Bush on $4 gas: ‘I’ve heard of it now.’ (Updated)»

In February, when President Bush was asked what his “advice” would be to the average American who is “facing the prospect of $4 a gallon gasoline,” he replied, “That’s interesting, I hadn’t heard that.” At a press conference this morning, a reporter followed up and asked the president about his previous comments in light of nationwide average gas prices hovering well above $4/gallon. Bush responded, “I’ve heard of it now.” Watch it:

UDPATE: The title of this post has been changed. An early close-caption transcript reported Bush’s remark as “Where are they now?” A later transcript clarified that Bush said, “I’ve heard of it now.” We apologize for the mix-up.

UPDATE II: Also in today’s briefing, Bush acknowledged that offshore oil drilling won’t produce more barrels of oil anytime soon, but he added, “It is going to change the psychology.” Watch it:

Somehow, I get the feeling that this guy is out of touch with reality.

  2. Zooey Says:

Did you see the devilish little grin after he said “Whare are they now?”

He knows what gas prices are. He just really enjoys flipping the American people the bird.

    Nice.

  3. celtic cynic Says:

It’s more than a feeling, Walt. He never has been even close to reality.

  4. MCMetal Says:

The reporters sitting there should all be forced to share a cell along with the anti-American piece of garbage and worst president in US history…………I’ve heard the retarded , lying sack of crap lie over 100 times already………

  5. theduckmanz Says:

He was joking. Although, i dont think he really knows whats going on.

  6. raynman Says:

To Bush, high gas prices means more money to him and his friends. The American people really don’t matter to this man.

  7. Uncle Ho Says:

Bushitler, by his own admission, lives in a bubble, and said he’s absolutely comfortable in it.

  8. Paul W Says:

I heard some of Bush’s press conference this morning. Summing up, the economy is not that bad, we can drill our way out of high gas prices and anything that really is a problem is due to the Democratic Congress. Never mind that the Democrats have accomplished nothing so far, except capitulate to Bush.

  9. MCMetal Says:

Shrub , of course , blamed Congress for the high price of gas ……………………And Clinton , later on.

  10. stewarjt Says:

Remember the Moron’s comment about gas prices in September 2005?

“Don’t buy gas if you don’t need it!” - President Dinkledork

  11. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello Says:

The President is a child of privilege and power. He’s Never had to pay for a mistake he’s ever made, no matter How badly he’s screwed up. Unfortunately for him, there’s nobody who can clean up his mess now. He’s smirking because he’s always gotten away with everything. Howerver he will go down in history as the Worst President Ever. Here’s hoping for investigations, charges and serious prison time for All those who so richly deserve it, post 1/20/09.
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  12. paleolib Says:

That was a “mission accomplished” smirk if I ever saw one. The people are just a flock of sheep to be fleeced to this sorry excuse for a leader and his enablers.

  13. tom Says:

I don’t know how anyone can watch GDumbya’s pressers and still believe that the moron quit drinking and drugging. He may be hiding his consumption in public but there should be no doubt that he is active in his alcoholism and/or addiction.

What an absolute embarrassment this pant-load is to our entire country . . . and himself, for that matter.

  14. misshusseinmolly Says:

I know that windows on presidential limousines are tinted, but even so, passengers can still see out. Driving by any gas station would clue one in as to current gas prices — most gas stations still advertised their prices in fairly high-visibility signage.

I suspect that Bush’s windows have been tinted so heavily as to be opaque — and I speak not only literally, but metaphorically.

  15. Tawdry Says:

Bush knows what the price is but doesn’t care. McCain knew but just not right now. From arrogance to senior moments.

  16. krazeeinjun Says:

  18. MCMetal Says:

Apparently unaware of current gas prices, Bush blurted out, “Where are they now?”

You aware yet of where history is going to rank you on the totem pole of all US presidents , you grinning , braying , lying , stupid jackass ?

Your space is reserved for somewhere underneath the pole itself……

  19. Crusty Old Bastard Says:

Bush acknowledged that offshore oil drilling won’t produce more barrels of oil anytime soon, but he added, “It is going to change the psychology.”

What is it with the Republicans and the whole psychology thing that they keep bringing up? Are they trying to convince Americans that all the crap that’s happening is all in our minds?

Is this the core of Republican thinking nowadays?

  22. dumbstruck Says:

I don’t want this guy thinkin’ nothin’ about psychology.

  23. MCMetal Says:

Also in today’s briefing, Bush acknowledged that offshore oil drilling won’t produce more barrels of oil anytime soon, but he added, “It is going to change the psychology.”

Chimpy has already decided upon his new career when his godawful presidency mercifully ends in Jan ; apparently , it is to be the new , more popular DR Phil………

Be nice if the world court put a kibosh on those dreams with a ‘better’ job more suited to his talents ; producing license plates…..

  24. MapleStreet Says:

The **FIRST** time Bush got caught on the price of gas, it was being clueless. But after being caught on this and still not bothering to find out - sheer stupidity. And they label Obama as an elitist ?

I’d like to add to 11. Abu : a Toast to Molly Iving (Bushwhacked). She pegged it 10 years ago. Shrub has taken over a line of profitable businesses and run them into the ground. He was in the process of doing that in Texas. And now he’s doing it nationally. Only difference is that this time, there is no sugar daddy to bail him out.

  25. Uncle Ho Says:

That’s it! These high gas prices are all Bill Clinton’s fault!

  28. nanlichi Says:

Zooey is right on. Just as Boy George gave the finger to the world at the G8 meeting, “Goodbye from the world’s biggest polluter”, he is giving us the finger. “Fck you Americans, you don’t like me and I don’t like you. I will be remembered as a War President like I wanted to, my family’s fortune has never been more secure, and the Rapture is one step closer.”

What are you going to do about it? heh, heh, heh.

    Evil. Pure unadulterated evil bastard.

  29. MCMetal Says:

“It is going to change the psychology.”

Nice to see Chimpy and McSame viewing themselves as the modern-day equivalents of Freud and Nietzsche ; a pair of the most stupid loads on 2 feet ever in human history , trying to infer particulars about a subject they know even less than they do about governing , being honest , and speaking correctly……..

  30. unbelievable Says:

So this is what it’s like to live in mid-18th century France.

  31. paleolib Says:

He looks so proud of himself after belting out a big ol’ four syllable word like “psychology”. This hopefully is as close as we get to our own Nero. Hopefully he doesn’t get to burn everything before staggering off the stage.

  32. margerine Says:

I can’t believe how naive we’re all painted to be. You just feel the economy is bad, you’re clearly in a poor mental state. Drilling won’t do anything, but it will improve your mental state.

They use this same “psychological” argument from both sides of the fence. It’s really amazing that they can get away with it to this extent. It’s funny they’ll only acknowledge that when it comes to making more money for their friends.

  33. Kay Says:

It continues to astound that ANYONE (worldwide) believes this guy - about anything! He is beyond scary stupid and into the realm of believing mass self-delusion is the order of the day.

I sure am glad 1) that he goes away soon, 2) texas gets him back so the rest of the country can isolate him even more, 3) his handlers get to arrange a non-stop pipe direct to his brain of the cartoon channel so he can continue to exist in his fog…

    WHAT A MORON!

Juan C. Says: Leader of the free world…

After Bush’s second term, I think that title went to Tony Blair. Unfortunately, he couldn’t handle it, so Putin, Merkel and Sarkozy are up for the honors. But I wouldn’t count out the Chinese. They do own us now.

  37. barfly Says:

This is going to crimp Bush’s drilling agenda:

VIENNA, Austria - Oil prices are tumbling as traders dump the commodity amid concerns about the economy that are also driving the stock market sharply.

Prices dropped more than $10 a barrel from highs earlier in the day, and are now down more than $6 from Monday’s closing price. Light, sweet crude is trading at $139.03, down $6.15.

  38. pax Says:

He is such a big dick!

  39. Kay Says:

You’d think at least one of the handlers/puppet string controllers would have at least told him what the average Joe Schmoe is paying for gas.

The Evil Nazi Chimp looks like the image in “1984″ : just the face of the state.

    God I hate this man

  40. Uncle Ho Says:

Bush says; “The enemy has no regard for innocent lives.”

    Oh, the irony.

    Pot, meet kettle.
    Kettle, meet pot.

  41. Zimzone Says:

Chalk this one up as the worst presser ever.

The entire Planet winched as Bush played the ’stupid card’ again.

One can actually become ’socially retarded’ through drugs & alcohol.

Bush is a prime example of the fried egg that’s your brain on drugs.

Let’s all get behind an intervention on our CD Pres: Impeachment.

  47. unbelievable Says:

Uncle Ho Says: Oh, the irony.

Indeed. I wasn’t able to watch his last SOTU speech (psychologically), but in the ones prior that I did see, it always amazed me how he was really speaking of himself in his pontifications, and how he was so blinded by his presumed divine right that he couldn’t see the glaring parallels between himself and the “terrorists” he criticized and condemned.

  48. Zooey Says:

Bush acknowledged that offshore oil drilling won’t produce more barrels of oil anytime soon, but he added, “It is going to change the psychology.”

No Chimperor, it only improves the mind f_ck.

I think they are rose-tinted windows.

  51. barfly Says:

I’ll post it again, and see if it sinks in this time:

VIENNA, Austria - Oil prices are tumbling as traders dump the commodity amid concerns about the economy that are also driving the stock market sharply.

Prices dropped more than $10 a barrel from highs earlier in the day, and are now down more than $6 from Monday’s closing price. Light, sweet crude is trading at $139.03, down $6.15.

  52. A Patriot Acting Says:

You know what would help the psychology of this Nation? George and the Dick shackled and held in stockades in front of the Lincoln Memorial! An endless supply of rotten vegetables and rotten eggs would go a long way in the healing process as well!

  53. unbelievable Says:

barfly Says: Prices dropped more than $10 a barrel from highs earlier in the day, and are now down more than $6 from Monday’s closing price. Light, sweet crude is trading at $139.03, down $6.15.

I’d get excited about this if I weren’t certain that Israel will threaten to bomb Iran again tomorrow or some similar sh*t and it’ll go back up by another $10.

  54. JMOHR Says:

The Republicans and the press continually paint Democratic candidates as part of the elite or unable to relate to the working and middle class. Here we have a very clear demonstration of the truth.

    1. Reagan was an actor. He came across well with the working and middle class as in tune with their problems. In point of fact, he started deregulation and tax cuts weighted towards the wealthy that would initiate a great redistribution of wealth. He undercut the unions resulting in the destruction of the labor union in US culture.

    2. George III was able to defeat Al Gore and John Kerry because King George was the kind you would like to drink a beer with. Gore and Kerry actually had less wealth and came from far less advantageous backgrounds. Same with John Edwards who was from humble roots.

    3. Now we see John McCain with a very well connected military family and far greater personal wealth through his wife than Obama being painted as the “common man.” But we all know the truth. It is Obama who came from humble origins. He got ahead because of programs to help the disadvantaged that allowed him to get an education. However, he worked his ass off to get the kinds of grades that got him into the Ivy league where he excelled. Like most working and middle class, he appreciated the value of hard work to achieve the American dream. McCain got by with extremely mediocre experience at the Naval academy and with a flying record in the service that would have had most washed out during training school.

So, what do we do to turn the issue around? Advertising is the key with stark contrasts drawn between McCain and Obama. Obama needs to relate to the needs of the working class. He knows the price of a gallon of gas. He probably knows the price of milk and a lot of other problem goods. He ought to sprinkle these in every speech. This could be used as ammunition for ads showing Obama speaking to the issue with a cut to McCain saying, for example, how its been a long time since he bought gas but that he hears about it from advisers and town hall meetings. This is the way to shift the image.

  55. LividLib Says:

    You’re too kind.
I’m thinking something more Mussoliniesque in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

  56. nanlichi Says:

Cindy charges $750,000 in ONE month on her cards and Obama is painted as the elitist?

The biggest problem we have, and I don’t know if it is surmountable, is the ignorant throwbacks that respond to the propoganda. How many clingers still think Obama is a Muslim? They are real, not caricatures, they are easily manipulated by Faux News and hate radio, they are proud of their ignorance and they vote.

  57. WaltinTexas Says:

This privledged little rich boy has no concept of the impact that $4 gallon gas has on a working family. Like casulties in Iraq- it’s just a number to him.

  58. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

4$ gas is sooooo last week. Some parts of the country are experiencing 5$.

  59. Dr. Hussein Matt Says:

    2. George III was able to defeat Al Gore and John Kerry because King George was the kind you would like to drink a beer with.

Only a reich-winger would want to have a beer with an alcoholic.

    ____________________________________________________________

What is this, the Mandrake-the-Magician method of governing? Hypnotize us all into a reality that doesn’t exist?

McCain also wants to drill offshore because it will give us all a psychological boost.

What is with these people? What they don’t seem to “get” is that all the drilling in the world isn’t going to affect our “psychology” nearly as much as seeing the price of gas go down on the Citgo sign in our neighborhood.

  61. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

When the boy Bush took office, gas was $1.46.

  62. Hardy Haberman Says:

I don’t care what the transcript says, my ears hear “where are they now” and so did the reporter.

  63. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

“It is going to change the psychology.”

I really wish these people would stop trying to fu(k with my head. It hurts already! Leave it alone!

  64. RUCerious Says:

I gotta wonder how many gallons of gas Bush could hold if a gas hose were shoved up his butt.

If its good enough for frogs, just sayin…

  65. tomcat27834 Says:

Oh please…if I hear that George W. “is the guy everyone wants to drink a beer with”, I’m gonna puke. This is a myth perpetuated to make the privileged SOB look like the regular guy…nothing about George W. is average. He comes from a family of privilege, was a smart-ass in school, bankrupt his business ventures (bailed out by papa Bush cronies) and only at 40 y/o did the frat-boy decide to grow up!

JAN. 20, 2009 - Texas can have its tranplanted village-idiot back. (sorry Texas)

  66. RUCerious Says:

I heard him use the dufus wand crap today.
Am waiting for him to actually pull one out of his rectum, wave it about, sniff it, and lick it clean.

  67. Cats r Flyfishn Says:

Get out the Prozac… it’s all about the psychology. Whatever they are putting in the water to make all this economic pain seem “mental” isn’t working. I’m still feeling the pain everytime I put gas in my car.

  68. Alejandro Says:

All he has to do is look out his window where he can see that gas is about $4.30/gallon for regular in DC.

  69. SP Biloxi Says:

Bush on offshore oil drilling:“It is going to change the psychology.”

Can’t wait for this clown to leave on January 20. The man is just nauseating.

  70. trollsbwild Says:

    The smirk.

Who from the MSM was there? I would love to know. Really hard hitting journalism, huh?

  71. Evil Spaniard Says:

Heard that humming sound too? It’s the Democratic landslide coming in November. Kiss the Oval Office goodbye.

  72. octamethyl Says:

  73. CBreeze Says:

  74. Abu Ben Hussein Leporello Says:

Smug, smarmy, self-satisfied and, hands down, the Worst President Ever.
Impeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution!

  75. Doc Rock Says:

Anything can be spun–perception is their reality.

  76. davidual Says:

Yep, ‘It is going to change the psychology’, which is exactly the game that his oil buddies are playing with America. They get what they want, or they take the country down until they get it. These high oil prices are like an economic ransom. The oil companies are in their Cheney backed win-win situation, and the American populace is in the usual position of lose-lose.
