As Arlington National Cemetary’s director of public affairs, Gina Gray “pushed vigorously” to give journalists increased access to the funerals of U.S. soldiers, defying Pentagon efforts to keep the media out of earshot and photo range. A few weeks after the Washington Post first noted efforts, she was demoted and eventually fired. Today, the Post reports that Army Secretary Pete Geren has asked his staff to review Gray’s case. Gray responded that she is “definitely encouraged by any investigation into the mismanagement at Arlington Cemetery.” (HT: Karen Tumulty)
Regardless of who is president at the time, it shows a great deal of disrespect to a fallen soldier to have the public barred from seeing his funeral, even when it’s captured in photos published the next day. It is even worse to punish those who try to fulfill the family’s wishes to make it public. Arlington National Cemetery belongs to all of us, and if a fallen soldier’s family wants us to see their hero’s funeral, then the government has no moral right to say refuse.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:02 pmI hope that Ms. Gray gets reinstated. It’s disgusting that this maladministration continues to do everything in its power to keep Americans from seeing the real results of this illegal war, and, in doing so, refuses to honor the fallen.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:05 pmWhy does the Army hate our soldiers?
July 12th, 2008 at 1:24 pmI expect this “investigation” is just another game of kick the can. The truth will not out. If it would, we’d see a report stating that Ms Gray offended the King and that that is not tolerable here in the land of the thieving aristocracy and home of the critically immune.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:29 pmIt’s amazing what publicity and a law suit can change.

July 12th, 2008 at 1:33 pmI doubt that this ‘review’ will change anything. There will only be more stooges with more ribbons on their chests & more stars on their uniforms saying more ‘important military stuff’.
Hoo, boy. I can’t wait for the evening news.
July 12th, 2008 at 1:35 pmThe family’s wishes are paramount. All she sought was “clear and concise guidance” on media coverage. No government distrusting its own people this much can claim to speak for them.
By the way, it’s “cemetery.”
July 12th, 2008 at 1:47 pmIs this the same army that hasn’t prosecuted any of the Haditha killers?
“Reviews” are a good way of cooling the heat off without doing anything.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:13 pmThis is Cheney’s brain child. He and his ilk of the military industrial war monger establishment – from the days of Nixon/Vietnam learned well. If you want to profiteer from the war and the spoils of war – you must conceal from the minds of the citizenry – that for the elite war is a cash cow and a vehicular motif to astounding profits and riches – for the common folk it is a high speed meat grinder of torn flesh, broken bones/mutilated limbs, and a blood bath for their children exclusively to the benefit of the corporatocracy.
If the Vietnam War had been better managed – that conflict too could have been an endless money pit and gravy train for the war monger establishment.
Diversion, deception, concealment, contrived targeted propaganda, and highly refined perception management of the attentions of the populous is key – so the war mongers/war profiteers can gift themselves with obscenely profitable and endless wars.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:21 pmHonesty = Trickery = Democracy = Bu$$hCo FASCISM.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:26 pmWhy does Chimpy’s Army hate the families of our fallen soldiers?
July 12th, 2008 at 2:35 pmDon’t hold your breath. The Army will “review” it and find that it was correct to fire her.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:37 pmFrosty Cupcake Says:
Is this the same army that hasn’t prosecuted any of the Haditha killers?
Actually, I’m pretty sure they prosecuted them. Unfortunately they found them all “not guilty”.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:39 pmBHB,
According to the Newsmax e-mail alerts I get (which I get just so I can see how the right-wing is smearing the truth), the charges were being dropped against many of those Haditha soldiers because the investigation was so badly done that no one thought they would be able to get any convictions. Of course, Newsmax has been treating this as total vindication of the soldiers and as proof of their innocence. It is not.
July 12th, 2008 at 2:46 pmI predict she gets her job back sometime on the afternoon of 1/20/09. Then again, I have always been an optimist.
July 12th, 2008 at 5:13 pmI am not holding my breath.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:06 pmI think Bilbo has nailed it — there will be an investigation and the Army will determine their decision was correct the first time.
July 12th, 2008 at 6:14 pmSee how l;ong you can hold your breath on this one?
July 12th, 2008 at 8:50 pmThey’re reviewing right alongside the action report from the Little Bighorn battlefield. They’ll get back to us.
