes. We’ve seen hard times before, and like the saying goes “We will survive.” I don’t know about you folks though. And for you bible thumpers, read Revelation 2:9- “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich)and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are JEWS, and are not, but are of the synagogue of SATAN.” Ask yourselves, Why is there a national Holocaust Museum in the US but no apology for Afrikan slavery that built this country, them forced to watch you flag-wavers EVERY Fourth of YOUR Lies? You folks get what you deserve, real negroes are laughing at your arrogance. Attack IRAN and you will really learn what we have gone through- PAIN and SUFFERING!!! By the way Obama is no help either, bootlicking Israel already and damning his own people. I ain’t voting to the Electoral College for this SAMBO negro. What a sell-out. DEMOCRACY? Give me a break.
50/50! My favorite stat! I think I’ll double down…
July 12th, 2008 at 6:11 pmNeoCons really do want to kill this country. I used to think they were just mistaken. It’s much worse.
July 12th, 2008 at 7:40 pmActually this is just a last minute sales tactic to keep oil at sky high prices so Big Oil can clean-up/cash-in before the new President takes over . . .
It would be hard to believe that Israel – as crazy as they may be – would float a big one in their own punch bowl . . . it would unleash a World wide backlash and the U.S./Israeli sympathy meter would not even bump . . .
. . . so we just have a Dick C pimp pumping up the fear factor to keep oil rising . .
. . and by the way: how come we are paying the SAME price for the American OIL drilled in U.S. wells as we pay fro Saudi Oil shipped ALL the way here???? jis wonderin . . .
