The Huffington Post reports that Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) has introduced “an amendment to name an HIV/AIDS relief bill after the recently deceased Jesse Helms,” who was a “strident foe of HIV/AIDS prevention, research and treatment.”
Helms was notorious for his ignorant comments regarding HIV/AIDS. In 1987 he described “AIDS prevention literature as ‘so obscene, so revolting, I may throw up‘” and in 1995 Helms argued that “that the government should spend less on people with AIDS because they got sick due to their ‘deliberate, disgusting, revolting conduct.’”
HOLY CRAP.
What is wrong with these hideous morons????
July 16th, 2008 at 1:04 pmPlease, Mrs Dole, save the Jesse Helms name for a bill subsidizing the making of nooses and such.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:04 pmGo Libby!
July 16th, 2008 at 1:04 pm….and now, the state of Israel will dedicate a plaza in Jerusalem to Adolf Eichmann.
sarc on.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:05 pmWhat a good way to slap AIDS in the face!
July 16th, 2008 at 1:05 pmOh. My. God.
B!tch.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:05 pmWTF? I saw her give her little speech about his greatness to the Senate on a day where there was much more important business she wasted 10 minutes. When is she up for reelection?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:06 pmDamn, and all I wanted was a NEA funded art show named after him…
July 16th, 2008 at 1:07 pmOh those silly Republics, what will they think of next.
More of that Bush New Speak….white is black, war is peace, bigotry is tolerance.

Have at this stupid beeyotch, people.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:10 pmWhat a disgusting piece of legislation. Sen Jesse Helms was one of the most bigoted homophobes in our Senate’s history. He may very well have been a nice and decent guy to the non-politicians who knew him, but his words and deeds as a United States Senator earned him the contempt he drew. And I don’t think he would be in the least bit “honored” to have a bill funding HIV/AIDS prevention named after him unless that bill promised to cut off any and all future funding for this cause permanently.
Dole should withdraw her amendment and just blame it on a “senior moment”.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:10 pmWhat is that db, the art of burning crosses and lynching innocents?

July 16th, 2008 at 1:12 pmLeftside Annie is right.
What is WRONG with these people? Are they all so warped and twisted that they can’t see straight, much less think?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:14 pmShe has always been a ridiculously shallow and vacuous Senator, and this further demonstrates it.
Hi Shayne:
July 16th, 2008 at 1:15 pmI won’t bore you with the details but essentially right after his passing what I wanted to do was get some talented artists together to produce a multimedia installation which would incorporate many of the most striking and bizarre quotes of Mr. Helms and have the work travel about the country to civil rights museums and other appropriate venues. The lynch pin was I wanted the whole thing funded by the NEA. I thought it a fitting tribute

July 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pmDole’s proposal is both ironic and insulting, and the insulting irony is that she clearly thinks it’s neither.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pmSomeone flag Naderman, please.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:17 pmAll I can say is: balls of steel.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:18 pmBono isn’t a U.S. citizen and didn’t realize he was being duped. We know better JJ, didn’t you have to go somewhere else?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:18 pmWhat an idiot.
good news:
July 16th, 2008 at 1:19 pmThere is a chance WE can grab 61 seats in the senate.
jabberjaw’s Nader thing is a charade but I suppose we all already know that.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pmBull sh*t!
July 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pmThis needs to be stopped pronto!
I am from NC and we citizens and especially gays have no respect for Helms or Liddy-Face-Lift!!!
Jesse Helms, 20 years late. How many people died because he and his ilk, like Reagan, were so freakin’ ignorant. Why don’t you just STFU no heinous troll breath. You’re as dumb as that Dole byatch.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:20 pmI wonder how many of the people who voted for Helms will admit that they were persuaded by his bigoted, racist, and homophobic remarks? Better still, I would be more encouraged to know how many people were persuaded to vote against Helms because of his bigoted, racist, and homophobic remarks?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:21 pmYes.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:24 pm*High five* Shayne – me too.
Good grief. I swear to FSM, every single damned time I think I’ve seen the Repukes scraping the absolute, unquestioned, uttermost, lightless abyss at the very bottom of the slime-filled barrel that is the GOP, well, they manage to go deeper.

This year. In my state. But I’m voting for her Democratic opponent, Kay Hagan.

Elizabeth Dole is currently ahead in the polls, but it’s close. Unusually close for an incumbent running against a challenger. General discontent with the GOP is hurting her.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:27 pmMy sister lives in NC misshusseinmolly. Usually she won’t get involved in politics but she sent me something about them wanting to drill off shore. I’m sure this will get her to vote for Kay Hagan. I’ll email her the link.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:30 pmToo little, too late?
Or just a ploy to rehab his image?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:31 pmWill this be before or after the WBC members protest GOD`S RATH for homosexuality, war and AIDS……….
July 16th, 2008 at 1:32 pmIn other legislative action Dole introduced bills to build a statue of Michael Brown in the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, to name a planned civil rights museum in Washington for Strom Thurmond and to allow oil drilling off the coast of Kansas.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:34 pmO.k. so I disagree with Helms on a lot, and certainly with his stance on Aids in the 1980’s, but it looks like he turned things around. Better late than never.
And what has he ever done for American aids victims?
Anything?

LOL!
July 16th, 2008 at 1:35 pmJesse Helms actually worked with Bono on battling the problem of AIDS in Africa during his last year in office, and this may be what Elizabeth Dole is thinking of. Either that, or she’s trying to get SOMETHING named after Helms, no matter how ridiculous it is.
Even though Helms softened on AIDS in Africa, he remained opposed to helping Americans with the illness, since he blamed every case of AIDS in this country on sodomy.
I am trusting that the rest of the Senate will see that Dole’s amendment is completely silly and will vote it down.

Why are you so committed to polishing Helms’ image?
To quote the great Lyle Lovett:
July 16th, 2008 at 1:45 pm
It’s not just GOP discontent that’s hurting Dole. I’m from NC and even the Republicans are angry with her. She never responds to her constituents (not even a robocall) while the other Pug, Burr, has a good record of responding to all constituents.
Liddy’s husband is regeisterd to vote in Kansas while Liddy is registered in NC. Isn’t that odd for a couple married so long to be registered in 2 different states?
She got herself elected in NC 6 years ago, made a speech where she said she hoped to emulate Jesse Helms and then LEFT THE STATE. We rarely see her unless she’s here to bash a Democrat. She made a brief appearance in Raleigh when a hurricane threatened in 2004 and proceeded to bash John Edwards because he was on the campaign trail. After the TV station filmed her, she was on a private jet back to DC.
I hope Kay Hagen uses this Jesse Helms thing against her – like the Willie Horton ad. I hope Liddy is so embarrased she never shows her face here again as long as she lives.
She has balls grwoing under her skirt. Hateful woman!

____________________________________________________________
It’s kind of an interesting mix. Helms certainly had his detractors here in his home state — people who were rabidly against him and his hateful ilk — and voted against him five times. In fact, each of his five winning margins was only in the single digits — no landslides. Those who opposed Helms would readily claim that his “bigoted, racist, and homophobic” positions played an important part in their decision.
Of the people who voted for him, there were certainly many who agreed with his bigoted stands (but they would never admit that Helms was “bigoted, racist, and homophobic”).
There were also many tobacco farmers and others in the tobacco industry who appreciated that Helms worked tirelessly to defend them. They could care less about the rest of Helms’ politics as long as their livelihood was protected.
And then there were those who supported Helms because he WAS so unpopular with the rest of the country. Sort of an anti-hero thing. They got a big kick out of “nobody’s gonna tell us who we can or can’t send to the U.S. Senate!”
Reactions here were even mixed regarding Helms’ death. Praised by some, vilified by others. Some expressed relief that Helms was no longer suffering (he had vascular dementia and lived in a nursing home), and others just expressed relief that he and his legacy were finally history.
July 16th, 2008 at 1:48 pm“I’ve never heard once in this chamber anybody say to the
homosexuals, ’stop what you’re doing.’ If they would stop what
they’re doing there would not be one additional case of AIDS
in the United State.”
~Jesse Helms
Sadly, this kind of ignorance, which was embraced by the Reagan Administration, directly led to the deaths of many heterosexuals who never practiced homosexuality in their lives. They received the virus through blood transfusions. Tennis legend Arthur Ashe was among those we lost this way, as well as thousands of others.

When did Byrd make those comments? What did he accomplish over the years to make up for his early views. There’s no comparison, blabberjaw. None.
And you still haven’t explained why you’re so set on polishing that image for Jesse.

July 16th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
The “double standard” of a lifetime ago (over 50 years) , as opposed to a decade ago ?
You’re the twit that is sporting the double standard ; because Helms was a GOP party member (and a complete scumbag , too) , he deserves special treatment in your eyes……
July 16th, 2008 at 1:54 pmThanks, misshusseinmolly. I was curious what the reaction to the news of his death was in his home state. I understand about the tobacco farmers supporting him, but I have to ask them, “Was there no one else available to run for his seat who could fight for the tobacco farmers without resorting to the hate-filled rhetoric?” If not, one wonders if it was the tobacco farmers who also held such horrible beliefs about other humans. (I can’t help but think that they had to know they were growing a deadly crop. They couldn’t have been that ignorant.)
July 16th, 2008 at 1:55 pmWhy do Democrats support Robert Byrd? Shouldn’t we hold his comments from his days in the KKK against him?
Helms slammed America’s gays for years, and did nothing for them, while Byrd took acts to mitigate the damage his previous positions had caused for America’s blacks.
Notice, it’s an AIDs relief bill; can you find any legislation of his, for AIDS research funding?
July 16th, 2008 at 1:57 pmjabberjaw,
