Poll: ‘McCain Is Yoked To The Legacy’ Of Bush»

mccainandbush.jpgRecently, the McCain campaign tried to distance Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) from President Bush’s record:

- Senior Advisory Carly Fiorina: I think if you look at the record, it may be Barack Obama who is running for Bush III. But it certainly is not John McCain.

- Senior Policy Advisor Douglas Holtz - Eakin: Obama’s budget “is dedicated to the recent Bush tradition of spending money on everything.”

But Americans aren’t buying the spin. According to a new New York Times poll, “Mr. McCain is yoked to the legacy of President Bush.” Indeed, a majority of Americans believe that as President, McCain “would continue Mr. Bush’s policies in Iraq and on the economy”:

- 78 percent: McCain would continue Bush’s Iraq policies

- 61 percent: McCain would continue Bush’s economic policies

- 65 percent: McCain would not bring change to Washington

Indeed, as ThinkProgress has noted, McCain represents a third term of his buddy Bush on issue after issue. According to a CQ analysis of Senate votes on issues President Bush expressed “an explicit, stated opinion,” McCain voted with President Bush 100 percent of the time in 2008 and 95 percent of the time in 2007.

In April, during an appearance on Mike Gallagher’s show, McCain bragged that “no one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have.” The American people agree.

I heard Rachel Maddow on Countdown last night recite many of the ways that McCain is like Bush. It was a very long list.

BTW, I hope that Keith comes back soon. If he doesn’t, he may not be able to get his show back. Rachel is doing a great job and could easily replace Keith. In some ways I like Rachel better. She can tell you quickly what her meaning is, just by the expression on her face. And she is much funnier than Keith. My only complaint is the suits she wears. I know she is gay, but it would be nice to see her in something other than a mannish suit.

  28. judyinnm Says:

Voting with Bush 100% in 2008 doesn’t say much, considering how little he’s bothered to vote, in 2008 - not that his not voting is a bad thing - this is just an observation.

Polls showing McCain closing the gap on Obama reminds me of how we were prepared for Bush’s “wins” in the last two (rigged) elections. If Obama doesn’t win by a HUGE margin, we’ll have another stolen election (Diebold is still there, you know).

I think so too and I have a sneaking suspicion that we are going to find out what it is at their convention when they nominate Romney/Huckabee because McCain is too sick.

I had another epiphany. I was wondering why Obama isn’t running ads pointing out all of McCains flip flops and gaffe’s. Now I’m wondering if they don’t suspect the same thing, that McCain won’t be the eventual candidate. So, they are not wasting their money right now fighting McCain. It will be kind of tough taking on a fresh & new opponent 2 months before the election.

What the Obama camp should be doing is running ads against the Republican party, pointing out to the public all the harm they have done to this country. That way if the Republicans pull a switch, Obama will be ahead of the game.

  35. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

    Kay Says:
International Tribunal in Hague against the Bush Admin for the Crimes of Treason and Crimes Against Humanity.

I think it is sad that our best bet for making the Bush Crime Family pay for their crimes is a international tribunal. We should take care of it here, in our country.

I am so hoping that Obama investigates and prosecutes every crime these people have committed. If he doesn’t he is just leaving the door open for future Presidents to commit similar crimes. Who knows, he may even do it himself. All that power must be very tempting.

“Of course, you’ll have the good decency not to tell people I spoke to you.”

  37. cavjam Says:

    Bilbo,
Don’t know if I concur with the candidate switch scenario, but that Dems need to run against the GOP, not a particular candidate, is still spot on. There’s no defending policy results of the last seven-plus years.

BTW, the above quote re underestimating the Amer. public is Mencken’s.

  38. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

I agree with the strategy of running against the Republican Party itself, so that no candidate of theirs (at any level) has a chance. People need to be made aware that the current financial and economic problems are the direct result of Republican policies and practices. The disastrous military situation we find ourselves in was another direct result of Republican rule. And while the Republican president and vice president violated their oaths of office repeatedly and flagrantly, the Republicans in Congress and in the Judiciary helped them every step of the way. The Democrats need to make people understand that the Republicans do not act in the best interests of America or of Americans. Friends don’t let friends vote Republican.

A vote for Republicans is a vote against America. It’s just that simple.

  39. nanlichi Says:

Hey ace! I have a serious proposition for you, I will give you two to one odds that McCAin doesn’t win in November. If he loses, you pay $1,000 to the charity of my choice and if he wins, I will pay $2,000 to whatever hate-filled cause you currently support.

  52. nanlichi Says:

Ok prytania, let’s do it. I am in Arizona and can put my money in an escrow at Transnation Title with the instructions that if McCain wins, send it to whatever KKK group you belong to and you get your money back (plus bragging rights), when McCain doesn’t win, you send the $1,000 to Casa de los Niños and I get my money back.

If you seriously think that America is going to vote for more of the same miserable fck that we have seen for 7-1/2 years, you have some wires touching.

But we already knew that didn’t we?

Let me know when your Mom saves enough quarters to come up with the $1,000 and I will give you the name and address of the office and escrow officer.
