McCain campaign on ‘McCain being McCain.’ (Updated)

Today in the Politico, Ben Smith tracks the numerous offensive jokes — often aimed at women — that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) loves to tell on the campaign trail. Though the campaign said McCain “didn’t recall” telling a joke during his 1986 Senate race about women loving rape, the campaign insisted these offensive jokes proved McCain was “authentic” and showed “McCain being McCain”:

“He’s long said that he’s said and done things in the past that he regrets,” [McCain spokesman Brian] Rogers said. “You’ve just got to move on and be yourself — that’s what people want. They want somebody who’s authentic, and this kind of stuff is a good example of McCain being McCain.

The mainstream media has also gushed over McCain’s “trademark wit,” declaring that a joke about blowing up Jon Stewart with an IED “makes him seem much more accessible” because “everybody likes a guy with a good sense of humor.”

Update The "authentic" appeal of McCain's often offensive humor apparently doesn't extend to his fundraisers. A prominent bundler for McCain, Clayton Williams, has now been quietly excised from the campaign's list of fundraisers as a result of a "tasteless joke about rape during his unsuccessful 1990 campaign for governor."
Update As Ben Smith points out, the McCain campaign's spokesman said that the "McCain being McCain" reference "excluded the alleged rape joke." We regret the error.

My guess is the corporate media would call him quaint and authentic if he called Obama a n***er. Just McNimrod being McNimrod.
The fact that all his gaffes and political in-correctness are presented as proof he’s authentic is a good enough reason for the people to turn their backs on him. He is dumb. He is wrong. He should be rejected.

  6. Exit Stage Left says:

How could any self-respecting woman vote for this disgusting moron?

There are jokes which can be shared with everybody. There are jokes that should only be shared with close friends. There are jokes which should never be told and there are audiences for which any joke is inappropriate.

One would hope a Presidential candidate would be wise enough to make those distinctions. Obviously McPander Bear isn’t that wise.

Yeppers, McCain is an authentic a$$hole. His behavior shows an offensive pattern of behavior towards women. For the life of me I don’t see how any woman could, in good conscience, vote for him. Just like I never understood how Hillary cozied up to McCain after his offensive joke about Chelsea. Men who make offensive jokes about women or call them offensive names DO NOT RESPECT WOMEN.

  16. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

McCain probably doesn’t remember telling this joke because it was just one of hundreds of disrespectful jokes he has told over the years denigrating women.

  19. BluNews says:

So he never actually said it, but if he did, then it is a good example of him doing something he was sorry for and we should move on.

Makes sense to me. Except for the being sorry part. And if this is being authentic, then isn’t denigrating women something that would be considered a character flaw?

That was because the various media in Texas condemned Claytie for that remark, and rightly so. ______________________________________

Well, this self-respecting woman certainly isn’t. McCain has thoroughly convinced me that he is of a caveman mindset when it comes to women — that they’re only good for cooking, cleaning, and f***ing.

McCain may meet with women’s groups and attempt to dazzle them with empty platitudes, which he probably convinces himself are effective because after all, women are rather shallow and dim creatures (snark).

Like Zooey, I would be interested in hearing from women who plan to vote for him, and why they support him.

McCain’s jokes are not only misogynistic, ugly and vulgar, they’re old, unfunny and weak as the sixth cup of tea from the bag.

These are the jokes of a geezer who carries them around like a fanny pack and yanks them out at every conceivable opportunity, and then laughs at them himself and sits their smugly, assured that he has ‘broken the ice,’ as they say.

Republicans, how can you possibly vote for a guy who thinks this stuff is actually funny? Doesn’t it terrify you that you’rre thinking of putting your Uncle Burgess in the White House? You know, the guy who said ‘you’re butter off without it!” every single goddamn time anybody asked for the butter? Who would say “So–workin’ hard or hardly workin’?” every single time he met you?

Do we have the name of just one person in that large group of listeners who admits to hearing this comment first hand? If it really happened, there must be an eye witness willing to step forward, or an audio tape or a video tape. Anything?
    ____________________________________________________________

I’m sure that if this story gained any traction at all with the MSM (which it won’t), somebody would step forward. I wouldn’t count on any kind of audio or video recording of it to exist, because 1986 was before the era of compulsively recording everything.

What’s telling to me, though, is McCain’s reaction to the allegation. If he was truly innocent of telling such a vile joke, and if he was as appalled by such tastelessness as he should be, his reaction would mostly have been along the lines of, “that is an out and out lie. That so-called “joke” is completely offensive and goes against all the values I stand for. I would never have said such a thing.” This is the reaction of — for example — people like Barack and Michelle Obama when a rumor surfaces that a tape exists of her saying hateful things about white people and using the term “whitey”.

But no — McCain instead claims the old “I don’t recall” line. This comment is the refuge of the scoundrel, the translation of which is usually “Oh, sh!t — I had no idea that was going to get out. I’d better issue something that sounds like a denial, but I’ll use weasel words in case somebody caught me on tape.”

If this is the kind of “joke” that McCain would truly never tell, then he should be d*mn sure he never told such a thing, and he should say so.

Apparently sexual manipulation of a stupid 20 year old tubby girl and vulgar acts performed with Cigars and what not in the oval office are fine, but a rape joke 26 years ago, well that simply appalling! Give it up people, making a gross joke before the PC commissars came to power is not a big deal. You’ll hear much worse rape jokes from Sarah Silverman on HBO.
    __________________________________________________________

    1. Clinton wasn’t raping said “tubby girl” — it was consensual sex. Admittedly vulgar, but consensual. There’s a big difference between that and rape.

    2. If anybody claimed that Clinton’s sexual escapades in the Oval Office were “fine”, it was very few people. Most of us weren’t happy with his indiscretions, but we didn’t think they were worth impeaching him over.

    2. Nobody is suggesting that McCain be impeached over his rather sick sense of humor. Or even recalled.

    3. Any joke that denigrates women (or people of other races, religions, ethnicities, etc.) tells us something about the character of the person telling it. That’s the point of this thread.

Where are all of the first hand accounts by eye witnesses? tapes? videos?
    ___________________________________________________________

Give it a rest — I already answered that. If the allegation is true AND it gets widespread coverage in the MSM, witnesses will come forward. As far as taped documentation, it’s entirely possible none exists because not everything was taped in 1986 (unlike today, where every little thing anybody does winds up on YouTube).

Believe it or not, whether McCain actually told that joke or not isn’t the point of this thread. The point is the media’s reaction to the allegation. Instead of being appalled, they are patting him on the back like a good ol’ boy. This just continues the parade of evidence that the media are giving McCain a free pass.

Unlike the media reaction to the Michelle Obama alleged “whitey” remarks. Which both Barack and Michelle denounced and denied in far stronger terms than the weasel response of “I don’t recall”.

After the 10th time Johnny BomBombs had the hershey’s syrup cleaned off his crack by his cell mate, he decided to just lay back and enjoy it.

  87. Shayne says:

    Leftside Annie Says:

    Shayne: he has nuts…??

    :o/

Two sets, above and below the neck.

  88. Shayne says:

Oh and have you seen Juanita Broderick, triplebootlicker? Bill Clinton wouldn’t touch her with YOUR D*CK. See, now that’s a FUNNY joke.

  89. Shayne says:

    Where dud the dribblinghick go?

  90. dbadass says:

    Tripplekick:
Afraid or just a pussy? Come on man was McCain telling the truth in Vietnam or wasn’t he?

  91. Patty says:

Longevity is Sen. McCain’s strong suit.

Longevity does not equal excellence, wisdom, intelligence, promise or even cleverness.

He should be forced to watch tapes of himself trying to be clever, repeatedly contradicting himself, referring in present tense to countries long expired, and “oooooh — not wanting to discuss” issues like health-care as it concerns the coverage of Viagra vs. birth-control pills . . .

. . . although I’m sure he’s already shared with close associates his own snappy retort on that point.

And a note to those whose favorite line is:

    “. . . but, but, but CLINTON . . .”

    You’re right. He behaved abhorrently.

Now, can we please get back to the current presidential election?

  92. Shayne says:

    TrippleKick Says:

    Shayne,
Not that its relevant, but your hero Clinton isn’t exactly known for going with “lookers”. In fact, the quality of trim Clinton got is a far, pathetic cry from what, say, JFK got for example. Again, not really relevant but since you brought it up I figured I’d chime in.

However, Cindy McCain on the other hand is quite easy on the eyes

In what part of the south do you live tripplehick? A fifty-three year old woman who tries to look like a Barbie doll. In what part of shitkickerville is that attractive. Because in some parts of the country intelligent women who graduate from prestigious universities with law degrees and dress they’re age are considered attractive. Probably not in your trailer park though.

  93. MapleStreet says:

In the work a day world, a joke about rape would very possibly lead to sexual harassment proceedings.

But now I see that I can make these jokes and just say it was “just me being me” and I’ll be off the hook.

  94. MapleStreet says:

Re; 117 Flagged joke – While I don’t appreciate the joke, it does seem on a par with McCain’s rape joke. So will the McCain Campaign protect the flagged joke ? After all, it was just the poster being the poster.

  95. dbadass says:

    truther21:
Apparently tripplekick can’t handle my question regarding Mr McCain’s Vietnam confession, can you?

  96. Shayne says:

The ape/rape joke was given in front of a group of citizens in Arizona and was retold by many women who were there and were unahppy about it while campaigning for the senate. There are plenty of newspaper reports on it but you pathetic rethugs can just close your eyes and pretend it never happened.

  97. Shayne says:

    truther21 Says:
Flagged*Joking about a POW getting raped by a cell mate is not funny, even if you do not agree with his politics.

But joking about women getting raped or how ugly a child, Chelsea Clinton, now that’s funny.

    Flag this you dipsh*t trollscr*tum.

  98. Zooey says:

That’s funny. A troll calling Shayne “Shayme.”

How many times has that happened now? **yawn**

  99. ScaryBrownHusseinChick (ThinkOutsideTheBush) says:

I just called up the neighborhood rapist and gave him Trippleprick’s address. And I suggested he wear his McCain mask.

  100. Zooey says:

Nice one, ScaryBrownHusseinChick. Even trolls need something to look forward to.

MSM outlets usually look for first hand reports BEFORE they run with a story. They usually don’t run the story and then hope for someone to “step forward.”
    _________________________________________________________

Really? Then how do you explain the MSM treatment of Michelle Obama’s alleged “whitey” remarks?

The point here is whether the media are treating McCain and Obama equally and fairly. And they are not. McCain’s offensive sense of “humor” (the rape joke isn’t the only instance of that), his temper, his flip-flopping — all given a pass by the media. Yet every single misspeak by Obama is cause for the press to have a field day.

  102. dbadass says:

    truther21:
I sort of figured that would be your solution. Weak as it maybe it does dodge the bullet for now…

  103. Zooey says:

BTW ScaryBrownHusseinChick, since you added “Hussein” to your name, you’re even more terrifying. :-D

Here’s a link liar21 or CT to the original article from 1986 in the Tucson, AZ, newspaper. But you’re probably too lazy to read it just like you were too lazy to look it up.

What’s his address, the first trailer on the right?

  108. Hussein McCain says:

Truther21, Just to clear things up, it was a joke about McCain’s dysentery, and the fact that he was well cared for by a fellow POW who was much more of a hero than Johnny.

  109. Hussein McCain says:

I can see how you misunderstood and were offended.

  110. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    truther21 Says:
Do we have the name of just one person in that large group of listeners who admits to hearing this comment first hand? If it really happened, there must be an eye witness willing to step forward, or an audio tape or a video tape. Anything?

It was published in an Arizona newspaper. If McCain had not said the joke, he would have sued that newspaper for libel, and probably won.

I doubt that anyone wants to come forward and say they heard him say that joke. Contrary to modern myths, most people do not want their 15 minutes of fame (shame). Most would rather remain anonymous. I know if I had heard McCain say the joke, I wouldn’t admit it because I would not want all the ensuing media attention. I can see it now, a hot shot reporter sticking the mic in my face and saying “How did you feel when you heard the joke”.

  111. Hussein McCain says:

Truther21, Are you offended by any of McCain’s jokes?

  112. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

truther21 – I have a question for you. Have you heard McCain deny he told the joke? I haven’t. All he has said is “I can’t remember telling that joke”. It seems to me if he had never told that joke or one like it he would have said “That’s absurd, I never told that joke and I never would tell a joke like that, it’s sexist and hurtful to women”.

But, what we hear from the McCain crowd is that telling foul jokes like that just makes McCain a good guy.

  113. RUCerious says:

It’s all part of McIIIrd’s phony ass, ‘good old boy’ beer buddy bullshit.

Only problem is, laughing about rape jokes is Neandertal, so it fits McIIIrd to a tee.

    ___________________________________________________________

Eh, don’t waste your breath. I said pretty much the same thing to untruther21 way back at post #45, and he has yet to explain why McCain hasn’t denied the allegation. Instead, he just keeps up his incessant whining for witnesses, as if this makes some kind of point.

  115. Hussein McCain says:

The next time I crack a joke about dysentery I promise it will be tasteful.

  116. MapleStreet says:

Stupid Thought: Lets say an ethnic comic started “being themselves” and made jokes about killing whitey. Would McCain appreciate the humor ?

  117. Hussein McCain says:

Truther21, This may seem like a stretch to you, but one point I was trying to make through tasteless humor, was that a guy who has endured the loss of control and the humiliation that McCain has could’ve developed enough empathy to not enjoy telling rape jokes. Instead he seems oblivious to or likes other people’s pain.

  118. Hussein McCain says:

BTW, my first comment on TP (a few months ago) was a tasteless joke about McCain, and it was quickly moderated off the thread.

  119. Hussein McCain says:

And BTW, a POW getting raped isn’t automatically worse than a non POW getting raped.

So, did anybody come up with that first hand eye-witness account yet?

    (crickets)

    Didn’t think so.
    __________________________________________________________

OK, I’ll bite. This is your gazillionth post asking for witnesses on record. What the h*ll is your point? We respond to you (showing you amazing respect for a troll) and you continue asking. Do you think that a lack of named witnesses on record proves anything?

BTW, the reporter who wrote the 1986 article WAS contacted by Huffington Post. Here’s their results of that contact:

    *************************************************************
The Huffington Post reached out to the original reporter in that story, Norma Coile (who after talking to multiple sources months after it was told wrote about the response to the rape joke in the Tuscon Citizen) to find out if she thought it was true.

“I’m not sure exactly what the wording was of the joke, but something was said. Some joke involving a rape and ape was said. Enough women repeated it to me at the time and the McCain campaign had a non-denial denial,” said Coile, now with the Arizona Daily Star. “It came after his ‘Seizure World’ joke, in which he referred to the [retirement community] Leisure World as Seizure World… I just think it reinforced this idea that John McCain is humor-challenged. Whatever his qualities, he seems to have a tin ear for how these jokes will go over.”
    *************************************************************

Are you suggesting that just because Norma Coile didn’t name names that the joke never happened? Are you suggesting that all the women who repeated the incident to her were making it all up? Are you suggesting that Norma Coile made up the whole thing and is still sticking by her story today? Do you have any explanation for why McCain hasn’t denied it — instead weaseling out with a lame “I don’t recall”?

Or do you just think that you “win” something if you’re annoying long enough?

By the way, any further posts from you will be flagged, unless they have something more intelligent to say than “neener neener neener you don’t have any witnesses!”
