Today President Bush vetoed the bipartisan Medicare bill that would have prevented a 10.6 percent cut in doctor pay for Medicare fees. His statement explained he objected to roll back elements of the private pay-for-service Medicare Advantage plans. The bill passed both chambers of Congress with veto-proof majorities. Congress will attempt to override the veto “as soon as possible,” said Carol Guthrie, spokeswoman for the Senate Finance Committee. “There’s no time to waste.”
Bush, always willing to lend a hand to a corporate ally at our expense.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:05 pmYeah! Override that lil’ beyotch!
July 15th, 2008 at 3:05 pmTell all your elderly friends and relatives to watch how McCain votes (if he does) on the override.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:09 pmAnother example of compassionate conservatism in action.
By the way, how is S-CHIP doing? (Sigh.)
July 15th, 2008 at 3:09 pmBring it to the floor effing tomorrow! Shove it in Bush’s face and tell him where to sign!
July 15th, 2008 at 3:10 pmFor Truth; even if his veto is overridden, he will only issue a sighning statement that he will ignore it anyhow.
in a ‘just system’ Bush would be hanged.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:12 pmTypical Chimp. Veto restoration of funding necessary to ensure enough doctors stay in the system because the bill cuts funding for an inflationary corporate giveaway. The end of this administration can’t come soon enough.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:12 pmBush vetoes Medicare bill.
– - George “Dadgummit-I’m-Still-Relevant” Bush.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:13 pmTed Kennedy (God bless him) made it back to the Senate to vote for this measure. I hope he’s there to override the veto.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:13 pmWhere are the trolls on this issue?
July 15th, 2008 at 3:16 pmAnother big Fck You from the Deciderer to his subjects. “So 75% of you think I am a petty loser? Well, take that btches! What are you going to do about it? Pelosi and Reid think I am doing a great job. heh, heh, heh”
July 15th, 2008 at 3:19 pmUnreal. A rare bi-partisan agreeement only to have HIM again on the wrong side of the issue.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:24 pmOnly 189 days until this nightmare ends.
O V E R R I D E!
Now is the time for the Congress to take the bullshit by the horns and override.
If he tries to use signing statements to bypass, impeach him.
On second thought, just IMPEACH his ass now and get this administration over with.
Please.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:32 pmTell us again trolls, how the Democratic controlled Congress can’t get anything done?
July 15th, 2008 at 3:36 pmThis makes perfect sense. President Bush supports his corporate masters. He knows that Medicare Plus pays doctors more than Medicare and much more than costs. Big insurance wants it that way. Medicare Plus was to reduce costs by encouraging competition that never came. Instead, it is just one more give away to big business. So now, Bush wants to make sure that doctors fear taking Medicare. Does not matter whether there is or is not a veto over ride. It is sufficient to create risk in the minds of doctors.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:36 pmThis is typical of the Bush, Cheney administration and the Republican party.
July 15th, 2008 at 3:40 pmThey demand that all of our taxpayer monies go to finance wars that their personal companies and their buddy’s companies make hundreds of billions in profit. The American taxpayer is footing the bill for their war profits.
They refuse to give any of the tax money back to the programs that actually help the people. They should all be boiled in oil.
Uncle Ho Says:
For Truth; even if his veto is overridden, he will only issue a sighning statement that he will ignore it anyhow.
He cannot issue a signing statement if they override, because he is not presented it to sign again, it just becomes law.
Not that I don’t expect him to ignore it anyway, like he does with most other laws
July 15th, 2008 at 3:52 pmWayne; I know I’m being cynical, but after 7+ years of this, I’m sick of this phucking shit.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:00 pmBush vetoes Medicare bill.»
Seniors, one of our largest voting blocks:
July 15th, 2008 at 4:06 pm
There are 5 weak/barely R Senate seats which could go dem and give us 60 votes in the Senate. This with a very possible Obama administration think of the changes we could make in Medicare, health care, jobs, education, social security, peace….
July 15th, 2008 at 4:16 pmRemember how Republicans think…
Up is down, good is bad, white is black, soft is hard, etc.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:35 pmBush vetoed it, he said in a statement, because of Democratic attempts to roll back certain private elements within the Medicare program. Democrats say the private plans amount to a corporate giveaway and are too costly; Bush frames it as a matter of choice, saying in a veto statement that “taking choices away from seniors to pay physicians is wrong.”
Bush has been cutting pay to physicians since he took office. His objective was to create the private for-profit “advantage” insurance to allow his corporate buddies to get a cut of the Medicare pie. Seniors didn’t have to dip into their income to purchase these “advantage” policies before Bush took office. The only reason why they have to purchase them now is because no physician will take a new Medicare client who doesn’t have one of the “advantage” policies because the physician would be losing money on the patient without the augmenting insurance.
Hopefully Obama will restore pay to physicians to a market-value level and do away with the profit motive in Medicare. That is not why Medicare was created, to help make more money for corporate insurance companies.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:50 pmJMOHR Says:
So now, Bush wants to make sure that doctors fear taking Medicare. Does not matter whether there is or is not a veto over ride. It is sufficient to create risk in the minds of doctors.
That fear is already there. I have a friend who moved here from California. She can’t find a physician who takes Medicare UNLESS she has the extra “advantage” insurance she has to pay for out of her pocket. Without the augmentation of the extra “advantage” policy, the physician would be losing money to take her on as a patient.
This is what Bush was aiming for. He has privatized Medicare.
July 15th, 2008 at 4:54 pm“Moments ago, the House voted 383 to 41 in favor of overriding the President’s veto.”

Cool — one house down, one to go.
July 15th, 2008 at 5:09 pmThey cana’t push privatized Medicare on to the public, so they will try it from the back door by cutting reimbursements, forcing doctors out of Mediare service.
July 15th, 2008 at 5:11 pmBut let’s continue the corporate welfare for big pharma, by all means.
Bush&Co have been a national disgrace, an international embarrassment, and a blight upon the nation.
And mad King George rumbled from on high: “Physician pay thyself!“
July 15th, 2008 at 5:26 pmWhat is wrong with GWBush? He didn’t veto squat for years, and all of a sudden he’s gotta veto – and has consistently vetoed the wrong bills – ones that would actually benefit. He’s an absolute disgrace. How many more days til we’re rid of President NitWit?

Even with the extra ‘advantage’ physicians in many areas are not taking patients…. these folks that can not find a physician seek care in other towns 20 to 40 miles away.
