I also live in NM and have had to suffer with Domenici. Yes, thank goodness he's retiring, he's long past due to leave. Not too surprising about his oil/gas industry support numbers. Just like the out-going NM Rep. Representative--Heather Wilson.

Perhaps the source of the Repub trait of lying should be investigated. Is it something they just take on when registering Repub?, genetic? Can't tell the truth or own mistakes.

Support Udall!

The real story is that somebody on FOX actually decided to present facts instead of spin. It's a shocker!

The MSNBC story which is from September 19, 2005 expressly states that platform leaks could not be verified or quantified until pumping resumed. In other words, that story predates knowledge of platform/pipeline spills. The Dept. of Interior Minerals Management Service commissioned a survey issued in January 2007 which found the 124 platform/pipeline spills yielding 17,700 barrels that you see thrown around. That is the combined total from Katrina and Rita. The scary thing is that the study concludes that the equipment functioned as it should and minimized the environmental effect of the damage. In other words, whereas the weak FEMA response made the Katrina damage to the residents worse, 17,700 barrels of crude floating around the gulf was a best case scenario for the environment. The study is linked to a 6/20/08 post in www.outsidethebeltway.com for those in need of a technical read.

The Republicans habitually lie. The Katrina spills accumulated enough oil on the surface to be visible from space in satellite photos. We know that these are just lies to perpetuate the beliefs of low information voters that make up a considerable portion of the Republican base. These are deliberate lies. However, we cannot prove the requisite guilty knowledge. It is just time to attack the Republican party as the part of ignorance or lies.

Think of an ad showing statements from several Republicans stating that not one drop of oil was spilled. Then shift to a satellite picture of the oil spill. Use a voice over stating the number of major spills, minor spills and total barrels spilled. Then conclude with: "The Republican party, a party of ignorance or lies. We present the facts. You decide."

Being a resident of NM, can I say I am so glad this guy will be retiring. In all honestey, he has done a few good things--he has been supportive of mental health issues and insurance parity, and of our high-tech military bases not being shut-down willy-nilly by crazy, uninformed, and corrupt Sec Def Rumsfeld so he could redirect the entire defense budget to the Iraq war. I actually Domenici and his (really sweet) wife once when he toured our community's domestic violence shelter and he actually seemed like a genuinely caring man in regards to our cause.

Other than that, he has made me cringe every time I hear his extremist partisan hack-dom on national tv. He has been in the rich, rich pockets of the oil, gas, business and ranching interests in this state for as long as I can remember, and because they have way more money than anyone else here, he gets reelected time after time. These old-guard Republicans like Domenici, Hatch, Stevens, etc. don't seem to DO anything at a certain point, just keep getting re-elected so they can protect their particular political crony constituencies.

Domenici saw the handwriting on the wall and decided to retire instead of facing the voters this year. Perhaps he was auditioning today for a job on Fox. He can be the business chanel's version of KKKarl Rove -- you know, a fair and balanced commentator.

Joint Report to Congress from the Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Coast Guard, May 8, 2006 [<a href="http://www.uscg.mil/npfc/docs/PDFs/osltf_report_hurricanes.pdf" rel="nofollow">PDF</a>]:

<blockquote>"As a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita there were six major, five medium, and over 5000 minor oil and hazmat responses. Additional minor spills continue to be identified and addressed. It is estimated that over 9 million gallons of oil was released, and this total does not include oil released from minor spills. A detailed summary of these spills is provided on pages 5-6."</blockquote>

Testimony to the House Subcommittee on the Environment and Hazardous Materials, Respectfully Submitted to the Honorable Paul E. Gilmore, Chair by Karen K. Gautreaux, Deputy Secretary, Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, September 29, 2005 [<a href="http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:U5BinnAaXcwJ:energycommerce.house.gov/reparchives/108/Hearings/09292005hearing1646/Gautreaux.pdf+oil+katrina+spill+OR+spills+site:house.gov&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=2&gl=us" rel="nofollow">link</a>]

<blockquote>"Of great concern are the impacts of a number of oil spills resulting from Katrina. Currently 5 major and 5 minor oil spills are the subject of response efforts. It is estimated that over 6.5 million gallons of oil have been released into the environment, with more spills expected as pipelines and facilities resume operations. Over 2.5 million gallons of oil have been recovered as of September 28, with the Coast Guard and LOSCO being the lead agencies in that effort."</blockquote>

“As a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita there were six major, five medium, and over 5000 minor oil and hazmat responses. Additional minor spills continue to be identified and addressed. It is estimated that over 9 million gallons of oil was released, and this total does not include oil released from minor spills.
doublethink.

from george orwell's "nineteen eighty-four":

"The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them . . . . To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them, to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just so long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies — all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge; and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth."

some comments condemn troll droppings

and complain about their presence here at tp.

i think they are prime examples of doublethink.

i think they are ammunition.

thank you.

Well, I suppose he can come back, lie more and Fox News can tell the truth. It still happens in a roundabout way, I guess? lol
