Bush backs Israel’s plan for strike on Iran.

The Times of London reports that President Bush “has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official”:

Despite the opposition of his own generals and widespread scepticism that America is ready to risk the military, political and economic consequences of an airborne strike on Iran, the president has given an “amber light” to an Israeli plan to attack Iran’s main nuclear sites with long-range bombing sorties, the official told The Sunday Times.

Amber means get on with your preparations, stand by for immediate attack and tell us when you’re ready,” the official said. But the Israelis have also been told that they can expect no help from American forces and will not be able to use US military bases in Iraq for logistical support.

“This administration will not attack Iran. This has already been decided,” the official stated. But the offical added, “I know he doesn’t believe that anything but force will deter Iran.”

Encouraging another nation to attack Iran is no better than attacking them ourselves. I do not believe for one second that we will not be involved in any such attack, especially if Bush denies it. I warned my Congressman, John Hall, that if they did not remove Bush and Cheney from office, we were going to end up in a war with Iran. He looked at me like I was crazy. Who’s crazy now, Johnny?

  4. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

This is a real problem for us. I don’t think that Israel would attack Iran if Bush had not promised that we would be there to defend them when Iran strikes back. Bush has to do it this way because the top brass in our military has told him that they won’t follow his orders and attack Iran. Bush is betting that they will agree to attack Iran to “protect” Israel.

I say if Israel is stupid enough to attack Iran, then tell them they are on their own. There is no reason why we should get involved. Iran has done nothing to us. They are in no way a threat to us. They aren’t really a threat to Israel either. Other than some stupid bellicose statements by their President (who has nothing to do with their military), Iran has been a peaceful neighbor.

Not very surprising. The White House’s propaganda campaign laying the groundwork for military action against Iran dates back over six years—to Bush’s 2002 State of the Union address in which he designated Iran as a founding member of the “axis of evil.” Since then, this drumbeat has waxed and waned as other concerns—primarily the disastrous invasion and occupation of Iraq—have often commanded center stage. Now, with the Bush administration approaching its final months in office, a renewed push and a shorter fuse are increasingly evident. My 3-minute online video entitled “Forewarned is Forearmed: Bush on Iran” offers a brief but deeply troubling chronicle of the president’s public warmongering and demonization of Iran. It’s available HERE.

That would stop war with Iran. Anything short of that will not do IMHO.

I think that they are talking about 2 million people in the first week or so. After that, it is all a matter of how the wind blows. (Literally.) Upper limits seem to round out at 25 million living people. Birth defects are a separate issue as the amount of uranium hexafluoride gas involved has never been released into the atmosphere in a single incident.

  16. Freedom Rebel says:

“Pro-Israel interests have contributed $56.8 million in individual, group and soft money donations to federal candidates and party committees since 1990.”

That buys alot of sympathy from both parties, including Bush. IMHO, I think we should cut them loose. They can stand on their on two feet. They have the finest fighter pilots in the world. Thanks to the training they received in the US. They are technically the fourth strongest country in the world. Let’s just cut the apron strings.

We can not be dragged into another war, especially not this one. There is no need to attack Iran. We are stretched so thin now, they would have to start up the draft. Of course, if we had a real diplomat instead of Condi this probably wouldn’t be an issue.

I had to uninstall the latest Microsoft update when my ZoneAlarm security program wouldn’t let me access the Internets Tubes. That’s the only reason I can think of that the links on the RIGHT side of the front page of ThinkProgress are overlaying the top of the news reports on the LEFT side of the page. It looks like a separate window that can’t be moved, and I can’t read the text. When I open up a permalink on the page, or read the older posts page, it all goes back where it belongs.

    Anyone? Anyone?

Bush’s immaturity never ceases to disgust me.

He truly is a boy who has learned to manipulate the system to get whatever he wants, no matter how immoral, reprehensible or just plain wrong.

Bush wants Iran to be attacked, so he will do whatever he wants to make it happen – even if it meaning pushing his snot-nosed little brother forward, giving him a big stick, and saying “Go ahead and whack the bees’ nest. They’re probably going to sting you next week, so you’re justified. Whack away. Dad would be proud.”

  19. Gregor Samsa says:

I don’t know what in the world makes the Israeli government they can undertake an attack of this scale on a rival the size of Iran.

Their attack on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, a much weaker and smaller foe, was not exactly a resounding success and left Hezbollah standing, possibly strengthened, in Southern Lebanon.

Perhaps Israel trusts that the tacit threat of an American retaliation is enough to keep Iran from fighting back. I am afraid both the US and Israel are miscalculating their opponent. If Iran is attacked no matter what they do, they might gamble it all.

I think the recent Isrtaeli incursion in Lebanon, and the American occupation of Iraq has taught the Iranians many valuable lessons.

I don’t think so. If he is under articles of impeachment, he will be severely curtailed as to what he can do. I think if he tried to order the military to attack Iran, while under articles of impeachment, they would refuse to follow his orders. They may refuse to follow them even if he isn’t under impeachment.

Without another war, he has no basis on which to declare marshal law. I also think if he tried to do that, he would find the white house under military control. If the military pulled a coup to shut the Bush Crime Family down, they would have the backing of 80% of the people in this country.

  24. Daddy-O says:

Finally just started the Seymour Hersh article about this subject; most surprising news I found was this:

“Clandestine operations against Iran are not new…These have included seizing members of Al Quds, the commando arm of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, and taking them to Iraq for interrogation…”

So the United States of America is kidnapping citizens of a soveriegn state that we are not at war with, and ‘interrogating’ them at their leisure?

We’ve already attacked them, time and again. They have not attacked us. Moral high ground, indeed. And: There’s no way in hell I would believe that an Obama or a Hillary or a McCain or a Biden or even an Al Sharpton would do order otherwise, in the name of ‘national security’.

Just watched “JFK” last night, and I’m experiencing a new wave of nausea-filled paranoia by merely THINKING about the military-industrial complex controlled U.S. government.

I would like to think that perhaps the military might, where Congress has refused, uphold their Constitutional pledges if put into a position of having to do so against a tyrannical Executive Branch.
