Yesterday on his radio show, right wing talker Michael Savage said that autism is “a fraud” and “a racket” and that “in 99 percent of the cases, it’s a brat who hasn’t been told to cut the act out.” Savage then asserted that all these “brat[s]” need as a father to tell them to “stop acting like a putz“:
That’s what autism is. What do you mean they scream and they’re silent? They don’t have a father around to tell them, ‘Don’t act like a moron. You’ll get nowhere in life. Stop acting like a putz. Straighten up. Act like a man. Don’t sit there crying and screaming, idiot.’” Savage concluded, “[I]f I behaved like a fool, my father called me a fool. And he said to me, ‘Don’t behave like a fool.’ The worst thing he said — ‘Don’t behave like a fool. Don’t be anybody’s dummy. Don’t sound like an idiot. Don’t act like a girl. Don’t cry.’ That’s what I was raised with. That’s what you should raise your children with. Stop with the sensitivity training. You’re turning your son into a girl, and you’re turning your nation into a nation of losers and beaten men. That’s why we have the politicians we have.”
Savage later claimed that there was “an asthma epidemic amongst minority children” because “the children got extra welfare if they were disabled.” Media Matters has the audio.

Find a local radio station in your area that airs The Savage Nation and call/email them to file a complaint about the show content. Also, use the station’s website to identify local advertisers and call/write/e-mail each of them to urge them to withdraw their advertising dollars and/or to contact the station and request that The Savage Show be removed from the air. Boycott them if they won’t. Copy/paste the stupid-Savage-comment-de-jour from ThinkProgress’ post for emphasis. Contact your friends and have them do the same. The squeaky wheel gets oiled, folks, but nothing will happen if you confine your comments solely to these pages. Get out there and make some civilized noise!

I’m sure that his broadcasting syndicate and the local stations that air his show only care about the advertising revenue he brings in. As long as he doesn’t violate any FCC rules, they will probably allow him to spew his venom freely.
The only way broadcasters will lose interest in him is if he has no audience, thus causing advertisers to go elsewhere. And as abhorrent as it is, the reality is that there are some people who listen to him.

Actually, MRI shows a lag of ~5 years in prefrontal cortex development for ADHD sufferers. It’s classified a neurological disorder.
Both autism and what’s called ADD are probably neuron receptor deficiencies. The processes involved are complex and will probably yield to further study, we haven’t been studying these disorders for long in relation to their complexities. There’s good cause to believe it’s genetic - 90% twin correlation - but no proof it’s environmental, not yet anyway. BTW, it’s “psychological” - suffix from the Greek for “reason,” logos, perhaps a foreign concept as well.
Autism shows in the first 18 months of development - no babbling by 12 months, disinterest in moving objects or ambience, etc. Ergo, it isn’t dependent on talking to a child. Savage is a moron who’s yet to stop babbling, who depends on the ignorance of his audience.

As far as overuse of ridalin instead of more conventional treatments, that is a direct result of the pharma influence in our health care. They push it and make sure the doctors make a little money if they help. Basically the pharma is influencing medical treatment here, not good medical judgment.

I have a daughter with ADD. Her old-school pediatrician made it his goal to treat her without medication, to no avail.
To this day, she has problems with focus, but not with her behavior. Like her brother and sister, she has been raised in a household with limits and discipline, and has grown up to be a stellar citizen.
Now that she’s 18, however, I think she would understand if I were to occasionally fail in my parental responsibilities. Meet us at the Greene Turtle with your theories, and I will set a very bad example for her.

Collusion between drug companies and doctors is one of Savage’s constant themes. Savage slams both drug companies and doctors over the over prescribing of meds for kids.
What I hear Savage say is that drug companies have an interest in patients having certain maladies. Sort of like a medicine looking for an illness…

I don’t think of my child as have a disablitity or something that needs a ‘cure’…he is just different from most kids, but what kids are ‘normal’ really! Apparently, parents have not been training sensitivity, because there are still people who think like this man…I’ve met them. I am blessed with a child who will always be like a box of chocolates…I never know what I am going to get!
