After Pointing Out Domenici Lied Twice During Interview, Fox Invites Him Back To Keep ‘Telling The Truth’

Yesterday, Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) appeared on the Fox Business Network to discuss President Bush’s announcement that he would lift the executive order banning offshore oil drilling — which Domenici hailed as “wonderful news.” After explaining to Fox host Elizabeth MacDonald why he had called Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) a “chicken” — “That’s the best word I could come up with” — Domenici launched into a passionate exhortation to expand offshore drilling.

Domenici’s rationale for drilling was so error-filled, however, that MacDonald was forced to repeatedly correct him, starting with the oft-cited issue of hurricane-caused oil spills:

MACDONALD: We saw with Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, a lot of oil spills occurred on those oil platforms –

DOMENICI: Not so! Not so! Don’t em give you that baloney. There were none!

MACDONALD: No, there were 124.

Next, Domenici cited conservatives’ favorite boogeyman, Chinese drilling off of Cuba:

MACDONALD: And you know what I think is upsetting a lot of Americans too is the idea that China owns leases off of Cuba. It’s not just China, it’s Vietnam, it’s Spain. But even though they’re not drilling yet

DOMENICI: Sure they are!

MACDONALD: They haven’t started drilling yet.

Yet Domenici’s errors didn’t dissuade the Fox anchor, who invited the senator back to the network to keep “about telling the truth”:

DOMENICI: We ought to go through because they’re not telling the truth, there’s no risk, it ought to be done.

MACDONALD: We’re about telling the truth on this network, and that’s why we want you to come back.

Watch it:

Domenici received $197,058 from Big Oil between 2002-2007. In fact, Domenici’s lifetime contributions from the oil and natural gas — totalling nearly $750,000 — rank him fifth among the current Senate’s largest energy sector recipients.

Digg It!

Transcript:

MACDONALD: You got into a bit of chicken fight with Sen. Harry Reid. You called him a chicken. … Why did you call Sen. Reid a chicken?

DOMENICI: That’s the best word I could come up with when I heart a reporter say he just told us he was not going to let you vote on the offshore — on taking the moratorium offshore. … and I’ve said he’s got to be a chicken, because the reason he won’t let us is because we’d win! The American people aren’t stupid; they want what’s theirs. [...]

MACDONALD: We saw with Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita, a lot of oil spills occurred on those oil platforms –

DOMENICI: Not so! Not so! Don’t em give you that baloney. There were none!

MACDONALD: No, there were 124.

DOMENICI: Yes, but do you know how many serious oil spills occurred because of the outer water continental shelf drilling, the big kind that are on platforms, the kind we do today? None. Zero.

MACDONALD: I hear what you’re saying. So zero off of there. And you know what I think is upsetting a lot of Americans too is the idea that China owns leases off of Cuba. It’s not just China, it’s Vietnam, it’s Spain. But even though they’re not drilling yet –

DOMENICI: Sure they are!

MACDONALD: They haven’t started drilling yet, but they own the leases, the idea that we own oil-producing properties off-shore. We should get right at it to bring gas prices down. How long will it take though to bring this oil online?

DOMENICI: Look m’am, here’s the thing. When the world judges what’s happening in the oil availability; if they see that the united STates of America has made a decision, the giant has come awake and said let’s allow drilling, we’re the best drillers in the world, we have the best outer continental shelf, we’re doing it for other people in the world. When they see we’re doing it for ourselves, it’s going to have a positive impact on America

MACDONALD: Yeah. Yeah. Right. Senator, thank you so much. I would love it if you could come back and talk to us again and let us know what is going on with the energy legislation making its way through the House.

DOMENICI: I’d like to come back on this issue. We ought to go through because they’re not telling the truth, there’s no risk, it ought to be done.

MACDONALD: We’re about telling the truth on this network, and that’s why we want you to come back.

  3. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

You really have to hand it to Domenici to have the chutzpah to say:

“Does it seem to you like it does to me that Harry Reid is either scared chicken to have a vote? Or has he decided he is going to dictate to the United States Senate,” Domenici said at a news conference.

The Republicans “dictated to the United States Senate” for 7 years by not allowing any bill supported by the Democrats to ever come to the floor for a vote. Now he’s whining because the Democrats are using the same tactic.

Too bad so sad. What a bunch of whiners the Republicans are.

MACDONALD: We’re about telling the truth on this network, and that’s why we want you to come back.

Oh, please, that’s got to be the biggest lie told on Fox News Channel in its entire history! And they’ve told some whoppers!

And, to paraphrase a commercial that’s been running a lot in this area, “Domenici wouldn’t know the truth if it sat in his lap and called him ‘Momma’.”

  5. RUCerious says:

They’re about lying sacks of crap on the show, so Domenici should be a regular!

  6. A Patriot Acting says:

MACDONALD: “We’re about telling the truth on this network…”

If you freeze frame the video feed at this exact moment you can actually see pigs fly out of her ass! Oh wait, that was just Karl Rove behind the desk picking up his Krispy Kreme that he dropped in the previous segmant…CARRY ON!

  7. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I heard on the Randi Rhode Show yesterday that in addition to the 44+ million acres of federal land now under contract for drilling includes a lot of offshore drilling leases that are not being utilized. This is nothing more than a desperate land grab before the Republicans lose control of the government.

Another reason why we need Obama as our President. At least he has good ideas of how we can get away from our dependence on oil.

  8. krazeeinjun says:

DeNile is a river in Egypt. Denial is how conservatives and Republicans react when confronted with documented and easily provable facts.

    Just saying . . .

  9. techsong says:

I can’t see how this dinosaur can survive re-election. This guy is bought and paid for by big oil. He’s lying out of his teeth and is caught at it right on camera even by Fox News. What a scumbag.

  10. margerine says:

Well, I suppose he can come back, lie more and Fox News can tell the truth. It still happens in a roundabout way, I guess? lol

    doublethink.

    from george orwell’s “nineteen eighty-four”:

“The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one’s mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them . . . . To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.”

Joint Report to Congress from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Coast Guard, May 8, 2006 [PDF]:

“As a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita there were six major, five medium, and over 5000 minor oil and hazmat responses. Additional minor spills continue to be identified and addressed. It is estimated that over 9 million gallons of oil was released, and this total does not include oil released from minor spills. A detailed summary of these spills is provided on pages 5-6.”

Testimony to the House Subcommittee on the Environment and Hazardous Materials, Respectfully Submitted to the Honorable Paul E. Gilmore, Chair by Karen K. Gautreaux, Deputy Secretary, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, September 29, 2005 [link]

“Of great concern are the impacts of a number of oil spills resulting from Katrina. Currently 5 major and 5 minor oil spills are the subject of response efforts. It is estimated that over 6.5 million gallons of oil have been released into the environment, with more spills expected as pipelines and facilities resume operations. Over 2.5 million gallons of oil have been recovered as of September 28, with the Coast Guard and LOSCO being the lead agencies in that effort.”

  14. paleolib says:

Domenici saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to retire instead of facing the voters this year. Perhaps he was auditioning today for a job on Fox. He can be the business chanel’s version of KKKarl Rove — you know, a fair and balanced commentator.

  15. robbez_92107 says:

Remind me again – how much coastline does NM have?

    Oh, yeah – that’s what I thought.

  16. Hussein McCain says:

    16. Plenty enough coastline for Iran to sail some steamships up there a aim a few nuclear bombs their way, by golly.

  17. Leftside Annie says:

Heh. This from a network that went to court to ensure its right to lie….

    OK. I see.

  18. dolgre says:

Being a resident of NM, can I say I am so glad this guy will be retiring. In all honestey, he has done a few good things–he has been supportive of mental health issues and insurance parity, and of our high-tech military bases not being shut-down willy-nilly by crazy, uninformed, and corrupt Sec Def Rumsfeld so he could redirect the entire defense budget to the Iraq war. I actually Domenici and his (really sweet) wife once when he toured our community’s domestic violence shelter and he actually seemed like a genuinely caring man in regards to our cause.

Other than that, he has made me cringe every time I hear his extremist partisan hack-dom on national tv. He has been in the rich, rich pockets of the oil, gas, business and ranching interests in this state for as long as I can remember, and because they have way more money than anyone else here, he gets reelected time after time. These old-guard Republicans like Domenici, Hatch, Stevens, etc. don’t seem to DO anything at a certain point, just keep getting re-elected so they can protect their particular political crony constituencies.

  19. dolgre says:

By the way, he is only retiring because he has a degenerative brain disorder and the early stages of dementia.

  20. JMOHR says:

The Republicans habitually lie. The Katrina spills accumulated enough oil on the surface to be visible from space in satellite photos. We know that these are just lies to perpetuate the beliefs of low information voters that make up a considerable portion of the Republican base. These are deliberate lies. However, we cannot prove the requisite guilty knowledge. It is just time to attack the Republican party as the part of ignorance or lies.

Think of an ad showing statements from several Republicans stating that not one drop of oil was spilled. Then shift to a satellite picture of the oil spill. Use a voice over stating the number of major spills, minor spills and total barrels spilled. Then conclude with: “The Republican party, a party of ignorance or lies. We present the facts. You decide.”

  21. gitrdone says:

Republicans must love being lied to. Would explain why they watch Fox Noise.

  22. paleolib says:

The MSNBC story which is from September 19, 2005 expressly states that platform leaks could not be verified or quantified until pumping resumed. In other words, that story predates knowledge of platform/pipeline spills. The Dept. of Interior Minerals Management Service commissioned a survey issued in January 2007 which found the 124 platform/pipeline spills yielding 17,700 barrels that you see thrown around. That is the combined total from Katrina and Rita. The scary thing is that the study concludes that the equipment functioned as it should and minimized the environmental effect of the damage. In other words, whereas the weak FEMA response made the Katrina damage to the residents worse, 17,700 barrels of crude floating around the gulf was a best case scenario for the environment. The study is linked to a 6/20/08 post in http://www.outsidethebeltway.com for those in need of a technical read.

  23. judyinnm says:

Thank God, he’s retiring – Tom Udall needs all our support!!

  24. Daddy-O says:

The real story is that somebody on FOX actually decided to present facts instead of spin. It’s a shocker!

    No one could have predicted.

  25. LoraS says:

This matter is facile. You see, there are two truths in this world: the Republiscum truth and the plain truth.

  26. MapleStreet says:

So you’re insinuating that a lie isn’t the truth ? Some Republican you are !

  27. neopro says:

makes sense. everything on faux news is a lie. just like how everything on cartoon network is a cartoon and everything on comedy central is humorous. fox news is a network who’s bread and butter are nothing but LIES LIES LIES LIES!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. bluevistas says:

I also live in NM and have had to suffer with Domenici. Yes, thank goodness he’s retiring, he’s long past due to leave. Not too surprising about his oil/gas industry support numbers. Just like the out-going NM Rep. Representative–Heather Wilson.

Perhaps the source of the Repub trait of lying should be investigated. Is it something they just take on when registering Repub?, genetic? Can’t tell the truth or own mistakes.

    Support Udall!
