Following Iran’s missile tests this week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) slammed Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) position on the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, declaring, “This is the same organization that I voted to condemn as a terrorist organization when an amendment was on the floor of the United States Senate. Senator Obama refused to vote.” CNN’s Political Ticker notes a flaw with McCain’s attack:
The problem with the critique? McCain also missed that vote on the Kyl-Lieberman amendment on September 26, 2007. Records show that Obama was in New Hampshire and McCain was in New York instead of being in the Senate chamber for the vote in question.
Indeed, McCain — the most absent Senator — has missed more than 60 percent of the votes in the 110th Congress.
I am not now, nor have I ever been, against anything that was ever unpopular.

July 11th, 2008 at 11:04 amDementia is on the march…
July 11th, 2008 at 11:05 amMcHypocrite…
July 11th, 2008 at 11:06 amWell, alrighty then, Gramps. Put down the rock, old man, your glass house is full of BIG holes.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:06 amThat putrid stench of conservative desperation is growing again… OR… McCain has more early signs of Alzheimers.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:12 amAAAAaaarrrrrggggghhhhhh! The Department of Energy should wrap Abraham Lincon’s body in magnets, then wrap his casket in more magnets and copper wire. The resulting generator will create enough electricity to power the Entire State of Illinois, ’cause Lincon’s spinning at Supersonic Speed! The Entire Republican Party should get down on their knees and apologise to the spirit of Lincoln! Look what they’ve done to his party.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:12 amMcInsane Outdoes himself, once again! What does he have to do before his lunacy Finally hits the MSM radar? Lord, please let one his embedded reporters ask the wrong question, causing him to snap and assault said reporter. Maybe then the MSM will Finally slip into reality mode.
Impeach Pelosi, cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!
Hurry January 20th, 2009, and Save My Sanity!
Where is the media on this issue? We have seen this type of duplicity from the McCain camp on numerous occasions. Yet, the media has failed to raise any question as to McCain’s veracity. McCain lies about his past positions as do his surrogates. McCain receives a tough question and blatantly avoids answering or simply declines to discuss. McCain makes things up such as support from veteran’s groups. Any democrat would be pilloried and called a liar. Remember Gore on exaggerating? Remember Kerry on flip-flops? Here there is silence. Obama should make it clear that access to his campaign and presidency by reporters will be based in part on whether there is a visible partisanship by the press. He should tell them if the press is willing to vie for seats on the McCain “Straight Talk Express” by currying favor that he will have no choice but to take that into account.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:12 amAbsent minded would lead to being absent. Now if he could only lose his way back home. Songbird izza cumin’, hides da chillens!
July 11th, 2008 at 11:15 amAnd to think I always thought that George Bush was the real Chance the Gardener. ” In the garden, growth has it seasons. First comes spring and summer, but then we have fall and winter. And then we get spring and summer again.”
July 11th, 2008 at 11:17 amMcCain meant Liberman was there…
July 11th, 2008 at 11:18 amAnd that’s enough !
If he lies about this how do we know if he’s telling the truth about anything?
July 11th, 2008 at 11:21 amShayne, that’s easy: He’s not.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:28 amShayne Says:
If he lies about this how do we know if he’s telling the truth about anything
– - The upside to dementia and Alzheimer’s is that every previous experience is new to you again. In McCain’s addled mind he isn’t lying. he’s straight-talking every day.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:32 amAnd the so-called media says:
So What! He’s an awesome griller, a former POW, talks straight, and we love his sense of humor. He’s like my Grandpa!!!!
This man can say what the hell he wants and noone, NOONE will EVER call him out PERIOD!!!

July 11th, 2008 at 11:41 amDoes it seem to anybody else that Grampy has a couple of mischievous interns working for him, and they get their jollies by feeding him stupid things to say and then giggling behind his back when he actually goes out there and says them in public?
They’re still with the campaign probably because the press never calls McSame on his bullshit and everyone else on the staff has lost interest.

Well let’s all vote for him folks! Then we can bomb bomb bomb Iran after we sell them lotsa cigarettes. Then we can THINK ourselves out of the mentally induced recession. Perhaps he beamed himself to the Senate floor to make that vote and nobody noticed because he so quickly beamed himself away. He’ll lose it totally one of these days and let’s hope it will be before the Republicans cheat him into the Presidency.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:53 amWe may be off calling McGeritol’s campaign a race for a third Bush term. The way he is acting makes it look more like a third (post-Alzheimer’s diagnosis) Reagan term.
July 11th, 2008 at 11:58 amWatch the MSN “forget” to challenge McCain on this “funny bit of wit” . . . wat’ta POS.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:01 pmY’know, it just struck me — maybe, since dumping the “Third Bush Term” meme on Obama failed so spectacularly, McSame is trying to escape its clutches by running for Reagan’s Third Term — the one where he was suffering from full-blown Alzheimers.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:06 pmOf course, this is obviously psychological projection tinged with a touch of possible senility (depending on whether you think it is faulty memory or intentional deception).
But why are the sheeple so gullible that they will swallow these statements hook, line, and sinker and ignore any follow-up on facts later. If nothing else, voting records are easily available on the internet.
The laundry list is long: Obama is a Muslim terrorist. The Chinese are drilling off our coast. Caribou hold their coffee klatches next to warm oil pipelines……
July 11th, 2008 at 12:07 pmNo one should be surprised. The is the Republican strategy and it’s ALWAYS successful. They lie in the soundbites and leave it to blogs like this that only “the choir” reads. So the lie gets on the 11 o’clock news and the correction is only seen by progressives. This is the same tactic used when McCain incorrectly claims that Obama will raise taxes on the middle class. This is the same tactic used when McCain says that Iran is training al Qaeda.
To counter this, Democrats and progressives must use their own truthful soundbites and NOT DEFENSIVELY. Tell the truth about McCain. Obama must say daily that McCain spoke out against the Webb GI bill and introduced a competing bill. Obama must say daily that McCain’s health insurance solution would not cover birth control. Obama must say daily that McCain’s economic plan will either sacrifice Social Security and Medicare or raise payroll taxes to pay for them. These are truths as powerful as McCain’s lies.
July 11th, 2008 at 12:22 pmDoes this ignorant dooshbag ever pay attention to what he says?
July 11th, 2008 at 12:47 pmit’s not just a “slam” – it’s a LIE.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:04 pm.
McTORTURE couldn’t even show up to usurp our Fourth Amendment Rights… Like NObama.
.
July 11th, 2008 at 1:07 pmHe must have meant that he “thought” about voting for it.
July 11th, 2008 at 2:23 pm(sigh!)
Mccain or Obama equals the same thing. More bullshit.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:36 pmMeals on Wheels McCain is grabbing at straw. He is trying desperately to find scrape through dirt to put Obama in a negative light. Now is Obama’s abset voting? LOL! Hello? Wake up Gramps. You missed the voting on healthcare and FISA. If I were McCain, thank god I’m not, stay away from the issues of voting. McCain looks more clownish everyday.
July 11th, 2008 at 6:54 pmMcCain implies that Obama doesn’t think Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps is a terrorist organization. That’s wrong. Before the Kyl-Lieberman amendment was introduced, Obama cosponsored a bill that called for the IRGC to be designated as “a Foreign Terrorist Operation.” Obama was one of 72 cosponsors of the Iran Counter-Proliferation Act, which states (in part):
Iran Counter-Proliferation Act: The Secretary of State should designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a Foreign Terrorist Organization … and the Secretary of the Treasury should place the Iranian Revolutionary Guards on the list of Specially Designated Global Terrorists under Executive Order 13224.
Sounds to me like the name straight talk express wasn’t John’s idea. He doesn’t know what straight talk is.
July 11th, 2008 at 9:55 pmLet alone the truth…..
Did Obama or any Democrat call McCain on this? Or did they, as usual, let his lies go unchallenged?
Republicans will continue to win elections based on lies and perception as long as the lies go unchallenged in THE SAME FORUM that they are aired.
I am very glad for resources such as Think Progress and Media Matters and more for educating me on the lies and truth in the world of politics. But most voters don’t bother to dig any further than the headlines on CNN or their local news. And all they saw on these venues was McCain’s lying sound bite.
Democrats need to offer their own truthful sound bites and not let this grave misinformation go unchallenged.
