Martinez Ignores McCain’s Immigration Reversal, Calls Criticisms ‘False,’ ‘Shameless,’ ‘Unfair’

Yesterday, during a campaign conference call discussion of Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) new ad on immigration, Sen. Mel Martinez (R-FL) praised McCain for “standing tall” on comprehensive immigration reform throughout the primary. He also declared Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) criticism — pointing out that McCain has since disavowed his former position — as “false,” “shameless,” and “unfair”:

And I think the ad wonderfully highlights what is really the straight story on Senator McCain and immigration. Far from him running away from the issue during the primary, as it is falsely and shamelessly claimed, in fact, [McCain] stood tall during that time. … In the meantime, what I think is terribly unfair, and I will not stand idly by and let happen, is for [Obama] to trash Senator McCain’s record on comprehensive immigration reform. Senator McCain was for it during the primary. He was for it now. And he will be for it when he is president.

In fact, McCain himself has admitted to the “shift” in his position, calling it “a lesson learned.” What’s more, during the Jan. 30 primary debate, McCain admitted that he would no longer vote for the very immigration bill Martinez today insists he “stood tall” for “during the primary.” Watch it:

Strangely, Martinez also used the call as an opportunity to bash Obama, who he declared “was AWOL” during the immigration debate. Yet as Politico’s Ben Smith notes, Martinez praised Obama for “standing firm” in support of the bill in a June 2007 letter:

“While it failed, your backing of this important legislation meant a lot to me personally,” Martinez wrote. “I know that standing firm in the face of extreme pressure has not been easy, and again, I thank you.”

Not surprisingly, none of the three questions posed to Martinez asked him about his reversal.

whoa… ask and you shall receive. thanks!

but, right off the bat, i’ve got a bone to pick:

    better headline:

Martinez Ignores McCain’s Immigration Reversal, Calls Obama’s Criticisms ‘False,’ ‘Shameless,’ ‘Unfair’

i’m detecting an aversion on TP’s part to promoting the presumed Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama…

    or am i?

Martinez is moron plain and simple. Read a bit about his politics and reach your own conclusions

Is he a fox guy? They know fair /snark

  4. barfly says:

Both McCain and Obama are now in San Diego, individually speaking to the national council for La Raza, and I’d imagine Martinez’s comments were for their consumption, since they are the largest Latino organization in the country.

More shameless lies from the Repubs.

  6. misshusseinmolly says:

Spin too much, and you just get dizzy. I suspect that’s happened to Mel Martinez. He no longer knows the difference between “standing firm” and “AWOL”. Nor does he recognize that McCain’s reversals (whether they are merely for political expedience or genuine “lessons learned”) are already out there for all to see.

Lying is hard work — you gotta keep track of it all.

What pisses me off about this is that the Right Wing Media (I will no longer call them the Main Stream Media since they ceased to be that the day they jumped uncritically on McCain’s bandwagon) will report what Martinez said as news. They won’t question anything he said.

I heard an excellent idea the other day. Obama should set up a place on his website where he debunks every one of these lies told by the McCain campaign. Then he should constantly publish the link to that page telling people to go there to see the truth. The site should be updated daily.

  8. Badger says:

As far as stoping the tide of illegal immigration….America’s tanking economy will do more than a fence ever would.

Obama was leading in the Florida polls. Fox news and the other Rabid Immigrant bashers have worked their magic.

Since when did McBush NOT flip flop on any stance? He’s taking meds for the whiplash.

Rachel is subbing for Keith this week on Countdown. She also pointed out many flip-flops McCain did this week that the media was quite on. The one that bothered her the most was the lie he told in Pittsburgh about the Steelers defensive line. In McCain’s book on page 191, I think she said, while McCain was a POW he quoted the GREEN BAY PACKERS Offensive line as the men he was with in his unit. Not the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I agree with her, this is a big deal because most of his campaign is about his Service Record in the Military and his time as a POW. He lied to make himself look good because he was in Pittsburgh. She even replayed the tape of the interview he did there. Rachel was surprised that Obama didn’t nail him on it.

Me, I think it would make a great campaign ad. One sound bit after another of each of his flip-flops including the dates so people truly see that most of them happen the very next day. I agree with you Bilbo, the site would have to be updated daily if Obama’s website incorporates that into the mix.

TP is just playing word games. At the end of the day, Obama, McCain, Bush, the MexicanGovernment, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce all want the exact same thing. The only differences are slight and mostly involve how they’re going to get what they all want. As for not voting for his own bill, bills are a dime a dozen and constantly change. McCain wouldn’t vote for “his” bill due either to those changes that others made or due to the bill itself proving incredibly unpopular. For the latter, he came up with a new, dishonest tactic to get the thing that Obama, McCain, Bush, the MexicanGovernment, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce all want.

Ahh, the joys of living in Florida.

    *sigh*

  13. Saint Augustine says:

Yeah Frosty isn’t it just great here now? A gay governor willing to marry just to be eligble for the Veep spot and a Senator who lies about any issue to pander to the party.

I can just see Florida under a McSame presidency, border guards at I-10, I-75 & I-95 gateways to check your ID. Of course we will already know you are on your way and if you don’t have a proper conservative background and sufficient funds you can’t come in. You won’t be able to come to Florida until after 2/3 of the state is submerged from rising ocean levels and all the conservatives have moved to the Riveria of the Tundra, Cicely, Alaska.

  14. dasm says:

No wonder we all get sick of Repubs- they are shameless, dishonest liars. They can’t remember from day to day what they said– the true proof of a liar. Tell the truth & it’s so easy to remember what you said. Tell a lie– & you never really recall your comments.

  15. Exit Stage Left says:

When soon leave Florida for Ohio, a$$wipe Martinez is one of the things I won’t miss.

  16. Jess Wonderin says:

This makes it very clear – now my poor brain can understand McCain:

It is not dementia, pandering or flip-flop – it is a daily reversal of position “to stand tall on the fact that he was wrong YESTERDAY but what he say here in Pittsburgh, Oxnard, Mayfield (insert city) is the true course and position that will never change.”

Anti-Medicare, slashes Social Security, votes against education, votes against child care, votes against Veterans issues, votes against women’s issues, votes against black issues . . . all in the PAST and his 95% VOTING record of SUPPORT the Bush Agenda doesn’t count . . .sheeeesh . . . Mel is a Bovine Burrito, looks “Latin” but full of BS . . .
