Rep. Hastings on Guantanamo visit: I got there early and ‘they were still whitewashing the walls.’

Yesterday, the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe held a hearing regarding the future of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. During the hearing, Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) recounted his experiences visiting the detention center. Hastings, who arrived at the facility “two hours early one day” during his visit, said he witnessed Guantanamo staffers “whitewashing the walls” in anticipation of the arrival of the other members of congress:

I know that they had washed it that day. Cleaned it up. And the prisoners were eating the best meal that they had gotten in a week. And I could go on and on and on and on. I even remember I got there — I did so deliberately — two hours early one day. And they were still whitewashing the walls and what have you.

Hastings said he “wasn’t impressed” by the “dog and pony show.”

You mean Gitmo Country Club and Water Spa isn’t a 4 star resort?

    Who’da thunk?

  5. Zimzone says:

‘Gitmo at Gitmo’…was Rush there the day before?

If so, I could see why a major cleanup was mandatory, but I didn’t know we had any little boys in camp…

  6. RUCerious says:

Dumbfu cks, don’t they know you’re supposed to clean up at least 12 hours ahead of a congressional visit?
    Geez.

S.O.P.: Army philosophy–screw the mission and clean the position-i.e., the German Army without the Goose step—the idea that looks beat substance–the Nixon-concept Army

  11. Buckie Boy says:

This is typical of the military, just before high ranking visitors or inspections they would have us scrubbing everything in sight, they would even spray paint the lawn green.

But just the fact that we are holding (mostly innocent) victims for so many years caused by Bush’s gather em’ up and pay out rewards policy, is embarrassing enough.

Good on Hastings to have the foresight to show up early. I wonder what he would have seen if he had arrived the day before.

So what he’s saying, the residents of Gitmo only get the Gitmo Lemon Chicken when there are visiting dignitaries.

When Condi comes, they spray the walls with blood.

    “What’s that Sir”? “Screams Sir”?

“Well, they do take their soccer seriously. A disputed call no doubt. Nothing sinister I assure you”.

  18. JMOHR says:

It reminds me of the classic scene in many WWII movies involving US POW’s where the Nazi guards hand out new blankets, dishes and food because the Red Cross is coming. Of course, they take it all back as soon as the show is over.

With any luck, there will be a few Gitmo executions before Bush leaves office…

So will your boys be coming over to watch those on payperview? If torture works, John McCain told the truth…

    .

    TORTURE is TORTURE…
    War Crimes are War Crimes…

No matter how much “white wash” one puts on it, at it’s core, warcrimes have occured by the stamp of approval of the Adminstration’s Security Council and the signature of George Worst Bush.

Personally, I think America can do better and deserves better. The only problem is, when will Americans demand it from THEIR Government.

Dumb Thought – as we have spy satellites that can supposedly spot a cigarette butt on the ground, why not have the CIA aim the satellites at Gitmo and collect some evidence ?
