Romney falsely claims McCain supports drilling in ANWR.

Romney falsely claims McCain supports drilling in ANWR.»

During a recent interview with CBSNews.com, former Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) got a little carried away with the recent conservative mantra of ‘drill here, drill now,’ falsely suggesting that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) supported drilling for oil in ANWR:

John McCain will get us energy independent. With more drilling–offshore, ANWR–with more drilling, with more nuclear power plants, with the use of coal and gas, he will get us energy independent–that’ the first thing you’ve gotta do to get this economy going.

Watch It:

McCain has stated that “ANWR is a pristine place and if they found oil in the Grand Canyon, I don’t think I’d drill in the Grand Canyon.’’

Romney disagrees. Today, during an appearance on Fox News, Romney proclaimed, we “should be drilling everywhere we can.” Read about the top three conservative myths about drilling in the latest Progress Report.

Romney: With more drilling–offshore, ANWR–with more drilling, with more nuclear power plants, with the use of coal and gas, he will get us energy independent–that’ the first thing you’ve gotta do to get this economy going.

If that’s “the first thing”, and each of these “first things:” will take six to ten years to accomplish, the GOP is planning on this economy not getting going for a while, huh?

How bizzare, can we name this phenomena “drill in my back yard” now…DIMBY-now?

  3. John Kerry Says:

Either you libs can’t read or hear or just want to believe whatever you want to believe because Mitt DID NOT suggest anything of the kind!! UNBELIEVABLE!!

Mitt simply was giving HIS (Mitt’s, that is for all you dumb libs!) opinion that Mc Cain will get us energy independent!! He NEVER stated that John SPECIFICALLY is for this!

    PHEW!!

  4. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    ralph,

We all know that someone is getting rich off this energy crisis, and the most important thing to Republicans is this continue. They are not interested in solving our energy crisis, only in finding ways to make a small number of people even wealthier because of it. If Republicans really did care about getting this nation off of its addiction to oil, then why have they fought so hard to keep us dependent on it?

Jeff Gannon totally agrees with this.

  8. RUCerious Says:

    Ohplease,

It makes sense to spend ten years drilling for a nine month supply of oil that’ll be sold to Japan and China?

  9. RUCerious Says:

By the time these wells would become productive, we should have already implemented renewable energy to the point where the oil would be for lubrication only. Fu ckwits.

  10. paleolib Says:

Every time Mittens opens his mouth he reminds me how pathetic the GOP field was this year to yield Uncle Grampa as the candidate. This “drill everywhere” mantra is just an effort to con voters into forgetting who has been in charge the past eight years while fuel prices steadily rose. Suggest drilling on the front lawn of one of Romney’s mansions and you will find out how enthused he really is.

Normally, I prefer not to attack another poster personally like this, but you have got to be one of the stupidest trolls to infest this site.

You see that “JohnMcCain.com” banner behind him? That’s there because he’s speaking for the candidate! He is out campaigning for John McCain and telling people what McCain will start doing if and when hell freezes over and he is elected president. In other words, he is speaking for John McCain, not simply “giving HIS (Mitt’s…) opinion”. That he’s contradicting (apparently) what McCain himself is saying is their problem.

No wonder you get trashed so often when you show up here. You’re no damn good at defending the right wing!

Other than that, please do enjoy yourself as you pursue other activities today. Goodbye.

GDumbya is a deer caught in the headlights; McNumbNuts is road-kill.

  16. Peter C Says:

What a pathetically hollow and polution-ridden policy. More nukes! More Coal! Drilling Everywhere!

Conservation??? Fuel Economy??? Renewable Energy??? not so much.

Apparently, WE (and our behavior) are not the problem. The problem is that the oil happens to be under the wrong countries. The Republicans have already shown that they are willing to try to use our military to fix that problem.

All they have to offer is happy-talk, as if that will make all the problems go away. After 8 years of drift, we need leaders who are RESPONSIBLE and not just doing all they can think of to be popular!

Um…so why isn’t Romney calling for the oil companies to drill where they ALREADY hold leases?

McShift’s opposition to drilling in ANWR is one of the few positions he hasn’t flip-flopped on. Yet.

Perhaps Romney accidentally picked up a copy of NEXT week’s talking points instead of this week’s?

  19. DwH Says:

Nauseating. Drilling and it’s effects are the worst possible, least effective way to address our energy crisis.

Elect oilmen to the White House, and give plenty of money to republican candidates, and this is what happens.

They’ve only got the summer to ramp up this false idea that drilling will solve our economic woes… what baloney… before the Dems take control of the White House, so expect more of this. They can’t use fear of Islam or gays, but fear of a depression? That may work.

Schwarzenegger has earned my respect for his stand on this issue, breaking with the oil barons and Bush/Cheney. He really does have courage.

Sensible people know that drilling in ANWR won’t do a thing to lower our gas prices. Even the Republicans know that it won’t do a thing to lower our gas prices. But their goal isn’t to lower gas prices, it’s to create a “psychological” benefit where we are happier and don’t mind our gas prices being so high. After all, this is a MENTAL recession, dontcha know?

Can’t you just FEEL the psychological benefits from this just by hearing about it?

Mr. Breck Romney will say and do anything for the Veep position in Gramps’ camp.

  24. Shayne Says:

If you took the words Obama and Democrats away from McCranky and Mutt they couldn’t form a complete sentence. It’s never about what they’ll do that’s positive it’s always about what the Democrats will do wrong.

  25. IgnoranceIsNotBliss Says:

What are y’all whining about? Haven’t you heard that we are in a mental recession and we have to have something done that will cause a psychological effect and make us feel better? Come on people!! Get with the program!!

  26. Zimzone Says:

Did you know that the word ‘money’ appears in Mitt’s last name?

Did you know that both Money Mitt & McCindy own 7 houses each?

Did you know that both have accused Obama of being ‘elitist’?

Did you know Mitt Money will be McCindy’s running ‘mate’?

OK, how did you do on this test?

    What?

No, Rud911y is now sucking up to Israel, so he can’t run.

No, Huckabible is now doing Paul Harvey’s show, he’s too busy.

    What?

No, Reagan can’t run, he’s living with Falwell & Heston.

Thanks for playing, Mr. O’Reilly, but you failed the test.

  27. dbadass Says:

    Hi John Kerry:
Care to stay awhile. I’ll put on the kettle.
    You’re scared aren’t you?

  28. Pernell Says:

I think it is McCain who is lying. He will be pro drilling in ANWR either during the campaign, or after the election should enough people be deceived into voting for him. But let’s face it, everyone in America will be for drilling before it is over, it is inevitable. We are on a collision course with horror in the world in many areas - so much of it the outgrowth of conservative ideology. We are unprepared.

I remember a president who set the proper goal to get us off the oil addiction and would have stuck to the goal. That was Carter and conservatives have all been conditioned to see him as a person to despise and view as a failure even in his post presidency. Reagan came into office and Carter’s energy goals were pushed to the side. Reminiscent of the way Bush 43 set aside the Hart-Rudman Report which, had it been implemented, could have stopped 911. But no, Hart-Rudman was from a commission that Clinton had set up and we all know how conservatives are conditioned to hate anything touching him also. So, Bush told Hart-Rudman to take a hike in one of the most disgustingly inept and disastrous decisions any president in history ever let his vice president make.

TP, some reason you posted so much of Romney/McCain’s propaganda? What happened to good old short clips? You don’t have to worry about context too much. We know what you mean, we know the players involved and as far as conservatives go, they lack the critical thinking skills it takes to know reality when it pops them on the nose.

  30. Zimzone Says:

It’s my understanding that most, if not all, Alaskan oil goes to Japan.

It’s also my understanding that 1.6 million bbl/day goes to places across the pond.

    That’s about 580 million bbl/ year.

    Anyone?

  31. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Prudhoe Bay is not in ANWR, Jim, is it? ANWR is where the Republicans want to talk about drilling now in an effort to ease prices now, but it won’t do anything for prices now and they know that.

  32. Hussein McCain Says:

Jim W., Alaska exports oil. There are restrictions, but they do export.

  33. dbadass Says:

    Jim Wilkes:
If we just had learned a few very simply conservation strategies and employed them since 1995, anything Clinton did or did not do wouldn’t matter. Why has there been no national call to arms. Stop with the stupid Fiji water, ride a bike once and awhile, unplug the vampires, drive 55 or is all that to inconvenient to the “I need more” crowd?

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

This is such BS that more drilling in the USA will make us energy independent. We already export more oil drilled in this country than we keep for ourselves. Is Congress wants to pass a bill allowing for more drilling here, they need to attach a requirement to the bill that no oil drilled in this country can be shipped out of the country. It will be for our use only. I’m betting that the Republicans would not go for a bill like that. They are not interested in making us energy independent, that’s just their code words to get the American public to go along with their plan. It’s really about the US oil companies getting their hands on land and see access to the remainder of oil reserves in this country.

  35. Hussein McCain Says:

Jim W., the CIA Factbook says U.S. exported slightly more than one million bbl/day for the year 2004. That’s a whole lotta Penzoil!

  36. LibertyLover Says:

How come none of McCain’s surrogates are getting anything right these days? Could it be that i because McCain just doesn’t know what to think from day to day himself?

  37. dbadass Says:

    Jim Wilke:
How come you never come in with any conservation/ideas or even cite the concept until it is sort of forced upon you? Why do you think the nation has not gathered around a cause. Afterall aren’t we supposed to be at war and all?

How about a decent citizen victory garden campaign?? Seen anyone other than yourself using more fiber grocery bags? Lots more carpooling in the neighborhood?

Ask not what you can do for your country, just buys some more shit you don’t need.

  38. Hussein McCain Says:

Jim W., Can you site your source for the claim that “A solid majority of Americans…”?

  39. IBTunion4obama Says:

    Jim Wilke,
It would take 10 years to get a drop of oil. Not to mention, the Energy Department researched the issue and concluded that prices would drop by a couple pennies, taking it about 10 years to see a difference. The reason why the Republicans support this, is simply because they don’t want to put their big oil buddies out of business. The majority Americans think Bush and the Republicans are a failure, and more and more are shifting to believe so. What do you think of that?

  40. dbadass Says:

    Jim Wilke:
What conservation methods have you and yours instituted in response to recent events and what advise to others might you offer on individual responsible hydrocarbon usage?

  41. republicanSScareme Says:

My candidates for the top three conservative myths:

    1. Money = Brains. Despite ironclad and irrefutable evidence of the contrary, Republicans continue to hold this up as their main delusion. Only the sight of God carrying a hammer will convince them otherwise.

    2. Rich guys work hard. Poor guys don’t. This is a Park Avenue translation of “Brains = Success.” These clowns have to explain their success and what better way to do it than by conning themselves into thinking it’s all brains and hard work? Anyone who suggests that Lady Luck might have something to do with it…is obviously a Communist, a terrorist, or a Democrat.

    3. Successful people deserve everything they’ve earned. The formula is “Hard Working Rich Man = Very Good Person.” Stupid poor man not so good. Do less than hard working rich man.

Republicans have made the word “conservative” mean “ignorant and/or mythical.”

  42. jay_severin_has_a_small_pen1s Says:

Man, I wish that the Republican Congress had resubmitted the bill that Clinton vetoed AFTER George Bush became President. That way the Republicans wouldn’t be to blame for this energy crisis. They sure missed a golden opportunity there, from 2000-2006 when they controlled Congress and had a Republican President who couldn’t help but sign anything they sent him.

  43. shaun Says:

stick to what you know, mitt - nine tenths of fu(k all.
